I too wonder about that new arch. I don't really like it.
And tonight I'll finally dive into Sopwith Camel, another one of Jamie's models, or perhaps the Town Hall. Or the Hobbit gathering. Gah. Choices, choices.
I have the Sopwith Camel. I enjoyed that model.
lots of dark tan and dark green
and some huge tan plates
I know I will love it to the moon and back.
So I've been putting it off for quite some time.
I'll be interested to see if you can improve on the flight surface controls
Built that new lime Creator roboter yesterday. Now that one was, um. Hideous.
18:03
That's something I'd like to work on. The tail flaps don't center properly.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 haha. Probably not.
I have watched Jamie's 30-minute talk on the designing process, with intermediate models and all.
Sometimes I find the Creator models so ugly. It makes me wonder why they are designing them that way. Most of the time though I just despise their colour choices.
@RegDwighт gasp Envy.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 gasp Envy.
@RegDwighт oh, I only saw the short video.
@KitFox did I mention my wife is awesome? she got it for me.
Yeah, you both have awesome wives.
18:04
and to put icing on the cake, she gave them our phone number at the lego shop, so now I have some VIP points worth $5.
You could buy one of those clip thingies for that.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 the long one was some amateur guy. It had impossible sound. And abhorrent camera work, too. And the battery died halfway through. So he continued filming with an even worse one. And then the battery of that one died, too. I'm not making shit up. But I watched it start to finish.
@RegDwighт you're a glutton for punishment when it comes to lego videos.
did you finally watch that entire death star vs ssd video series?
@KitFox yeah my wife recently rummaged through the cellar looking for something and found out all the tons of LEGO sets hidden in every single corner, so now I must quickly build them all while she's in Moscow.
18:06
@KitFox will listen soon.
i have to do, like, work and stuff right now
So when she returns I can say, LEGO sets? What LEGO sets?
@RegDwighт Hahaha.
You got busted.
Big time.
You've no idea.
I was just storing the boxes in the corners down there.
@RegDwighт lol. I have only a small handful of unopened sets. I'm sure if she found them she'd be like "WTF is the point of owning an unopened set"
18:07
They seemed heavy because of the moisture.
It's a good thing you rescued them before they got damaged.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I never meant to have those sets piling up. I only buy one or two at a time, I swear. Five, tops.
Reg has a little problem.
No it's actually quite huge.
They all say that.
We only just moved and now it appears we will soon have to move again, or at least build a second house for LEGO, out of LEGO.
18:09
You moved like last year, didn't you?
Yeah. Eighteen months.
I have bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?S=4480-1 unopened. Probably should have sold it before they announced the remake.
Well. Your place is totally last year. Of course you need new digs.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I didn't even know it existed.
I thought the current one was a first.
@RegDwighт The current one is 10x better than the original.
18:10
I can see that.
the old-school alien figs were really half-assed.
Though I'm no fan of the current one, either.
and the palace itself is pretty lame.
Jabba looks pretty dumb unpainted.
Well yeah it's not much in way of a palace either.
Though again, neither is the current one if you ask me.
Twice the size, ten times the price.
I want a castle.
18:12
It's meant to represent the throne room part of the palace. that's fine. compared to other lego kits of the day, this kit had lots of playability if a little sparse for parts.
I want a whole room with a castle in it.
I should slap you.
But the new one is quite a nice structure with lots of useful parts. and I like the fact that it can be set atop the rancor pit, which is sold separately.
@KitFox why, I for one am so buying that one. I am missing like 40% of the parts.
18:13
@RegDwighт those 88 lego pieces aren't just for building, they're also pretty
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 okay now that's a problem, not an advantage. It should really be one set.
@RegDwighт it'd be too expensive.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 that's what I meant.
Whose a pretty princess? Kit's a pretty princess!
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 not if they ask half the price, no.
18:14
Cheap at half the price.
@RegDwighт ha. well, you can talk. you're in europe, where lego's prices are only slightly higher than the US. I'm in Canada. we pay among the top prices in real dollars.
Anyway. I must get building.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 just be grateful you're not in Aussieland.
