Q: Is there a word for 'groups' that implies mutual exclusivity?

mattbryanswanI'm creating data structures for a web application and I have a list that I need to categorize, but, for technical reasons, I need to avoid a nested structure, like categories. I want to create then a 'group' that I can use to collect like values, but I would like to use a name for this that impl...

@Gasparo Hooray! How are you?
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Still trying to get well. I believe I can do it this year. =D
:)
@Gasparo What have you been up to?
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 The usual stuff of sorting out my thoughts, taking some medication, walking, singing, watching movies, and talking to some people now and then.
03:21
Which movies?
I want to see that Downsizing movie for all the oversized props. I hear the movie is not great, though.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Well, a recent movie that has already won some awards and that is very, very meaningful is Lady Bird.
It was released at the end of last year and stars the beautiful Saoirse Ronan.
You would be surprised to hear her actual Irish accent, though in movies she uses an American accent of course.
I hope this one wins some Oscars next month.
I'll have to check it out.
03:51
@tchrist Upon reflection I think that would be a compound comprising æt (at, to, from) and eówan (show), i.e., to "show from" or "manifest from" which works well with the sentence you chose in your response yesterday, Æteowþ min boᵹa on ðam wolcnum (Show-from my bow on the clouds" or "My bow show-from on the clouds" or even "Show from the clouds on my bow" etc.).
@FaheemMitha What do you think? Everyone hates it of course. Except maybe for those hard-boiled staunch supporters of the regime or the military who proudly send off their sons to the-wasting-of-two-years-of-their-youth program.
AKA the compulsory military service, introduced by the First Pahlavi and retained through all the ups and downs of our recent history because we have really changed so much at roots.
Sorry, I'm a bit angerpisst this morning. We have changed in many respects.
@FaheemMitha That's a funny notion of fairness and non-discrimination. So if everyone is treated equally unfairly, it makes it more fair?
Women enjoy special rights everywhere in the world (like maternal leaves, mother's pensions, etc) and are also subject to discriminatory treatments all over the world. It's tricky to find the line between these two categories.
I don't think it's necessarily discriminatory to exempt women from having to serve harsh terms in military camps in the boonies and to leave it to them to choose whether they want to do that stuff or not.
That's generally speaking. However, the devil, of course, is in the details.
@FaheemMitha Aw, thank you!
(Correction: angerpisst --> angepisst)
04:14
@Robusto Thanks. That makes some sense.

Q: What's a word that means both 'source' and 'sink'?

Andres RiofrioIn the sense of: it can emit data but it can also receive data. Or water. Or gas. Or whatever.

08:31
@Færd I'm in favor of sharing the pain. Though I suppose Iranian women already have plenty to put up with.
@Færd I don't know. That's why I asked.
I'm certainly no fan of the military. So the compulsory service is just an unpleasant waste of time?
@Færd So the compulsory military service before the Islamic Revolution continued after the Islamic Revolution. That is strange.

@FaheemMitha Compulsory military service is always unpleasant. It's just something you need to do if you live in certain countries.

Hi, I have a question:
Will the correct answer be "Not only does Earth Day deserve a commemoration, but also our total dedication." or "Earth Day deserves not only a commemoration, but also our total dedication."
11:29
Ok, so the second one is better.
Here's the other question I'm not sure of:
What will be the correct answer here?

1. He inquired where she was going, to which she replied, Pune as her husband was starting a company called Infosys and she was shifting to Pune.

or

2. He asked where she was going, she replied Pune because her husband was starting a company called Infosys and so she was shifting to Pune.
11:45
2 is definitely wrong
so indicates a cause and effect
1 is definitely correct
ok thanks
@QuIcKmAtHs no it isn't!
@Rick Both are "correct" for what it's worth. 1 is punctuated wrongly though, it should be He inquired where she was going, to which she replied Pune, as her husband was starting a company called Infosys and she was shifting to Pune
But 2 is also correct. This is a cause and effect, so the "so" is fine. Of the two, given the weird punctuation of 1, I would certainly choose 2.
But both are strange, really. I would also expect something linking the first and second parts of the sentence in 2. I would probably have written it like this: He asked where she was going, and she said she was going to Pune because her husband was starting a company called Infosys there, and so she was moving to Pune.
ok..It was just what I and my friend thought, so both could be wrong
12:01
@Robusto Yes. :)
12:26
I am sorry @terdon. I may have made a mistake. Sorry
12:39
@QuIcKmAtHs Hey, it's OK :)
13:15
@Færd (Addendum) I thought that maybe since Iran is under near constant threat, the citizenry might view military service a bit more positively.
In India, for example, the lunatic actions of the govt are often viewed much more positively than warranted because of how they frame things. Case in point, demonetization, which was described as being about fixing corruption. Needless to say, it did no such thing. But apparently lots of people in India swallowed it. Of course, this is the same enlightened country where astrology and homeopathy are mainstream.
@Gasparo I just wondered whether people view it as serving a purpose.
> Scores of KFC restaurants across London remained closed today after the fast food giant revealed many of its UK stores ran out of chicken.
13:36
@FaheemMitha I guess the main purpose is to defend the country in which one lives. The real question though is whether life in that country is worth living in the first place.
@Gasparo However life in your country is, being invaded or bombed rarely improves things.
@tchrist KFC = Kelvin Fahrenheit Celsius, amazing.

A: Why does “iris” mean the coloured part of the eye in English?

Eye.
14:44
The important thing is not what you're running for, but what you're running from.
@tchrist If you look too closely at an iris, it gets really kinda gross looking, little tendrils of goo stretching across each other, like multi-colored spider webs.
@Mitch And the bristles.

I don't get it. Why the closevote?

@CowperKettle Who knows? We can only speculate what other people are thinking. My speculation would be that a question like this is just guessing and so is either POB or like proofreading, not explicitly answerable.

What's the adjective form of the word dynamism?
"The dynamism of society is lost." How do I rewrite it using the adjective form of the word dynamism?

@Rick dynamics of?
18:21
I thought so too..can it be "dynamistic" though?
When I looked up the word, it seems like it's an outdated theory before people understood physics
18:53
@Mitch Speculation is helpful though, and there's a little more we can do. We can click on the close vote button to see that the close vote reason is indeed P.O.B.
@CowperKettle You might want to try adding in dictionary definitions to the main body of the question. Some of us are quite insistent on some evidence of research, and the close vote will probably put it in the closure review queue.

Or any other suggestions on making that sentence clearer?
