00:00 - 19:0019:00 - 00:00

19:01
looks up from his work
where'd all these people come from?
@MattE.Эллен The internet
A dangerous place
Run while you still can
The Internet? That thing's still going? I thought we shut that down when the cold war ended
No, that was learning factual information ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
AKA the release date of Wikipedia
19:05
I never had much use for facts
Always lead to conclusions. I never liked endings
always so sad
I like endings more than the middle
Too much filler in the middle
filler's all you got. might as well make the most of it
You want to know why I know life isn't fake?
No one could ever make something this boring themselves.
Except anyone who has made a simulation game
;-;
truck simulator 2015 is a game people play
not me
"Thank you for riding the Line Ride! The ride that simulates the experience of standing in a line!"
other people
People still even play Goat Simulator
Which simulates everything except actual goats.
19:10
Hey, being a goat is harder than it sounds.
@Mitch Incidentally, sorry about that.
@DeltaEscher You think Sim City isn't boring for the Sims?
@MattE.Эллен You see, when a mommy and a daddy love each other very much...
@MετάEd No problem, nothing to be sorry about (and if my memory serves, though it may well not), literally.
@Mitch s/love each other very much/have too much to drink/ FTFY
@Mitch Okay, sorry about that, sorry.
I'm sorry I brought it up.
Which is not particularly being very sorry
But I am sorry about that.
@KitZ.Fox Um.. I don't think just saying "Hey, keep on target" is enough. It's not like there's an agenda. If 'on target is desired it should be a constructive comment, like 'oh, back to yod-coalescence in Anglo-saxon... what was the consensus there?'
@KitZ.Fox I think the subject matter is (usually) irrelevant. it's "snide comments" that's the problem.
19:32
@Mitch Yeah you always think things are irrelevant. /snide
That's ... irrelevant?
We could talk about the time
It's relevant ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
That one time?
@Mitch are you able to delete a message of yours from like 15 minutes ago?
Where that guy did that thing?
19:34
Just time
@MattE.Эллен Was there a particular one you had in mind?
And its relevancy ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
@Mitch no, just trying to see if there is a time limit on the delete (there isn't for mods)
There is for non-mods @MattE.Эллен
1 hour ago, by Mitch
eww...
I'll do that one
19:35
The time limit is 5 minutes
Oh. Actually I won't. because it won't let me.
"You look well" is a compliment but what does it entail?
I think I knew that.
@DeltaEscher thanks
19:36
I can't delete my message from 3 minutes ago
@Mitch thanks
and I OWN this room.
@MattE.Эллен mei shir
@MoonOwl22 It entails that you normally do not look well
Oh dear
19:36
@MoonOwl22 It's usually taken at face value.
@MoonOwl22 she's fooling you.
That or your friends aren't 100% sophisticated
you look pretty good usually
One or the other ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Well, she said it out of the blue. Normally she'd say "I like your shirt" or "I like your moustache"
But I associate being well with being healthy in mind and body
19:39
@MoonOwl22 That's the normal implication
I associate being well to 75% mind, 25% body
like all compliments commonly used in greetings, it can often be more of a pleasantry than an actual comment on how you look.
@Mitch Yes, I agree. Like when we decided "hey, so about that interesting thing with Old English" etc.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 it's such a privilege, I can erase my whole past
@MattE.Эллен Or just move it to the trash if you want.
19:40
@MattE.Эллен wow, that's... tragic.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 also, I can erase everyone's whole past
hm... now instead of being tragic it's more of a statistic.
Nothing is more tragic than stats
19:42
Kinda like how people get more upset at a single murder than, say, a genocide.
58% of people in Nepal don't have clean water
But seriously, memory loss is one of my phobias.
That's tragic.
In the Malazan Book of the Fallen there's an immortal character who keeps losing his memory. For some reason I find him to be the most tragic of all the characters.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I'd say it was one of mine, but I have such a bad memory. I put it down to stress
19:46
Imagine being immortal and having no memory of it
The tragedy is compounded by the fact that he is a bit of a jekyll/hyde character: he goes into berserk rages and kills everyone nearby when provoked to battle. The damage is always way more extensive than warranted and this is contrary to his normal gentle nature. So in a way it's a blessing that he doesn't remember that, but he's been driven for millennia to find out why he's like that, what is he meant to do, etc.