Yeah, but you have universal healthcare.
@RegDwighт well, yes, some people have it worse than i.
And Tim Horton's.
18:15
Who doesn't have universal healthcare? Oh, right.
And hockey night.
And your own special kind of bacon.
@KitFox well, true. Canada is superior to the US in many ways. but our consumer goods are really expensive. and the explanation seems to be that people don't mind getting ripped off. Stupid Canadians, too polite to complain when you're getting reamed.
It's the dual sales tax.
That reminds me that I haven't dinnered yet. How can I be building in hungry condition? Inacceptable.
Which amounts to what like 33% sales tax or something?
18:16
So I'll start by logging off.
@KitFox We've harmonized the taxes in Ontario, so now there's only one, but it's equal to the sum of the two previous ones, so it's no better in most cases and in some cases worse.
Have fun building castles.
@KitFox 13%, but yeah. close enough.

Q: Where are the boundaries between Writers, ELU, and ELL?

Monica CellioWe sometimes get questions about word usage, critiques of indiividual sentences, and grammar. So do English Language & Usage and English Language Learners, and those two sites have overlap with each other too. Where should the boundaries among our sites be? What makes a question in this area o...

3
The writers mods asked me to direct EL&U's attention to this.
but my point about Europe's prices boils down to the fact that their ticket prices are AFTER tax while Canada's (and the US's) are BEFORE tax.
18:18
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Isn't that silly?
@KitFox I'd answer the question except I don't know the answer.
It's for discussion purposes.
@KitFox I prefer the European way.
Yes, that's what I was saying. It's silly to say "this costs x" and then say "oh, well, you have to pay more than I said it cost."
@KitFox yeah when I realized that european prices include VAT, usually, then I re-evaluated the price gap between canada and Austria (I was on vacation) and I realized that many sets were cheaper than in Canada. There were some that were more expensive.
but you live in the US, land of cheap, cheap toys.
18:23
Yes, that's true.
If shipping were cheap, we could make some sort of arrangement.
@KitFox yeah. sadly, all the savings are lost if we first ship to an intermediate location.
I suppose we could meet up in...Sherbrooke, but then the gas expense and such. Too bad for sane economics.
it'd be cheaper for me to just drive to niagara falls or buffalo and shop there.
Hmm. Sure. Be practical.
I'll have you know that we have lots of Canadians shop in our town!
oh, I don't doubt it.
18:37
We swear at them all the time.
but honestly, driving across the border... well, flying too... what a hassle. us border agents are so touchy.
"Turn right! Turn right! Damn canucks!"
HONK, HONK
last time I crossed the border at the thousand islands bridge near Watertown the border agent was like "why are you coming?" "to go shopping" "Where?" "(thinks) Salmon run mall". "You expect me to believe you drove all the way from Toronto to go to the Salmon Run Mall?" "uh, yeah."
It's so common here, I can't believe border patrol wouldn't believe you.
well, it IS like 3 hours from Toronto. But hello! Toronto is on the north shore of a small body of water called LAKE ONTARIO. if I want to get to the other side, I kinda have to drive 3 hours either way.
I mean it's a border crossing. by definition people are going to cross the border there. I'm just glad I knew the name of the place I was going. When I go shopping in Niagara Falls or Buffalo I have no idea where I'm going, I just roam around.
I can't imagine how incensed she would have been if I didn't know where I was going to go. imagine! just driving around and shopping!
anyway it's like that EVERY TIME I enter the country.
contrast with the situation in Austria, where they asked me "where are you from?" and I said "Canada" and they stamped my passport and that was IT.

I am white.
Oh.
it's from Ghostbusters
the token black guy says it.
18:55
Yeah.
Oh.
snowball artists?
I remember it as bullshit artists.
19:28
jittery
The landscaper called to tell me they're going to be late, but now I don't know how late, so I don't know what I should work on that I can drop at any moment.
Blargh.
Take some deep breaths.
We did some writing exercises in chat if you want to read them.
The deep breaths are helping.

hi
20:53
@ali Hi.
