Oh, funny.
@Cerberus The answer I was thinking of was "time."
user19161
@skullpatrol Very good. Have a cookie.
user19161
@reg Do you have any idea why I could cast 46 votes yesterday? I thought the max was 40.
@skullpatrol Right, that too!
@Cerberus It's funny... I was skimming transcript and confused at first. At a glance at the small versions of photos this could be the industrial part of any American city. Sure, I didn't recognize it, but we have tons of ugly things... and it's quite gloomy out today near me so the sky even felt right for east coast USA.
Sorry, @Reg, that you're stuck with such ugly buildings that I thought they were ours for a moment.
18:18
@aediaλ Heh, well, we have tons of ugly neighbourhoods too, basically most post-war suburbs.
So thankfully not the most visible parts of the country, but still.
Modernism has done this to the world.
A shameful style that does not deserve the name.
looks out window It's so dark out now I wish I were done work. It feels like it's got to be quitting time. But now it won't rain of course. Just menacing me again, it is.
@Cerberus I know!
slaps weather — Bad, bad weather!
They should have called it Pukefying or or... SquareUglyBoxism or something!
Aww thanks.
Agreed.
There is a style called Brutalism.
Jez
Jez
@Cerberus yeah it's pretty bad over here too

18:21
Brutalist architecture is a style of architecture which flourished from the 1950s to the mid 1970s, spawned from the modernist architectural movement. Examples are typically very linear, fortresslike and blockish, often with a predominance of concrete construction. Initially the style came about for government buildings, low-rent housing and shopping centers in order to create functional structures at a low cost, but eventually designers adopted the look for other uses such as college campus buildings. Critics of the style find it unappealing due to its "cold" appearance, projecting an ...
I forgot about that.
@Jez Here it's sunny.
Though the sun is setting.
At least they were honest with that 'un.
Yup.
I'm going out for a run, later!
Enjoy!
18:22
I hate running, but thanks!!
Well, that's why I don't do it to myself. Canna thee walk instead?
Jez
Jez
I think this is the first time I've felt really bummed out after not having a job.
Before it was a nice novelty.
Aw, I'm sorry.
@aediaλ Those calories won't burn themselves! Walking doesn't really work, alas...
Later!
Jez
Jez
This time though I really wanna punch the bastards that were complaining about me
18:24
@Jez You will find a new one!
Jez
Jez
Especially considering a bunch of them pissed me off equally
they need to introduce laws that say you can sue for unfair dismissal no matter how long you've been working there :-)
@Jez What's your profession?
Jez
Jez
Programming
Within that domain, what specifically?
Jez
Jez
well i do various things. ASP.net with C#, javascript, SQL, etc.
18:30
Are you a utility infielder or a specialist? Sounds like the former.
Jez
Jez
perhaps; I'd be more sure if I knew what that meant
some kind of American Football term?
An infielder would be baseball :D
@aediaλ I am stuck with most beautiful buildings. I don't live in any of those craps.
@Jez Generalist vs. specialist.
I only have to endure them from time to time, on my way from A to B.
Jez
Jez
18:33
@Robusto what would an example of a specialist be then
user19161
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 I don't see A or B on the world map.
You don't see many things.
For starters, you are not on the world map, either.
user19161
That's true. I don't really belong to this world.
Jez
Jez
@RegDwight you in Ireland?
Not to my knowledge.
user19161
18:35
I know where Reg is, but if I tell you I would have to kill you.
@Jez Well, DBA, middle-tier developer, UI Engineer, etc.
@Jez I can't even look at the singer for 3 seconds :(
user19161
@skullpatrol Er why?
Jez
Jez
@Robusto I don't even know how people can get jobs that specialized
probably in very big companies i guess
user19161
@Jez Some people get lucky you know.
user19161
18:37
Most people with high salaries are actually quite stupid.
@Jez okay, whatever that is... no whatever that is in this chat!
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Yay! I didn't think so, but I'm sorry they have to even be there offending your eyesight.
Jez
Jez
@JasperLoy I'm quite stupid, so how do I get a high salary?
Find a job where no one understands what you do?
user19161
@Jez Well, I can't tell you that until your stupidity has been verified.
18:39
@Jez You get them by being good at a specialty. If you're not a specialist, you're a commodity.
Jez
Jez
yeah, until your specialism becomes passé, at which point you can't get a job anywhere
@JasperLoy Not my type.
Jez
Jez
I'd rather have a wide range of skills
i mean wtf is a 'middle-tier devleloper' when he's at home?
user19161
So @robusto have you found the horse you want yet?
D-76?
user19161
18:42
@aediaλ What's that? I only know about D24 durians.
Aw, it's not so funny now @Jasper betweened me.
It's a developer.
For b/w film or paper.
user19161
D24 is the King of Durians.
They number durians now?
user19161
Not really, I just know this term but have not heard of other numbers.
@Jez I'd rather be employed.
@JasperLoy I faked something together. We'll see.
