Q: Word or phrase for "nostalgia for something that hasn't ended"?

AlreadyNostalgicIs there an English word or phrase for the feeling of nostalgia for something that has not ended or left yet? For example, the feeling that one would get when walking through campus the week before graduation, knowing that they will be leaving shortly. Or the feeling one may have near the end o...

How do you say "this all looks amateurish" and still be constructive? — Robusto 2 mins ago
Yeah, it's incredible how bad they've made the new theme.
I'm sure there are 100,000 people in the world who could design a better theme.
So why like this?

Q: "ELU updated site theme is ready for testing" is ready for voting

Mitch "ELU updated site theme is ready for testing" has been vigorously voted on. It turns out that currently it is 21 down and 9 upvotes. At a net of -9 votes, it is automatically not displayed on the Questions list. This meta-question is simply to make it more visible and easily reachable. It...

so that people who haven't visited the meta-question won't miss it and be able to vote.
shall I that one, too, so that people can see it in the "featured on meta" sidebar?
@Robusto I've siouxed you so many times by now I've lost count. And curly-sued you, and boy-named-sued you. How come you still don't live Under the Bridge?
@Robusto another great rapper.
History forgot.
Always does.
@Robusto I smell a right there. You're posting your shit on the wrong site.
@MattE.Эллен Yay!
well, I think if there are two things featured then that's probably worse than if there's one, as people won't know which to chose
I just had a cold shower.
20:32
Usually you spell that as "I just had a hot poo".
Well, I am trying to be more appropriate in chat.
Godspeed.
Trying to develop some interpersonal skills.
The new design quite clearly proclaims "We didn't spend money on a professional."
That's what the White House and the Congress have been proclaiming for years.
Meaning to say, I don't think people care.
What's that principle called again.
Dunning-Kruger.
20:34
These are the end times.
Oh? Is it raptchah again? Kewl.
Woodward's book, Fear, on chaos in the White House will be out in a few days.
an ending is just a beginning that hasn't started yet. nahmusty
Oh I got a new book in the mail today. Sounds truly exciting.
"Futility" by one William Gerhardie.
A surprise gift from a close friend.
Anyone heard of it?
Sounds truly exciting.
Actually dafuq am I doing in here, I wanted to go read it.
Must be someone who knows you really well.
20:37
I messaged him as much immediately.
That the title alone could be my biography.
And then I read the back, and fuck me, it probably actually is.
@MattE.Эллен Currently I am of the belief that there will be infinitely many universe expansions and contractions, and we are only in one cycle now.
@RegDwigнt those books you write when you're not looking
@JasperLoy that is possible
> Hailed by his famous contemporaries including Edith Wharton, H.G. Wells, Katherine Mansfield, Graham Greene, and Evelyn Waugh, who called him a “genius,” William Gerhardie is one of the twentieth century’s forgotten masters, and his lovely comedy Futility one of the century’s neglected masterpieces.

It tells the story of someone very similar to Gerhardie himself: a young Englishman raised in Russia who returns to St. Petersburg and falls in love with the daughter of a hilariously dysfunctional family—all played out with the armies of the Russian Revolution marching back and forth outside
Recently I learned that a PCIe SSD is faster than a SATA SSD.
I am so going to read that now, guys.
Take care.
20:39
@RegDwigнt I didn't know paper books could be part of a phishing scam.
Last month I learned that a SSD is faster than a HDD.
@Robusto yeah I still haven't paid, but am still waiting for that idiot to send videos of me wanking to all my friends.
@RegDwigнt Godspeed
Worse still, two days later I got another copy of the same scam mail from someone else.
@RegDwigнt I will check out all your youtube videos soon!
20:40
Also haven't paid, also no video.
I am disappoint.
@RegDwigнt Meh, you're probably too busy building Lego shit to ever wank.
It is much worse. I am too busy editing videos to even build Lego shit.
Sucks to be me.
Over and out.
Lego and ogle are anagrams.
gole and egol are anagrams
So are ant and tan.
20:42
granamas is an anagram, but I won't tell you what of
@MattE.Эллен It's an anagram of ars magna. @Cerberus take note.
That is good.
Ars longa, vita brevis.
Good, good.
Ad astra per aspera. Too bad there is no J in there.
And "Sam I am" is an anagram of miasma. @TheodoreGeisel take note.
20:46
I took some time to figure out why you pinged a non-existent chat user.
That looks like the Grinch.
@Robusto Dr Seuss is dead. Thanks. A lot.
did Robusto kill him?
No. I supported him hugely, in fact.
My kids had just about all his books.
20:51
@MattE.Эллен Did Robusto kick the can?
@MattE.Эллен I don't know if that was meant to be funny, but I guess you were trying to write namaste?
Did Robusto hit a man?
What happened to Mr Shiny? Is he at Aruba for summer vacation?
@JasperLoy I was deliberately misspelling it because the whole thing was meant to seem pseudo-wise
so, a sort of joke
Mr Shiny went to the beach
20:54
last I saw, Mr Shiny was playing a card game with his children
@MattE.Эллен I see. Your sense of humour is beyond my understanding. It is of a very high level.
Wow, I just tried to unselect "try new themes" and I can't go back! Eeeuuuwww!
@Mitch Sounds like an episode of Mr Bean goes to the beach.
@Robusto That happened to me too.
Interestingly, did you know that Mr Bean appeared in a James Bond movie? Rowan Atkinson acts in Never Say Never Again.
20:56
@JasperLoy It's like I'm playing 4 dimensional chess against myself but neither of us know how to play chess and I'd prefer to be eating a hamburger
And Tom also had a post about that happening to him on the Meta question, but he deleted it.
So it just took some time for the old design to reappear.
@Cerberus I guess the text should have read "buy new themes" ...
Hey there; What's the rule name for mixing letters? e.g when /s/ arrives to /j/ is pronounced as /ʃ/ in:
What's your name?
We can have variations on a theme.
@mini In this case, it could be palatalisation.
@Robusto Buy?
21:01
/s/ --> /j/: /ʃ/ what's your name?
/d/ --> /j/: /dʒ/ What did you say?
/t/ --> /j/: /tʃ/ ... what you say!
/z/ --> /j/: /ʒ/ as you know

