12:17 AM
ooh just thought of a great meta question!

Kit
12:55 AM
@Vitaly Not everyone, just me. A lot. Mostly because you were helpful.
@Vitaly My God, that is a thing of beauty.

1:38 AM

Hai.

Yo.

I am using the Dictionary to find out the origin of whole/holos!
Surprisingly, they are not related.

Dictionaries are useful, I agree.

Uhuh.
Especially at the beginning of a sentence.

1:47 AM
I used all synsets from Collins Thesaurus as data for that graph (rendered with Gephi).
Basically wanted to see what it would look like.

No way, you made that yourself?

Well, I am too tired to try to make that look better or more informative. So there. I am sorry for posting something lacking in refinement that much.

It looks cute, even though I don't quite understand what it is.

The nodes are words from Collins Thesaurus; the edges between them are synonymities as listed by Collins Thesaurus (rougly 11k nodes and 130k edges). The nodes are colour-coded with a gradient that represents so-called “communities” (clusters, modularity classes). Different colours refer to different “communities.”
Then the nodes come in various sizes because nodes that (roughly speaking) have more edges and are connected to a large number of other nodes (see “betweenness centrality” on Wiki) are larger.
And the layout of the nodes is determined by a force-directed algorithm (that acts like gravity in some sense based on the edges).

I'm drunk so I only understand that approximately.
But it sounds cool and looks good! Heh.

2:46 AM
@Vitaly — actually, more than 20k nodes. :/

Hi.

Yo.

How does one use n-grams to search for word use?

@Unreason: in reply to this answer of yours: link 1, link 2, link 3

That's not exactly what I mean. Maybe I'm asking the wrong question.
I'm trying to figure out in what contexts a word is used.

2:56 AM
Ngrams isn't used for that.
Use a corpus. There are help pages that explain the query syntax.

Thanks.
Bye.

3:43 AM
Huh?
Ngrams can be used to look up in what context a word is used.
@Spare: Click the links at the bottom with the date ranges.
You will get all the instances in Google Books.
I'm off too... bai!

Why not just use Google then, if that's what you mean by “context”?
Bye Cerberus.

Q: Why "meth-", "eth-", "prop-", when there is "uni-","di-","tri-"?

Third IdiotIn chemistry, the homologous series for hydrocarbons uses the following prefixes: Meth- Eth- Prop- But- Pent- Hex- Hept- Oct- Why are these prefixes used, instead of just using "uni-", "di-", "tri-"? I looked up the prefixes, but there is no dictionary record of them. Still, I think "uni-", ...

I really wish I were a famous writer.
I'd love to be like Dickens and be able to introduce a new word. I want to get thon accepted into the dictionaries again as a gender-neutral pronoun. Kind of ironic that as feminism rose, thon actually got used less. One might have though they'd promote it more.

and I wish gender-neutral pronouns weren't such a recurring topic on EL&U :)

@RegDwight What do you think about this question? english.stackexchange.com/questions/28538/…

2:16 PM
@Alenanno I flagged that question. It's quite clear to me the way it's phrased that it's a list.
I admit it's not very welcoming to have your question closed though.
/*programmers*/ closed my first question

@Alenanno: I agree and voted to close.

Q: Ending a sentence with an abbreviation

Wesley MurchWhen a sentence ends with an abbreviation, should there be two periods or one? Welcome to ACME Inc. We are glad to have you on board. Welcome to ACME Inc.. We are glad to have you on board. I would assume that only one is appropriate because I've never seen two used (and it looks awful...

Also has to be a dupe. We've answered this about 100 times.

2:41 PM
I'm glad someone else agrees, that means it wasn't just me being too picky. Cerberus opened a meta-question for this kind of situations. I think we must choose a line and follow it, in order to avoid people saying "yes it must be closed" - "no it's a community wiki" etc

nuclear is the future
:-)
imagine the response to "won't that new desalination plant just cause more CO2 emissions", being "no. we'll just build another nuclear reactor."

@Cerberus: I think we can give up on Uranium already. Not going to win that one. Let's fight Friends instead. Cheers.

@RegDwight — Are there any free implementations of force-directed algorithms that utilise PhysX (or something similar)?

The multicollider sure knows how to pick em

Q: How can I "write out" 1.5?

user8400I would like to "write out" (1.5) in words and also (5.0). How would I do that?

9:38 PM
@Alenanno The guy just requested his account be deleted. This is a guy with 5K on SO.
@Gigili. Hi.

@AlainPannetier Eh, hi .. how polite you are.

@Gigili, Actually I was being more curious than polite.

@AlainPannetier Why please?

I remember you made a riddle out of your country of origin.

You know the answer?

9:50 PM
IIRC it was - German speaking - Ex French colony, with Oil and Desert. So I thought of Camerun.
Warm ?
Ah and with some Muslim.

It's a four season country and Muslim one
German speaking is not true

Well that could be Algeria then.

Sorry to make you disappointed but no.

No prob. ;-) How many tries have I got? Wasted 2 already!

2½ guesses left!