user19161
18:47
The durian () is the fruit of several tree species belonging to the genus Durio and the Malvaceae family (although some taxonomists place Durio in a distinct family, Durionaceae). Widely known and revered in southeast Asia as the "king of fruits", the durian is distinctive for its large size, unique odour, and formidable thorn-covered husk. The fruit can grow as large as long and in diameter, and it typically weighs one to three kilograms (2 to 7 lb). Its shape ranges from oblong to round, the colour of its husk green to brown, and its flesh pale yellow to red, depending on t...
user19161
Shit, it turns out they really do number durians!
@Jez Not if your specialty is general enough. I'm a front-end developer, a.k.a. UI, UX, whatever. I am constantly getting recruited. If you can do what I do in the area I live in, you are very much in demand.
Jez
Jez
Oh, you're a UX guy? breaks your nose
I bloody hate UX people.
people like you ruined Firefox
Hello.
@Jez Well, then I won't tell you what I think about people who are unemployed because they don't have a marketable skillset, but feel free to whine about it in a public forum and occasionally beg for free services from people who do have real jobs.
18:55
Ohai!
How's things?
pretty good, thanks :) how are you?
Jez
Jez
@Robusto you dont do much to change the fact that I hate you with that kind of crap.
@Jez What a pity, since obviously I live to please you.
Jez
Jez
Pizza delivery guys always say "hi boss". one day im gonna say, "hi servant."
18:57
@MattЭллен Awesome! I'm in Physics and we're having a blast.
@Mahnax literally? ;)
It didn't rain on the way home!
@MattЭллен sighs Not literally. But it's fun.
@Mahnax ace. Physics is a great subject
@MattЭллен Well, we aren't doing anything.
Jez
Jez
@Mahnax you're in physics, and talking online?
Jez
Jez
shouldn't you be watching that beaker?
@Jez Yep.
Jez
Jez
what you up to today @Matt ?
@Jez Oh, not much right now, just browsing site n stuff.
you been searching for jobs?
Hey @Robusto, do you know if it's still possible to buy Photoshop CS2 or CS3? If yes, how?
Jez
Jez
19:07
yeah, making profile public again on jobs sites
I kind of miss Photoshop 7. Like an old buddy.
Jez
Jez
GIMP 2.8 baby
Well, work doesn't understand how to deal with things that don't involve paying another company and having someone to blame if the software has problems.
I don't know how we ever ended up being allowed to have FOSS browsers even, except begging that we have to test for them.
I only kinda blame them. The world's gone hella litigious.
Jez
Jez
bah
i blame em
or maybe just America
2
You started it. Shouldn't have colonized us
:P
19:15
Fair enough.
England is to blame for some things.
How was the run?
Moderately good.
Somehow it's always better with a hangover.
Any idea why?
It is paradoxical.
Whoops, I turned you off for a moment while adjusting my giant monitors. Um. You have the awfulness of the hangover, so you don't notice you should be suffering the awfulness of running?
The process of "sweating out the alcohol"
could have something to do with it...
but I could be wrong.
@Cerberus tell me if you hear what I hear (about 1:26)
19:24
@Cerberus It could be that you notice the endorphins produced by running - I think they call it a 'runner's high'? - more when you're hungover because there is more of a contrast compared to how you felt when you started off.
A- hole?
Aww did you see this damselfly on the front of wiki today? So cute!
Jez
Jez
We are the pure and chosen few, and all the rest are damned. There's room enough in hell for you, we don't want heaven crammed.
@aediaλ So basically you're saying that "sweating out the alcohol" is a sobering-up process and this intensifies the "runner's high"?
@Vitaly Do you mean Photoshop the app or CS2/3 the suite(s)?
19:32
@skullpatrol I don't think there is much evidence that "sweating out the alcohol" is a real thing. You sober up at the rate you process alcohol, regardless of what else you're doing.
@aediaλ Yes. The endorphin effect is real.
And for hangovers I recommend lots of water and electrolytes.
What I was saying is that Cerb might notice running makes him feel better when he has a hangover more than he notices it when he doesn't have a hangover. In both cases, running hard may be physically grueling but produce a good emotional affect, but if you are feeling crappy to start off, you might notice it more when you feel better.
@aediaλ Anecdotally speaking, I notice the good feeling more when I'm feeling good.
Gatorade. Regular Gatorade with sugar, none of those alternative versions.
1 min ago, by Robusto
And for hangovers I recommend lots of water and electrolytes.
That's essentially what Gatorade is.
19:37
Yes.
@aediaλ I don't know: a medium hangover doesn't make me feel bad exactly, just a bit fuzzy and tired. There is no pain to be relieved.
@Cerberus Well, if there's no pain in your hangover, you're not drinking hard enough. Clearly.
Mmm. Brawndo, the thirst mutilator! It's got what plants crave!
Sorry, where was I? Think for one moment about oral rehydration solutions and there we go...
user19161
Very simple. Don't drink and you won't get a hangover. QED.
@Robusto The other apps from the suite aren't needed. Yes, the app.

