@Ash Ghita by Cleopatra Stratan
Cleopatra Stratan (born October 6, 2002) is Moldovan singer, the youngest person ever to score commercial success, with her 2006 album La vârsta de trei ani ("At the age of 3"). She holds the record for the highest paid young artist, the youngest artist to receive an MTV award and the youngest artist to score a No.1 hit in a country ("Ghiţă" in Romanian Singles Chart). As of late 2011, Cleopatra and her family have relocated and are living in Pipera in the capital of Romania, Bucharest. Early life Pavel Stratan, father of Cleopatra, was in a studio recording a song with three-year-old C...

QUICK! What' the minimum required partitions for a Win8 recovery on an HP laptop. The HP recovery keeps locking the Admin account out before the recovery completes.
(using the built in recovery partition)
Bob
Bob
whaaaa?
@MichaelFrank Start from the beginning?
Minimum required partitions?
Are you recovering from the firmware (BIOS) menu?
Trying to recover from the HP recovery.
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank From where? From the firmware menu or from within a booted OS? What's the problem with it?
Bob
Bob
09:32
What on earth does "locking the admin account out" mean??
???
The last few times I've used HP's recovery, I ran it from the firmware option - it has no concept of admin accounts AFAIK
I ran it from the Win8 recovery menu (Start HP Recovery). I assume it's the firmware level.
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank Try lower.
Hit esc as you first boot.
I'm still not entirely sure what admin accounts have anything to do with what is effectively disk image recovery.
I'm not sure why it's locking the admin account either.
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank "locking"?
???
WIndows Vista/7/8 come with an "Administrator" account that is disabled
you should never need to enable it
"This account has been disabled. Please see your system Administrator"
Bob
Bob
09:36
@MichaelFrank ...where are you seeing that? what are you trying to do?
you aren't supposed to be able to log into "Administrator"
at the end of the recovery, it restarts and boots into a log in screen with that message.
Bob
Bob
the built-in "Administrator" account should not be used - use a normal user in the "Administrators" group instead
I don't have that option.
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank Huh. Sounds a little like someone messed up the OOBE, but... that's really weird.
There is only one account, Adminsistrator. I have a feeling the recovery image could be corrupted.
Bob
Bob
09:38
...
hm.
how about...
ok. do you mind hackish solutions?
But what I'm trying to figure out, is if any of the partitions pictured above are NOT needed for recovery, and can I blow them away in the hopes that something is stalling the recovery.
I'm up for anything.
Bob
Bob
ok
firstly, can you access accessibility options from that login screen?
e.g. narrator, on screen keyboard, magnifier, etc.?
Bob
Bob
cool.
boot into any other OS
I'm using Ubuntu Live right now >.>
Bob
Bob
09:41
mount the Windows partition, navigate to the Windows installation directory (\Windows)
back up Narrator.exe, e.g. rename to Narrator.exe.bak
copy cmd.exe
rename that copy to Narrator.exe
reboot into Windows, open the "narrator"
there, now you have a command prompt with SYSTEM privileges - that's like root, and higher than Administrator, actually.
hmm.... might have an issue here. =/
Bob
Bob
ah.
looks like Windows went into fast boot/hibernate
basically, "shutdown" actually logs out of users and hibernates the kernel
just use restart instead
I can't boot Windows. :)
screen just flashes on and off.
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank ...I thought you could get into the accessibility options?
are you saying the recovery never actually completes?
only after the restore image
Bob
Bob
09:44
gah
there goes that idea
any chance you can get into safe mode?
recovery maybe completes, I can't tell.
I could try.
Bob
Bob
I mean, if you want to start wiping partitions you could, but make a backup first - I've never been in this situation.
do you have enough space to image the drive somewhere else?
wait...
Windows fails to boot, but leaves the partition in a hibernated state...
that's even weirder.
I believe it was part way through the Win8.1 Upgrade.
Bob
Bob
oh fuck.
I KNOW
I'm sorta just thinking about throwing a Win7 image on here and just pretending it's legit.
Bob
Bob
09:48
...that might also explain why you have five partitions
Hi! anyone here know ioncube?
Bob
Bob
my partition setup was similarly messed after that horrible attempt at an 8.1 upgrade :P
Right, but I assume the HP recovery partition wouldn't be modified by an upgrade?
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank ...hopefully
@Bob ...yea.
Bob
Bob
09:54
@MichaelFrank I wonder how feasible it would be to manually extract :\
or perform a manual installation of Win8/8.1 from ISO
you don't happen to have a backup image from before the upgrade attempt?
It's not my laptop, and my brother isn't the best at backing up.
I wouldn't mind installing from ISO
Bob
Bob
..
yea, after my horrible attempt I just restored from image :P
Yeah, I just got a text saying "FIX MY LAPTOP"
Bob
Bob
I would recommend you take an image now anyway, before further fiddling
I can tell you the partition structure of my Win8 HP laptop if you want
entire disk? I don't think I have an external with that much space...
Bob
Bob
09:57
you can try deleting things until it matches
@MichaelFrank compression :)
I can't mount any of the partitions (due to that hibernation issue).
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank you don't need to mount any drives to come in with a sledgehammer
(or a wrecking ball, I think that's the new expression)
okay. I'm not at home right now and we've overstayed out welcome... So I'll be back on in about 30 minutes or so.
so ready the sledgehammer if you want.
Bob
Bob
heh
catch you soon...ish.

