But I don't need it or want it.
Nor I.
Wow that anne person is really annoyed with us for closing the question.
But it is easily ignored.
I rarely notice it.
@Cerberus Well, it ruins the symmetry of my pages. I can't ignore that. Moreover, I cannot tolerate it.
And Anne's questions do not ruin your symmetry?
Or any of the single-word requests?
15:03
@Cerberus That's the problems. Often a really poor question will get highlighted, forcing me to fart in its general direction.
Okay so it took me a while because the original user doesn't exist anymore, but here are her other questions:
I don't even see the highlighting, most of the time.
> In this poem is the correct English cunt hairy or cunt-hairy
I didn't know English cunts could be correct or incorrect. I thought they were all incorrect.
Otherwise, what's the point?
I think at this point we are just feeding a troll. I regret my decision to be all nice. Trolls don't deserve a meta post.
15:06
I wonder if I should have strung them along a bit farther in order to get them angry enough to spontaneously combust.
Aw, you deleted the meta post! Now my troll-teasing days are over.
@RegDwightѬſ道 I wonder if that user was the same "gamahucher" who was banned from Wikipedia.
I guess it's back to "programming"
Pissflaps.
Personally I vote for "piss-flaps"
For Australian erotic poetry spamming.
@Robusto English cunts are definitely cunt-hairy. Not your regular kind of hairy.
And certainly not ass-hairy.
15:10
@KitFox which ones? The correct ones? or the incorrect ones?
The correct ones, I suppose.
@KitFox But I am interested in the phrase "correct English cunt"; perhaps I should ask on ELU.
If you consider Upper-Class to be correct.
@RegDwightѬſ道 You did the right thing, that's all that counts.
@KitFox Hey, is correct used to mean upperclass in America too?
@RegDwightѬſ道 Shall I mention again that I enjoy the thought of your physical prowess?
Does that make you feel better?
@Cerberus I don't know. I guess so.
Proper, maybe.
15:13
Oh, I thought that was what you meant.
As in "comme il faut".
By the way, Bing Maps is actually quite OK.
@Gigi: How did it go??
Better or worse than expected?
> YOU JUST DONT LIKE WHAT THE WORD REFERES TO SOME SCHOLAR YOU ARE
As soon as the caps-lock key goes down, the troll is visible for all to see.
Beautiful.
Wow, that's pretty.
Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Including Niagara Falls, no doubt.
Ding!
15:21
Is that Bing maps?
Hey, I can see my house from here
I know!
@KitFox Yes.
Toronto is pretty prominent, eh?
New York City?
Yup.
I may like it better than Google Maps.
It seems to work more smoothly.
Sorry, I knew it, but you don't know the context...
15:23
Only the kinetic scroll is annoying.
@KitFox Huh what?
So that's what I was thinking when I saw the map.
@Cerberus It had better. Otherwise it couldn't compete at all.
@KitFox I always wondered if there could even BE any sizable food-manufacturing IN new york city. Seems like the worst place to put it.
@KitFox I suppose that sauce culturally dwarfs the Statue of Liberty and all that shit.
@Robusto What do you mean?
They darkened the shelf in the images. It confuses me. I bet I would have a much harder time recognizing those maps.
15:28
@Cerberus I just mean that Google is the market leader and the default map solution for most people. So unless Microsoft can come up with a genuinely better product, they won't be able to compete. So far I like what I see. It is very smooth.
@KitFox Yeah the seas are much worse.
I like the bird's-eye view a lot.
I can ACTUALLY see my house
It's an old picture though.
From 2010 or earlier.
probably 2009
@Robusto I wonder if they are using ArcServer.
@Robusto Yeah, agreed. MS wins at zooming, and the zoomed-out maps look better, at least the land areas. But Google's seas win (although I would like an option to just display actual photos for water), and it seems to have more zoom levels.
The question is, are the Bing maps enough improved to make users switch their default behavior. I am not sure that they are.
15:32
Wow. Much better than the satellite photos on Google Maps.
Also a freakishly recent picture of my house.
@KitFox check again in three years.
Google has streetview of my house though, and Bing doesn't.
I can see my house too!
Bing doesn't have my house on Streetview either.
Nor mine.
Its streetview is clearly behind.
But the satellite photos!
I had no idea.
Toronto's 3D rendering is maybe the coolest thing ever.
Or does Google have that too?
Nope.
15:36
Google has it's Google Earth thingy
Hello
Perhaps with this Earth plug-in?
Jinx!
I have question about my question english.stackexchange.com/questions/58306/… :)
Have you tried it? I'm too lazy to install any more Google things.
15:37
Hi!
For my city, Bing's satellite photos show buildings that were demolished three or four years ago.
I don't know which one is correct.
"while he works" or "while he working" or "while he is working"
@Anonymous "while he working" is incorrect. The other two are correct depending on the circumstances
