I had a test, had to leave.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 You can't be that old.
@Stom You watch too much TV.
Hey, 'tis @JasperLoy!
user19161
@Mahnax Boo! My ninth post is up!
@Stom but have you seen them in person? Like, the pterosoaur, it's frickin' huge! It's the size of a small plane!
@JasperLoy Yay! I'll go read it now.
@Mahnax I was born in the 70s! Sad, but true
@MrShinyandNew安宇 My dad was born in the 60's. You're younger than somebody.
Hi @BarrieEngland!
@JasperLoy Deep.
user19161
16:03
@Mahnax Hey you finished so soon? It's quite long ya know?
user19161
17 people here now. We have not had such a huge crowd for long.
@Mahnax Yeah, I'm younger than my parents, and lots of people I know. Actually I was a the ROM with a couple and their daughter (and my daughter), and the wife was telling her daughter that "The dinosaurs are almost as old as Daddy!"
@JasperLoy Yeah, I read quickly.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Hahaha.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I was born before Jesus. Because I am 700⁴ years old.
Ergo I am older than you.
@Mahnax older than the universe, it seems
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yup.
16:12
must... not... snack... on... snickers... bar...
user19161
@MattЭллен No snacking in chat.
@JasperLoy good save!
@JasperLoy Hurrah for snack Nazis!
user19161
@MattЭллен No snacks but we can have nuts.
Not to be confused with real Nazis.
user19161
16:13
We are all nuts after all.
@JasperLoy This room is nuts.
user19161
@Mahnax Aye. You are nuts. I am nuts. We are one. (sounds creepy)
@JasperLoy No.
user19161
@Mahnax I see you used a Latin word.
You guys are nuts? The ServerFault main room regulars can be a bit loopy sometimes.
16:15
@JasperLoy My favourite.
@MattЭллен I have a Crunchie in the fridge. Yum!
@tombull89 You should have been here for CTFD day. Don't ask what it means, please....
@tombull89 I just have to survive 15 more minutes of temptation
user19161
@tombull89 Aye. And there are different kinds of nuts too. Some have nuts, some are funny nuts and some are real nuts.
Capture The Flag Day day?
16:17
@MattЭллен That's the one.
haha.
Or chuck toss fling DESTROY! day.
ears prick up
16:18
@Kitḫ That was yours!
@tombull89 I used to fix servers. Sometimes the air gets a little fume-y in there.
Still my favourite, btw.
Clear the Fumes Day
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I'm lucky, I don't work in my server room. We have a office. With windows and everything.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Riiiight. "Fumes". has vision of Mr. Shiny inhaling, then giggling
16:19
@Mahnax nuh-uh. Not in the server room!
I maybe have missed the meaning here.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Hahaha...
Only if they're his own fumes. I would not want to smell someone elses
Well, I was being literal, but Mahnax has, maybe, a vivid imagination.
user19161
@tombull89 an office, not a office
16:20
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Too vivid, perhaps.
I'm just joshing anyways.
user19161
@tombull89 Does your office have windows or Microsoft Windows? I guess both!
@JasperLoy -_-. both.
user19161
And they could have doors and MS-DOS.
@JasperLoy Here's another one: when I was fixing servers, the servers still ran Netware.
@tombull89 Oh, um. Lucky you.
16:21
@Mahnax Yeah. We're spoilt really.
@tombull89 I hate Windows. The OS.
@Mahnax Ah, the idealism of youth :)
@Mahnax Unfortunately if the school switched to Linux or Mac's the screams of pain from the teachers would be unbearable.
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 You're still young too.
@tombull89 It's true. I love my Mac. But Mac or Linux in school could never work.
16:24
@JasperLoy did you miss the previous conversation? Where it was established that I am old, and hang around with dinosaurs, both real and metaphorical?
user19161
@Mahnax It can if the world just stops to think. But will it?
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Speaking of age, I'm not actually 700⁴. I'm 701⁴....
@JasperLoy Does it ever?
user19161
@mahnax Did you see the three Little Gordon videos I posted here before?
@JasperLoy Hmm, no. Don't believe so.
user19161
user19161
16:27
user19161
What the..
