Q: What is Mars's "North Star", if any?

PearsonArtPhotoMars has a different axial tilt than Earth. It stands to reason that the constellations will remain identical from Mars, but their locations will be somewhat different. What is Mars's "North Star", "South Star", and if there isn't a star for either, what would the region look like over the North/...

Another day, another beautiful view of Mercury's horizon. In this scene, which was acquired looking from the shadows toward the sunlit side of the planet, a 120-km (75 mi.) impact crater stands out near the center. Emanating from this unnamed crater are striking chains of secondary craters, which gouged linear tracks radially away from the crater. While this crater is not especially fresh (its

Guess it's the navigation question that gets the pie, it's slowly making it's way upward.
@PearsonArtPhoto Your one will do a lot better with pictures, if there are any!
Yeah, I was looking for some pictures for a while. I couldn't really find any.
maybe?
Nice, where'd you nab that?
@PearsonArtPhoto eknent.com/etc/mars_np.png <-- here (but found through google images)
15:25
Hmmm... No listing of copyright...
Doesn't seem to be anywhere I can find
Yeah, well, I don't see anything wrong with using this image for now. It's probably a screenshot from some program already existing, and usually an image isn't going to be copyright from such a tool.
Thanks!
I reversed searched for it and couldn't find it anywhere else, so maybe you are right!
Hey you found one for the south pole too, awesome!
Question for whoever wants to answer: What do I need to improve? How are my contributions lacking? There has to be something to improve - be honest with me here.
(On Space.SE)
@Undo Your problem is you think that you single handedly need to be perfect ;)
15:38
@Rhys It's a goal :)
I think that somewhere you are lacking is astronomy.se ;) is that allowed as an answer?
Lol. <flags a bunch of stuff for Rhys>
@Undo well we have quite some new active members so you could give them a hand, vote up what's good and critique constructively what isn't

Pretty graph!

(Lyapunov exponents of the logistic map along with ye olde bifurcation diagram)
@Manish s/pretty/meaningless/
Did I get the syntax right?
It's very meaningful!
yep
@ManishEarth this seems familiar but I don't recognise your description
@ManishEarth If you look closely you can actually see the period 3 orbits in the graph of the lyapunov
@RhysW cheater