Q: What is difference between implicit and explicit?

MartinI have seen these words all the time in IT/Computer programming. Examples: "How to explicitly render a template" and "do not implicitly assign to the local variable". I am dyslexic and hard time to interpret the meaning of both words.

user19161
GR
@MattЭллен Haha, nice. I think it's time QEII visited the westmark of her realm and teach them proper English.
I heard oot and a boot.
me too! Good.
@Cerberus I'll assemble a posse
@Robusto It was only a medium hangover, obviously. I rarely drink way too much.
19:48
Haha.
And shouldn't that be babby?
"How is babby formed?"
Or what were the exact words?
user19161
@MattЭллен Is that what they teach the kids in schools these days?
how is babby formed? lol, classic
@Robusto I can only find that on eBay, and most of them require PayPal, while Russia is still banned in PayPal IIRC.
@MattЭллен Haha I know that one, brilliant.
Especially the pronunciation.
It's funny all over :D
user19161
What? I have to download 50 MB of updates after a fresh install on release day?
user19161
@EugeneSeidel Sorry, I was the one who flagged it for deletion. I thought it did not answer the question.
19:58
why not?
@Vitaly Ah, well, then I can't help with that, sorry. Adobe is currently at CS5.5, Photoshop 12. I don't even remember what version of Photoshop came with CS2 or CS3.
user19161
@EugeneSeidel The question asks about the correct pronunciation and spelling of "asterisk" and why people might spell or pronounce it wrongly. Your answer does not directly address that.
the question is titled "what is the correct pronunciation of asterisk?"
i gave them a mnemonic to remember it
@Robusto Yeah, well, thanks anyway. 9.0 and 10.0, I think.
@Vitaly What do you need 2 and 3?
20:02
@Vitaly Recent versions of Photoshop are 64-bit, which helps a lot, btw.
@Cerberus Compatibility issues.
Ah I see.
Aw. I couldn't imagine jumping back off this 64-bit bandwagon.
@aediaλ Word.
20:03
Much improvement?
What have you noticed most?
I can run like all the CS suite at the same time on a freaking laptop that now supports 8 gigs of ram, that's what.
Ah so it's the RAM?
And the ram helps even though a lot of software isn't 64-bit yet.
OK so it's just the RAM?
user19161
Even with 1GiB RAM 64-bit Linux is recommended over 32-bit.
20:05
@Cerberus More than that. Photoshop 64-bit can handle multiple layer effects seamlessly over a ginormous amount of layers, filters are instantaneous, that sort of thing.
I had Win7 on my home gaming machine when I got it... I guess about a year ago? But I didn't have to work/Photoshop/etc. much on there. So it was nice, but I didn't see the difference acutely.
@Robusto And this is not due to the increased amount of memory that PS can reserve for itself?
@Cerberus If you have the memory, that helps. But 64-bit processing is, roughly speaking, twice as fast as 32-bit, all else being equal.
user19161
@aediaλ Most users would not notice any difference. Many of these improvements are only found when you do benchmark tests. However if you do things like video editing 64-bit can be much faster.
Hmm OK.
20:08
@JasperLoy Photoshopping is one of those things that are "like video editing."
user19161
@Robusto Twice? That seems too much.
user19161
@aediaλ I only have 2 GiB on my laptop. :(
@JasperLoy Well, theoretically speaking, 64-bit is 2x 32-bit. But that's ignoring all other things that an application has to do, like (especially) disk access.
And it turns out that according to Adobe, the main difference is in keeping larger files in RAM without disk writes.
> The primary advantage of using the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS5 is to access amounts of RAM beyond what Photoshop can access as a 32-bit application. Photoshop can take the best advantage of more than 4 GB of RAM only it runs as a 64-bit application. If you use files large enough to need more than 4 GB of RAM, and you have enough RAM, all the processing you perform on your large images can be done in RAM, instead of swapping out to the hard disk.
@JasperLoy My non-work laptop probably is about that. And I have a laptop graveyard with one that probably has like, 512K.
user19161
@aediaλ Oh, that won't even run GNOME properly!
20:14
My work laptop is 8GB. My home workstation is 16GB. Why not? RAM is cheaper than dirt now.
user19161
@Robusto And your TV is over 9000 inches!
@Vit: Did you notice the green "ashes"?
@JasperLoy I know :( And it had a dying hdd, so the last I used it, it may have been running Ubuntu off a cd or USB stick. But I have to clean the computer graveyard eventually and be realistic about whether to resurrect these things. Of course, since I moved, they're like... in a box somewhere that I'll get to eventually.
Were they really that remarkable?
@aediaλ Eventually. Of course.
@Robusto drools I don't think I have more than 8GB anywhere.
20:17
Vitaly has even more, I believe.
user19161
@aediaλ I wonder what one can do with old computers. Sell them to a scrap metal company?
Use them to operate as a media system?
I have dual 23" work monitors! I'm a big unicorn, really, I am! I can compete with @Rob's tv!
@aediaλ My TV laughs at your 23" monitors.
Mar 16 at 19:06, by aedia λ
I even spatula'd it open to give it more RAM.
I think I told you about the Mac Mini.
user19161
20:19
Clearly 9000 >> 23. QED.
user19161
@aedia Are you upgrading your Ubuntu today as well?
Nobody with Ubuntu is unpacked, so no.
@aediaλ But if you throw away an old computer, immediately you will find that you need it for something after all.
Aaaugh I know!
I even found a use for my old iPhone as a remote for iTunes so I pretty much never have to look at the ugly thing.
get rid of a computer? next you'll be telling me you can give books to charity shops
user19161
20:24
@aediaλ iPhone is old? I thought it came out only yesterday! I am still using cameraless internetless hp.
user19161
@MattЭллен More like libraries perhaps.
@JasperLoy charity shops here take unwanted books
@JasperLoy I think it's one of the first or second ones; I got an Android device when last I switched.
> When running in 64-bit mode, Photoshop CS5 uses all the ram you can fit into your computer.
user19161
@Robusto Hmm, that might be a hyperbole!
20:28
@JasperLoy I think they're talking about the RAM slots, not the computer case.
giggles
@aediaλ Gah, don't remind me. One of our cats puked on a UPS, wrecking it precisely in such a way that the next time the power went out it self-destructed.
@Cerberus What?
@Robusto Oh noes! That's... Um, I feel bad that I'm laughing so hard at that anecdote.
The thing about a UPS is, you hide it behind stuff so that you never really see it, so you tend not to notice defects like cat puke all over it.
20:38
nods Understandable.
But funny. And tragic.
@aediaλ Hahaha.
But it was false alarm, just pollen.
Oh, you mean that. I was thinking of something resembling the æ character.
And no, clouds here can be all sorts of color.
OMG it's the happening
Guess what this map is about.

