18:00
It is 10 minutes remain
user19161
I will now take the test on my desktop.
@WillHunting Windows 7? I'd guess it'll not change the result that much.
user19161
This one is FF10, Ubuntu 11.10, AMD Turion 64.
My Mac is running a dual-quad-core Xeon at 2.8GHz, with 16GB 800MHz DDR RAM, which is so not at all competitive these days.
DDR? Wow.
user19161
18:02
@Gigili Nope I don't run Windows at all now. Only Linux all the time.
He must mean DDR3?
26 mins ago, by Will Hunting
@Robusto FF10, Ubuntu 11.10, Intel core 2 duo processor.
@Cerberus yeah, most likely, unless he's overclocked a DDR2 rig

Sad panda!
user19161
18:04
My desktop is even slower!
@Vitaly No. DDR2. Sorry.
Typing too fast.
Ah, OK.
user19161
Maybe I will install GNOME shell and see if that makes any difference.
You know, I'd be curious to know how "random" the card distributions in WMT are. They don't feel all that random to me. For instance, whenever I'm facing LtW I seem to see Hunter come up first way more than 10% of the time. Probably a confirmation bias in operation here, but damn.
well, I guess that means someone else is seeing it way less than 10%
user19161
18:09
I will now log out, log into GNOME shell instead if Unity, and see if there is an improvement.
user19161
I will then announce the results to the world.
@Anonymous I am listening to you now!
Your teacher is obviously a native speaker from America (or possibly Canada? Rob will be able to tell, I bet).
@Cerberus Tell what?
He is making you pronounce ch the right way.
@Robusto Tell whether that guy is Canadian or not.
The teacher in the sound file of Anonymous's lesson.

Conclusion: faster using GNOME shell
@Cerberus Could be Canadian. But could be American from one of the northern states like Minnesota or North Dakota.
both of them teach me about pronunciation.
@Robusto OK, is it that hard to hear for Americans?
I suppose your country is big.
18:14
@WillHunting aye - since you're running almost half the speed and half the cores as me, I'd expect your results to be slower
later link is a teacher who teach me by phonics.
@Cerberus Is what hard to hear?
@Robusto To hear whether someone's accent is American or Canadian.
All of my teacher is American :)
* All of my teachers are American.
user19161
@Anonymous Listening to this one now.
18:16
The rising intonation on stressed words and sentence endings is characteristic of a Canadian accent, but the northern states that border Canada have some of the same speech patterns.
@Anonymous You can edit your previous line by pressing the Up key if your typing box is empty.
@Cerberus Thank you
@Robusto is he speak generic American or not?
3 mins ago, by Robusto
@Cerberus Could be Canadian. But could be American from one of the northern states like Minnesota or North Dakota.
> His favourite food was chocolate cheese.
I don't know the difference between American and Canadian accent, I thought he speaks with American accent :)
@Anonymous I find it very hard to hear the difference in some cases, completely impossible in others.
18:20
I would put the guy in Canada or rural northern U.S.
Rural, even?
The woman sounds more southern to me.
But I find it hard to locate American accents beyond the most obvious differences.
user19161
@anonymous Which teacher do you like better?
Listen to the way he says "It's somethin' ya can do your self ..."
That's a rising intonation on stressed words. (Italics indicating stresses.)
Oooh that sounds northern and rural.
More so than the teacher, at least to my untrained ears.
@Cerberus Yes. This guy's accent is very broad, because he's doing it for comedic effect.
user19161
18:23
Maybe I should do a voice recording too and you can hear me speak!
@Robusto Right.
@Anonymous That woman is almost certainly American.
I like both of them :)
They both sounds nice.
They are both correcting you as is appropriate for your level, probably.
If they are good so I will continue to learn with them, not look for more expensive teacher :)
18:30
Back in a minute.
I notice that the guy focuses more on the specific subject of the lesson, like ch, while the woman also takes the opportunity to correct many other consonants and vowels.
There is nothing wrong with either method.
i'm almost certain there's a cognitive bias of sorts that makes people think expensive means better
@Vitaly D'oh!
and by “there's” i mean it's described on Wikipedia
"How much is that coat?" — "It's € 800, Miss." — "Only 800? My friend Betsy bought her coat here for € 1000." — "Well, we have the same coat in grey as well, which costs € 1,100." — "Oh, yes, I like that one better!"