10:00 PM
So let me just confirm the clues.
- Muslim
- 4 seasons
- Ex French dominion
- with Oil
- with Desert
Is that right ?

Right

Tunisia ?

No!

Chad ?

No, sorry to say frankly but "Game over".

10:08 PM
Fine. No prob. Sorry for being inquisitive.

Djibouti?

@Vitaly, Hi!

Hi

@AlainPannetier Oh never.
@Vitaly No!

10:12 PM
Does “ex French dominion” mean that all of the country's territory was controlled by France, or it could be a part of the country, as (if my memory serves me well) is the case with Syria?

Well if each and every of this chat room regular users get 3 tries we might eventually get the answer of this conundrum!

@Vitaly A part of country, I'd say.

@Vitaly. I thought about Syria/Lebanon on which France once had a "Mandate" but they don't produce much oil. On the other hand 4 seasons eliminate much of sub-saharian Africa were France had the largest part of its colonies.

@AlainPannetier Haha

@AlainPannetier — Well, all of Earth has seasons… Even the Sahara has them: no precipitation at all and rare occasions of precipitation. Or something along those lines.
Maybe @Gigili does not actually mean seasons as understood by Europeans and Americans (snow, rain, drought, etc).

10:16 PM
@Vitaly Actually, all countries have reason but not four seasons.
I mean, spring - summer - autumn - winter by "season"!

@Vitaly, around the equator you have only 2 seasons: rainy season and dry season!
@Gigili, In Russia they have 5 seasons: spring - summer - autumn - winter - radioactive

Hhaa.
So, what countries have 4 seasons and large desert areas?

@Vitaly For example, my country.

Hmm… Could outsiders (for example, from Northern Europe) tell all of your 4 seasons apart?

@Vitaly Should I know? I think so.

F'x
10:29 PM
@Gigili: Turkey?

@Fx No!

F'x
frankly, if it were a former Italian dominion, it would make our job easier :)

@Fx :-D. You'd be surprised if we eventually learn the answer is Somalia.
Nice answer to the "Did English ever had a word for 'yes' for negative questions?" BTW.

F'x
@AlainPannetier well, the link was provided to me earlier today; I read it this afternoon, then this question comes :)
anyway, it's the stupid ones that are well rewarded
case in point:
29
A: How can I "write out" 1.5?

F'xYou probably don't want to do it at all. Noninteger numbers are best written in their decimal form (1.5, 5.0). If they can be expressed as simple fractions, you can do that instead: “one and a half” for 1.5. If you absolutely want to write it out, then you'll have to do it the way they are spelt...

@Gigili: earlier this year, I'd have said Syria, but I'll refrain right now :(

Yes. I've seen that one as well But NoHat's answer was outstanding as usual all the same.

10:39 PM
@Fx Lucky that you didn't say it .. you have still 2 guesses left!

@Gigili Haha. I'll call in more people if @Vitaly and @Fx fail as well. You can't hide...

@AlainPannetier I can, I can. The only thing I can do very well.

@AlainPannetier — You have my two remaining tries.

F'x
the “seasons” hint is much too hard for me
@Gigili: Alain didn't want to say it, but I'll try: Lebanon?

@Gigili before I use Vitaly's tries. I'd like to ask @Gigili. Was my supposition about sub saharian Africa not correct ?

10:47 PM
@Fx No no.

Also I saw two other clues: it's a medium sized country, and its coastline is “not really” longer than its land borders.

F'x
@Gigili then I'm desperate, and I'll go for Morocco and be done with it :)

@AlainPannetier Saying that will help you get rid of many wrong guesses , should I say? was wrong!
@Fx No (devil smiley).

@Gigili Gabon then!

F'x
@AlainPannetier not Muslim, is it?
(at read that hint as “with Muslim majority”)

10:50 PM
Right I take it back.

@AlainPannetier Oh please, you are not allowed to.

F'x
@AlainPannetier anyway, the list I had compiled only has Niger, Guinea (not much oil, but perspectives), Somalia, and Mauritania
what annoys me is that, unless I'm wrong, most of them were completely under French domination at some point, not partially (as indicated slightly earlier)
so, I probably missed something :(

@Gigili so let's go for Gabon and my last Vitaly's guess will be set on Niger.

I want a Moroccan trilobite.

@Vitaly oh you know these ? They are absolutely fantastic aren't they ?

10:55 PM
Oh, yeah.
Well, I learned about them from a BBC show First Life by Attenborough, never seen them in real.

@AlainPannetier Em, sorry but wrong.

@Gigili, I'll stay tuned for the next episodes... ;-)
@Vitaly. Did you have a chance to watch First Life by David Attenborough ?

3 mins ago, by Vitaly
Well, I learned about them from a BBC show First Life by Attenborough, never seen them in real.
Those guys are gorgeous. Would be nice to have them next to some amber-trapped insects.
Like a whole fossilized arthropod family.

I was 5 when I first came went to Morocco and have been many times since. In the phosphate mines and looking for Amethyst as well.

