Oh, I see.
So there was no lesser-know software that was important to you and that you had to check whether it worked on Vista first?
I liked vista better than XP. XP was good, Vista was more or less better. I had no issues with UAC and I don't recall stuff not working (of course, my notebook was "designed for vista")
How about printers?
@Cerberus my printer is quite old and it works out of the box with Vista and 7, better than with its original software.
My father has had to buy a new printer because his old one didn't work on 7 (he came from XP).
that's surprising to me
04:02
I think your standards of old are different, hehe.
usually old hardware isn't an issue because vendors send drivers to microsoft
@Cerberus well, my printer is from 2000
or 2001? 2002? anyway, old, for a printer
Oh, that's pretty old. But this one was probably older.
Possibly of a generation similar to this one:
I can't think of any hardware I own, or have owned, which I cared about, not working on newer windows. Obviously, I've owned some old PCs which were too slow, etc. But aside from that, my hardware just worked.
It was a printer–fax.
I'm surprised that that kind of printer wouldn't work on 7. I'd be more inclined to think that it wouldn't work on the new PC (i.e. it uses a parallel port and the new PC doesn't have one)
04:05
No, I think it changed when my brother installed 7 on his old PC.
But I am not quite sure any more.
@Cerberus well, it's possible. It could be anything: maybe this particular printer never supported the standards for fax/printer combos, and relied on its custom software which didn't work on 7. However, that sort of thing is usually pretty well supported by MS. It's their bread and butter.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Haha, I sympathize.
Hah, yes. Well, I'm not saying Windows is to blame itself. You know my position and arguments.
yeah
anyway, it's getting late for me. I should be going.
cya later...
04:21
OK bye!
04:34
Hai!
How's things?
Good: we did some Canadian maps.
Aww, nice.
I shall look!
You'll probably know them.
04:36
Indeed.
That St. Lawrence River one was really easy.
Heh.
Not for poor Kit.
Aww, really?
And apparently you don't know the name of the island either?
Which island?
The island in the River.
Oh, you probably only saw the larger picture.
04:39
Oh, yeah.
I did a close-up of the island first.
I don't think I could have got that, it's pretty tough.
The bigger picture was a piece of cake for her.
@Mahnax But it's a huge island!
Probably as large as my entire country.
@Cerberus But nobody in western Canada gives a crap about it!
@Cerberus No way.
I think I will go grab some tea. Brb!
Wait, we're out. Darn.
@Mahnax Awww...
Out of tea!?
But...I mean...how can you...
04:43
:(
I'm the only one in the house who drinks it.
And now it's gone.
sniffles
Aww.
I could get hot chocolate, but I'm not in the mood. Maybe later.
@Mahnax Okay my country is about 2.5 times as large. Finally something that we are actually larger than.
@Mahnax Hmm that's good too. With actual cocoa powder?
@Cerberus Yeah, homemade hot chocolate.
Yay!
04:45
@Cerberus Good!
Do you use milk, or just hot water?
Half milk, half water.
Ah OK.
Yeah. And I add a drop or two of peppermint extract.
What happens if you use water and a bit of cold cream instead of milk?
@Mahnax Interesting. That would taste like After Eight?
04:46
Probably a similar effect, but we never have cream in the house.
@Cerberus Exactly. It's very good.
I have no school tomorrow! Yay!
Hmm OK. The thing is, I think it will be easier and quicker if you don't need to heat up milk.
Yeah, that would be better.
Then again, perhaps that isn't really an issue with a microwave.
@Mahnax Congrats!
@Cerberus merci.
I love days off.
Do you work today?
Your today, not mine.
I worked today, but it's night now, hehe.
And have to go in a minute, by the way.
Sleepy time and all.
04:50
Hmm? Oh! It's not even 10 PM here. I thought it was later. And that's cool, bai!
Oh, so we're 8 hours apart.
Funny.
Is that Canada's westernmost zone?

5 hours later…

Q: What is the past tense of ring?

YuleWhich of the following is correct? "Bob rang me" "Bob rung me" "I rang Bob" "I rung Bob"

user19161
I don't like the answer. Why is ring idiomatic? And no need to add did, one can just say rang.

Q: problem with lyrics

kobikWhat is the proper word? showed or show? Living in a dream. You're wearing makeup. Living in a sin. It’s time to wake up. It’s a case of liberation When you showed up in disguise Flashing eyes in your direction Now they caught you with their lies My partner and I having trouble decide. I...

Q: What is the opposite of numerous?

SoviutI expected the answer to be innumerous, but that seems to be "too many to count". There must be a negative to numerous that isn't simply "few".

user19161
GR or whatever.

woo! -17F here, without windchill. that's -27C

Q: Is there a name for the feeling "Damn, I already asked this question three years ago"?

ripper234I'll copy from Meta: I admit I'm sometimes too quick with the gun when firing away questions. Does the feeling "Damn, I just asked this now, and I see it's a dup of a question I asked three years ago" have a name? Preemptive word for the smart: "Lazy" is a good term for the asker, but not for ...

