@crl
of course Cerb & Rob and the rest of you bikers
22:29
@JohanLarsson Wait, don't lump me in with @Cerb. I'm a serious biker.
It was a mistake for me to google demotivational bicycle images.
I'm getting to the point where I can't get my heart rate up unless I'm going up a considerable incline or else really cranking it into the wind.
All day long while I'm working I'm just counting the hours until I can get out on the bike.
So far no face plants. crosses fingers
@Robusto I am only a joking biker.
@JohanLarsson Very true.
@Robusto That's interesting. Endorphin addiction?
Still, it is a better addiction than most.
@Cerberus I do feel calmer after exercise. That could be for other reasons, though.
22:42
> Five indicators of exercise addiction are:[5]

An increase in exercise that may be labeled as detrimental, or becomes harmful.
A dependence on exercise in daily life to achieve a sense of euphoria; exercise may be increased as tolerance of the euphoric state increases.
Not participating in physical activity will cause dysfunction in one's daily life.
Withdrawal symptoms following exercise deprivation including anxiety, restlessness, depression, guilt, tension, discomfort, loss of appetite, sleeplessness, and headaches.
@Cerberus I'm sure that's part of it, though. On days when I can't ride I feel cranky, and have this icky feeling like my body will dissolve into suet unless I get some exercise.
Hmm.
It may also be part compulsion.

@crl: New record today. I did my course in 55:39, but my knee hurt almost the entire way.
Okay, I think you fit into one of the criteria, theoretically.
> Exercise addiction is thought to be related to the euphoric feelings resulting from the rapid release of endorphins that occurs during intense bouts of exercise. Although the evidence is not conclusive, there is a high correlation between exercise addiction and endorphins. Endorphins work by activating opiate receptors in the brain causing pain relief and are also correlated with causing euphoric feelings.[8] The decrease of pain and increase in euphoric feelings creates a positive feedback loop associated with exercise which is thought to be a cause of addiction. This feedback loop also
@Cerberus Nevertheless, my health is much better than before my knee got fixed. Cholesterol 108, blood pressure 110/65, resting heart rate ~50 bpm, etc.

Sure, your addiction may not be harmful.
Better than being addicted to video games.
Probably, yes.
And it gives me time to think. Uninterrupted.

Q: Is this the correct use of colons "His songs persisted: Click-clock, click-clock, click-clock"?

user142917Is the sentence "His songs persisted: Click-clock, click-clock, click-clock" the colon is supposed to imitate/portray the sounds of "His songs" but I'm not sure if the colon is enough an explanation for the "click-clock" being the sound of the song.

Here's someone who clearly doesn't know how to read. I told him how to look up the answer and he still didn't get it.
Can I ask questions about essays in this chat?
@MendyK You can ask anything you want.
We may or may not choose to answer, however, depending on whether we know the answer, feel like answering, etc.
22:52
Ok. Can a comparison & contrast essay be a story?
Is this for your homework?
Not really, I'm prewriting for an in-class college paper
Then the only person whose opinion matters on the subject is the professor or lecturer.
I can tell you that the vast majority of essays are not done as stories, per se.
Ok, thanks. I'm just looking for a way to spice it up, and a story came to mind.
Some of the best non-fiction has a story-like feel to it, though.
Read some of John McPhee's "creative nonfiction" for an example.
22:58
I'll take a look at that.
Do you have any general suggestions to make a paper interesting?
Nothing more than this: always try to write papers that you yourself would want to read.
Because if you can't get yourself interested, you sure as hell aren't going to interest anybody else.
23:12
@tchrist "To make this sound more coherent you might using try"?
misolexia
@tchrist irony
God is an iron.
Iron is a god.
23:25
That is very ironic.
I never took you for a godly man.