I am not sure all of them are correct but depend on context.
Hey @Kit, MrShinyandNew is at it again. Get more coffee.
15:39
He always drinks coffee while he works. <- is this correct usage?
@RegDwightѬſ道 wow I'm really slipping today
@Anonymous yes
Thank you teacher :)
@RegDwightѬſ道 Google Streetview is several years behind in Amsterdam too.
Anyhow. As MrShiny points out, twas Google who invented the whole 3D thing.
You only see the world in three dee courtesy of Google.
Yeah.
And Streetview. And Maps. And their search engine. But MS is kind of catching up!
Which is very good.
15:42
Well, what else would you expect them to do? Not catch up?
They tried that for years and years!
@RegDwightѬſ道 Well they don't always catch up
They were very good at it.
Also read Joel's blog post on the future of the Windows API.
Like, in the mobile market. They've never really caught up there.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 my point is that that is not a reason to just go ahead and lower our expectations. And celebrate every time they don't majestically fck up.
15:43
@Cerberus please give me that link, I am interested about Windows API.
Wow, Bing Maps is really much faster zooming in and out with labels! Remarkable difference.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Careful what you're saying, I'm on Windows Mobile 6.0!!
@RegDwightѬſ道 I think maybe you're overstating things. Oh wait, you never do that.
Thank you @RegDwight
15:45
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I never, ever, overstate things, ever at all, not once in my lifetime, ever.
Windows Mobile sucks so much I'm even using a 3rd-party dialler application.
@Cerberus I don't think it's a spoiler to tell you that Windows lost the phone OS war. I know you haven't seen the whole movie yet, but the statute of limitations has passed.
The writing was on the wall when Microsoft's embedded Windows was called "wince".
I'll take WinCE over WinME anytime. On a second thought, I won't.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Lies! Windows Mobile will conquer the world very soon, mark my words!
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Haha, yes.
@RegDwightѬſ道 Difficult choice.
@Cerberus Exactly. WinME and WinCE never got any traction precisely because people couldn't decide which (not) to choose.
15:49
I thought they had the power not to gain traction each on its own?
Although WM was actually quite successful for a while.
I think Microsoft completely underestimated the appeal of Linux in the embedded space. I don't think they're SO incapable of making a decent embedded OS that they simply couldn't compete at all, but rather they were blind-sided with the portability of Linux and the free-software nature.
Not sure about market share, but many people used the Tytn II four years ago.
@Cerberus Windows ME? successful? No. It was not.
No, Windows Mobile.
Ah.
Yeah it had a small measure of success but too little, too late.
Maybe Windows 8 will change things.
15:52
I just think Apple and Blackberry caught up too quickly while MS did nothing.
It took them over a decade to bring Windows to Nokia phones. Funnily enough, it took Nokia approximately the same amount of time to not matter anymore.
WM was technically ahead.
Nokia still has a significant user base, doesn't it?
@Cerberus only in cheap phones, and shrinking
They lost huge chunks of ground, but still.
Hello everyone.
15:53
Samsung and Apple have cornered the smartphone market with Android and iOS
Yeah OK, but, if they came up with some good phones with a good OS, they would immediately be a major party.
Nokia could just use Android.
@Cerberus only if that OS was Android.
Aren't they doing that anyway?
Jinx.
Hi Bob.
At this point Nokia is best off going back to producing wellington boots.
My uncle was one of the thousands of people laid off from Nokia.
15:55
Nokia bet too much on a linux strategy that wasn't consumer-friendly enough.
And wasn't developer-friendly enough.
And meanwhile Google redefined what "linux phone" means
2 days ago, by RegDwight Ѭſ道
I just got an email from Sony Ericsson that they are being taken over by Sony.
And Google schooled everyone in how to make a phone platform. And Apple schooled everyone in setting expectations.
@RegDwightѬſ道 Sony could have been awesome but instead they're mediocre.
At least everybody seems to have forgotten the DRM massacre.
@RegDwightѬſ道 Haha what?
You can't tell me that Sony didn't have the know-how to produce the iPhone in 2005 or earlier. They had the Clie division, the personal music division, the phone division, it could have been awesome.
15:57
What massacre?
A shitstorm in a teapot.
Instead they installed rootkits on all their customers' computers, then sold a game machine which they progressively removed features from.
@Cerberus you didn't hear about this?
Sony CDs came with rootkits on them that took over your computer in order to prevent you from ripping the CD
Oh, yes.
15:58
It was one of the most fucking stupid things they could have done