Oh, god. Didn't the agency that came up with them get slated for that?
user19161
... f.
user19161
16:30
He is imitating Gordon Ramsay from Hell's Kitchen.
@MattЭллен Bye.
@JasperLoy I noticed.
user19161
Gordon James Ramsay, OBE (born 8 November 1966) is a Scottish chef, television personality and restaurateur. He has been awarded 13 Michelin stars. Ramsay is known for presenting TV programmes about competitive cookery and food, such as the British series Hell's Kitchen, The F Word, Ramsay's Best Restaurant, and Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, along with the American versions of Hell's Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, and MasterChef. Early life Gordon Ramsay was born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England from the age of 5. Ramsay is th...
Gordon Ramsay is amazing.
user19161
I've not eaten his food though.
@JasperLoy I would be honoured to do such a thing.
user19161
16:35
@Mahnax Do you spell it as honour in Canada?
user19161
I would have thought you followed the Americans.
@JasperLoy Yeah, we add the letter "u" to a bunch of words: favourite, colour, neighbour.
Favour, honour.
Labour.
user19161
@Mahnax Maybe French influence.
@JasperLoy Perhaps.
user19161
amour
16:38
@JasperLoy Niin.
user19161
I have a feeling Kit and Shiny are having lunch now.
Things in here slowed down a good deal.
@JasperLoy Probably. It is almost noon in NYC/Toronto.
user19161
@Mahnax I know you are in computer class.
@JasperLoy Yes.
Today was test day, after I was done, I got free time.
I'm not yet lunching
But I am working
Also, Canada's spelling is a mish-mash of british and american.
but we put in the U.
16:42
Canada is great.
@MrShiny is there any snow in Toronto right now?

Q: "Sound engineering"

AmumuWhat does "sound engineering" mean in this context: "Establishment and use of sound engineering principles to obtain economically software that is reliable and works on real machines efficiently. (Fritz Bauer)"? The definition above is for software engineering. However, the word "sound" used he...

@Mahnax not yet, we had snow but it melted. It's above zero today, and raining.
gen ref?
@MrShinyandNew安宇 We have an unusually small amount here, for some reason.
@Hugo Meh.
user19161
@Mahnax There was once I almost ended up with a Canadian girl but it did not work out. She came here for a semester on exchange. She ended up marrying a French guy who also came here for exchange.
16:46
@JasperLoy Aww. There are lots of Canadian girls in Canada...
Well, I have to go. Bye all.
@Jasper But if you're looking for a Chinese-Canadian, don't bother, in Canada, they all marry white guys. At least, it sure seems that way.
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 OK. Anyway that Canadian girl was Caucasian, and blond.
@JasperLoy I see. So far I haven't established any patterns for blondes. But, I think there tends to be a lot of competition here for them.
It's surprising to me, though, how many mixed-race couples I know. It's like someone passed a law requiring it, or something.
17:14
Waiting impatiently for you to close my question
@Gigili Why do you ask a question expecting it to be closed?

1 hour later…
18:55
Coffee, the finest delight
Morning.
user19161
@Cerberus Boo!
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Really? Hmm...I don't know many. Perhaps because there just isn't much racial variety here.
Boo!
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Clearly that failed detection.
@JasperLoy Conclusion? The fun's done.
@Cerberus I was at lunch the other day and every person at the table had an Asian wife, but only one guy was Chinese, the rest were Caucasian. And at my kids' daycares there are several mixed-race kids (besides my own, of course).
19:09
Canadian treacle feels disgusting.
My wife and I used to point out other couples that we saw that were mixed. But now it's faster to point out the unmixed ones.
@Kitḫ do you mean literal treacle? Is there a Canadian variety of it?
Well, I was just playing the game.
I dunno.
shoot... I totally missed that
Canadian Torontonian feels dumb.
user19161
I have never tasted truffles. I don't think I ever will. But if you have, what's the big deal?
They are lovely.
Smooth creamy dreaminess.
Like moonlight and flowers.
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Nice kitchen table!
@JasperLoy That was my counter-top, actually. But I don't live there anymore.
