There's only one Tigger on SE, and that's quite enough :P
mind, there might be more, but I don't wanna hear about it, I shiver just at the thought of it LOL
@TildalWave :-)

I'm not really a Reddit person, but apparently Scott Kelly will be doing an AMA tomorrow.

14 hours later…

Check check one two three
Anybody just hanging out?
>_>
Guess what happened once I had windows all loaded and set up
Lost control of mouse/keyboard?
It said my graphics card wasn't good enough to run the program
Oh nooooo!
That's pretty annoying.
18:31
and there was a bit of privacy involved wihigh i'm now trying to fix
But if there is such a thing it was legitimate piracy
i didn't want to use my legal copy of win 8
I don't blame you.
so i useda pirate 7
The only people who actually want to use Windows 8 probably created it... and I bet they say things like "it's not that bad"
Windows 7 is much better.
and it took me most of yesterday to realize the persistent problems with the usb and pci bus weree because of the pirate hack
You can't really trust those.
18:39
no
but they are extrenely common here
so i wiped everything and tried to install my legal win 8 this morning
Ohhh nooooo!
and it tells me the product key isn't legit
so i called microsoft, twice
That's weird.
and they say (in spanish first and then in english), sure it's legit, that key is absolutely legal
and i say, my machine is telling me it isn't
and they said "your machine is a liar!"
18:43
and of course i've typed it in like 8 times
If it was Apple, they'd probably just tell you that you were holding it wrong.
(Sorry for all of these dumb comments. I haven't been outside yet today)
so they said download a new iso
oh, the dumb comments are just what ii was hhoping for
:P
What happened with the new image?
it has been stuck at 1% for the last 15 minutes
How is it downloading?
18:46
i booted up my husband's crappy machine, which is connected by ethernet right now because his wifi stopped working 3 days ago, and it's downloading it
and i am considering the possibility his wifi stopped working because of a problem with lockout due to duplicate addresses that i had to fix on my machine at some point
known problem with windows ubuntu dual boot
of course my graphics card is a gtx 960 that cost me $300 a few months ago
Well, a wired connection will usually be faster than a wireless connection.
where did you go to download the win8 image?
it is still at 1%
windows themselves, the tech support guy gave the link
Okay.
How is the wireless connection failing?
though i am twitchy that that isn't even the problem.
Is the interface still enabled?
It may not be. Where did you get the previous win8 image?
18:51
which one
the wireless interface that is causing difficulty.
What I'm wondering is if it might be trying to make a connection and take control, and if it does that but doesn't have a good connection, your activity may stop. If it's giving you trouble and you're just using a wired connection anyway, try disabling the wireless interface.
oh, no. i got that working, though i didn't try seeing what happens if i unplug the cable from hubby's machine
Ah, okay.
It's sitting at 1%, but is it telling you how much of the file is downloaded?
he was using it fine that way last night
gotta be. says downloading file, 1% complete
but does it say, for instance, 217 MB / 942 GB complete?
18:55
no. windows gives info on a need -to-know basis
it says please wait
942 gb, hehehe, i like that
:P
Gah... Microsoft.
Where did you get the previous windows 8 image from?
The one that isn't accepting the key.
download too, direct from the microsoft store
Hm. Maybe it wasn't the correct version?
how incorrect can it be? it had that deep purple background, i think it said win 8 on the splash screen
it ain't 7, and it ain't 10.
Right, but I mean if your license is for a "home" version or something, and the image is for a "professional" version, it might not work.
19:01
not that i remember, but i am pretty sure i only downloaded it once, when i bought it
but it would be nice if the problem were that simple
Oh, so you've used that image before?
and it was a long time ago
yes, and i asked them if it was not transferrable
but they said i can use it, no problem
i asked specifically about that
It kind of seems like your computer is intentionally trying to annoy you.
doesn't it though
the download is still at 1%
Hmm... if it was me, I'd probably try to start over. Worst case, you lose 20 minutes.
19:05
ah, i'm ahead of you
i did that once already
last time it managed to get to 5%
Hm.
i could of course try again. but you can see why i'm nervous,
Yeah, if you try again you may end up only getting 0.2%
it's like the reverse of the race where each stride is half the length of the stride before
maybe i'll boot into the ubuntu live cd and try downloading it on my machine as well
That may work better.
Can't hurt to give it a shot.
19:13
the hd is blank right now, wonder if that will make a difference
As long as it has a partition where the file can be stored, that is capable of saving a file that large.
How large is the image file?
i wiped it with the pirate win 7 disk to see if the existing pirate7 files were what was making win8 install disk reject the product key. and also because the gparted utility wasn't working for that, same issue as before
shot in the dark
i think it's 3.5 gb
It'll probably be okay.
the file size is fine, as long as it's under 4gb.
hm, internet definitely slow
regardless of the partition table.
well, if you're downloading a huge file, that will have an impact.
19:21
no, i mean it has been spending 30 seconds now just trying to load the web page for the download
Are you still downloading on the other computer?
