> gen. plur. murum, Arn. 3, 3; "usually murium", Cic. N. D. 2, 63, 157; Plin. 8, 27, 41, 98

"Usually". hm.
Spanish used to use sg mur pl mures (no cases), but now uses ratón. Which is a weird word, because you would think it would be a great big rata, not the wee little ratoncito that it is.

@tchrist If you forced me to go hunting for a grizzly bear my weapon of choice would be a cruise missile.

Mine are American bears, not Horrible ones.
I’m sure a drone strike would suffice. Not much rug potential in that, though.

I saw one up close in the wild once, maybe 20 or 30 yards away. It was kind of an awe-inspiring epiphany to realize that if that creature had decided to turn my way and investigate, there was nothing I could do to protect myself. Nada.

I had that with a great big bull moose some 10 yards away, and with a mountain lion a scant 3 yards away. The former didn’t scare me as much as perhaps it should have, while the latter instantly shot me full of these incredible built-in drugs that you never get from a dealer.
When you realize you could be dead in under a second and there is nothing you can do about it, there are actual chemical changes in your body and brain.

7:10 PM
@tchrist Yeah, it's amazing how much adrenaline your body has lying around for just such an emergency situation.

I’ve never come upon a grizzly, but do not usually wander about in their domain.
I’ve been to Alaska a couple of times, but no change encounters of the ursine kind.
But this one that’s hanging out at my house has got me too nervous to go out much at night, lest it be lurking nearby.
Never surprise a bear.

I was hitch-hiking through Canada in my early twenties. It was on a gravel road in Glacier National Park in B.C., up near Revelstoke.

Did you hear? Obama has just won Florida.
Dumbasses.

@tchrist They say that if you see a grizzly, it's by accident; if you see a black bear, he's hunting you.
@tchrist Oooh, now we can celebrate?

No, that is not true re bears. I’ve come across black bears more than once in the forest who were surprised to see me.

7:14 PM
AFK for trash run. That's how I celebrate.

But lions, yes, I’ve heard that.
If you see them and they meet your eyes, you’ve surprised them.
If they seem not to notice you, then they are hunting you.
But I don’t know how the hell one surprises a cat.

Quietly.

> The United States Postal Service acknowledged on Friday that one of its mail carriers did not report a corpse at a Denver home because he mistook the body for a Halloween display. "We do know the carrier delivered mail to the house that day, and he remembered seeing something he thought was related to Halloween," the postal service said in a statement. "When the carrier learned that was not the case, he was shocked and extremely upset."
Macabre.
My cousin suggested that I wear a bear bell to go outside at night.
In the most advanced testing, bear biologist Tom Smith jingled bear bells in varying volumes in front of brown bears in Katmai National Park. Regardless of how vigorously he shook, 15 different sets of bruins ignored the bells. And yet they snapped at attention the second he broke a pencil in half.
This isn't 100-percent proof that bears don't respond to bear bells; Katmai bears are known for being relatively non-aggressive. But it means that in this specific case, the bells failed to warn and change behavior as intended.
It isn’t clear that bear bells work.

get an air horn
that'll get the bear's attention

Or punch it in the nose.

7:24 PM
Sunday seems to have come early this week.
Bears are not sharks.

Sunday is bear-punching day?

Sunday is Crapday on ELU.

Lies.
If it swims like a shark, has fins like a shark...

Tiger shark. Bull Shark. Goblin Shark. Leopard Shark. Nurse Shark. Porbeagle Shark. Zebra Shark, too. But no Bear Shark.
Land Shark.
Pool Shark.
I am annoyed I cannot put out birdfeeders with the storm and all.

@tchrist vim or emacs?

I am running a program that spits out Roman dates, or purports to.
See JC ass. supra.

@tchrist How does it do with figs?

i don't care for roman dates. i had much hotter dates in romania.

I also think they are playing loose and fast with the Julian/Gregorian thing, let along the pre-Julian one.
Czechia is better.

@JSB how are the date different in Romania?

Cheaper.

With this new blizzard, I may even have to don pants. Life is ridiculous.

pants! will the indignities never end

If God had meant Man to wear Pants, He should have made us born with them.
@Cerberus First of all, arse technica always makes me nervous. But most of all, to what end?

Nervous in what way?
They're not always very smart or balanced.

7:54 PM
Arse is arse, be it technical or baby-smooth.

Symbola is a really pretty font.

@Cerberus I always wonder why people think I ‘should’ spend money.
@Mahnax What part of it are you enjoying?

Of course you shouldn't.
But you might be tempted to.

@tchrist It seems dignified, and is ever so easy to read.
But I have a few issues with spacing between certain letters.

I used Alfios when I redid the sign sinister for our banner poster.

7:57 PM
I used Alfios for my chat extension until about four minutes ago.

