@slhck Watched "Loopers"?
@Boris_yo No?
Just looked what it is, probably not my kind of movie.
Bob
Bob
@slhck He did tag it "linux", and rootfs is a thing on other linux distros :\
@allquixotic what the fuck
@Bob Don't want to be splitting hairs, but the question was "Where does the root file system […] come from on Android?" – could be on topic for Unix.SE as well, like you said, of course. But it seemed more appropriate for Android for me.
If he wants he can re-ask on Unix.
Bob
Bob
ya. as I said, as it was, it was more an android.se question
but it could have been generalised
seems like he didn't bother doing so, though, so bleh
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
heh, can't escape the backslash there
Bob
Bob
10:32
you don't need to if it's code formatted?
True. It doesn't render right in the first second or so.
Boooooooring
@slhck You don't like movies that involve timelines?
@Boris_yo I generally don't like science fiction movies.
EaseUs DO - so because I chose to use your free software you subscribed me to your peddling list to bomb me with your promotional emails to buy full version?
Of course. They also spam Super User.
10:39
@slhck Show me!
Et cetera.
@slhck Second has direct URL without affiliate strings attached meaning it is company per se or reputation management agency at most. First link is anchor text and I can't check URL.
@Boris_yo The first link is http://www.easeus.com/resource/drive/usb-flash-drive.htm
Sure they're probably using some shady company to do the dirty work for them.
@slhck Yes and its based not on affiliation but on using shady company's shady services. Reputation management - digital deception of 21th century
What can I do with BitCoin? Can I pay my house rent, groceries and bills?
Better sell them before they're worth nothing again.
You'll probably not be able to pay anything of real value with it because unlike a real currency there's no trust in BTC (yet).
10:59
@slhck You can convert BTC <-> USD: coinmill.com/BTC_USD.html
@Boris_yo Of course. Those conversions are of course based on demand and supply.
With a development like this I doubt you could ever use BTC as a real currency though.
It's more of a speculative investment, really.
@slhck Demand and supply of BTC alone?
Well, yeah.
@slhck What are units of measurement on the right?
Since people figured out how to mine BTC more efficiently and it became a hype, the price increased. Up until the point where enough people who wanted BTC had bought them, so there wasn't a lot of demand anymore. And countries started to dismiss BTC as official currencies, so that's how the price fell again.
@Boris_yo Price in USD.
11:15
@slhck There's 1300. Is it USD per how many BTC?
@Boris_yo 1 BTC.
Ever since they used mBTC because it's easier to convert.

HELP! I DOWNLOADED WINDOWS XP ISO AND NOW WHEN I BURNED IT TO USB BUT I SEE A _ (UNDERSCORE) HELP
Bob
Bob
...sorry, you'll have to speak up. I can't quite hear you.
@Bob not a matter to do nonsense
Bob
Bob
You know what? I see an underscore too.
What of it?
In all seriousness, though:
1. There is no need to shout.
2. You haven't given near enough information. It's nice to know that you see an underscore, but how exactly is that a problem?
Huh, a hat for 'post or vote on 25th of december'. Gained around noon of the 24th
12:28
sigh
@Utkarsh: Haven't we ACTUALLY talked about this. SPECIFICALLY?
also, downloading ISOs from non official sources is usually a bad idea
and you can't simply walk into modor 'burn' xp into an ISO and expect it to work.

@slhck What do you think about this question :

Q: How secure is Java ?

AshOne of the most important feature of Java is Security . But then , I often come across an article like this : Java is Insecure and Awful, It’s Time to Disable It, and Here’s How & becomes skeptical about the Security feature of Java. Actually , How secure is Java ? What makes it insecure ?

@Ash Entire books could be written about this subject.
@Ash I would read Information Security instead
Ash
Ash
so it's too broad ?
22
Q: Should I be disabling Java?

Django ReinhardtFirst it was Apple, now it's the US government... U.S. urges users to disable Java; Apple disables some remotely New malware exploiting Java 7 in Windows and Unix systems How serious is this "unspecified vulnerability"? Should all users be disabling Java until we know things have been patche...

14:00
@Ash You could argue that, yeah. And not really based on an actual problem. I'd say it's better suited for Information Security like @Braiam said, but since there's a duplicate…

AshIt's 2:08 PM Tuesday, December 24, 2013 (UTC) Time in Coordinated Universal Time How come I earned Ho Ho Ho hat when it is supposed to be awarded for post or vote on December 25?

@Braiam I already posted the question
@Ash you will be likely downvoted and closed as dupe
you can't close as dupe if it was asked on a different site
doesn't mean it's right to ask the same question on every meta though

Q: I see an underscore while booting Windows XP

user284328I downloaded Windows XP ISO, and now when I burned it to a USB, I see an underscore "_". I have also made my bios to boot from usb.

mm... there's a question somewhere about "uninstalling" an OS
@Bob hehehehe
Ash
Ash
@Bob my lecturer tells it that way in classes.
Bob
Bob
@Ash Hint: secure Java is an oxymoron.
The Java sandbox for applets is utterly broken.
@Bob not sure that it still is after all the black eyes it received earlier in the year -- it might've been patched so heavily that it just manages to be secure
@Bob I pressume @Ash have read the paranoids expert answers in security.se
14:26
kinda like IE 8 or so
!!undo
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Sure. By Oracle. Who are usually at least half a dozen security patches behind.
wait, I need to look for the CVE's reports
Bob
Bob
the mere fact that those sites exist should be alarming :P
2
@allquixotic IE8 had standards-compliance issues. MS is pretty good about patching security issues.
I'm pretty sure that similar vulnerabilities can and have been found in Silverlight, Flash, and most other browser plugins, it's just that they've either been patched or not as heavily exploited because no one uses them (c.f. Silverlight)
14:29
hell, we found a SVG DoS attack in Firefox that hasn't even been reviewed by a Mozilla developer to this day
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic ya. (whatever happened to that bug report?)
I can download nightly and crash everyone's firefox in this room (or severely slow its performance) by oneboxing the image from hell
Bob
Bob
but I'd consider DoS attacks to be far less of an issue than arbitrary code execution
@Bob one guy (not a Mozilla employee) said he could reproduce it. that's it.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic link to report?
14:30
> We discovered yet another indication that new Reflection API introduced
into Java SE 7 was not a subject to a thorough security review (*if any*)
I think on Nightly it stops chewing 100% CPU after it finishes loading, but you could easily combat that "problem" by being malicious and repeatedly showing and hiding the image with javascript, for instance
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic you can DoS the browser with JS anyway, though
I could run a tight loop that freezes it
that's more due to the single-threadedness (come on Mozilla, stop executing JS on the bloody UI thread?? at least it feels like that)
wait, doesn't modern browsers have check againsts JS loops/script freeze
Bob
Bob
@Braiam they'll pop up a message asking if you want to stop it after a minute or so
@Braiam given, that was in 2012, so it's probably patched by now
then again, I'd also hold Oracle to far higher standards than Mozilla
at least as far as security reviews go
@Bob "2012"? "Date: Thu, 18 Jul 2013 06:50:30 +0200"
14:33
@Bob that doesn't work for the SVG thing though
Bob
Bob
@Braiam huh. must've misread
because it's not the javascript engine that hangs
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic yea
Bob
Bob
but I think the warning could possibly still be avoided by making massive DOM modifications followed with a slight JS delay
14:34
judging from the rate of bug squashing on moz bugzilla, the fix might make it into Firefox 197
I think DOM updates are included as part of the hang detection thing
but the SVG renderer is completely outside of that
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic really? hm.