Bob

I have a 400MB "recovery partition", 260MB "EFI system partition", my main partition and a 25 GB HYP recovery, which is a "primary partition".
...diskpart has a different point of view
 Partition ###  Type              Size     Offset
 -------------  ----------------  -------  -------
 Partition 4    Recovery           400 MB  1024 KB
 Partition 5    System             260 MB   401 MB
 Partition 1    Reserved           128 MB   661 MB
 Partition 2    Primary            672 GB   789 MB
 Partition 3    Primary             25 GB   673 GB
in which case it looks a lot like yours
greeeeeat
10:35
Yea, that looks similar.
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank Well, I'm stumped. Anyone else have an idea?
pirated win7 it is? :P
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank I'd recommend grabbing a win8 ISO
you can probably still extract the key
will that work with an OEM key?
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank get an OEM ISO :P
10:38
isn't the key built into the BIOS?
Bob
Bob
maybe
but it's worth at least mounting the partition in read-only and copying the registry hives
worst case you can extract the key later
in any case - while I wouldn't recommend upgrading 7 to 8, I also wouldn't recommend installing 7 fresh nowadays
7 will be going out of support at some point, much like XP is now
also, if your laptop came with 8 it might not even have complete drivers for 7
I thought they had to offer downgrade support?
Bob
Bob
eh.. had to?
Bob
Bob
Perhaps.
10:43
Anyway, I can get into CMD using the Win8 advanced recovery tools. I can launch regedit from there. So I should be able to find the key, yea?
@Bob: NIS?
Bob
Bob
!!wiki NIS Korea
@Bob No result found
Bob
Bob

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) is the chief intelligence agency of South Korea. The agency was officially established in 1961 as the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) (중앙정보부), during the rule of President Park Chung-hee's military Supreme Council for National Reconstruction, which displaced the Second Republic of South Korea. The original duties of the KCIA were to supervise and coordinate both international and domestic intelligence activities and criminal investigation by all government intelligence agencies, including that of the military. The agency's broad powers ...
@MichaelFrank ...yea
but if you can get to that point, there's a few other things you can try
e.g. list users and/or add user
or a system restore
or any number of things, really
I'm about to disappear for an hour
I'm not sure if cmd prompt will have any effect on the Windows install, or whether it's just a PE
Does anyone know if Belarc Advisor (for extracting the product key) has a portable option?
11:03
ahh
wrong country
we have the ISD
oh wow...
Now it works. o.O
The Internal Security Department (Abbreviation: ISD; ) is a domestic intelligence agency of the Ministry of Home Affairs of Singapore. It was formerly part of the Ministry of Interior and Defence until it was split on 11 August 1970. It has the utmost right to detain without trial individuals suspected to be a threat to national security. The stated mission is to confront and address security threats, including international terrorism, foreign subversion and espionage. The ISD also monitors and addresses potential threats from communism, prevention of racial tension which might affec...
it's giving me sysprep options, this seems promising.
I had a weird dream last night - I was at some kind of seminar and the host asked "What is a stack trace?". Someone replied "It's the truth." I kinda liked that answer...
Sorry - just remembered that...
bit strange
11:20
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-AAOEM - This is not a Win8 Key, is it?
I mean, obviously the Xs are placeholders. But that format seems odd.
ahh, it was showing that because it's not activated.
Finally got the key extracted! :D

