I saw something on the Sun today that I had never seen before (although, I've only ever looked at it a handful of times). A prominence kind of detached itself and started to kind of... float away... from the Sun.
I just thought it was kind of cool.
checking SDO / SOHO ... stand by ... :)
ah yes nice activity on the West limb about 30° North
also some nice reconnected bursts on the East limb
It looked a bit different in the telescopes I was looking through, but they're not nearly as big as the one used to take this picture. :P
What do you mean, reconnected?
wait I'll show you
Ah, very cool.
it's basically a loop
17:31
Yeah
following the magnetic field lines
Right. That's so cool. The Sun's magnetic field is amazing.
What filter did you observe it through? Hydrogen alpha?
Yes
There were also a couple scopes using white light filters.
but I didn't see the prominence activity through those. :P
yeah those are better for sunspots
17:35
Right, and there aren't many right now.
about 4 visible, one at the edge of the limb and three on the Western hemisphere
about average for this part of the cycle I guess
Yeah, that's about what I've been seeing every time they do these.
