4:02 PM
@rumtscho sure it's a diamond shape on the large scale, but no, Adam-Y and mitochondrial-X Eve probably did not ever meet. two separate (related of course) populations.

@GeorgePompidou How do you know what they're meant for?

my grandmother told me.
and many things she says make sense. as opposed to what I hear from fundamentalists, which is generally hateful, conservative garbage.
and other forms of utter idiocy.

@GeorgePompidou Well someone sure sounds hateful now ;)

aside from that, I've taken history classes before.
so I know what real history was like, and I know what fairy tales are.
and I can tell the difference because I wasn't born yesterday.

@Mitch yes, they didn't really meet. But they may have lived around the same time, which still suggests tightly related populations, it is even consistent with a possible bottleneck event where there was lots of incest.

4:05 PM
so?

anyway, this discussion has happened before and leads nowhere. plays FIFA.

@rumtscho yeah, that's where I'm leading. a bottleneck, but not down to exactly two people, but a small group of humans (in the hundreds?)

@Mitch nobody knows for the "hundreds" part, it's all speculation. And as for other bottlenecks, there is one theory for the Native Americans which says that from the initial population which reached it, only four women survived. Although for that, I'm unclear if they were the American Eves with the others' offspring dying out, or if they are supposed to really have been the only living women on the continent.

@Cerberus but if life expectancy is increasing through technology, the percentage of old people will rise (as it certainly is developed areas). So, by that reasoning, eventually there'll be mostly old, most religious people..

As for the original genetic Adam and Eve, sure, I don't subscribe to the idea that they were the only living pair of humans in the world

4:10 PM
but, to set things straight…
@curiousdannii yes, I certainly am hateful of people whose religion tells them to discriminate against and hate others.
a double standard, maybe.

@rumtscho hm.. interesting. I wonder if it makes any difference whether it was just four initially or eventually everybody else's offspring died out.

but it is so.

@GeorgePompidou That's fair

except for the hating part. that's so ... hateful

true.
I suppose I'm a hater hater.

4:12 PM
But if you're going to mock Christians in particular, there's a huge difference between discrimination and hatred

ein Hasserhasser, if you will.

maybe it'd be better to be a hater snob or a hater annoyed-byer

@GeorgePompidou but a hater hater is still a hater. It's not a recursive relationship I'd like to live in.

@curiousdannii I mock Christians in particular, because having spent most of my life in the United States, I've had to deal with their insane bullshit being shoved in my face much more than other religions.

@GeorgePompidou I'd hate to be surrounded by Americans too.

4:14 PM
so I'm frustrated with them. I also have a massive problem with the Catholic church—which seems to be a big part of Christianity.
exactly.

@Robusto well true, but what is the part of power used when pulling feet upwards? must be something <5% (The Best Cyclists Don’t Produce Power When They Pull Up on the Backstroke ), also there are traffic lights and other reasons to stop 2 or 3 times, and getting another pair of shoes with you is annoying, if I were not going for work I would prefer pedal with fixations too, but in my case they are superfluous
Here's my current bike

@Cerberus fortunately the cars doesn't go that fast, I should try to remove that sign next time, for encouraging high speeds :)

@crl I certainly use it for powering up hills. And that makes the difference.
@crl Looks like a commuter.

7:20 PM
greeah
is frequently annoyed by cyclists

crl
7:32 PM
@GeorgePompidou annoyed? how?

they're always in the way of cars and slowing them down, and they have run me over when I'm on foot multiple times.
sometimes my bus to campus travels 10km/h the entire way because it's stuck behind an oblivious cyclist.
then there's critical mass. don't even get me started on critical mass.
a festival of cyclists unaware that many people have jobs to which to get.

crl
@GeorgePompidou How many kms or miles away are you from your work?

it doesn't matter. in Chicago, distance doesn't matter. so many people travel cross-town to get to places, and a torrent of 10000 cyclists blocking major streets is shockingly illogical.