@Anonymous Well, we haven't heard a recording of this expensive teacher!
18:36
@Vitaly In the absence of other information, price is the only benchmark people understand. In other words, ignorance is a highly desirable trait in an advertiser's target market.
speaking of cognitive biases and delusions, @Cerberus @Robusto do you have a fireplace?
@Vitaly If only!
Why?
I have a fireplace.
there's a new blog post by Sam Harris, The Fireplace Delusion
Hmm.
@Vitaly Is that The End of Faith Sam Harris?
18:37
@Robusto yes, one of the Four Horsemen
@Vitaly Ah! Well, I am immediately won over. In fact, I have long suspected this to be so.
I've never tried too fool myself that the fireplace was healthy or "natural" ... but a wood fire is pretty and comforting. And, anyway, the fireplace came with the house. I haven't used it in years. The fact is, having a wood fire is just too much trouble, and doesn't really provide any heat because the fire just sucks in cold air to feed itself.
Wood smoke feels bad.
My parents use it all the time.
And religion is comforting for some. :P
18:41
I will print this and give it to my father.
I often walk away coughing.
@Cerberus I disagree. I like the smell of a wood fire, and understand fully that breathing the smoke and its byproducts is not good for me. That's the difference between a wood fire and religion: religion smells, tastes, and feels bad, and offers no comfort. Given a choice between religion and a wood fire, I will take a wood fire every time.
Eh...I meant it feels unhealthy. That's not something you can disagree about; it is a sensation.
So you are a Fireplacian.
Who is?
Rob?
@Vitaly Me? No. I don't believe the wood fires I've been exposed to have shortened my life, but I do understand the risks.
18:43
> Children who live in homes with active fireplaces or woodstoves, or in areas where wood burning is common, suffer a higher incidence of asthma, cough, bronchitis, nocturnal awakening, and compromised lung function. Among adults, wood burning is associated with more-frequent emergency room visits and hospital admissions for respiratory illness, along with increased mortality from heart attacks.
> The inhalation of wood smoke, even at relatively low levels, alters pulmonary immune function, leading to a greater susceptibility to colds, flus, and other respiratory infections. All these effects are borne disproportionately by children and the elderly.
It's all about risk vs. reward. The reward of a wood fire is very slight.
I would really like to know the figures: how much does this chance increase? What is its base value? ^
The reward of religion is, for me, nonexistent.
Driving on the highway is also a question of risk vs. reward.
> ...and the persistence of this habit is a major source of air pollution in cities throughout the world. In fact, wood smoke often contributes more harmful particulates to urban air than any other source.
Is this really true?
Then how come noöne knows this?
@Cerberus Certainly not in American cities.
18:45
Yeah, they probably mean poor countries.
Hardly anyone burns wood in cities here.
@Cerberus Are you serious?..
People burn a lot of things other than wood. In Ireland they burn peat bricks in little space heaters even in business offices.
@Vitaly Stop it. I'm depressed enough about my country's embrace of unreason as it is.
@Vitaly Yes, well, it probably doesn't apply to Western cities.
@Robusto i'm just trying to reply to the pooch's “noone knows this”
Because I know absolutely noöne here who ever burns wood in the city.
It is done only in the country.
Besides, the articles switched from "wood" to "solid fuel": I know coals were a major source of pollution in Western cities when it was still used.
@Vitaly Perhaps you'd like to elaborate. And please read my comments above.
18:50
@Vitaly I am not entirely convinced that Sam Harris is completely objective, by the way, although he is right about many things. I was not certain, after reading The End of Faith, what his position on the use of torture in the present day really is. And there are a few arguments he makes that sound more like special pleading. But on the whole I agree with him, and despair.
Now I have to go eat something that I know is not good for me. Yum!
> ... you should agree that the recreational burning of wood is unethical and should be illegal, especially in urban areas.
People already rarely burn wood here in urban areas.
user19161
@Cerberus sound
@Cerberus well, firstly, his post is probably aimed at American readership, so you'd want to substitute “shopping mall” for “city” while reading it. secondly, your average person wouldn't even bother to find out whether being religious makes sense, how do you expect them to know whether wood burning is dangerous or not?
user19161
@Anonymous "If" should be used with "then" and not "so".
@Robusto mahlzeit
18:53
@Vitaly Haha, shopping mall...I don't think people on Manhattan burn a lot of wood.