Hi!
@MετάEd have you never heard that Jane Austin was a feminist?
21:11
@Carlo_R. Jane G. Austin the transcendentalist?
How did this topic come up?
Ah, I see I have a new fan: someone has just downvoted two of my old questions.
Hello!
@tchrist You don't need a trema on two vowels that are normally already two syllables. That's why it looks weird. And a trema on the first vowel is never done!
@JSBձոգչ Correct!
Although it makes me sad to see the queen go, the ceremony was great.
And I did flee to the country, as @MattЭллен said. Now I'm back.
@WendiKidd I have never seen a jelly bean in my life!
Except perhaps not knowing what I was looking at.
They aren't eaten here.
what do you do with them?
@MattЭллен Hi!
21:23
Hi!
They are thrown at people.
ah. maybe we've been getting it wrong all these years
Charles and Camilla were there btw.
:O
did they do anything exciting?
Well, they sat.
Is that exciting for them?
21:25
probably for them
Not that they're boring or anything.
They sat well.
They looked great.
We liked her hat and dress.
I'm sure. not wrinkly at all
Her hat?
It was all feathers, so, not, it wasn't wrinkly.
21:26
@Cerberus That's so sad because jelly beans are delicious. You must try them at least once!
I will!
Cats ...
what now?
They got into a metal shortbread-biscuit tin by knocking it off a counter and onto the floor.
The lid was on very tight, too.
It used to be full of dry cat food.
21:29
Ahh well smart cats, then, to have remembered!
Sorry about the cookies though.
@Cerberus I was thinking of their faces :D
@MattЭллен Haha, aww.
@Robusto What you do is put it in a cupboard with a rubber band around the door knobs/handles.
Our princesses may not be the prettiest, but they are extremely cute.
Apr 26 at 19:17, by Robusto
<= is totally getting a new kitchen
Not until then.
I see.
@WendiKidd Cookies were long gone. It was full of cat food.
21:33
@Cerberus very sweet (like jelly beans)
@Cerberus So adorable!!!!!
I know!
They had to smile and wave at people all day long, from 10 am till 9 pm or so.
They probably had a break of a couple of hours, though. But still.
Is that why the princess has an extra left arm?
Haha.
Wow. Most children would not be able to withstand that.
21:36
Sewing extra arms onto one's dress is probably high fashion.
What's the occasion for the smiling and waving?
We have a King!
Oh! Brilliant :)
Oh they're so adorable
21:37
@Cerberus 404? something like that
I think the link died when you edited it. It worked when I first clicked it but now it says image not found
I saw the pretty blue dresses but now it's gone
Aha! Back :)
Deze pagina is niet beschikbaar
I want their shoes
this page is not be sick in a bar?
@MattЭллен its fixed now
And lol I can even figure that one. Page not found!
;)
21:39
cute!
I know right? :)
welp. time for me to try to sleep. toodles!
night!
Arg, it isn't working!
@MattЭллен Night!
Eh, the link works if you click it :)
21:39
@WendiKidd Well done!
@Cerberus haha
Yeah the link works.
But I can't get the picture itself.
Oh, well.
What is it called when a new is hailed but without a coronation?
Sometimes I wish we had royalty. You know, like "all little girls dream of being princesses" but...we don't actually have any, so that's pretty unlikely. haha
The Dutch King never wears his crown.
@Cerberus hm?
Why not? Not allowed to or just doesn't wear it?
21:42
@WendiKidd Heh, well, perhaps you could kindly ask Lizzy to accept her old colonies back...
@Cerberus Haha. Doubtful! ;)
I dunno that she'd take us either ;)
@WendiKidd Well, we were a republic for a long time, longer than you guys, so we never really got used to the monarchy. A crown would be pushing it.
Ahh I see.
So it's there, sitting on a cushion, but it isn't worn.
The only royal thing he wears is the mantle.
See you'd think that would be the fun part of being king. (Or maybe queen, since this is perhaps a bit of a female response). "Ooh pretty crown! Yay. ...now I have a whole country to watch over, which is a lot of work." ;)
But no, that's cool
I can't imagine the pressures of actually being royalty though
21:45
Suppose you're prepared for it all your life.
