Q: Word to describe in increase in technology and processes

Miles DavisI am trying to say the following: "The Machine Stops" is E.M. Forster’s literary attempt to call to attention to an ever-growing technicalization of society. Of course, that is not a word, but I need a word or phrase that does the same job. I thought that maybe mechanization might work, but that...

Q: A word or term for: "in another person's body"

AdkinsWhat would be the word or term to describe a person who found themselves in another living person's body or the name of the process that put them there? I've recently had a couple of experiences while sleeping that were so real that they troubled me for months afterwards. I do not believe they ...

Q: Word for someone who gives so many instructions as to be annoying

Michael HoI'm looking for a word to describe the type of person mentioned in the title. For example, someone who always says stuff along the lines of "Put on your seat belt", "Wear your jacket", "Eat your supplements", so much that they become annoying. Sorry if I didn't explain well enough but I hope you...

@Færd Not about her, but I never understood why there needs to be a Nobel Peace Prize. It's hard to determine who deserves it, for one. And it's certainly not a science.
@Færd I think Hillary looks so beautiful in that picture.

@Jasper Well, I'm surprised, but there's no accounting for taste.

Q: Word for "unidirectionally replacable"

ManuelAtWorkIn my example, there is a list of all B's that can replace A: A can be replaced by: * B_1 * B_2 * B_3 The replacement of a B_iwith A is not permitted. How would one call this type of list? So far, I have considered: equivalence list - Implies a two-way relationship, particularly in a...

From the dedication of Le Petit Prince:

@Færd what did the things you delete mean? Just curious

> Toutes les grandes personnes ont d’abord été des enfants.

Oh

Why not étaient des enfants?
To Leon Werth, when he was a little boy.
@M.A.R. ^^^

Oh, why did you delete it?

12:21 PM
I didn't have a quastion about it anymore.

Oh, I thought some mod deleted it, lol.

Heh, no.

Different mods will delete different things, because they have different ideas about what is acceptable in a room or not.

But now I do have a question: why not Toutes les grandes personnes étaient d'abord des enfants?

By the way, I have a question about a scenario.
It's not on ELU, but some other parts of SE.

12:24 PM
@Ahmed You're not misunderstanding English. I'm being unnecessarily pedantic. Nerd humor.
Like everything is a logic puzzle.

If there is a user who is always doing bad things, but the things are not so bad to be flaggable and seem harmless on the surface, but if you put everything together, you realise, aha, all this is very bad indeed, what can you do?
I guess you can send an email to the SE team and explain everything in detail.

@Jasper It's pretty political. In that the award is not always attempting for truth of the situation but to signal to others with the prize givers think is best at the moment.
@Færd that sounds like a word for word translation from English. But it's just not how you say it in French. 'have been' (the translation back) is the appropriate way in French.
@Jasper is it possible to email a mod? That seems outside the possibilities of the SE platform.
Can't you just flag a single item and give an explanation there? (and ask for a private chat with the mod)

@Mitch This user is really toxic. I think they should be suspended for life.

yes, I agree that some uses have a way of not reaching the flaggable threshold, but are still long term toxic
but I haven't seen any lately. or I'm just not aware at the moment

@Mitch You know about the term psychopath? I think I might describe this user as such. And you know what, psychopaths' individual actions may seem harmless, but you put them together over a period and you realise, oh man, it is very very evil.

12:30 PM
or sociopath
psychopaths tend to be noticeable

And you know what? I understand psychopaths very well, because I have been abused by so many of them.
But most people cannot detect this kind of thing so easily.

a sociopath can go under the radar until they lie outright or ... what's the word...
betray you?
that's not really a thing here in conversation
I think microagression is a good label for individual instances that go under the radar

New word for me, lol.

it's been a word increasingly popular only lately

@Mitch It's not someone you will bump into on SE.

12:33 PM
you can find jerks everywhere

Yeah, I will think about it. Maybe I will contact the SE team about this.

church, temple, mosque, shrine, walmart parking lot

LOL

@Jasper the under the radar thing may be hard to deal with from the mod side. it's easier to do something when the jerk does something outright noticeable. a lot of jerk moves are subtle and not perceivable by outsiders.

@Mitch Exactly. Which is why I have not flagged anything, lol.

12:36 PM
right. jerks suck.

And it will be hard for mods to make a decision to suspend a user for life.
Only the SE team might do this.

suspending a user for life seems pretty harsh. the mods would have to see a pattern of toxicity. also probably have more than one non-mod complainant to confirm.
and may be addressable by other means
this isn't who I think it is, is it? someone on ELU?

Nothing to do with ELU.

OK. then I have no idea.

Nobody who was ever suspended even comes close to this person, LOL.

12:41 PM
I've mentioned before I think that whenever I go to reddit, which is rare, I'm shocked at how openly toxic they are there. Not everyone, but more than one in a tree. so I realize that at least at ELU people aren't openly jerks that often (and the jerks tend to learn or leave)
@Jasper I realize it may not be much help, but when people are jerks, it's really a problem with them and not you.

@Mitch Just to add, there are some sayings which go like this: If many people around you are jerks, then you are the real jerk. But I don't agree with this statement, lol.

I don't agree with that either
it may turn out that way, but no not usually
maybe it's saying you're a jerk for staying in an environment of jerks.
like if you're in a gang of nazis, then whether you think you're a nazi or not, you might as well be one. something like that

kicks door down Morning!

Hello Ahmed.

Hello Jasper

12:45 PM

Hey Mitchy

does cartwheels through the room Hi!

@Mitch No, actually you spray a room with bullets, but that sounds unpleasant lol.

crashes out of 5th floor window Hallo!
lands in dumpster below Morning!

You forgot your parachute dude!