@Vitaly The government should know if it is a major source of air pollution.
@Cerberus the goverment is religious ;)
One question I'd like answered is: how much does it increase your chances of getting cancer, etc., if you light your fireplace twice a month or so, with a good chimney? I'm sure it's not healthy: but how unhealthy exactly?
@Vitaly Eh well, that may be so in America.
user19161
@Cerberus What? Cancer? How?
Nobody uses a fireplace all year every day.
about 12 unhealthy
18:56
@WillHunting Smoke particles enter your lungs and bloodstream. Read the article.
@MattЭллен I'd seriously like to know.
user19161
@Cerberus Then many people here would get cancer from burning papers during various religious festivals.
user19161
@MattЭллен unhealthy
user19161
And I probably would get cancer too from inhaling all the particles.
@Cerberus Me too. The article only references one source
Especially compared to going to a bar or party twice a month where people smoke, and the every-day gases from cars we breathe in.
18:58
@WillHunting that should be added to What's The Harm?
@MattЭллен Yeah, and it doesn't compare the things I'd like to see compared.
Otherwise it is a good article.
But Vit finds it hard to accept praise.
user19161
@Vitaly And seriously the amount that is burned during these festivals is way greater than chimney fire.
@WillHunting Perhaps paper is less harmful, perhaps those festivals are less frequent, and perhaps they are in the open air?
user19161
The Ghost Festival, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival and holiday celebrated by Chinese in many countries. In the Chinese calendar (a lunisolar calendar), the Ghost Festival is on the 15th night of the seventh lunar month (14th in southern China). In Chinese tradition, the fifteenth day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar is called Ghost Day and the seventh month in general is regarded as the Ghost Month (), in which ghosts and spirits, including those of the deceased ancestors, come out from the lower realm. Distinct from both the Qingm...
user19161
This is the one which gives the most smoke, there are others.
19:03
> One study found it to be 30 times more potent a carcinogen
user19161
Maybe Cerberus will come out from Hades during the Ghost Festival.
I'd like to know how they have compared the two. I'd like to see a comparison of, say, smoking one cigarette and sitting in a room with a well-ventilated fireplace for an hour.
I think I will read that quoted study.
> access for 24 hours for US $43.00
I don't want to read it that much. I don't even like fireplace fires, they make me all sneezy
user19161
@MattЭллен That is daylight robbery.
19:11
i don't even see a link to download the PDF?
@Vitaly you have to click one more time
in any case, it's freely available: uvm.edu/~susagctr/Documents/Woodsmoke.pdf (may Google Scholar help you next time)
on the "informa access full text" logo
> Organic extracts of ambient particulate matter (PM) containing substantial quantities of woodsmoke are 30-fold more potent than extracts of cigarette smoke condensate in a mouse skin tumor induction assay (Cupitt et al., 1994), and are mutagenic in the Salmonella typhimurium microsuspension and plate incorporation assays (Claxton et al., 2001).
So, another paper. Meh. CBA.
@Vitaly thanks!
it seems a few centimetres of snow has fallen while we were chatting!
19:20
You too!
@Vitaly Hmm is that all they have tested?
By the way, have you been able to find the CGEL anywhere yet?
I haven't.
user19161
@MattЭллен I ordered the snow to fall for you.
user19161
@Cerberus Carter and McCarthy?
Cambridge Grammar of the English Language.
@WillHunting oh, well can you order things to warm up, so I'm not so cold kthx ;)
@Cerberus Nope. Speaking of it, the tome is so unwieldy I had to stuff it into a plastic bug to protect it from dust: I really can't be bothered to use the almost-2000-page monster of a book anymore.
19:23
Alas.
Perhaps we should scan it ourselves. How long would that take...
user19161
@Cerberus I have Cambridge Grammar of English but not The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language!
Yeah, I know.
user19161
The former is by Carter and McCarthy, the latter by Huddleston and Pullum.
I thought I had it too, once.
user19161
But I think the former is good enough.
user19161
19:25
The latter is too expensive and too expansive.
@WillHunting depends on what you mean by “good enough”: english-jack.blogspot.com/2008/03/more-muddled-grammar.html
@Vitaly Oh, you bought it!
user19161
@Vitaly Yes I saw that negative review.
I do use the OLD in paper, which is 2000+ pages.
user19161
@Cerberus OLD?