Also, I guess that recipe is a bit out of date, I usually leave out the egg yolk now.
user19161
I got a few free cans of abalone by luck recently. I must say they are delicious.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 That's funny...so how come there are so many Asians in your circles?
I like your bowls.
19:15
I have one Indonesian/Chinese friend.
@Cerberus Because I live in Toronto? :) Seriously I don't know
@Cerberus There are a lot of Asians in Toronto. Five Chinatowns.
user19161
@Cerberus I remember everyone at his work place married an Asian wife.
19:15
That is an informative trio of answers.
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I remember I told you there were mysterious forces at work a few months ago.
And the Steve guy that is not the Canadian Steve that I know.
So what % or Torontonians are Asian? And what % at university?
But in my workplace it's a small sample, so, pure luck that all the married developers are married to Chinese or Korean women.
@Cerberus I don't know.
Hmm.
Oh, I know two girls who have black boyfriends!
19:17
@Kitḫ which bowls? The white soup/salad bowls? Or the little green sauce dishes?
Or the flowery rice bowl
The little green sauce dishes. I like those the best.
@Cerberus I hear that this is a common phenomenon but I rarely see it. Actually I guess I don't know many black people? Odd, now that I think of it.
I can't really see the flowery rice bowl, but I bet I would like that too.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yeah I don't know many either.
The only ones I know are among the kids I tutor.
@Kitḫ Yeah I like those green bowls a lot. They are from a Japanese dish set, but I hardly ever use the other pieces because they aren't dishwasher safe.
19:20
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Gosh, I couldn't hear that last word you said. Suddenly I heard evil music in my head.
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 JSBangs said you can put a keyboard in a dishwasher a few weeks ago.
The demographics of Toronto make Toronto one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Data released by Statistics Canada as part of the 2006 census indicates that Toronto is more ethnically diverse than Miami, Los Angeles, and New York City. 49.9% of Toronto's population is foreign-born. A majority of Torontonians claim their origins from as either in whole or part from England, Scotland, Ireland and Italy. There is a significant population of Afghans, Arabs, Barbadians, Bengalis, Chinese, Colombians, Dutch, Ecuadorians, Filipinos, French, Germans, Greeks, Grenadians, Guyanese, Hung...
user19161
@Cerberus Say boo to the evil spirits!
I guess the census probably doesn't lie, but it seems to me that I see way more Chinese/Korean people than that. Must be my neighbourhood, I suppose.
19:24
Perhaps there are many second- or third-generation Asians?
They may not count for that statistic.
And perhaps those 8.5 % all work in jobs that require higher education?
@Cerberus That's the LANGUAGE stat
Yeah I know.
Is there a race stat? I didn't see one.
they account for over 11% by ethnicity
There are two big tables showing the breakdown for Toronto and for the Census Metropolitan Area
> The 2006 census indicates 46.9% of Toronto's population is composed of visible minorities; 1,162,630 non-Whites, or 23% of Canada's visible minority population, live in Toronto; of this, approximately 70% are of Asian ancestry.
@Cerberus But there "Asian" doesn't mean "CJK", which is how I was using it before.
19:26
That makes 33 % Asians in Toronto.
CJK?
What? No it doesn't.
Chinese, Japanese, Korean
user19161
@Cerberus Chinese Japanese Korean
user19161
Jinx.
Oh.
So...you were specifically thinking of CJK when you mentioned those couples?
19:27
Also, I find it annoying that Caucasian and Aboriginal are grouped together in those tables. Not the same race, after all.
@Cerberus yes
I also know a couple where the man is Indian (from India Indian, not North American Aboriginal) and she is Filipino-Chinese (which I count as "asian")
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Haha, that is silly.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Hmm...are those rare, South Asian with East Asian?
Anyway, I actually see lots of OTHER mixed-race couples, and mixed-culture (i.e. Muslim+non-muslim), etc, but I haven't done a survey or anything.
@Cerberus Compared to caucasian+east-asian, yes.
We have all kinds, but people don't mix easily.
19:30
@Cerberus They should. It's what builds tolerance and peace.
user19161
@Cerberus We need to liquefy them, then they will mix.