12:47 PM
dumpster full of burning tires What's up?
@Ahmed I use gunfire. Because maybe they are blanks?

@Mitch You use blanks because you are a good man, I know.

I have fired M16 before.

I see. Really?

Yes, when I was in the army.

Cool.

12:50 PM
@Jasper What was it like?

The shooting technique is very important.

Like ... fire away from your comrades?

Once you get it right, it's easy to always get the bull's eye.

@Ahmed Yeah, I just want to scare the bejeesus out of people.

It may surprise you, but the breathing is important.

12:51 PM
But they can't know that I have blanks.

If you breath too heavily, you will jerk the rifle.

So I prepare vases and chandeliers and windows ahead of time to break on the sound of my gun.

And you should not pull the trigger too quickly, which will also jerk the rifle.

When the revolution comes, you're on my team

So you need to breathe steadily and squeeze the trigger gently.

12:52 PM
also, please point that thing away from me

It's not a problem for me to hit the bull's eye at 100 m in daylight, I am proud to say.
Oh, and when the blanks drop out, it is really HOT, lol.

@Mitch Um, you are absolutely right but can i disagree? Because on reddit there are better ways to deal with that problem than on SE. There you could fight the person at the same level (which is not wise I know) just before blocking them yourself. And I believe blocking a single user yourself is not an option on SE main sites.

Q: How to put "done from both opposite sides" in one word?

Przemek DSuppose I'm developing a method of covering a symmetric object with a coating. Commonly you'd have to put the coating on the front of the object, rotate it, and do the back. My method processes both sides at the same time. I need a single word to describe it: The novel method of _____ coating pr...

Also, I don't take reddit seriously.
Like I am a regular there and even after saying "Shut the fuck up and mind your own fucking business." to a jerk there I don't get banned. But yeah, it is not good to stoop to... Still, it feels good to say something before blocking an asshole there.

1:10 PM
Reddit does have some good answers to questions.

Yeah.

Never judge a book by its cover, lol.
Never use cliches, lol.

1:24 PM
@Ahmed That doesn't sound like a disagreement. You're showing how to deal with the problem, not saying that there isn't the problem.

2:21 PM
@Mitch Um, yes, I couldn't think of a correct word other than "disagree". What should I have said?
@Mitch They made this site called Voat that is considered better than reddit in the sense of almost no toxicity etc. but when I spent a few days there I found it really really boring.
Voat is considered the nicer version of reddit.
"is" or "was" don't know if that site still exists. I don't care enough to look it up again.

The review queue is getting really long. Please do reviews today.

2:37 PM
@Mitch Can I be on your team as well when the revolution comes? I won't do anything though (being honest) I will just warm the bench and hang around. =)

Is the bench up against the wall?
Because that's where I'll be.

@Mitch What do you call a bunch of frequent blood donors? The IV league.
I have pinged you so many times. Oops.

6:24 PM
@Ahmed disagree means something like contradict. What you were doing (I think) was trying to help me deal with what you agree is the situation. maybe you just wanted to say '...but can I add something?' or '..but can I help you deal with it?' I think that's what you meant. (or maybe you do disagree with my assessment, but what followed just wasn't an explanation of the disagreement.
@Ahmed I only visit reddit if there is a reasonable looking link to something interesting. If something like that happens with voat I might go there.
@Ahmed Oh. I was hoping I could hang out on the bench. Maybe fill up the water cooler. take towels to the laundry. Sign autographs. That kind of low visibility thing.
@Ahmed haha. +1
There. Is that enough pings back to you?

6:41 PM
@Mitch Thanks. I figured that much though.
I thought there might be a pattern or explanation or something.

@Færd Why don't you go to bed?
(And make us happy)

Heh. That oughta be royal us.
@Gigili You could be straight with me and say if there's a problem.

Q: One who doesn't try very hard

ZOBDOBis there a word to describe one who doesn't try very hard? not someone who doesn't try at all, but one who does their work without much enthusiasm or perhaps with as much gusto as others.

@skullpatrol works self up
Now I can calm down.
That does feel better

@Færd The reason why The Little Prince is so beloved in FSL 9French class) other than its simplistic animal anatomical drawings (sorry @KitZ.Fox), is because it entirely avoids the arcane passé simple that French classical literature uses. So it is accessible reading earlier in the French language/literature curriculum.
I realize that doesn't actually give a direct explanation. Sorry.
Not sorry.
That's just the way it is.
But it sounds smart doesn't it?
It sounds like an explanation

7:36 PM
@Mitch Is it used even in children's books?

In fact, there are lots of ELU answers that are like that. Some asks why is X so, and the purported answer talks about χ or Ξ or ξ and then not about them but about Greek.

@Mitch Never fail to cheer me up.

@Færd Hm... I vaguely don't remember much... I don't think Astérix used it (not that it's children's books). I can't think of any others at the moment. Ideas?

@Mitch They tend to ramble, but within a certain proximity.

@Færd The icing on shit cake. Best icing ever.
@Færd right, like they're taking keywords from the question, making new sentences around those keywords, but not addressing the explicit question.
Why does 2+2=4?

7:40 PM
@Mitch You get to ponder those cakes with more care if you use our squat toilets.

Because 1=1. Did you know there are four sides to a square?
@Færd I'm going to ponder other things.

two sides plus two sides. That's still understandably relevant.
@Mitch Well, using those toilets you have no choice but to look at the mess you make.
The cake.

There are 2 sides to every story

two stories make four sides.

That was a trump joke

7:45 PM
Ah.

@Færd sure that's why it sounds good. still doesn't say anything about the question.
@skullpatrol You must have first hand knowledge

Well, at least two sides.

no more than two

No less than one.

OK one it is

7:48 PM
1 < story < 2
If story is real.

All stories are made up.