He is also known for filming his movies (and staging his plots) in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was raised. Most of Shyamalan's commercially successful films were co-produced by Disney's Touchstone Pictures film division. In 2008, Shyamalan was awarded the Padma Shri by the government of India. @Cerberus is it pollen related?
@Cerberus judging by the shapes of the areas, something to do with human genetics, as in inheritable traits.
@MattЭллен Nope.

But what?
What is it then?
Hint: Matt is partly responsible for England's partially light shade.

Notice how many light eyes they still have in Turkey.
@Robusto Freak.
@Cerberus Hey, green is cool. Some countries even have a Green Party.
Uhuh, whatever you say.
@Cerberus Well, fine. I didn't want to date you anyway.
No, it's too late. You blew it.
Besides, I have to motor. CU later.

Aw I missed the maps while I was fooding!
That blue eyes map is pretty.
I was able to play Bioshock before using GB3 but the usual problems of an underpowered system resulted; the game was slow and not enjoyable. After using GB3 and most of the features it offers, I was able to get a much better, very noticeable difference in the playability and speed of the game, lifting my average frame rate from about 12 frames per second to a very decent 24 FPS.
Note that I got a nearly doubled frame rate, without buying or installing a single bit of new hardware on the system. To me, that’s worth every penny of the price tag ($0.00) on Game Booster 3.
Huhwha?
I honestly know very little about what a good videogame frame rate is.
I suppose it would be good if it were lots, like enough to match your 60 Hz display?
21:56
@aediaλ Yes, but there is an upper limit as to what you can still distinguish.
I believe 30 is fine for most people.
Not if you're playing an ego shooter.
Then 30 looks like the game hangs.
20 is probably noticeably choppier but still well playable; 10 would feel very choppy, but probably still playable.
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Well OK, but those games are boring anyway.
Don't tell that to me!
I'm rather talking about a real-time RPG, where speed is of some importance, but it's not that important.
But we are a dying race.
21:58
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 For the record, this is an exaggeration.
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Are we? But everyone likes to play Civ and Skyrim?
@Cerberus Yeah it is. But it's noticeable and it's extremely annoying.
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 I think what matters is not the average frame rate, but the minimum.
@Cerberus you should ask @Rob or @Kit if they would find a frame rate of 30 in Skyrim acceptable.
If it never drops below 20, you probably won't be annoyed.
@RegDwightΒВBẞ8 Those kids are spoiled.