If you look closely you can actually see the period 3 orbits in the graph of the lyapunov ^.^
15:49
@ManishEarth :P wondered if you would notice
The logistic map is a polynomial mapping (equivalently, recurrence relation) of degree 2, often cited as an archetypal example of how complex, chaotic behaviour can arise from very simple non-linear dynamical equations. The map was popularized in a seminal 1976 paper by the biologist Robert May, in part as a discrete-time demographic model analogous to the logistic equation first created by Pierre François Verhulst. Mathematically, the logistic map is written : (1)\qquad x_{n+1} = r x_n (1-x_n) where: :x_n is a number between zero and one, and represents the ratio of existing population t...
To me it looks like the fear level I would have when falling of a mountain, with the mountain sideways above it.
@ManishEarth ah yes that's it :)
The logistic map basically is what you get from iterating $x_{n+1}=A x_n (1-x_n)$ for various values of $A$
that's what the one box says
15:50
For $A<3$, you get that it eventually reaches a single point and stays stuck there
When you guys get all 'mathy' you lose me right away
The obsolete comments are getting sparse around here. I wonder if @Manish would mind if I went over to Physics and flagged stuff like crazy?
For $3<A<3.5$ you get that it eventually reaches a period 2 orbit
And chemistry. Can't forget about chemistry.
After that, period 4
and so on, till it reahes period infinity
15:51
@Undo there's one thing about obsolete comments you didn't do yet
After period infinity you have period 3 for some reason
@Tildal What?
Flag them twice each?
The bifurcation plot shows where the orbits are as a function of $A$, and you can see them splitting
The lyapunov exponent...well, it's a measure of how chaotic the system is. Not sure how to explain. It basically is a measure of how much the system diverges on average
@Undo go ahead
trains comment flagging app on Physics
@Undo ask for clarification, expansion on answers e.t.c and then delete your comments when they become obsolete ... what I'm sayin is you have flagged many comments as obsolete (which they were) but you didn't produce many obsolete comments yourself. Comments may be obsolete now but that usually means they were needed / helpful some time earlier :P
15:53
starts with Manish's comments
1,449 comments Eeeeeeeeek!
I wonder if mods are shown their own comments that get flagged. Seems odd to pass judgement on yourself
it also makes folks return to the site when they get the notification ;)
@Rhys Want me to flag on of your things?
@Undo what language did you use?
@RhysW we are
15:54
Obj-C
Of course.
@RhysW I deleted several of my own comments flagged as obsolete yes
'This comment was rude' 'No it F*in wasn't!'
Wow, I could burn through flags sooo fast on Physics.
ah ok, none of mine are ever flagged, i am a model user
@Manish Do you prefer me to flag the post itself with a custom flag or the comments themselves?
15:56
either, though post is better for multiple comments
Got it.
@Undo ahh ok, is the code a closely guarded secret or something you dont mind sharing?
It's mostly GUI stuff - I can send you the code if you want to give me contact info :)
@Undo my username@gmail works. Not my primary, but it works
@Undo sure thing, let me just find an email address of mine i dont mind being online, i have a few
15:59
@Rhys Got it.
@RhysW a "model user" would eventually have all his comments deleted as obsolete, because respected authors he was commenting to obliged and made requested changes to their posts. :P
@TildalWave OR all the remaining ones are value adding but unable to be integrated into question or answer
Hmm... I'm not smart enough to compress a folder in Mavericks.
@RhysW Not really. If I was one of those "model users" I'd add answers to all questions I left comments at and they're still helpful. Sadly, nobody has that much time on their hands and still know much anything or care to share it.
Aha! You have to stand on your three leftmost toes to make 'Compress' show up!
16:04
@TildalWave i guess
when you start thinking about the nature of a Q&A site you soon realize that ideally there should be no comments, at least eventually ... what you should end up with is a clear question and helpful answers
preaching to the choir
it's that time of the day, it'll soon pass ;)
There, sent it to both of you. Mind you it's still... beta.
And to change sites you have to know the API key for the site you're changing to. Otherwise it crashes.
it's now a public beta :P
16:05
Lol.
I might put it on Github, actually.
@Undo sen\d it to me too!!!
@Manish I did, didn't I?
I will be converting it to C# anyways, if possibble :P
16:07
It got sent - it has a 100k file attached to it, might take a while.
94k*
not much.
gotit
oh, stupid of me
my email filter caught it
@Undo posting a follow up question to one of your astro questions!
When you send to myusername@gmail, without any punctuation, it forwards to my primary
16:10
Three comments at the bottom of this post, starting with the one three comments above the one with a score of 2, are obsolete. << Give Manish something to do :)
each flag should be in the form of a riddle
@RhysW if you ever C# it, let me know. In the meantime I'll pythonify it if I get the time
Ooh ooh, just a minute.
though remember there are 2 other mods that might see it too
Then they get mind exercise too.
16:11
@ManishEarth haha we will have one of each language eventually
@Undo or you end up with a lot of dismissed flags
^My new flagging style.
Each comment here that has a time stamp with an hour that is either divisible by five or is prime is obsolete
This is so much fun.

Q: What is radiation pressure and how does it prevent a star from forming?

