@Lawrence He apparently used 180 degrees so that his needle on a circular dial would point down straight down at freezing and straight up at boiling. This doesn’t work well below 0 but brine’s freezing point at 0 was the coldest he could reliably measure. Either that or his wife had a fever all the time.

I am an English teacher and keen to learn things in detail to explain to my students. I would like a detailed explanation of why the word “no” can be an adverb if it is being used alone in response to some question. It is not qualifying anything in this usage.