BTW, you can find ligatures like the one I just used by typing: $ uninames lat lig
Bastards.
@Mahnax And what are you using now?

@tchrist Symbola.
Just a test run.

I have aliased "uninames" to just plain "ug" in my shell. Faster to type.
I think the Mac should fall back to Symbola as needed.
$ uninames LATIN LIGAT
Which is not quite like a papal legate.
$ uninames Romanian
$ uninames Old English
$ uninames French
$ uninames Iceland
Note that an all-uppercase arg matches only uppercase, but a mixed-case or lowercase one matches all cases.
$ uninames RUNIC
$ uninames runic
You can specify that something not match by preceding it with a minus: $ uninames ALPHA LETTER -GREEK
God, it is hard not to put periods at the ends of sentences.
@Mahnax Isn’t that a lot easier than knowing how to use regular expressions?

@tchrist Yes.
This is lovely and simple.

Just having "intelligent case" matches and subtraction really helps do most of the work.
If you give more than one arg, all must match. It’s an "and" not an "or".

8:07 PM
Right.

To get an "or", you have to use a pipe and quote or escape it.

\|?

$ uninames BRACKET "LEFT|RIGHT"
Right.

OK.

$ uninames BRACKET LEFT\|RIGHT
Either escaping or quoting works. Otherwise the shell thinks you are trying to pipe into a command named "RIGHT". Right? :)

8:09 PM
I'm not sure, I'd have to ask it.
$ say Right!
The shell agrees.

@tchrist are you using two monitor?

@Carlo_R. two monitors? like one and two? why?

Yes, you are so fast in posting your lines!

Mere murine snarf-n-barf.
I am perfectly comfortable having more than one process running at the same time.
Since this dumb thing won’t let me shell out.

8:22 PM
It seems like you have a monitor for the chat and another forunning r you software.

Why would I need a separate piece of hardware for that?

Maybe you have two separate windows contestually opened on one monitor.
Sorry, if I seem funny!
But I'm under the impression you are a super human being.

You are able to think and to work contestually on more matter.

"contestually" is not a word.
And I have no idea what you mean by it.

8:26 PM
I mean "in the same time".
What is the word that fit this meaning "in the same time". We have two "contestualmente" and "contemporaneamente".
Your screen is wonderful, really.
I use a screen of these approximated dimension: 3cmx4cm.
Where cm is for centimeter.
However there is something of fascinating in saying directly my avatar in your screen.
Sorry "seeing" not "saying".
@tchrist I found this word "CONTEMPORANEOUSLY" for "contemporaneamente".

@Carlo_R. Just say: at the same time.

@tchrist thank you.

8:55 PM
@tchrist I would never be able to work like that.

@Mahnax Heh. I don’t. I just made a messy desktop for Carlo.

@tchrist That's what I was hoping—you don't seem the sort to keep things on top of each other like that. Do you use Spaces?
And you used Grab?!

@Mahnax I have. I find that virtual desktops aren’t as great as they’re cracked up to be.
@Mahnax You have another idea?

@tchrist ⌘+shift+3/4

I only use multiple primary screens when programming, because you need more than one window on the screen at once.
@Mahnax Does nothing for me.
Well, that I can tell.
3/4?
What does that mean?

8:58 PM
@tchrist 3 or 4, depending on what you want to do.
3 will take a screenshot of the whole screen.
4 allows you to select an area.

Yes, ok. Something else had focus and didn't let me do it. Weird.

The screenshots automatically save to the desktop.

What does it name the files?
I don't really have a desktop I pay attention to.

Something like Screen Shot 2012-11-10 at 1.59.45 PM.png

In that I usually keep the full screen full.
I forget how to do a mass-iconify to show the "desktop".
All I know is the iconify-everything-else, then iconify-this.

9:00 PM
cd desktop
ls

Yes, well.
That is normally how I cope, yes.
Trying to negotiate all the ⌘H thingies is a good reason to use Spaces, I suppose.

I have Safari, Mail, and iTunes open in full screen constantly.

Right.

To the left of those are four spaces, where I work on things like MS Word documents and Terminal.

You can do that in the same screen, but you have to ⌘-Tab between them.

9:02 PM
I know.

I don’t like that I don’t have "xterm rings".

They don't take up the full screen that way though.

You kinda do.

xterm rings?

@Mahnax They can do so, if you want.
A version of ⌘-Tab that only cycles through the Terminal windows.
I also forget what that is called. There is a way to do it, though.

9:03 PM
Hmm.

I usually use iTerm because its mouse works better.
Well, iTerm2.

Yeah, I've heard good things.
I like Terminal for some reason though.
shrugs

One of the things I most detest about these consumer GUIs is that they do not allow the focus for something that is not "on top".
Which is stupid. And a pain.
Sometimes I want my typing to go to a window that is not fully exposed.
This is the normal way on Unix.
You also never have to click to type on Unix. Rather, focus follows mouse.
You can do that with iTerm.