Merry christmas all :)
I hate how London transport completely shuts down on Christmas day; no trains, no underground and no buses.
Ell
Ell
I can't for the life of me get my headset working through my front panel audio :/
@Fitzroy Then you would surely hate this happening from mid Friday to evening of Saturday if you lives in Israel...
@Ell Ditto
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ASIO/ASIS here
where ASIO is the internal one (like FBI) and ASIS is external (CIA). Oh, and DSD is a little more like the NSA, I guess
@Ell does it work through the rear?
or are you using USB/HDMI?
@Boris_yo ...I don't really agree with #6
if you see that B is better than A, and after going to B you see that C is better than B, it does not mean B is not better than A
just because there's always some place "better" does not mean taht there aren't places worse
also, "Better" is greatly oversimplifying
Ell
Ell
12:34
@Bob Yeah
the problem is
the right channel audio doesn't work on the headset
It might be a dodgy headset to be honest
@Bob I don't understand what it is talking about. Place of living or something?
So it is not about staying in your comfort zone and not moving with life?
Ell
Ell
also I'm getting a weird issue with my hard drive :S
a capacity mismatch for a reason I have no clue :/
Bob
Bob
@Ell looks like filesystem and partition sizes don't match
how did you creat that part?
Ell
Ell
@Bob Can't remember... I think it was gparted
Bob
Bob
what have you done to it in the past, e.g. resize operations, editing with non-Windows tools, etc.?
Ell
Ell
12:46
As far as I can remember I have only ever created it and that's all
with gparted
Bob
Bob
partition size is stored in the MBR/GPT
filesystem size is kept within each filesystem
they are supposed to match, but when one is changed and the other isn't updated... yea
Ell
Ell
Is the capacity the filesystem size or the partition size?
Bob
Bob
the one in that dialog is probably FS size
Ell
Ell
right
Any idea how I can update the filesystem size?
Bob
Bob
hm
you could try ntfsresize
and give it the size of the partition (you can probably find that with fdisk -l or something)
this is all linux by the way
make sure you have a backup
Ell
Ell
12:49
@Bob that's the issue really :/
I've been putting this off forever because I have nowhere to backup
Bob
Bob
resizing partitions and filesystems often work, but doing so without a backup is still stupid
Ell
Ell
and a christmas day drive catastrophy is something I want to avoid :p
Bob
Bob
@Ell ah.
pick up a $60 1TB HDD? :P
if you can afford that
Ell
Ell
Haha that's the issue to be honest
But I did just get £50 for christmas so I'll probably get one soonish :P
I just need a job haha
Bob
Bob
yea, that does help :P
> If both --info(-mb-only) and --size are omitted then the NTFS
filesystem will be enlarged to the underlying DEVICE size.
huh
looks like if you just run ntfsresize on the partition without specifying a size, it'll just make it fit the part
Ell
Ell
12:51
Oh that's handy
I also have just downloaded paragon partition manager free on windows
and there is a update MBR option
Hopefully it wont mess up booting because I boot from my ssd
Bob
Bob
:S
@Ell that probably won't do anything helpful
AFAIK there are no Windows tools that can resize a filesystem independently of the partition
Ell
Ell
hmm okay
Maybe I should try chkdsk
or whatever it's called
It's worth a shot I guess
hm. this is probably not good.
I have having trouble connecting to my router to mess with settings.
Ell
Ell
I'm gonna restart
talk in a while maybe guys :) thanks for the help :)
ahh fixed
Bob
Bob
@Ell that checks FS integrity
it won't resize the FS
@JourneymanGeek That's the state of society today. Adult just can't come close to child and talk to child or say what cute of child he is. PedoAlarm is so sensitive these days...
Bob

@Boris_yo Which is, frankly, ridiculous. Statistically the biggest threats are family members or friends.
time to buy swiftkey <3

@Bob I have Swype + Dragon.
Does anyone here have an HTC device ?
Do i have to switch to S-OFF to flash a new ROM ?

@allquixotic I only just realised that George Takei played the Emperor in RA3 :\
also, the 'code' that scrolls across the screen near the beginning of the second one... that's HTML