@Cerberus OH! Okay that is very very royalty-looking. As good as a crown, I suppose :)
And her dress is gorgeous
@WendiKidd Haha, so one would think. We had three queens in a row before the new king, and they weren't allowed to wear the crown either!
@WendiKidd Absolutely! That's why the princesses behave. I wouldn't have.
@Cerberus I wonder if they snuck in at night and tried it on just once. I think I wouldn't have been able to control that impulse. Though as with the princesses, if you're told what's expected from birth maybe it's different.
@WendiKidd Yup! She used to be an Argentine public persecutor, so you may still have a chance!
@WendiKidd Never feel sorry for [someone] who owns a plane.
21:47
@Cerberus Haha.
Just need to find a list of eligible princes worldwide, huh?
;)
Life is hard.
She has a tiara on in the picture too though. That's close enough to a crown I think :)
I'd be content with that lol
@WendiKidd Haha, that is very well possible. When my father (he's a major in a certain cavalry regiment) met the would-be-king and queen, the former lifted up part of the latter's dress as a joke. In private, anything can happen! (No, I'm not no underwear was visible.)
Life of the party.
@WendiKidd So you'll settle for anything with lots of diamonds? How noble of you.
21:49
@Cerberus haha that's brilliant
@Robusto Yeah, well, the job itself is rather boring half the time.
Bad cats are trying to worm their way back into my good graces. They will fail.
2
Hehe.
@Cerberus No! Just a crown and a tirara are kind of the same thing. They're pretty much exclusively associated with princesses. The fun part is the tiara; it's the reward for all the hard work right? :)
@Robusto They will succeed and you know it.
21:50
mumbles curses
SDF89
@WendiKidd True, true. But I think any noblewoman can wear a tiara...so you're already lowering your standards...
@Robusto Is this kitty talking?
Ahh, hell, now the strategy is to jump on my keyboard. That is destined to fail too.
I knew it!
@Cerberus Of course.
Nice caps lock, kitty.
21:51
Seriously.
I was thinking, is this some obscure film reference I'm supposed to Google?
One never knows with you.
BRB
@Cerberus haha. anything with a tiara is a good thing. but there must also be jelly beans! ;)
My Cat from Hell is a reality television program produced by 3 Ball Productions for Animal Planet that premiered in May 2011 and is currently running. It stars Jackson Galaxy, a cat behaviorist who visits the homes of cat owners—usually couples—in order to resolve conflicts between either the human owners and their cats or between multiple animals. Philosophy Jackson Galaxy believes that he can help any problem cat—provided that its human guardians follow the advice he provides—and that most behavioral problems result either from triggers in the cat's environment or from mishandling of...
It's an actual TV show.
@WendiKidd is too wrapped up in her royal dreams to take notice of my cat problems. A princess doesn't have cat problems, I suppose.
2
Well, that's it for me for now. Laters.
@Robusto Sorry. Having never had a cat I suppose I'm not qualified to determine what a cat problem is. The internet seems to tell me that cats stepping on keyboards is actually an everyday occurrence ;)
22:09
@WendiKidd Everyone should have a cat because it feels so good, later, when you don't anymore.
@MετάEd Oh that's so sad!
@Robusto This sounds like fun.
@MετάEd Hey!
That's mean.
Cats are the best!
I think kittens are adorable but I don't know how I'd feel about having a cat. The internet makes them appear a scary creature.
Naaaah!
They're not scary at all.
22:38
@Cerberus As a dog, you like to eat them, I suppose.
@WendiKidd They're not scary. They pee, poop, shed, and throw up in your house (and not where you'd like them to), they jump up on your countertops, they caterwaul at night, they scratch people and ruin floors and furniture, and require expensive food and trips to the doctor. Many cats are also very affectionate and soft and do hilarious things (because they have very simple minds). That all makes it more likely that you will put up with the other stuff. tl;dr: Cats are great.
@KitFox Okay, I took a shot at it.