That's neat.

That’s part of what I mean by "the mouse works better".

9:06 PM
Right.

Also, Terminal has weird cut/paste behaviour sometimes. I can’t pin down right now just what, but it can be annoying at times.

I've never experienced such a thing, but I don't use it that much.

> So the future of marijuana tourism in Colorado and Washington is hazy.
Heh.

Haha.

> Any plans for an adults-only après lounge where skiers could get more than an Irish coffee to numb their aches? "There's a lot that remains to be seen," Rudolph said with a chuckle. "I guess you could say we're waiting for the smoke to clear."
They’re really milking this one.
That’s from today’s paper.
> The home county of Aspen approved the marijuana measure more than 3-to-1. More than two-thirds approved marijuana in the home county of Colorado's largest ski resort, Vail. The home county of Telluride ski resort gave marijuana legalization its most lopsided victory, nearly 8 in 10 favoring the measure.
Those are crazy margins.

9:10 PM
Those puns remind me of C-3P0.

Boulder County had 93% voter turnout, not for that measure, but overall. This is deliriously high compared to most places in the country.

93?!
That's impressive. I think the last federal election here barely got 50% voter turnout across the country.

Minnesota was #1 at 75% this time, with Wisconsin not that far behind.
WI and MN tend to be civic-minded.
Moreso than much of the country.
But 93% is nutty. Get this, Mesa County, over on the Western Slope, with Grand Junction, got 96%. I just do not understand. It is remarkable.

That's almost as high as my mark in Maths!

They have a higher Hispanic percentage, but still.

9:13 PM
Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
I got my report card yesterday.

With voter turnout in the 90s, you don’t even need to consider obligatory voting.
Strange time for a report card.
Quarterly?

I think it would be called quarterly, yes.
We get four in a year.
So I suppose that means that the semester is half over already.
It went quickly, that's for sure.

Probably more quickly for you than for those in the lower quartile.
> Every summer on the shores of the Puget Sound, Seattle is host to "Hempfest," which according to organizers attracted around 250,000 people over three days this year. For those three days, people are largely left alone to smoke publically at a local park, even as police stand by.
Well, what else are they going to do? Arrest 250,000 people? Silly.
> The incoming Dutch government suggested a national "weed pass" that would have been available only to residents and that would have effectively banned tourists from Amsterdam's marijuana cafes. The "weed pass" idea was scrapped, but under a provisional governing pact unveiled last week, Dutch cities can bar foreigners from weed shops if they choose.
> In Denver, some feared that the Colorado marijuana vote could deter tourists, not to mention business visitors. "Colorado's brand will be damaged, and we may attract fewer conventions and see a decline in leisure travel," Visit Denver CEO Richard Scharf said in a statement before the vote.
Now you know that is not going to happen.
Scare-mongering.
> Marijuana backers downplayed the impact on tourism. Aldworth pointed out that pot-smoking tourists wouldn't exactly be new. Colorado ski slopes already are dotted with "smoke shacks," old mining cabins that have been illicitly repurposed as places to smoke pot out of the cold. And the ski resort town of Breckenridge dropped criminal penalties for marijuana use two years ago.
Yes, people in the little mountain ski towns often smoke pot openly. Not so much in touristy Vail.
> Colorado's measure specifically bans public use of the drug. But guidelines for commercial sales are still to be worked out. The state's 536 medical marijuana dispensaries are banned from allowing on-site consumption, but lawmakers could set different rules for recreational marijuana shops.
536. Gosh!
> Meanwhile, prosecutors in Washington's largest counties dropped all pending misdemeanor cases of marijuana possession Friday in response to that state's vote to legalize the drug.

We do get a lot of unwanted tourists.

Now, that is a good thing.
@Cerberus How can you tell wanted from unwanted?

9:23 PM
Believe me, it's easy.

Hooliganism?

Do people get high in Dutch coffee shops, or is it strictly take-out business? I should know for how often I used to go to Holland, but I never bothered with such things.

Of course they get high in coffee shops.

What the hell is that picture of? A riot? A Captain America movie?

9:26 PM
It is what I get when I Google "Britse toeristen".

Where Britse is what?

Bad?

But actually, those look more like hooligans, who are probably not attracted by weed that much,
Belgium.

British?
Oh. Hmm.

British tourists are usually loud, badly mannered, drunk, and leave lots of rubbish around.

9:27 PM
Where hooligan presumably means some soccer-related thing to you, I suppose, rather than a juvenile delinquent.

No doubt they get into fights too.

@Cerberus You have an extra word in that sentence: the first one.

Yes, a hooligan is like a rioter, but normally related to football.
@tchrist Nah that's not true.

This is a completely foreign, and completely fucked up, notion.