In your loss of memory, you try to end it all
Then you realize you're immortal
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 The character Me in Dr. Who? is similar. she writes everything down so than when she starts forgetting things she can go back and read what was going on.
Then you lose your memory again
user174558
It's Fri so everyone is talkative.
19:47
I'm just usually talkative
In a series by R Scott Bakker, there is a race of "Nonmen" who were granted immortality by aliens, only to find that 1. This caused all their women to die, and 2. Their memories eventually all fade, except the horrible ones. So, for example, the best way for them to remember their families was to murder them all.
@KitZ.Fox hide it from view forever in the annals of chat
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 whoa
Hi all :)
Unfortunately the author of that series is pretty sexist so I have conflicted feelings about recommending it.
@IceGirl hello
19:50
All old authors are bad people
Mark Twain was a racist
are all bad people old authors?
Are there bad people?
Or is morality subjective
what are you talking about?
@DeltaEscher well, he's a current author
@IceGirl We're pretending we know what fancy words mean
Isn't that the point of the English language?
19:52
I don't think so
user174558
I think the world should just use English and abolish all other languages.
Do you think?
and, for example, every single female character in his one series is either a slave, a whore, or an incestuous slut. (And I use the word slut to mean, he portrays her negatively for having sex... though since it's with her son... anyway.)
Or is morality subjective?
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
@DeltaEscher That was an ill of his character. Whether he was a racist or not, he did well as an author.
19:54
I agree
user174558
@DeltaEscher That is a very nice face.
I learned how to trick people into painting my fence!
@JasperLoy Is thank
Did I just thank Jasper?
@DeltaEscher tell them that they'd be really bad at painting your fence?
Or is morality subjective? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
@MattE.Эллен Brag about how fun painting the fence is
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That deserves a good reading
user174558
19:55
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Incest is not immoral to me. It is even legal in some countries.
@JasperLoy Yeah... I don't really want to debate that, but it's not just whether the thing is immoral (to you), it's that it's portrayed as deviant and immoral by the author, and it's not just one female character, but all of them.
So, the work as a whole is problematic.
user174558
It is 4 AM here.
2:00 in the PM
Kind of a pity
I wake up just as you go to sleep.
user174558
Don't you have school?
20:01
I am at school.
lel
School's the only place I've ever talked to you from
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Please define problematic. The term is often misused by first year sociology students
Can I define Problematic again @MoonOwl22 ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
user174558
@MoonOwl22 Problematic is just a word in the dictionary.
They often use it to describe anything that they disagree with
I define problematic as something that is an obstacle in the face of something important (or menial) that would take immense work or is close to impossible to remove
20:03
@MoonOwl22 problematic: having or posing a problem
So everything is problematic
Technically
Only if "everything" has, or poses, a problem
context matters, here.
Everyone has and poses a problem
No matter how large or menial it is
@DeltaEscher You may as well not bother using the word "everyone" then. Any time outside of math when you use words like "all", "everyone", etc, there is always a context that restricts the intended meaning.
20:06
And I think for effective use, it's relative so I agree with both of you
If you're going to insist on always using the unrestricted meaning, you'll never be able to communicate with anyone.
In any case, I think I clearly articulated the specific problems I find in the books, so I don't feel I need to justify my use of the word "problematic".
You're right @Mr.ShinyandNew安宇
I'll be communicating with everyone instead ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I'm happy you clarified and I agree with you
@MoonOwl22 Do you find people using "problematic" to mean something other than "having problems"?
20:09
Any specific examples?
slowly copies YouTube link
When people at my university especially first year sociology students have someone disagreeing with with socialist ideas they call you problematic and oppressive. 'Problematic' is a word they use when they fail to argue. That's my experience at uni. My nurtured response to the word is often asking for clarification because I'm aware of the weight culture has on linguistics
Pardon my poor punctuation and grammar. I'm in an uncomfortable position
your back is up against the door of a service station toilet?
But someone disagreeing with someone else IS problematic to that person.... it's not necessarily bad usage.
@MoonOwl22 You're fine, well within tolerable bounds :p
Thank you. Are we agreeing that the word is subjective and relative?
20:18
Relative, sure. Subjective? Only inasmuch as you could argue whether or not a problem exists.