Why is this open with a bunch of answers?
Hi!
People! We need help! 800 behind!
Kill it.
13:24
@JSBᾶngs Good lord. Did you shiver through the night?
@RegDwightѬſ道 I'll be right there.
I'm at 32/3 on active, but I can't pull it off alone.
I'll give them a shot.
@RegDwightѬſ道 Fear decks? Or not so much?
A couple, actually. Pathrazers, no GSes.
13:26
> Do you want to try out the Cheat Engine toolbar?
What do you think!!
I'm running LtW.
OK.
Oh an Orbital Platform! How quaint!
Spent.
Me too.
@Kitḫ it's nice and toasty in the house
13:35
Why isn't JSB playing anyway?
@JSBᾶngs That's good. Did you get the day off of work?
@Kitḫ don't be ridiculous. i'm here at work now.
@JSBᾶngs Well, I was hoping.
if it were snowing i could stay home. or if it were closer to -30.
I can't remember the cutoff here. I think it's -30 too.
13:39
does it get that cold in maine?
Yeah.
i thought you were warmer by virtue of being nearer the sea
Well, the coastal regions tend to be warmer, but we get a lot of wind off the arctic shield.
That's from the other direction, so the ocean doesn't help much.
And neither does Canada. Thanks a lot, Canada!
I don't think anybody would be doing anything here at -27 C.
it's actually not that bad
13:41
Canada's kind of like the gap in your collar that the snow falls down.
if you're well dressed, it's not difficult to be outside
I think we had -21 once, at night. It was terrible.
But your face!
It's the insta-freeze of my nasal passages that I particularly dislike.
nods
And I wear glasses, so I can actually feel the heat being conducted away from my face at that temperature.
13:42
when i stepped outside this morning i took several deep breaths just to feel the wonderful brisk air
And on a bicycle you will just fall down and die.
I went winter camping once in -20F.
well, yeah. you'd never ride a bike in this weather.
I don't get why people have ever settled outside the south of France.
@Kitḫ really? yowza. i've never been winter camping.
13:43
@JSBᾶngs That is impossible here.
@JSBᾶngs I was on a search and rescue team when I was in high school. It was part of our training.
Okay, if you're hopping from home to car to work, it is doable.
@Kitḫ that sounds like fun, actually. though for now i'll stick with summer camping.
@Cerberus that's the way we live around here. no one goes outside in this weather.
Understandable.
@JSBᾶngs It was...empowering. I don't know if I would choose to do it now, but it was thrilling then.
And it illustrated the finer points of cold weather survival in ways that books just can't.
Like not letting your feet sweat.
13:46
And what is the secret to that?
Stay comfortably cool.
Wear two layers of socks.
i know from skiing that overdressing (and sweating under your clothes) can be as bad as underdressing
One cotton, inside out, and one wool.
@JSBᾶngs Yes, yes. Comfortably cool, we had that reamed into our heads. If you sweat, you're dead.
Obviously not if you are skiing though. Then you just go into the lodge.
but who wants to go into the lodge? you bought that lift ticket so you could stay on the slopes
If you say so. I've never been skiing.
That sounds wrong. Never gone skiing?
13:50
i haven't been for several years.
@Kitḫ both sound fine to me
OK thanks.
I started thinking about it too much.
@JSBᾶngs I suppose there aren't too many mountains where you are.
@Kitḫ i grew up in colorado where we have plenty of mountains. anyway, there is a ski resort on a large-ish hill about an hour from here. i've been there once. it's ok.
Hmm. How did this user manage to enter a null value in a date field when it won't let you do that?
@JSBᾶngs Colorado is a place where I must go. I've had friends and family there over the years, but never visited.
@Kitḫ where in Colorado?
@JSBᾶngs Let me think. My brother-in-law went to grad school there. Boulder, I think? And I had a group of friends who lived somewhere near Denver. And my best friend lived out there for a while with her husband, but I don't remember where.
I think maybe our first family road trip will have to be to the Southwest. I haven't seen any of it.
We were going to go through there by way of Colorado on our honeymoon, but we ran out of time.
13:57
that's so interesting. i've spent my entire life in the west. i've barely been east of the Mississippi
It's definitely different.
there's some great stuff in boulder
Markedly different across the Mississippi.
but if you're visiting colorado i think you'd want to do Rocky Mountain National Park instead
I'll keep that in mind.
13:58
i've been to Washington DC and Florida. that's it.
oh, and i had a layover once it atlanta, but that doesn't count
Wow. That's not much.
Florida doesn't look that much different than southern California.
Except flatter.
I like DC. I think it is very impressive.
oh, i guess i've also been to wisconsin and illinois, which are technically east of the mississippi. i may have driven through more of the midwest when i visited toronto, but i don't remember any of it