Well I'll leave it to MrShiny to explain, because I gotta catch that bus. Laters honies.
I think I have read about that.
As a consequence I will no longer buy any Sony products
Bye!
You could just clone your disk...
Then no more Sony virusae's.
Yeah, until I put the CD in again?
OR, I could tell Sony to f-off
16:01
Or you could rip the hell out of it.
So it doesn't matter if they make a kick-ass phone, or PC, or tablet, or stereo, or TV, I won't buy it
Some of their products are nice, but they won't get my money again.
feels bad for liking Skyrim so much
Maybe Apple would do it too.
well, I don't buy Apple either
and for just purchasing Sony licensed products for her son's birthday
16:02
Nor I.
I do.
Oops sorry.
Ei mitään.
I hope we haven't insulted your fruits.
Nah.
I've become wont to take a bit of flack for liking Apple stuff so much.
16:05
Hehe.
@KitFox Do you have Skyrim for PS3?
It's OK.
We will not judge.
@Mahnax Yes.
Oh, I'll judge.
@KitFox Gasp!
I am shocked.
16:06
Your PS3 props up a corrupt empire!
@KitFox I have a PS3 too.
I own a PS2 and a PS3.
I didn't buy ours though, I had no part in its purchase.
@KitFox Well that's ok, they weren't so obviously evil in the days of the PS2
Look, they're talking like brainwashed robots already.
16:07
The PS2 had some great games.
You can't play Ratchet and Clank on anything else! I'm sorry!
I love Ratchet and Clank!
The only ethical thing to do is not play. It's in the Koran, or something.
No! No! That's impossible!
@RegDwightѬſ道 That's pretty dated.
16:09
Perhaps apply a splash of holy water to the satanic machine first?
That should quench its evil spirits.
I can't stand the thought of switching to XBox.
Oh wait, I forgot, nobody should ever talk about the Koran. Because once you tell someone what's inside, if they don't believe it, they burn in hell forever. I know this because it's in the Koran.
But I probably should, so I can make games for my son.
@KitFox Ah, the irony of Microsoft being the "more ethical" choice :)
Xboxes are evil.
16:10
It hurts. It burns us.
Not because they are Microsoft, but because they don't work properly
Maybe I could just get a joystick for the computer.
@Mahnax Also fun.
...or use the shockwave controller...
scribbles notes furiously
@Robusto I play them at friend's places, but they're only fun when they work.
16:11
@Mahnax I play them at my place, and they always work.
@Robusto gasp Devilry.
My friend's Xbox eats his discs.
I think I ought to be able to pick up the PS3 controller signal, eh? What do you think? Bluetooth device?
You can connect a PS3 controller to a Mac via bluetooth.
So it is bluetooth.
Which means I could hook up the PS3 controller to my PC games, and map the controls, and pipe the graphics to my TV. Yes, yes. It would be just like having a pretty little console.
Maybe.
Well, I know that my friend got a PS2 emulator, and used his PS3 controller to play on his Mac.
16:15
Hey, speaking of XBox, in playing Fallout.3 the disc gets reported as "unreadable" if I turn the console on with the disk inside, but if I then open and close the tray it works fine. Any thoughts on that? This is the only game this has ever happened with.
Well, I'm outta here for now. Bye!
yeah I have to go too. cya
Ugh. Project lead is in my office right now.
"What's the time frame for this thing we've never talked about doing before?"
"Well, how long do you think it would take to do something like this?"
"But if we were going to pull data, how long would that take?"
"Well, if you were going to write a query to get the information I need so I can put it into SPSS?"
He narrowed it down further and further, until I could see that clearly he thinks that I am dragging my feet because all I'd have to do is write a query.
And my replies were consistently "Without discussing what you need in greater detail, I couldn't tell you how long."
16:32
@KitFox Ask him how much a house costs.
@Reg Should I fight Safety or stick with Ur Mother?
@Robusto Oh, good plan.
Or a car.
He is so condescending. He really thinks it takes as long as it takes to just literally write the query.
"Well, see, I'm going to Atlanta in two weeks to talk to them about this stuff." And? How is that my problem? Maybe he should've paid attention before now.
You could give him a range: "between ten and fifty days, probably, depending on what you want exactly".
It will take me at least a week to schedule a meeting with you in which you will attempt to describe to me what exactly you want.
You will realize in this meeting that you don't know exactly, but you will expect me to do it anyway.
That's the spirit.
Then it will take two more weeks to schedule another meeting where I will tell you I am not done yet, and you can tell me that you have figured out that you want something completely different from what you said you wanted.
16:46
Or you could just call the looney bin to come and pick him up for good.
Please follow the kind man into the white van.
@Cerberus has it completed?
17:04
Why is this still open