RhysWThis is a follow up to: Is there a theoretical maximum size limit for a star? The answer there talks about the radiation pressure preventing a star from forming. What reaction is causing this radiation pressure and why does this potentially prevent a star from forming?

my follow up to one of your questions
@Undo every hour is divisible by 5
@Tildal you know what I mean. And space.SE is next.
well all my hours feel like 12 minutes anyway
16:23
Lol.
@TildalWave 12 is not divisible by 5
Every comment that mentions Mars and its timestamp is not integer divisible by the delta-v required to get there is obsolete
Now we just need to infect the SO flaggers with the creativity bug.
@RhysW 2.4 :P
its generally accepted that that notation means wholly divisible :P
16:26
@Undo every comment that is longer than 200 bits and does not compile in python is obsolete
Oh dear.
I'm going to get kicked out of SE for this.
@RhysW i'm not generally accepted
Every comment where a vowel falls on a character position that is divisible by a multiple of 4 to produce an answer of pi is obsolete
@TildalWave you got that right :P
@TildalWave hey, you're a secse member. "Every comment which cannot be the result of the conversion of a SHA-256 hash of python-executable code into base-ASCII"
Sounds like a CTF question to me
@RhysW that's for code review or golf
@ManishEarth For security reasons all comments are marked as obsolete by default. Thanks for your understanding!
16:29
@TildalWave I think mine results in nothing ever being deleted
@RhysW doesn't exclude other reasons tho
@RhysW Except stuff starting with a pound
3.14 * (a multiple of 4) never seems to be a whole number within the range of characters that can be in a comment
Dangit, I can't hardly understand any of the Physics.SE comments.
@Undo xD
16:30
@Undo this comment is obsolete because I don't understand it
2
@TildalWave offensive surely
this comment is offensive because it undermines my intelligence and feeling of self worth
^^ yes
Wow - I haven't had any Physics flags rejected yet. Odd.
there was once a day where i was the entire first 2 pages of 'active questions' on one site thanks to m editing a large volume of questions
that was a good day
This room needs an owner, it's still set as just me!
I'll do it! :/
Every comment which comes immediately before a comment added by a diamond moderator and the comment which immediately follows it are obsolete.
16:34
Undo! As room owner I bestow my responsibilities unto you. These responsibilities include maintenance of the feeds and managing of the pinned and starred messages!
@RhysW Wait
first let's see who gets hit by the owner roulette
Uh oh.
@ManishEarth that takes a while to kick in, im not that patient
It's going to be undo or another mod most probably. Eventually undo gets it, but let's first give the roulette a spin! :P
16:35
Sounds good to me.
@ManishEarth it will be tildal
I think it just gives it to whoever has posted the most messages.
possible\
tildal has 24% messages, followed by undo's 13, i was just speeding up the process
yeah, goes to most messages, i was just circumventing that as i know who it is :P
most recent messages
16:37
Will still be undo or a space mod :P
@Manish Really? Not total?
maybe Everyone thrown into the mix too
@RhysW I often have a nice conversation with myself here. A nice guy really, had many good chats with him.
:P
Can @ManishEarth push a magic button to make the roulette happen?
16:38
@Undo unfortunately not, scheduled job
beyond mod level abilities
maybe even beyond CM abilities
oh dunno I think it can be triggered
CMs can do anything.
Prod @JohnB im sure he will know :P
of course I know
what are we talking about
facedesk
can the 'job' that picks room owner be triggered?
16:40
oh
I don't know
we know we can pick someone manually but we want to know what user the roulette picks
you trigger it by waiting
this is fun
16:40
@TildalWave How either of us got a diamond i will never know
System: Waiting detected.
LOL
@RhysW CMs have a healthy sense of humour?
lol
@RhysW I think that your profile refresh might trigger it
@RhysW ? did we kill you?
@TildalWave We?
16:45
me and I
@TildalWave nah, guy turned up at my desk with work related issues
where's hissatron when you need him?
poke his master
I like this waiting game, should we start singing campfire songs?
I don't really know any I was always too busy burning the whole site down
I was always the one that would go look for more firewood ... this fire needs moar wood!
@TildalWave hah, i see a lot of myself in you
i was always the guy not allowed anywhere near the fire
16:51
I don't really care if it's wood, as long as it makes my fire burn hotter/brighter/bigger.
i was the guy people used to say 'remember what happened last time' to
yeah I always thought there's no point in having a campfire if it doesn't charn char the Moon a bit
charn?
i dont think that is a word
well, not in the context you are using it
as i doubt you mean the city
*char or charr
Why isn't this question on Astronomy?
16:54
that was my revenge for all those times you got me on my words!