@Vitaly — And maybe get a large spider as a pet.

11:03 PM
@AlainPannetier About that guy who wants to be deleted... I don't think there was anything wrong with how people responded to his question but if you look at this answer which is amsuing, actually rather good and obviously some effort has gone into it, he gets unfairly sniped at in the comments. Infelicitous.

@z7sg, come on. Put yourself into his shoes. This guy isn't looking for rep. he's been there for 6 months and has contributed 6 answers or so. He receives an email and finds it funny. Granted he is not well aware of the rules. Fine. Not the first one in that case by any means.
He says "Oh I'm gonna share that on EL&U". They'll have a good laugh as well.
Instead of that he is asked nothing less than to **delete** his post.
There are more diplomatic ways of reminding the rules. Besides I don't think this is the first time this happens.

Also, I want a 4-Ga-old rock with some zircon embedded into it. Come on, it would only be only roughly 3.4 times younger than the Universe itself!
But then the very hydrogen I partially consist of would likely be as old as the Universe.

@AlainPannetier Yeah sure, I can imagine someone has come here before, thought "those guys are miserable bastards ok i'm outta here". ;o)

And the iron in my hemoglobin would come from a supernova.

@Vitaly, Iron only ?

11:15 PM
@AlainPannetier — No, but that's the first specific example I could come up with.

@Vitaly It's still just a rock. I'd take the amber.

@AlainPannetier I think a GU (geography usage) proposal would be nice.

@z7sg and with a little bit of positive attitude the post could have been a great CW repository of Britishisms. I really liked the disposition of the columns. It was like reading the minds of a foreigner and a Brit. I've had the former role more than once...

It works with your mind to make your mind work better. have to go to bed now (hint?) .. TTYL.

@Gigili. Do you mean in Area51 ? There might already be one actually. Let me try do dig it up for you.
@Gigili. I'll mull over it. For now: abysmal void in mine (mind). TTYL.

11:33 PM
@AlainPannetier Are you saying I was too harsh? It wasn't my intention as you could clearly see in my first comment... I just told him to either rephrase or delete a part of his question, but he didn't really replied friendly...
@AlainPannetier Also that "another occurrence" has a comment of mine with the same thing. But I can't understand your point... you think I did wrong?

@Alenanno. I think even compounded with a smiley, the word "delete" is too harsh indeed. The irony is that the OP came with a question underlining the fact that Brits are very cautious not to hurt feelings by [over]employing understatements.

How would you have said it?

Could you please make sure that your question comply with yadda yadda yadda. It looks to me that ....

Uhm... I can't say you're wrong
I just didn't thought of it
well
I'll make sure to rephrase my comments as well :P
but that last guy

Dovresti solo essere più attento. niente di più. Stiamo d'accordo.

11:40 PM
wasn't friendly at all

Out of 10 guys you're bound to find 10 different reactions.
The first time the OP cooperated. the second he didn't. Pure statistics.

It wasn't my intention to cause hard feelings or uneasiness, anyway
I hope you know that
I mean

Sure of course, and the guy really overreacted imo.

I don't think I gave the impression to be a rude guy during my staying here

@Alenanno You're doing great in Japanese and German anyway.

11:42 PM
Eheh are you there too?
I didn't see you yet

Non sono al tuo livello.

Oh but don't think I'm that expert really
I'm just a language lover
that's all :D
(did you want me to reply in italian?)

You probably have more time than I do. Are you still in some University ?

Yes, I am... but I'm not studying all of those languages. For example, Japanese is a passion on my own... I did German though

I studied Japanese a long time ago when I was very fond of martial arts to be ale to speak with the sensei when he flew over from Japan.

11:46 PM
You succeeded?

For the belts possibly but for the Japanese...

That's a pity, I was going to ask for some advice eheh
:D

it's all gone anyway. I just needed to make a difference between ushiro and maé

You are French, right?
Or
German?

Pure French as far as I can tell.

11:48 PM
Are you in the French SE too?
I mean, committed

Nope. Since the Japanese Beta is launched I might have reclaimed a commitment.
Wow French is at 35. I'll be retired by the time it launches for good.

Yes I'm in that one
well
I'm "following" it

But I think you must first commit before you can follow. No ?
And with only 3 commitments, you can't be much of a dilettante

Since you can have max 3 commitments
you can follow other proposals in order to avoid losing them
so when those you committed launch, you can commit the others

You're right. I just added myself to the followers.

11:55 PM
Going back to that discussion... I was thinking that questions like that, with equal answers, should be prompted to become community wiki, what do you think?

@Fx — Ain't no justice.

Wholly agree. There was some potential.
@Robusto is talking about 1.5/5.0
hahaha

@Alenanno — 僕も。

Is the OP the only one who can make his/her post a wiki, apart from the mods?

The OP can.
I think.

11:57 PM
@Alenanno — I couldn't figure out how to do it. And I tried.

Can't seem to find it anymore. May be only answers have the check box.

I think so.

@Robusto How to say "good!" ahha I was thinking of "よし!"