19:27
Apr 23 '11 at 18:55, by Vitaly
my copy of CGEL didn't come with a cd
Then I forgot that you had it at all, obviously.
user19161
My copy of CGE came with a CD.
my copy of EGIU came with a CD
user19161
19:28
I have a copy of Matt and Cerb on the internet.
user19161
They can be found on ELU.
i ain't no copy!
@MattЭллен What?
@Cerberus English Grammar in Use
Ahh.
19:30
it's for mid level pineapples, rather than experts
user19161
I rather it not come with a CD. I had to pull it off the book which spoilt the cover.
Hehe.
What did you do to qualify as a pineapple?
user19161
I don't like price tags and CD covers sticking on books.
@Cerberus Oh, well, there was a time I thought of educating pineapples abroad
it has lots of exercises
user19161
@MattЭллен exercises
19:32
meh, my way is better
user19161
That is a terrible spelling error!
user19161
I am horrified!
you are a terrible spelling error!
@MattЭллен You should have come!
@MattЭллен if you ever decide to go for it, i happen to like The Grammar Book by Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman
19:33
@Cerberus yeah, a lot of me wishes I did
user19161
@Cerberus That has more than one meaning.
but instead my dad set me up with a job, and now I am a programmer, like I always said I wanted
Haha.
I'm not in that job anymore, mind you
a much better one I have now
user19161
@MattЭллен The one which I recommended for you.
19:36
@MattЭллен That goes for something.
user19161
But no need to thank me.
@WillHunting eh? uh I don't think so
@MattЭллен You have a much better one now? Or the old job was a much better one than the one you have now?
@Cerberus my current job is far better than the one I started out at
Ahh OK.
Very good.
19:37
aye
user19161
Wise.
@Cerberus :D I didn't exactly phrase that well, did I?
Oh, well.
user19161
I have just overtaken Colin Fine. Yay!
Fine, fine
user19161
19:38
His answers are pretty fine.
user19161
Mahnax said he wanted to do a blog post for ELU but he has not.
well, there still time. EL&U is going nowhere
user19161
Anyway the world is ending this year.
ha, no. not even, I would give odds of a trillion to one against the world ending
user19161
19:43
So @matt why do you think my javascript test was so slow? Ubuntu? Or internet?
slower than ours?
user19161
Yes, I am surprised.
because your processor is slower than ours
user19161
The hardware is pretty decent.
user19161
It's a 64-bit processor.
19:44
your desktop processor - what clock speed is it?
and how many cores does it have?
user19161
@MattЭллен I don't know: AMD Turion 64
@WillHunting you should be able to find out in some control panel or something. hmmm...
user19161
AMD Turion is the brand name AMD applies to its 64-bit low-power consumption (mobile) processors codenamed K8L. The Turion 64 and Turion 64 X2/Ultra processors compete with Intel's mobile processors, initially the Pentium M and the Intel Core and Intel Core 2 processors. Features Earlier Turion 64 processors are compatible with AMD's Socket 754. The newer "Richmond" models are designed for AMD's Socket S1. They are equipped with 512 or 1024 KiB of L2 cache, a 64-bit single channel on-die DDR-400 memory controller, and an 800 MHz HyperTransport bus. Battery saving features, like Power...
@WillHunting cat /proc/cpuinfo
user19161
@MattЭллен type this into terminal?
19:46
look at cpu MHz
@WillHunting yeah
user19161
@MattЭллен 800.000
@WillHunting hmmm, that seems quite low. maybe there is something else that needs checking...
hang on. I'll pull up my ubuntu VM and see what it says
no, that looks about right for me: 2568.381
user19161
@MattЭллен So it is my processor that is slower?
800 is for HyperTransport, i believe
@WillHunting it looks like it
19:50
any other values that are followed by MHz?
user19161
@MattЭллен Ah then good. At least I know it's not some hidden malware.
@WillHunting can you see what your bogomips is? (from the same readout)
user19161
@MattЭллен 1595.95
BogoMips (from "bogus" and MIPS) is an unscientific measurement of CPU speed made by the Linux kernel when it boots, to calibrate an internal busy-loop. An oft-quoted definition of the term is "the number of million times per second a processor can do absolutely nothing." BogoMips is a value that can be used to verify whether the processor in question is in the proper range of similar processors, i.e. BogoMips represents a processor's clock frequency as well as the potentially present CPU cache. It is not usable for performance comparison between different CPUs. History In 1993, Lars Wi...
mine is apparently 5136.76
MIPS is millions of instructions per second
user19161
I see my processor is indeed inferior. Very good!
user19161
19:53
I like using low-end technology.
well, it's not like you play games!
that's pretty much the major use for faster tech
that and science
user19161
Games are boring. I do more naughty things!
noughty? like counting zeros on the Rieman Zeta plane?
user19161
O Matt, you so funny!
user19161
@MattЭллен Riemann
19:55
yeah him!
user19161
Games are for kids only.