PearsonArtPhotoMars has a different axial tilt than Earth. It stands to reason that the constellations will remain identical from Mars, but their locations will be somewhat different. What is Mars's "North Star", "South Star", and if there isn't a star for either, what would the region look like over the North/...

anything tagged 'astronomy' should totally be ours ;) all 3 questions :P
especially the one tagged telescope and astronomy :P
@RhysW there is some astronomy that's relevant to space exploration :P
flips coin heads i win tails you lose
They're stealing the bread out of our children's mouths.
16:56
Definitely, I think we should allow questions on space in general in our scope :P
I think that the consensus is that if the question is about "getting there" it's here, and if it's about "staying here" it's there
:P :P
none of the ones tagged astronomy are about getting there! you defeated yourself!
@Donald I flagged it for you: 'Astro Wanty!'
@TildalWave how can i debate with you if you give me the benefit of the doubt D: stop being friendly! ;)
@RhysW read it again
16:58
i still see nothing but agreement!
OK... I'll post it again but in a room that doesn't have anything to do with here or there
17:32
@Undo hehehe nice one
Is @PearsonArtPhoto in?
'o @Til
'o @Und
Alright. Who ran away when I came in?
morning to Oz ;)
q+:
Meant to ask him about the North Pole question, but it looks you've already thrashed him for it
Damn ... you got me with that "Who ran away when I came in?" I really thought I'm replying to @UV-D :) Morning to ... @Everyone
Oy @Eve
lol
17:39
I wonder what the incentive for colonization would be ... given that Space/Exploration is, to all practical purposes, a commons
(+: 'Morning Oye
you wanted bold and italics, no? it's *** front and back
Should make a fun question ... if I can frame it right
nonono. bold are fine, but they need not necessarily be Italians; albeit I do hear Italian women are cool I mean hot
i think
they like to think they are yes
no front/back please - TMI
'o @Rhys
yo
@Everyone everyone :P
17:49
abck
Thoughts, anyone? Too broad?
@Everyone I'm around, for ~5 minutes...
@PearsonArtPhoto Not very important (+: Had the same thought that others in here asked you about the Martian Polaris earlier
It's in the past now
I just found a SQL injection in my chemistry teacher's system.
@Undo gimme
Lol.
17:57
@Undo -ditto-
Use sqlmap to get everything
I once found a sql vuln in a major coaching institution's website. Deleted their database. Oops.
You know ... there's something comic about SQL injection occurring on a chemistry teacher's system
(They had backups)
He runs his own testing system, online, in PHP. He was foolish enough to leave the SQL code that he runs as an HTML comment in the document. According to my calculations, a simple answer of -- DROP TABLE rtfs; would cause some major havoc.
I've heard of rtfm; what is rtfs?
18:00
Or better yet: -- UPDATE TABLE students SET grade='130%' WHERE name='Undo';
@everyone He named the table that, apparently.
oh
@Undo that would be telling q+:
@Manish I think I forgot the LBT style injection - what's the syntax, again?
@Undo that does nothing
-- is a comment
Normal injection is '; DROP TABLE students;--
Ah - that's it.
End quotation, end line with semicolon, do new statement, and ignore the rest
18:03
Lol. So evil.
I'm too smart to try it, though. Might see if I can cash in on it, though.
@Undo I recall reading that, long ago, in the days of punchcards, MIT used a punchcard machine grading system. Basically, each student submits their code and it prints out if the program worked as a yes or no column in the final printout. One student got it to print "Maybe"
@Undo Decrease everyone elses' grades!
I've found 5 vulnerabilities in my institute till now. Two of them major. Reported most, though there currently isn't a good system for that.
I can just see it: 'Uh, Mr., why is my grade a -42%?'
However, one of the profs is starting a student ethical hacking team, and I'm part of it! :P
@Undo do eet
Think there's any way to get paid for finding it?
Nope
I do it for free
18:06
Hmm... Okay. I know Google pays big bucks for bugs in Chrome...
Yep
You can try, but it's the teacher's system
If it was the school system you had a chance
So I figured that a way to completely destroy his livelihood might deserve some extra credit :p
I guess I could say something like, 'Hey, there's a SQL vulnerability in your system, want to know where it is?'
You could always threaten full disclosure when you find a vuln in the system, but that's not a good idea if you're a student of the same school
I just found a lot of bugs in a program just released at work, too bad I can't get any big bucks for it;-)
2
@Manish Independent tutor, actually. Make a difference?
Yep, plain old insert into statement, single quotation marks and all. I probably better report it.
Oh wow - the comments are on every page. Eeeek.
Yep, I'm going to report it,