crl
That's your point of view that I find illogical

and over here in Germany, many bike lanes are either combined with car lanes, or they're on the sidewalk.
that also is illogical. bikes travel much faster than pedestrians and much slower than cars
thereby inconveniencing everyone who isn't on a bike. it's not fair.

crl
7:39 PM
but blaming them isn't fair either

if there were bike lanes everywhere, then that's a different story.
I don't blame them for being cyclists. I blame the majority of cyclists I've encountered for not realizing they're being pests.
if they see a pedestrian in front of them, they should change course or slow down. instead of running me over.
if they see a car behind them, they should move over and let it pass.

crl
well I don't slow down cars too much, except when there are holes in the right part of the road

why can't cyclists just pull over if there's cars, and let them pass? or find a street which doesn't have that much traffic? people drive cars for a reason—to get to their destination faster.
if they are stuck behind a bike, this is a waste of fuel and it's a pity for the environment.

crl
they actually save fuel when going slower
if they know how to drive (not overloading engine)

not if they don't get to their destination in time.
if they miss their appointment, it's a total waste of fuel.
and they may as well have stayed home.
even more so if a cyclist is slowing down a bus.
which happens half my morning commutes to school here.
grumbles

crl
7:56 PM
I understand you, but car drivers can be assholes too: passing really close to you, insisting on passing you though there's an obvious red light just after. But fortunately most people are respecting cyclists here

I suppose you are right.

crl
I rather think bikes, when done properly, are relieving traffic congestion, because it removes cars, and you're mostly not stuck behind a bike for very long, how many time do you lost behind traffic lights in comparison? in jams? for parking? bikes are insignificant

I just wish that everyone would be less pesky when it comes to people commuting. and I am not as frequently annoyed/run over by cars as I am by bikes.

crl
please take a photo next time you see one
so I can judge how far from the side/how annoying the bike really is

in Chicago, they affect nothing. I get annoyed by traffic jams almost daily, and then bikes add insult to that.
I will for sure do a video next time my bus is crawling behind a bike.
I'll do it every time just so you can see the amount of times.

8:04 PM
:)) ok

8:17 PM
fun fact: "twelve+one" can rearrange to "eleven+two"

8:34 PM
Random piece of Internet fun I though this room would enjoy

8:46 PM
hmm… let's see… for my trip to Zürich, should I fly Lufthansa or should I fly Lufthansa?
so many choices.
I really think Lufthansa has been going downhill lately, and charging more than before for some reason.
but Lufthansa itself isn't too much better.
oh! there's also a flight available on Lufthansa!
I wonder how they're like
ah, all these reviews say they've been doing terribly as well.
maybe I should just fly Lufthansa.
there's so many airlines in Germany, it's baffling.
I suppose I should fly Lufthansa because when I have to go to Bucharest I'll pretty much be forced to either fly Lufthansa or Lufthansa
I suppose Lufthansa has a route to Bucharest too, but really Lufthansa and Lufthansa seem like better bets.
no wonder their quality has dropped lately. it's a flippin monopoly.
they can easily localize Kayak.com in Germany by making it redirect to Lufthansa.com

RIP Ben E. King
beer!youtube stand by me

9:13 PM
ugh, these Bifi snacks are going to kill me.

crl
9:27 PM
When I was student I used to eat snacks too, kinder bueno..
Then in the last year, I changed dramatically, a kind of eating disorder where I refused any fat, and I still do, even if I know it's not a good idea, so now I've not eaten snacks or biscuits or a pizza since 6 years

9:41 PM
sounds pretty emo
scarfs down Kinder Maxi Kings

1 hour later…
10:58 PM
what's the best regular expression that finds a newline but not two newlines
I suppose I mean a new line that does not have a newline before it
or after

crl
11:45 PM
[^\n]+\n[^\n]+

yeah…
I suppose you can't add conditions to before and after without matching them too
what bugged me is that made groups out of the pre- and pos- newline(s)

crl
Do you want to match a starting new line "\nOnce upon..." or ending "the end.\n" ?

it doesn't matter, it will be replaced with a comma.
but if there are two newlines together then one will be replaced with a semicolon.
and the other will remain