Q: Origin of "We didn't start the fire"

Alexei Averchenko"We didn't start the fire, it was always burning since the world's been turning" is from a song by Billy Joel, but I vaguely remember Malcom X saying it in one of his speeches that I heard on YouTube. Is this an old phrase? Where had it originated?

Nuke from orbit.

Q: A single word for exchange of gifts?

AyushmaanIs there any single word for exchange of gifts ?

And this one.
17:35
@Cerberus: Better thank expected. =)
I won't know the results until about May.
Better than*

eats M&Ms
feels happy
@KitFox Hi!
Hi!
I'm installing service packs!
Oh another new fox again? I like it!
Thanks. I think it is too small.
I'm eating leftover work party veggies with tzatziki!
17:54
But I thought I'd try it for a bit and see if it grew on me.
@aediaλ Yum!
Everyone at work is always like blah blah blah we want to eat healthy and then the only thing left a couple days after the party will be the fruit or veggie tray looking sad in the fridge. The chips are gone gone gone.
Moar broccoli for me though!

Q: Food or Foods - Spelling & Meaning

Matt_KI've been looking around the Internet. Some websites says that Foods is incorrect but other says it is correct.

Gen ref?
Hey, sweet! I can listen to my husband testify today!
18:22
Augh. I haven't gotten my son the toy Gramma was going to give him yet. Now I'm not sure if I can find it.
Is that your new name, kit?
8 minute later....
Oh. Hello.
You didn't ping me, so I didn't see.
Yes. My new name.
oh. heheh.
I heard your eldest son is turning 4 soon.
Congrats.
I'm trying to figure out what to do about a race car set for my son for his birthday.
race car set?
what kind?
perhaps I could help.
18:33
I don't know what kind. That's the problem.
Ah. what kind to buy for your son?
I was going to do GeoTrax because he's got bunches of track for it.
GeoTrax... hmm.
But I think he really wants to be able to race cars, not just have an RC train or car.
Egh, looks too complicated.
Did you son give you any hints on what he wanted?
18:35
Well, he thinks he wants the GeoTrax Cars RC set.
He wants to race?
You sure that he is not related to me in any way?
Hahaha. It's very common in boys.
I wanted to drive when I was 3.
Hmm.
I think he thinks he'll be able to race cars with the GeoTrax set.
I think that's why he wants it.
Being a parent is terrifically difficult sometimes.
18:36
Because if I don't give him the Cars set, he won't understand why I didn't give him what he wanted.
But if I do give him the Cars set, he will be disappointed that it is not what he thinks it is.
So ideally, I'd figure out a way to make the Cars set work the way he wants it to.
And that is likely to be expensive.
So, he wants to drive, physically?
Like control the car?
steering wheels and all?
@Kit?
Well, he'll settle for a regular controller style thingy. A stick or buttons should suffice.
Ah.
There is some little battery charged RC cars. Search Amazon.
Maybe eBay...
I don't trust eBay.
That will help.
Search for something your kid might like.
@Kit.
18:44
Nah. I don't think it's RC that he wants. I think he specifically wants racing, like a race track.
I wonder if he is too young for slot cars.
Best of all, battery charged ones are cheap.
Huh.
I had this Lightining McQueen track once.
The track had wheels on the side of it.
When battery was inserted, the wheels would turn, physically pushing cars as it went by.
@Kit.
Really?
Weird.
Yeah.
If I can find it on Amazon...
Well, this one was not what I had in mind...
@Kit but it might be what you are looking for.
Kind of looks like the one I had when I was a kid.
Oh wait,
Customers are not recommending it.
Hmm. Well race tracks like these are generally not recommended, perhaps because of faulty issues and age.
@Kit try searching for this at Retails.
@Kit or Perhaps your son might be interested in one of those Hot Wheels track?
18:53
@Kit When we were little, my brother had a car racing toy with a steering wheel, that was a sort of a videogame. I don't remember if it had any other buttons other than something to start it, but it had a windshield with a little screen, and you could turn the wheel to steer and pass the other cars, and you would lose the race and start over if you crashed, or else after what seemed like ages of racing (probably about 3 minutes or something) you could win the race.
I played the videogame part at least as much as he did. He played with it more, I think, with the game off, just for imaginary play.
Yeah. Well, now we have video games...
Right but do any of them have steering wheels?
And I am thinking specifically race track. I think slot cars are probably too old for him. I am trying to get over that.
Maybe it's time for Mario Kart? (I forgot it had a K.)
@aediaλ Yes, Mario Kart has a steering wheel adapter.
He is very good at Mario Kart.
And I would rather have a floor toy than another video toy.
18:56
Hmm.
He is probably too young for a proper train set too.
We had a hot wheels thing just powered by gravity.
It was awesome, though.
I remember building tall things with the wooden blocks just to try to get the perfect hill. Oh, and it was set up with two tracks, like a race.
He is probably too young for a proper train set too.
Yes, yes. Hot Wheels tracks. It is a good thought. I thought for that for Christmas, but there is no RC component. I am torn.
