> We present two cases of female patients who experienced rapid and sustained reduction of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms immediately following anesthetic-based EEG-guided intraoperative dream induction. ajp.psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/appi.ajp.20230698
> a 26 year old woman experienced a traumatic knife attack and subsequently developed acute stress disorder. She was brought to the operating room, underwent induction with fentanyl and propofol after which she was transitioned to a propofol infusion. She was responsive 11 minutes after stopping the propofol infusion, reporting “waking up in a dream”.
> The dream (as documented on EEG) was a looping nightmare that she had experienced with a new ending. She re-lived the knife attack, however this time her hand was repaired, and she was able to return home to complete errands.
> Fifteen days following her dream, she no longer met criteria for acute stress disorder, and no longer exhibited observable signs of distress when describing her attack.
> Perhaps the propofol produced a physiological state that interrupted reconsolidation of the patient’s traumatic memory, reactivated as a dream. journals.lww.com/aacr/abstract/2022/08000/…

@Robusto And except for nesting-doll yachts
> When we say “tax the rich,” we mean nesting-doll yacht rich. For-profit prison rich. Betsy DeVos, student-loan-shark rich.
@CowperKettle Couldn't have said it better myself.
That's also what we mean when we say "eat the rich."
01:16
@CowperKettle nice, that's two stages done
Archaic term of the day: joe-millerism, an obscene joke
> A famous teacher of Arithmetick had long been married without being able to get his Wife with Child. One said to her 'Madam, your Husband is an excellent Arithmetician'. 'Yes, replies she, only he can't multiply.'
@M.A.R. So will Muslims be able to get pig kidneys?
@tchrist We were just talking about this.

What if someone genetically modifies a human to have more fingers? They would play even better on the piano
@CowperKettle Maybe not. The extra fingers might get in their way.
This kid isn't just technically good, he's actually musical.
@CowperKettle That's Zelensky?
01:48
@Robusto Yes, he was a popular comedy actor :)
I knew he was a comedian. I didn't know he could play the piano with his ----.
I stopped watching TV way before that, so I did not know of his popularity with Russian people as an actor in movie series
> The man has big balls. He was trying to tell the world, but they didn't take him seriously. Until now.
I LOL'd at this comment there
So what. An Empress of the Eastern Roman Empire was a prostitute in her youth
Theodora (; Greek: Θεοδώρα; c. 490 – 28 June 548) was a Byzantine empress and wife of emperor Justinian. She was from humble origins and became empress when her husband became emperor in 527. She was one of his chief advisers. Theodora is a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Oriental Orthodox Church, commemorated on 28 June. == Early years == Theodora was of Greek descent, but much of her early life, including her place of birth, is unknown. Procopius's Secret History is the foremost source of her life before marriage, but is often regarded as slanderous. According to Michael the Syrian...

@CowperKettle You should have a look at Messalina:
Valeria Messalina (Latin: [waˈlɛria mɛssaːˈliːna]; c. 17/20–48) was the third wife of Roman emperor Claudius. She was a paternal cousin of Emperor Nero, a second cousin of Emperor Caligula, and a great-grandniece of Emperor Augustus. A powerful and influential woman with a reputation for promiscuity, she allegedly conspired against her husband and was executed on the discovery of the plot. Her notorious reputation probably resulted from political bias, but works of art and literature have perpetuated it into modern times. == Early life == Messalina was the daughter of Domitia Lepida and her first...
She could, basically, fuck you in half.

5 was very easy (there is a dead giveaway clue). I've been to 4, and recognized it immediately, though the year was a complete stab in the dark.
3 was very much "Well, I'm pretty sure I know what country that is---but I have no idea where in that country it might be---let's just drop a pin in the middle.

@jlliagre See what I mean about the year in 4?!
It could have been taken at any time!
Yes, these car lasted for decades.
They're probably still being driven.
Good job getting #2 year!
That could have been yesterday...
@jlliagre I tend to try to narrow things down to a decade, then round to the nearest 10 (or 5, if I feel more confident). I got lucky.
13:03
Yesterday or 30 years ago, I mean.
@jlliagre Oh, the clothing pretty much nailed it.
Look at the runner's shoes.

Is EL&U 'social media'?

1 hour later…
17:36
@Araucaria-Him SE in general is not social media. The emphasis is on content, not social interaction.
It is more like a wiki.
17:58
@M.A.R. -- Claude AI was asked to write a Persian poem, and it wrote this:
18:09
@Araucaria-Him I would say "yes." It certainly meets MW's definition.
> forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)
It is a "community" (in some sense) and we are sharing "information" (ideally).
18:33
@alphabet Yeah, but the cohesiveness of that "community" is debatable, and the ability to share personal messages is relatively non-existent (unless you want to consider chat, but most users don't use chat at all, and chat isn't really a part of the main site).
@XanderHenderson Well, you can certainly send messages that people take personally
@alphabet Sure. But there is no private messaging, and the messages that we can send are exclusively in the form of comments below questions and answers.

> A few weeks ago I wrote on the grand old rule about not ending sentences with prepositions, which is, quite simply, a long-lived hoax we’d best relegate to history. In that light, I’d like to dismantle the powerful but hopeless idea that language is something to be judged rather than observed. —John McWhorter
I’m voting to close this question because the premise of the question is that song lyrics can be submitted to grammatical judgment. They can't. Neither can literature. — Robusto 11 secs ago

I'm actually fine with robots taking this job.
20:41
@Araucaria-Him Yes. It seems weird but Q&A sites, though ostensibly a knowledge base like wikipedia, is at another view people responding to people, so is often categorized as social media. Reddit and Quora are also considered social media (as well as a knowledge base). The confusion (which I also have) is that you expect things to just be in one category. And despite that being the usual way of thinking theres no law that says something can't be in more.than one category.
21:37
@XanderHenderson I know; I was just making a joke.
@Robusto If you want to replace all of a priest's functions, I have just the robot for you: youtube.com/watch?v=z0NgUhEs1R4
Alright, voting complete.
22:30
@Mitch @alphabet @XanderHenderson Thanks. Was wondering whether prospective employers wanting to big brother on people's social media could ever reasonably expect sites like SE to be included.
23:03
@alphabet Wow, that was creepier than I expected. I didn't know it was going to turn into a White Castle commercial. Is nothing sacred?
23:16
@Araucaria-Him Ah. That's another question. I've never heard of an employer actually asking for your social media accounts proactively--though presumably many will Google your name to see if you're somehow controversial.
@Robusto It's the single funniest video I've ever seen. Yes, my sense of humor is kinda messed up.
@Araucaria-Him I mean, if a Big Brother wants to Big Brother on you, it's gonna Big Brother.
The classification of SE as a "social media" (or not) is kind of irrevant.
@CowperKettle MEOW!
23:51
@XanderHenderson Big Browser is watching you already.
@jlliagre That's why I use Nord VPN! *smiles, and faces the camera*
