In what dialects of English do they change 'st' to 'sht'? I noticed it while listening to Sanders's recent talk, when he said:
> The major point that I will be making to the citizens of the Dishtrict of Columbia is that I am shtrongly in favor of D.C. statehood.
(Note the inconsistency: dishtrict, shtrong, and yet statehood)
I think I had heard shtrong from a speaker of the cockney dialect before, but I didn't take it seriously back then.

@Færd: It only happens in "str."
It's caused by the "r," like how many people pronounce "truck" as "chruck," and "dream" as "jreem."

Q: Why is "str" sometimes pronounced as "shtr"?

slhck Possible Duplicate: Pronunciation of voiceless alveolar fricative /s/ as ʃ (/sh/) in slang? My understanding was that the cluster "str", for example in "stress", is usually pronounced /stɹɛs/, just like Wiktionary mentions. Their audio sample confirms this. However, I sometimes hear a...

Off topic question never closed and now it's attracted another answer.

Q: "Discover" or "invent" in mathematics context

Aleksandrs UlmeA very theoretical question I came across with friends some time ago. I am not a native English speaker, so I may be misunderstanding some details, but as I understand: 1) Discovery relates to a concept which existed prior to ... well "discovery" but was unknown before the act. 2) Invention rel...

I was on the fence about it.
@KitZ.Fox The question comes in the fourth paragraph: are mathematical concepts such as sinus "discovered" or "invented". This is a classic philosophy question, not a question about the meanings of the words.
Not that it isn't a fun question.
14:28
This is a folding video by an ASMR artist that I don't watch much:
This is so soothing that my sinuses are buzzing.
So @KitZ.Fox I had to scold your cousin the other day. She was trying to catch a cat in my backyard.
She'll do that. She likes cats.
yeah, and squirrels, and rabbits.
Especially rabbits.
There used to be a lot of rabbits around here.
14:34
licks chops
I made an new ASMR video yesterday.
14:51
@KitZ.Fox Awesome. I loved the medical research one.
Really?
I was going to do a follow up to that one.
I've been copping out and doing the easy stuff instead.
Origami and things.
Are you familiar with Girl Genius?
Yes, you already hooked me on her, years ago.
Oh. Good!
I read about six years worth in a week and then stopped reading because I was all caught up.
Hmm, but that would be a good roleplay.
14:53
Your character in that video would fit right in.
Not to mention the scenario.
@KitZ.Fox Do you actually watch those or leave it playing on a background tab? How important is the visual aspect?
@terdon I usually listen when I'm at work. Then voices and sounds are important -- that's probably self-explanatory. I do get tingles from watching hand movements, particularly folding and pointing gestures. It seems to be synergystic.
Strongest when I have both visual and auditory. Well, and taste -- if I suck on hard candy when I've got tingles, it just about makes my brain explode.
I get smell triggers too.
I don't know if it's unusual to have all modalities. Probably not.
Wow. Just wow. All it does for me is give me a mild headache. Nothing pleasurable though.
You lucky fox, you.
15:27
@terdon Folded towels are a nice side benefit though.
15:38
Oh, you're a subscriber, @MετάEd. So you must get notifications when I publish new stuff?
Yeah.
I'm totally going to spam your inbox now.
@KitZ.Fox You haven't seen my inbox.
user208178
Good day.
\o
@MετάEd 1337 unread emails?
15:46
@TIPS Sorry, I don't speak 1337.
Maybe your inbox does
@TIPS I think we're still pre-singularity.
We are?
Actually, I'm The Singularity. I haven't finished optimizing yet.
user208178
16:01
@KitZ.Fox wow she is good. very... soothing. also she is good at folding towels.
yeah, right? I love all the rustling noises.
user208178
and how is your ASMR video coming along?
Which?
user208178
@KitZ.Fox oh nothing. I thought you were making a new one.
user208178
I misread.
16:05
Oh, I made one yesterday. It's up already.
@MετάEd We're early late middle pre-singularity. Maybe that's just singularity-wannabe. Like learning chatbots talking to each other.
user208178
ah
I'm planning to do another soon.
user208178
nice
user208178
Hello @Mitch.
16:07
Hello @VitaminC
Don't forget vitamin B12. not enough C and your teeth fall out, but not enough B12 and you have dementia.
also all the other ones.
user208178
:)
but for different reasons
user208178
@Mitch Actually there is someone on the reddit with this username. Their name clicked in my mind after I read some of their posts a few months back. So while signing up here I just used this name off the top of my head.
user208178
I also like the username "exit50" for some reason.
user208178
Thought about using that one but then didn't.
16:35
Bacon pancakes, making bacon pancakes.
user208178
yummy
I wish I were making bacon pancakes.
@KitZ.Fox Will you be worshipped? I have pulpit experience.
@MετάEd I hadn't thought about it.
I suppose I could allow it, for the time being.
I also have a lot of background as devil's advocate.
16:42
Very good.
16:58
@MετάEd wait, you can't play both sides. You're either with him or agin him.
@Mitch The devil's advocate ensures that the devil is treated justly. Think of me as a court appointed defense lawyer.
@KitZ.Fox OK you lost me. You can have bacon with your pancakes, or you could have bacon bits sprinkled throughout the pancake batter, but I'm guessing you're thinking of pancakes made out of bacon? Are you mad?
@MετάEd He's guilty. Why bother.
Even if he's not guilty of that particular crime, he should be in jail anyway.
@KitZ.Fox That's a song. Not actual bacon pancakes. I'm sure you're aware of that now.
It has a recipe.
17:04
assembling ingredients
wait...how much sugar?
that video took a lot of work to produce
Also I lost a half hour of my life to the youtube rabbit hole after your starwars ASMR
user208178
what were you watching?
user208178
after watching the above video I also ended up browsing other videos.
@Mitch I'm flattered.
pretty topical
@KitZ.Fox did you script it or was it all of the top of your head?
17:13
The origami one? Off the top of my head.
Well, I mean. I knew how to fold it already.
well yeah, but the words
user208178
@Mitch nice, but how did dogs know who to use those high caliber guns?
@VitaminC They're American.
17:30
@Mitch Yes.
user208178
@KitZ.Fox Btw you do look a bit like Rebecca Chambers the Resident Evil character.
It's the pink neckband.
I couldn't manage to stay in character the whole time for that one.
user208178
Now there is Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield left heh.
Claire Redfield? I remember a Claire, but Chris Redfield. Was Claire his sister?
user208178
Yes his sister.
user208178
17:41
younger sister.