Are there more rules?
@Cerberus I remember sth like 'luison' or like that when pronouncing!
@mini All of those are probably like palatalisation.
@mini Liaison?
That term is more often used for French, I believe, and it is about how a silent letter at the end of a word is sometimes pronounced, "liaising" the two words together.
21:22
@Cerberus I'm pretty sure that they have made scientific "claims" which anyone could search for and easily find.
Rather, I'd suggest you take a look at this graph:
The rate of change for the last few decades is clearly unparalleled in traceable history.
21:35
@Færd Well, there is more or less consensus among climate scientists that temperatures are getting higher and that this is mainly caused by the greenhouse effect, which in turn is mainly caused by increasing greenhouse gases.
But I think climate scientists would not ascribe such a short-term rise in temperatures to the long-term development so easily?
22:01
@Cerberus You do have some point there. The graph may not be accurate enough in its earlier parts to account for temperature bumps and plunges over courses of a few decades.
And there's a non-zero possibility that so far we've been experiencing one of those.
But we'd be wise to heed the overwhelming probability that this is the onset of the catastrophic long-term greenhouse pattern.
Oh Tuesday
22:14
@Robusto Post about that.
@snailboat What do you mean, 2.7xx to 1?
@Færd I assume that what will happen is whatever the climate scientists tell us.
To assume otherwise would seem foolish.
And to try to analyse the data myself, contrary to their analyses, even foolisher.
22:33
no no no. the earth is flat. the temperature is rising because the volume is constant but the pressure is rising, eventually the heat will melt the icewall that surrounds us all and the temperature will start dropping until it's cold enough for the icewall to freeze up again. We'll be fine.
keep consuming

Q: Is there a better term for "non-developer"?

Clay BridgesThere are some things only a developer can do. When I have a task that doesn't require a developer -- that anybody can do -- and I need to call that out, I'm stuck for a great way to describe those people. "Non-developer" is the pithiest, most descriptive one I can think of, but I do not love it....

@MattE.Эллен Won't we be overwhelmed by an army of supernatural beings if the wall should fall?
(I've only seen the first couple of seasons, so I never got to find out what these beings were nor what would happen if they could breach the wall.)
22:55
@MattE.Эллен Sigh. The curvature of the 'earth' is negative. The Sun is at the center and the surface of the Earth encircles it. This is elementary science. Just look out your window.
That explains a lot.
My life suddenly makes sense now.
It's science
But science and rationality sometimes have to take a back seat to stupidity.
They do.
When they're sitting in the front I can't see the film sometimes.
I'm off (literally (is there anything that is truly literal)) for a bit. Then I'll metaphorically be back on.
So I'd rather have science in my back.
How rhetorical of you.
23:06
@JasperLoy Nice shade of blue. Did I mention that already?
@Cerberus They're back seat drivers to the idiots up front who can see the road but keep pointing out funny bill boards that we can't
@Cerberus I don't have time to mention cripes that thing that I've forgotten.
I'll have to work out how to get a hiatus in a chiasmus. and a zeugma in a syllepsis.
Don't hyperbaton.
What? I barely know her!
As in, you knew her, in a bare manner?
Knew, in the Biblical sense?
What a crude euphemism.
@Mitch Nope. It's another colour in Paint. My old laptop crashed twice the past 2 hours.