That is probably mostly because the non-Western-European groups are usually socio-economically in lower classes.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I think the minorities need to emancipate first, or it won't happen.
user19161
@Cerberus True, but love happens in mysterious ways.
@Cerberus yeah, that is a problem.
@JasperLoy Love won't happen without mixing. And Romeo+Juliette stories are fine, but actually they are a rarity, which is what makes the story interesting. Also it ends in tragedy, remember?
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Aye, tragedy is also the spice of life sometimes, other than comedy and variety.
19:34
Moroccans and Antillians (blacks) are the lowest here, then people from Surinam (originally from India and black Africa, mostly), Turks, Asians, and Slavic people, then whites. Very broadly speaking, of course; I think lower-class white is still a larger group than any of the minorities.
Turks are climbing pretty fast. Asians mostly live in their own isolated communities, but they are usually well educated.
We also have many Asian exchange students, but I think most go back sooner or later, so not that many couples.
user19161
One day the world will live as one. Until then we can only imagine.
user19161
Hm. Do you have problems with different, identifiable groups?
@JasperLoy I don't think this will meaningfully happen.
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Aye, you may say I'm a dreamer.
user19161
Now I can't get this aye bug out of me!
user19161
19:41
It's all Matt's fault!
coma, torpor, fatigue, delirium
2
I can't wake up today.
user19161
@aediaλ If you are dreaming, then I must be too, cos I'm talking to you now.
Combat the fire dragons!
smooch
runs away
I keep half-closing my eyes and seeing them.
@Kitḫ chases
19:45
can't talk; fighting dragons.
Haha!
Brilliant.
hides
user19161
When you see dragons, you first need to calm the f down.
looks in sack
shakes
cruel trepanation fractures domepiece
19:46
Cling to futile delusions!
user19161
I am surprised you people are still at CTFD. We need to calm the f down!
Damn it. My husband made it to Riften before me. Now I shall have to find something else.
Take the carriage!
user19161
courage to fight demons
Is there a big library somewhere, like in Morrowind?
19:48
You can visit the major hold cities by taking the horse carriage that waits at the stables.
Hmm, I haven't found one.
No!
But I have only been mostly to Whiterun, Riften and Markarth.
You don't discover cool stuff that your husband doesn't know about by taking carriages places!
Oh. Well, there's a pretty good library at the Bard's College in Solitude, but it doesn't have many skill books.
Carriages to find discoveries.
Have you found Nettlebane for the people in Whiterun?
The stuff you find on that is pretty cool.
19:50
@aediaλ oooh. no.
BRB. Going to Whiterun.
It's not a huge amount of plot he would miss or anything, but some beautiful locations.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Was that to me? What do you mean?
By the way, this is cool:
If you ever see a strange character and would like to know what it is.
Oh, hey, there's an easy to get shout just past the statute of Meridia way up north near Solitude.
Doesn't support Chinese characters yet.
@Kitḫ A shout you can learn that doesn't require clearing a whole dungeon first, you mean?
I only know a few shouts.
My husband keeps making fun of me because I do so many Misc quests.
19:53
@aediaλ Yep. It makes you strike faster (with unenchanted weapons).
OOOH
@aediaλ I've barely done any of the main quest. I like skipping through the forest collecting plants. Mainly because I am a girl, I think.
My husband says I just like rescuing people's kittens (note: have not actually rescued any kittens yet).
@Cerberus I mean, like in France there were riots in the (predominantly) muslim ghettos
But my character has also turned into a bit of a kleptomaniac.
19:55
Hehe. I am trying something new this time. Less sneak, more brute force.
I find I rather like bludgeoning bad guys with a huge hammer.
Very much not my usual nightblade style.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Oh, right. No, we have nothing that serious. The occasional small riot, and higher crime rates. I think we don't have ghettos as much as in Paris or London. Even the worst neighbourhoods are still not terrible.
Do you?
@Kitḫ I have a giant battleaxe in my back, er, pocket? but having to carry that and the heavy armor as well as thieving gear is putting a crimp in my ransacking.
Bag of Holding?
Crud, have to quit wolfing down food. Meetings again.
