@Tonepoet By the way, the unabridged costs about the same as SOED on bookdepository.com
@JasonBourne I believe Merriam-Webster's comes with a C.D., and a one year subscription to their website, which might be why.
@Tonepoet I wasn't trying to compare the value for money though, just telling you a point. I prefer to get the version without the CD, and I don't really need the subscription.

@englishstudent Hmm, unfortunately, I don't know of such a resource for British English. I know that Dilworth's spelling book was popular enough to warrant mention Rev. Dilworth's mention in "Sketches by Boz", by Charles Dickins, but Webster's quickly supplanted it in part because it was easier to use.
@Robusto the Anisakis-Industrial complex is colluding with medical science journalism to... I don't know... gouge with antihelmintics?
It's exactly things like that that drove the October revolution.
@Tonepoet The Compact OED comes with a magnifying glass and OCD to appreciate it all.
@Tonepoet A book like 'Sketches by Boz' better have pictures in it. Or links to the TV special
@JasonBourne Wait... is that a word? what is it supposed to mean?
@Mitch OCD? LOL.
@Mitch Forbearance in the face of suffering.
@englishstudent No. It's funny cause the expectation is that most people work M-F 9-5, and starting the weeks work at 4 on a Friday means that I have 1 hr to do a weeks worth of work.
all fun drained out of it
@JasonBourne We just need to channel our inner compunction to such things to useful tasks.
@JasonBourne that's not 'equanimity'?
@Mitch Equanimity has a different meaning. One is long, one is equal, aha!

wow. I had no idea. I thought I had at least seen all words.
sometimes I see really popular ELU questions pop up years later that I know I'm seeing for the first time, but somehow I missed the first time round.
but also I could be losing memory.
I also have the same feeling about seeing something for the first time and it looks interesting and I'm reading it and thinking I would have answered and I go through the answers and look here, here's an interesting answer I totally agree with. and is actually quite insightful and says even more then I would have said, pointing out special nuances that are really helpful that I wouldn't have thought of and... oh... I wrote that answer.
I guess it would be more interesting if I thought what a stupid answer.
There's at least one. =P
There's an Illustrations credit suggesting there are more too, although unless George Cruikshank's middle name is "Boz" then, 'tis a total scam! <_<