@MετάEd @WendiKidd I urge you, this post is just too long; you should really only read the tl/dr part at the end. Trust me, it would be a waste of time.

Nortonn question.
@simchona
23:15
Umm hello?
Those death rays look impressive.
(One of my current obsessions is Girl Genius.)
Does it work like the fembots in Austin Powers?
@Cerberus I must confess my unfamiliarity with Austin Powers.
Hmm never mind, then. It's not particularly good.
A British comical film.
23:19
@Cerberus A spoof of James Bond, is it? Or am I thinking of something else?
Yes.
They have robots that look like attractive girls, which have guns for breasts (they still look like breasts, except when the barrels stick out).
@Cerberus I have seen the second Johnny English film, which is also a James Bond spoof.
@Cerberus Now that is reminding me of a Lady Gaga video.
A weird Lady Gaga video. But such is, in any case, a tautology.
@TRiG Never heard of it!
Nor do I know any videos by/about Lady Gaga!
I know she is a singer.
@Cerberus Oh, but lots of her videos have hot guys in them, which is as good a reason as any for watching them. ;)
23:34
(This one has weird militaristic fetishes, and tributes to a Madonna video, with significant feminist changes: Madonna, in her video, is an object, while Gaga is an agent. Madonna is the wife of the factory foreman; Gaga is the overseer (of a factory which turns out young military men, apparently). Madonna is desired; Gaga desires (also she tops a guy).)
@TRiG Umm ahah!
@JohanLarsson Do those videos make sense without audio? The speakers on this computer don't work.
@TRiG You know there are other places where you can get what you want, hmm?
@Cerberus Yeah. I read feminist blogs which do critical sociological analysis of pop music videos. Is this a problem?
(I can't remember where I read this stuff. But it's true, anyway.)
@TRiG hes is pretty sick on stage but I think you want the full package, think I have watched them 1000+ times, illest live ever imo
23:37
@TRiG No, no, not at all!
coughs
@JohanLarsson Oh, that's Bieber, is it? I just looked at the URLs.
lolno James Brown in his prime, the turning point of evolution, as good as things ever got on this planet
@Cerberus Generally, I prefer written porn.
@JohanLarsson Music, anyway. So there's no point me opening them on this computer.
oh I misread James Bond as James Brown :D
a lil drunk here
@JohanLarsson Happens to the best of us.
23:40
me < the rest of you :D
@JohanLarsson Drunk posting is something I've never actually done.
@TRiG That's...efficient, data-wise.
It's funny, but...
Does the author misuse gratuitous here?
Oh, wait, it was on purpose, haha.
learned a new word
@Cerberus where have you dogs been all week?
@Cerberus Almost certainly intentional. Note that the "Revenge of the weasel queen" bits, like the "Fairy tale break: Cindarella" bit, are little asides, and not actually part of the plot.
@JohanLarsson The city was a nightmare of peasants yesterday, so we fled to the country for a long weekend.
23:45
@Cerberus Seas of orange.
@TRiG "The" plot?
@Cerberus ok nice, meanwhile I have felt incomplete :D
Yeah.
@Cerberus Oh yes. It's a long-running tightly plotted comic, with character growth and everything.
@JohanLarsson Haha thanks! I felt incomplete too, mainly because you weren't there, of course, and possibly also because there is no shower there.
@TRiG Noted.
23:46
How does it feel having a king now?
(I watched some of the coverage on Al Jazeerah, while waiting for the Indian restaurant to finish preparing my take-away.)
Also, question: Why is there no orange on the Dutch flag, when it is clearly the national colour?
And what can we do to get the Orangemen out of Northern Ireland?
;)
@TRiG Really weird!
@Cerberus Yeah?
@TRiG Well, the flag is older than the monarchy. It was a national flag when we were still a republic. An orange pennant is hung next to the flag on events that concern the House of Orange.
@TRiG Yuck, we don't want them!
@TRiG Everything is about queens.
Like the song "Oranje boven" ("Orange up"), which doesn't rhyme if you have a King.
Or at least the meter is wrong.