Welcome to Stack Exchange Podcast #53 with special guest Gabe Koscky, our new Brazilian community manager, and usual suspects Jay Hanlon, Joel Spolsky, and David Fullerton. Today’s show is brought to you by the National Security Administration!

Site Milestones: We launched Astronomy, which is not the same thing as the Space Exploration site we’d previously launched. You can ask questions about gravity (the force) on Astronomy. You cannot ask questions about Gravity (the movie). Astronomy and Physics have a lot of overlap, and that’s okay! Also, you can’t say Count Dooku in Portuguese. This is an adult-only podcast. …

Hmm
What vehicles are presently in the vicinity of Mars?
Define Vehicle.
Any artifact of terrestrial origin capable of motion either by it's own power, or celestial and capable communicating with Terra
orbiter, rover etc
(if there is an etc)
Right. I'm off to sleep on the Martian vehicles. 'nini

@TildalWave: Fixed. Ooops;-)
@PearsonArtPhoto that's OK I just wasn't sure if you're still around ;)
LOL. I wasn't, but, well... That's pretty bad, I must have clicked the wrong window to copy/paste the URL...
Have we ever sent anything to the surface polar regions of Mars?
And now I'm safely repcapped for the day;-)
Mars Polar Lander?
I mean something that worked
19:50
Phoenix was the furthest north that worked, at 68 degrees or so.
and could move around... was that one expected to move at all?
I wanna know if there's mushrooms on Mars
Yeah... I know. But God knows maybe they thought of some sort of propulsion LOL
it certainly rolled over didn't it?
keeled
joke
I worky on tagses.
The problem with rovers so far north is they can't survive the Martian winter, so...
Phoenix was buried under quite a bit of dry ice, for instance.
19:54
@PearsonArtPhoto well it doesn't have to be a rover... it could use wind to move around randomly, whatever
It's really nice being able to create tag wikis without peer review - it allows me to really make a difference there. And it's fun.
Yeah. I never did get in to tag wikis...
I'll sometimes edit the summaries, but that's about as far as I go.
we should really start making rovers more "organic" ... maybe make a giant slug :)
The excerpts, I mean.
Oh, could we synonymize [colony] and [colonization]?
Awesome, @Pearson :)
No problem.
19:58
@PearsonArtPhoto we'll add those when we'll have our blog ... it's then relatively easy to mostly just copy/paste stuff
I mean the proper tag texts not just excerpts

you first reopen it, then close with "belongs on another site" and you'll have (as a mod) option to type in the make of the site... no need to type much either, just "space" should do... alternatively, you could let me post my answer there and see if that raised your questions & answers stats LOL
(Y) sorted, that auto pings the user too right?
oops, i forgot to comment purge before sending, would you like to do the honors?