@Cerberus I use my companion for that, but you know, they're weaklings too it seems.
@Cerberus Not really. A few summers ago there was a spike in gun violence and it was mainly young black men killing other young black men. But I think that spike was just an anomaly, because the year after the crime went back down.
19:58
@Kitḫ Have fun!
@aediaλ Tie him to a tree before battle, then fetch him to carry the gems when it's over?
@aediaλ Cram the food down!
@MrShinyandNew安宇 OK, good. Is crime generally decreasing or increasing? It has decreased here for decades, but people refuse to check simple stats and keep complaining about stealing foreigners.
@Cerberus yeah, overall crime has gone down. But I think there's a fundamental law of conservation of whining, or something.
Indeed there is.
20:01
"Whining cannot be created or destroyed"
Hehe.
Or maybe "The more things improve, the more dumb-ass the whining becomes"
We all have a natural capacity for it. I just concentrate mine on incorrect use of Latin and Greek roots.
@Cerberus If only you could use those powers for Good!
Impossible!
The essence of whining is that one thinks one is a champion of the Good Cause, while in fact...
20:04
Dec 1 at 17:42, by Mr. Shiny and New 安宇
@aediaλ Cease thy futile diatribe!
Heh, well, if that is whining...

Q: What are the main accents of modern Russian among native speakers?

magnetarBefore I had heard any spoken, Russian was one of my favorite languages. I used to have fun just reading Russian dictionaries, and I thought I'd soon learn to speak it. But when I tried to find some recordings, I felt that what seemed to be the 'main' Russian accent was not to my taste. It stand...

> But when I tried to find some recordings, I felt that what seemed to be the 'main' Russian accent was not to my taste.
heheh what is THAT supposed to mean?
Now that is pretty funny.
I know!
It is like saying, "RP is not to my taste".
20:06
I mean, just speak it whatever way you want, I guess
But rejecting the "main" accent seems silly.
I don't want to learn "English". What I want to learn is three-generations-inbred-and-illiterate-haven't-seen-an-outsider-since-mom-staggered-in-lost-and-couldn't-leave-redneck english.
By the way, the Canadian accent is much like American, isn't it?
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yes, a very wise choice!
@Cerberus Sure. And you guys all speak German over there, right?
Hmm so it isn't?
I never hear people talk about it.
The "main" Canadian accent, I mean.
20:09
There are lots of regional accents.
So I assumed it was not very distinct.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yeah of course.
I think if you compare, say, national TV accents with American national TV accents they will be similar.
So, you could say that the "main" accent is similar.
whatever that means, for whatever it's worth :)
Okay, that's what I thought.
Suppose you heard part of a radio broadcast and you had no idea whether it was American or Canadian from the content: would it be easy for you to tell the difference, assuming both presenters had very unmarked "main" accents?
OMG I didn't know this had a name.
Someone linked me to this page.
user19161
20:51
Any of you going for new year countdown party?
Nope, family stuff for me. You?
@Cerberus I think I would be able to detect American radio broadcasts on a better-than-chance basis.
@JasperLoy yes, but it's a family party
user19161
@Cerberus Nope, never been to any. It's too crowded anyway. I once fell into the drain on New Year's eve.
@JasperLoy Look at the bright side: the new year has to start off better than that!
@MrShinyandNew安宇 OK. So it isn't extremely clear.
20:54
@Cerberus It really depends on the person though. Radio personalities are often chosen for generic accents.
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Hehe. Funny thing is a few days before that day I fell into another drain, so I got scars on both knees, not really noticeable now though.
@JasperLoy what kinds of drains are you talking about?
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Those just beside the paths for walking. There isn't really a barrier to prevent that. For draining rainwater.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yeah OK. But an Australian presenter would be quite different, wouldn't he?
@JasperLoy Picture?
It sounds weird.
user19161
Over here there are such drains and trees too everywhere.
20:56
I never fall into drains of any kind...
user19161
There are a few pics there, though I fell into the bigger kind.
Oh, wow!
We don't have those things at all.
We do have canals, which are far worse; so you should be glad you're not living here!