And should be used more carefully in situations where discussions have objectivity at the core of their cause
Someone will say: Nothing is absolute
That statement is an absolute.
my kids always like to say "Today is Opposite Day, so No means Yes" when I tell them "no" to something. Then I tell them "If today is Opposite day, then today isn't opposite day". Proof by contradiction.
4
@MattE.Эллен That's not nice :-)
@MετάEd wrong ping
lel
20:35
Hello! Is this sentence correct: "Make sentences according to the given scheme" ?
@Yoda It has no grammatical errors. Without context it's impossible to know if it means what you want it to mean.
Thank you very much, that's good enough : )
@KitZ.Fox @Mitch Please can yo have a look at my answer and tell me things I've missed. Cheers
20:53
@MattE.Эллен Can I edit and put in headings?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 It only is a problem when you don't notice anymore.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 on the surface that's pretty messed up. also messed up a couple levels deeper.
@JasperLoy word is a problematic word in the dictionary
@MattE.Эллен that's relative. also context dependent. some service stations.... I've said too much
I used to work for a gas station. It was a'ight.
21:10
@Mitch yes
@MattE.Эллен Done
That's how fast I am
note comment about pinging.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 and for punishment I bet you make them cut the hair of those who don't cut their own hair.
@Mitch I make them formulate a proof of what happens if Pinnochio says "My nose is about to grow."
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 "Mom, can we have poptarts and syrup for dinner? Dad is trying to blow our minds. Again."
21:31
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 It's obvious.
21:52
@MετάEd as plain as the nose on your face
@Mitch Not that plain, I hope.
So, hello.
Oh geez. performs chest compression on chat
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 cough sputter Oh, hello!
The topic is apparently what happens when Pinocchio says "my nose is about to grow".
Because English.
22:01
Oh. Well that explains some things.
It either does or it doesn't grow.
Yes, can't argue with that.
Did he say anything right before he said that?
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Hmm. Let's ask him.
He told me he doesn't know, he's just a humble thought problem.
How can 'my nose is about to grow' by itself be a lie?
22:20
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Well what is a lie?
I want to go home.
user174558
I am home.
It's like 2AM there.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Ah, definition by example :-)
user174558
Wait, if you want to go home and I am home, does that mean you want to go I?
user174558
It's actually 6 AM here.
I went two hours the wrong way.
user174558
How are things at work?
Slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow.
How are things at I?
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Nice picture of Pinocchio's nose.
user174558
22:26
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 OK. My mum recently started cooking for the first time in her life. She put some things in the oven and now she cooks once a week.
@JasperLoy Hooray!
@MετάEd Ha.
user174558
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I have never cooked my entire life. It's always takeaway, which is nice.
user174558
Star Wars 7 next week.
@JasperLoy I'm not much for cooking.
user174558
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Are you at work now? An hour more to knock off?
22:36
@JasperLoy 20 minutes.
user174558
Sound is so much better using earphones on my desktop.
I want to do something with chicken some day.
Well just to wrap this topic up, his nose grows.
user174558
Chickens are very useful. Feathers, meat and eggs.
22:38
Definitely.
user174558
If I were to choose one animal only on earth, I choose chickens.
user174558
Some day, I might want to go vegetarian, but it is not this day.
user174558
That is so cheesy.
user174558
Some day, I might want to stop hating my enemies, but it is not this day.
22:41
Is that better?
Chickens, I chews you.
user174558
All men have a male chicken.
@JasperLoy Really? Let me have a pikachu.
@MετάEd of course that exists.
user174558
22:44
All women have a cat.
My workplace is getting uncomfortable.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 It's my nose.
user174558
I have a question.
22:47
I have a cat, apparently.
user174558
Why is the book 'The little prince' so popular?
I like it because when I was a kid it was a great story and when I grew up it was still a great story.
user174558
Maybe someone can get rich by writing 'The little princess'.
user174558
22:49
Pinocchio is a lovely story.
user174558
It is also a lovely name.
user174558
I had some Indian tosai for dinner just now.
user174558
I prefer using single quotes, but when I came to SE, I switched to double quotes, because that is the norm.
user174558
Maybe everyone should switch to single quotes: saves ink, saves space.
user174558
I love blue eyes.
user174558
22:53
I think white eyes are scary.
@JasperLoy You'd like Arrakis.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Bye!
23:08
@MετάEd Bye!
