So what you're saying is that exposure to phthalates in the womb has lifelong implications for fertility.

Dr. Shanna Swan: 13:02
That's correct.

That's pretty scary.
Shall we see plastic bottles banned?

The Handmaid’s Tale . . .
09:42
The Handmaid's Tale is a dystopian novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, published in 1985. It is set in a near-future New England, in a strongly patriarchal, totalitarian theonomic state, known as Gilead, that has overthrown the United States government. The central character and narrator is a woman named Offred, one of the group known as "handmaids", who are forcibly assigned to produce children for the "commanders" – the ruling class of men. The novel explores themes of subjugated women in a patriarchal society and the various means by which they resist and attempt to gain individuality...
I'm listening to the audiobook "Boys Adrift". Despite good comments on Goodreads, it sounds like psychobabble with some moral panic thrown in thus far.

Word of the day: hogget
> A sheep in its first year is a lamb and his or her meat is also lamb. The meat from sheep in their second year are hogget. Older sheep meat is mutton.
Turns out the Russian word for quarterdeck, shkantsy, is derived from the Dutch schans
I wonder how schans is pronounced
I wonder what schans exactly means in Dutch, what its etymology is
12:21
Maybe @M.A.R. will get it. I don't
@CowperKettle the way those letters are pronounced is, respectively: "zad" (probably intended to mean 'son', but it's kinda an old fashioned meaning and really peculiar), "sad" (I mean it doesn't sound the same, it's the long /A/, but for the sake of the pun I guess), "meme" (yeah this is one of the two letters which really works as an English pun), "lam" (intended to mean 'lame', but doesn't sound the same, again /A/ not /eI/), meme again, and "seen" (the second letter-pun that really works)
My son was very sad today, so I decided to show him some meme. He didn't laugh at all and said that it's a lame meme which he had already seen.
Also referring to the fact that grown-ups can't keep up with every new meme that younguns are into
@CowperKettle There's a similar-sounding word in Persian meaning "chance"
"Change" is probably pronounced "shans" in some European languages.
@CowperKettle Honestly Goodreads reviews suck. A good book is rated probably 3.8 to, like, 4.4. A bad book is also rated 3.8 to 4.4. I doubt I have such a fringe taste in books
@CowperKettle This has been known for a long time and it has fueled efforts to replace PET in bottles. Dad says as long as you're not cruel to the bottle (no freezing water, because ice takes more space and deforms the bottle, no heating, and no other means of damaging the bottle) it should be mostly fine.

@M.A.R. Thank you for a detailed explanation!

I agree.

I guess it will take another 15 years to bring 2 nm to the market.
And maybe the progress will halt there.
Or maybe it will not even reach 2 nm.
It's so expensive to make even 7 nm chips.
I gifted a laptop to my dad in 2013, and it still works just fine. Back in the 1990s, a seven-year-old CPU would be considered ancient.
13:08
Is 7nm a thing! I didn't realise they got so small

What kinda chip you got in there, a Dorito?
You're usin' a 286? Don't make me laugh

Black hairy tongue syndrome (BHT) is a condition of the tongue in which the small bumps on the tongue elongate with black or brown discoloration, giving a black and hairy appearance. The appearance may be alarming, but it is a harmless condition. Predisposing factors include smoking, xerostomia (dry mouth), soft diet, poor oral hygiene and certain medications. Management is by improving oral hygiene, especially scraping or brushing the tongue. == Signs and symptoms == Hairy tongue largely occurs in the central part of the dorsal tongue, just anterior (in front) of the circumvallate papil...

I doubt it will do it, but still haha.
May be a pretext for banning YouTube in Russia.
I can't imagine that too.
There are so many popular video bloggers on YouTube.
@MattE.Эллен it's very annoying because that's all I have in life. one-boxing of tweets here
otherwise you have to copy the link -and- the text or do a screen shot, all of which are a pain.
we need easier tools to spread memes
increase our R factor

@Mitch life is suffering. what does that make memes?

> Overall, regardless of their weight, the girls stated more frequently that they had depressive symptoms. In 2012, 17 percent of the girls and 6 percent of the boys did so. By 2015, the proportions of adolescents with these symptoms had risen to 32 percent for the girls and 13 percent for the boys. The corresponding figures for 2018 were 34 and 19 percent respectively. medicalxpress.com/news/…

@CowperKettle what happened at 2018?
The rise seems pretty steep
17:15
Oh, it's the same subjects
They grew up
@M.A.R. Growing up is a major cause of depression; efforts are afoot to combat it.
For instance, Donald Trump somehow avoided it.

Operation Spring Awakening (German: Unternehmen Frühlingserwachen) was the last major German offensive of World War II. The operation was referred to in Germany as the Plattensee offensive and in the Soviet Union as the Balaton defensive operation. It took place in Western Hungary on the Eastern Front and lasted from March 6 until March 15, 1945. It was a failure for Nazi Germany. The operation, initially planned for March 5, began after German units were moved in great secrecy around Lake Balaton (German: Plattensee) to secure the last significant oil reserves still available to the Axis powers...
Germany's last offensive of WWII. My grandfather lost an eye there.
He got very drunk a couple of times after the war and smashed his glass prosthetic eye in a fit of emotion.
He was depressed that the Army dismissed him for losing an eye.

@CowperKettle So Paris is more dense than New York? Really? Or is it just that the formal boundaries are limited, whereas Houston includes more suburbs?
And what about Tokyo? Does New York include all five burroughs?
@Xanne Does New York not have the typical North-American concept of 'suburbs'?
A.k.a. the suburban sprawl?
I watched a video serious about the phaenomenon recently, if you're interested.
By a North-American.
I have never seen such neighbourhoods in Europe (though they might exist in places I haven't visited, not sure).
But I'd be surprised to see them in a place like Paris.

@Cerberus Yes, northern New Jersey and Long Island and Westchester county and southwestern part of Connecticut are all considered part of the New York suburbs
But yeah there are all sorts of problems about what consists of 'the city'. NYC is special among American cities in its density, Houston is more typical - instead of thinking 'suburbs' think 'suburban' that is the house lots are predominantly single family with large lots over most of the land within city limits.
New York City includes Staten Island, much of which looks like a typical suburb. Painted wrought iron fences. Houses (single family) with yards.
It is true that it depends on what you count as part of a city.
The methods must be aequal between cities.