this happens to us sometimes
Ah, well that could be your problem. :P
yes, and it looks like i'm better off not giving our connection even more stuff to do
so I should wait with that 200 MB gif I wanted to post here? :))
19:23
:P
guess this is the day i do some reading
@TildalWave you can post it for duzzy and then you can describe it to me in words :P
It's like radio! Except... you look at it.
Back before TV was invented, I remember we used to sit around and stare at the radio... and back before that, we used to go to the center of the village and listen to the bards.
you remember
Of course!
and tablets were made of clay?
solid state memory LOL
19:34
The fancy ones were.
lol
reminds me of that archeology joke
dunno how it goes exactly but I can try ...
Go for it!
yes do
i shut off hubby's machine and will try again later
so archeologists were digging in England and they found a layer rich in copper ... they concluded that their ancestors must have been using coaxial data cables for broadband
archeologists in France discovered a layer rich in silica glass so they concluded their ancestors were using optical broadband networks
archeologists in Russia were digging, and digging, and they didn't discover anything, so they concluded their ancestors must have been using wireless
so what's the punchline?
19:41
lol
that's it
that's awesome.
ya, hard-time-giving aside - those archeology jokes.
what cards they are.
Archaeology seems like a lot of fun.
19:57
it does? spening hours on your hands and knees brushing away with extreme care at a tiny patch of ground under the hot sun?
It can happen in places other than the desert.
yes, you might have some cloud cover. that makes it all better. :P
I think there's more to it than just digging (although, that part seems interesting and fun). It's about understanding people from the past based on what they left behind. It's history. I think that's interesting.
that part is indeed interesting. but the time it takes to get to that part i understand involves an awful lot of the above,
Yeah, and that also sounds like fun to me. :P
20:08
well, you're one of those patient people who can actually handle a tech support job :]
tech support jobs suck. :P
yeah but you survived one without killing anybody, isn't that so?
As far as I know, everyone survived.
ah, so some of them DID kill people :D
Sometimes people would disappear, and we never found out why.
20:24
ok, now i'm trying again to download win8 using firefox through the ububntu live cd
and doing it this way, you don't get the handy 'download tool' that i'd gotten on hubby's win 7 machine
so it tells me the download progress firefox style, amount and time remaining
which says 347 kb of 4.0 gb, 3 days, 14 h remaining
and has said that same thing without progress as i typed it out
beyond whining, point being, it never asked me where to put it
hm... when i right click on computer and go to properties, it shows 8.3 gb free, 60 mb used
I wonder if it might be trying to save it on the cd. :P
You should be able to tell it where to save downloaded files in the settings.
yep, it let me tell it to put it on the external disk that's plugged in
had to restart though. now it has downloaded 64.4 kb and there is 271 days remaining 8D
Every time you start over, it's worse than what it was before.
well, i suppose it is better to leave it open on my machine this way, so it starts downloading normally whenever the connection perks up, and that way i'm not using aldo's machine.
20:40
Is it just kind of a normal accepted thing that sometimes the internet just does that?
i wonder if microsoft is being ddosed or something. it hasn't gotten even a kb more yet
it occasionally happens. the electricity occasionally goes out, sometimes the roads into town are blocked for a whole day because of a stupid and illegal protest, sometimes there is no tea in the grocery store.
Sounds like some post-apoc movie or something.
oh, did you see the documentary i linked to a while ago on my home state?
let's see, what was that called...
ah yes Cartel Land
i'd post a link but my connection is too slow :P
I didn't.
I'm on its IMDB page
A doctor vs a drug cartel?
we haven't either, actually. aldo thought it would be too emotional for him
20:49
I can understand that.
yes, small town doctor from the area. he is now in jail and his health has gone sharply downhill.
there are rumors he is being denied proper medical attention
I just watched the trailer. It looks like it would hold my attention.
21:14
sure holds our attention :D
I can imagine. It would be something to keep an eye on.
aldo has a construction company that has been increadingly successful. he keeps a careful eye on it indeed.
21:38
Is he worried about something happening to it?
22:02
he does government contracts almost exclusively. many small governments in this state are mixed up intimately with the cartels. he has had to pay protection money. he has had to compete for contracts with cartel-backed companies.
btw, now downloading quite well, 42 minutes remaining :)

1 hour later…
23:23
Finally, a Planet 9 question that's on topic here!
0
Q: Are any spacecraft heading remotely where Planet 9 is expected to be?

PearsonArtPhotoPlanet 9, the hypothetical planet predicted Batygin and Brown, is expected to have an apoasis near the galactic center. Is there a spacecraft that is heading in that direction? Specifically, they state: perihelion position is straight overhead in late May. ... aphelion (the furthest point fro...

23:39
@PearsonArtPhoto heh, though i expect the answer has to be a resounding no.
someone will have a little fun figuring out where the pioneers, voyagers, and new horizons will be over the next few decades