The Game of Life, also known simply as Life, is a cellular automaton devised by the British mathematician John Horton Conway in 1970. The "game" is a zero-player game, meaning that its evolution is determined by its initial state, requiring no further input. One interacts with the Game of Life by creating an initial configuration and observing how it evolves. Rules The universe of the Game of Life is an infinite two-dimensional orthogonal grid of square cells, each of which is in one of two possible states, alive or dead. Every cell interacts with its eight neighbours, which are the ...
then I'll be a kid forever
user19161
I am not a goat.
@Vitaly we had to write an implementation of that as an exercise at uni :)
19:58
who hadn't? :P
I like cellular automata. they're satisfying
@Vitaly all those who didn't do a CS related course :p
nothing can be more satisfying than creating a whole Life universe with a simple starting board even if it never gets to be executed—who knows if that by itself is enough to define the whole history of that universe, with all those creatures evolving and pointlessly dying and inventing gods in the struggle for life
… just like in our universe
indeed :D
20:25
right. well, that was wordy.
still, an effective piece of writing for those atheists who still don't realize what kind of world they live in
I wouldn't call it excellent. Rhetorical, sure, but excellent is stretching it. Sure, it is logical, but it could say the same in about half as many words and still be effective.
okay, fix'd
@Vitaly Wow, we beat Lightbringers by 3 points. Damn.
20:35
Oh yes! I was going to give that game a go...
And Chatzy is down.
@Robusto — Yeah, that was intense. I refilled at like 30 seconds left and fought 3 Fights on Auto and won all. Reg refilled at 1m left and lost 3 battles.
I came in at 4 mins left and won 2, surrendered 3, so on balance I helped.
It sucked because I tried first in Firefox 10 (first time with that release) and it fucked up my Flash player, so I had to quit mid-battle and go back to Safari.
@Robusto — Works fine for us.
Different browsers don't matter. Hmm.
20:52
Yeah, my browser cached the link to their us2 server. That's what I get for relying on history instead of making a link.

Bliss!
21:09
But who will shave them?
but what if you had a list of all lists that do not list themselves? Would it be on that list?
Hi again.
Hi
just couldn't keep away, eh?
21:34
Nope.
I took and shower and braved the snow again.
Have you set foot in it yet?
Or should it be on?
You don't like snow?
it should be both, just like the sea!
@Cerberus no, going outside is something I will save for tomorrow. I have to help a sick friend buy groceries
who likes snow other than children?
that looks cold and dangerous. there could be wolves out there
the picture was taken at −27 Celsius
21:38
frozen wolves are more deadly!
the snow gives an eerie brightness to the world
@Vitaly Noice! How high is that snow?
Are those treetops or bushes?
well, if you prever hot over cold … how 'bout this:
@MattЭллен Good luck tomorrow...
Ah, last summer's lovely smoke.
@Cerberus both
Height?
21:43
IDK
about 40 Celsius in the smokey picture
@Cerberus ta :) for why did you brave the snow?
Foraging.
@Vitaly only 40! practically freezing
Man needs food.
Ah. Yes he does
21:44
@Vitaly Perhaps it's time to move to a better place.
I also went foraging today, but before the snow
A prescient animal.
Or just up earlier than you ;)
A matutinal animal, then.
there were some kids playing on the frozen pond in the carpark, earlier. Can you guess what happen?
bah, stupid fingers
21:53
They fell through?
That is what happened
Sad. Or funny.
funny :) I didn't see it, I just heard the splash and saw the kid climbing out
so long as he didn't get pneumonia
Let's hope he didn't...
As long as there were other people around I'm sure he will be OK.
oh yeah, there were several kids
they must live around here
@Cerberus I do find it odd that I'm up in the mornings these days. I used to be such a night owl. I guess I'm getting old.
21:59
Yeah, in the weekend, that's sick, man!