Asian and American tourists are much better in that regard.
(The complete phrase is "football hooligan", I would say.)

9:29 PM
Roving packs of foreign rioters related to any sport would cause the sport to dissolve.
No one should have to put up with such fuckheaded criminals.
Where “foreign” means nothing more than “visiting”, and is probably a superfluous word.

I know, but...what can we do?

Dissolve the stupid circuses, of course.

How?

But anyway, football hooligans are not specifically related to pot.
But groups of young men from all over Europe, notably England, are.

Make it illegal.
Disband the leagues.

9:31 PM
Make football illegal?

Forbid it.
That would stop it.
Promise.

There are women too

That's a bit drastic. You know that the very large majority of the population enjoys watching these matches.

That shit simply Does Not Happen in North America.

Really?

9:32 PM
Ask M..ax.

No riots and vandalism related to sports?

Oh, Vancouver! You're looking lovely last year, 'round June.

But, you know, those hooligans will often fight and vandalise outside football contexts too.

@Cerberus No.

The 2011 Vancouver Stanley Cup riot was a public disturbance that broke out in the downtown core of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on Wednesday, June 15, 2011. The riots happened immediately after the conclusion of the Boston Bruins' win over the Vancouver Canucks in game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals, which won the Stanley Cup for Boston. At least 140 people were reported as injured during the incident, one critically; at least four people were stabbed, nine police officers were injured, and 101 people were arrested that night, with 16 further arrests following the event. Backgr...

9:33 PM
It is partly just an excuse.
They will riot at big house parties too.
House as in the "music".

Although there are rumours that these riots weren't started by the sports fans, but by external groups looking to cause trouble.

Hockey doesn’t count. :)

Haha, okay. There are never football riots here.

@Mahnax Wow. That would even be rather serious for a European football riot.
It is almost exclusively limited to football here.

Nowadays we have a subspecioe of hooligans: "Italian Hooligans".

9:35 PM
So anyway, we do get lots of pot-smoking foreign tourists that are not exactly well behaved.

> In what is known to be one of the first forms of sports rioting, supporters of the chariot racing team Greens revolted against the Byzantine Empire's leader and supporter of the Greens' rival Blues Justinian. At least half of the Empire's capital of Constantinople (now Istanbul) was burned by the rioters, and 30,000 people were killed.

Oh yes, that.
That was a bad situation.

Yeah typical white trash.
What does white trash do in America to blow off steam?

It appears that Canadia has a more serious problem with this than America has. Apparently they’ve become too Europized.
@Cerberus Blow off?
Right.

9:37 PM
That was a surprising typo.
Haha, wait, I get it.
I meant vent.

See here.

But upon reading it I only thought "huh, why didn't I write blow?", instead of "huh, I misspelled vent".
Odd.

@tchrist It's just Montréal.

@tchrist I think you just have a brutal police force and judiciary.

Oh, yuck.

9:38 PM
@Cerberus I don’t know. But rioting related to dumb circuses rings no bell here.

Hmm.

That é looks disgusting.

Violence must be debellated, I agree with tchrist when He say "stop football"

@Mahnax What? Why?

@Cerberus I'm using a different font.

9:39 PM
@Carlo_R. Deballated == Unwarred?

The é is changing the line height.

That sounds like it is doing a fontsub from a different font.

@Carlo_R. I would like to see proof first that it will in fact help, that they won't just take their rioting to different gatherings, legal or illegal.

I mean "deleted", but I do not know a better word.

Typical British tourists.

9:41 PM
Between 6 and 10 August 2011, several London boroughs and districts of cities and towns across England suffered widespread rioting, looting and arson where thousands took to the streets. The first night that the riots took place was on 7 August 2011 after a protest in Tottenham, following the death of Mark Duggan, a local man from the area, who was shot dead by police on 4 August 2011. The immediate spark for violence was when large numbers of police arrived to disperse the demonstration. Several violent clashes with police, along with the destruction of police vehicles, magistrates...

@Cerb Yes, you are right "stop football" is not enough. It needs a New Order.

Except that they're only medium drunk, since they started drinking only around noon.
@Carlo_R. I think you already tried that.

Italian Fascism, also known simply as Fascism (Italian: Fascismo), is the original capital-"F" fascist ideology in Italy and the world. Italian Fascism is based upon Italian nationalism and the restoration of "Italia Irredenta" (claimed unredeemed Italian territories) to Italy as well as territorial expansionism that Italian Fascists deemed necessary for a nation to assert its superiority and strength to avoid succumbing to decay. Italian Fascists claim that modern Italy is the heir to ancient Rome and its legacy, and historically supported the creation of an Italian Empire to provide "v...

Some Dutch hooligans in my neighbourhood.
Or perhaps not-yet-hooligans.

@Cerberus From here, pulled up by Google Images.
@Cerberus They clearly need some hooligettes to soften their demeanor.
