@Cerberus I make typos a lot, but those more insidious think-os that you can't catch even on a second read, not as often.
I often say I am a better editor than writer, though, because it will take one of my coworkers an hour to produce some error-ridden thing that I can fix in another hour but that I would agonize over for like, four, the first time.
It's really a good thing all considered that I am paid mostly for getting rid of words and not producing them.
@aediaλ Oh, I was rather thinking of common typos: I often don't see them on a second read if they're my own.
@aediaλ Yeah I agree, editing is somehow easier!

Q: Which is correct: The rest of the staff is or are? The rest of my family is or are?

@z7sgѪ can you give any suggestion for my problem
11:39
@kith:Hi
@Sankar Good morning.
@Kitḫ Good morning, can you pls look above conversation and give me some suggestions
@SankarGanesh The guy sounds like an ass and not worth your time. Make some new friends, preferably ones outside your office.
11:55
@Kitḫ Thanks man , when i asked this to that guy , frankly he says i m sentimental person
@SankarGanesh It sounds like he is taking advantage of your good nature to make himself look good at your expense.
He wants to keep doing that, so he's going to tell you you're wrong, that he's not really being mean.
You'd be better off asking other people what they think of his behavior toward you.
He sounds like a bully to me, and if he's not that, he's still not listening to you when you tell him to knock it off, so either way, he's a jerk.
@Kitḫ well said i thought the same . bcoz he saying that teasing me is a pass time for me my dear friend , u know he always teasing my english comunication too, when i said donot kidd me , he said why you speak english wrongly
@SankarGanesh Ah, so, he wants to say that he is better than you always. That's his "fun."
Well, I can see why that would not be fun for you.
@Kitḫ recently i had cut my hair, he teasing me a lot , saying that Steve Jobs maight seen my new hair style so that he died , also he's saying that i m newbie which is by given god to tease , he also says he will bring his college frnds and ask them to tease me
@kith: most of time , i smile and left the place, but it was irritating when someone kidding you again and again
@SankarGanesh Well, then, it sounds like he is a bully. It is true that n00bs often get teased, but gently and politely in a way that builds morale rather than destroys it.
You should tell him to go to hell and then just ignore him.
Or every time he teases you, you could ask him nicely if he feels better now that he's put you down. Or if you want to be vulgar, you could ask him if his penis feels any bigger after he's mocked you.
12:08
@Kitḫ you in room , i stopped taking to him , but he came to me and start kidding me , without a\having any reason , like saying that i m looking like Titanic Hero and so on , and then telling that this guy wants to be titanic hero , LOL, he bringing other guys also, but he helped me twice in a problem , that's why i m confused , whether this guy can be good or bad , or he just playing, the main reason is he 's so rich and i came from poor family , my father is a farmer ,
Myeh. Hard to say. Maybe you are taking his teasing too personally. In any case, if you have asked him to ease up and he hasn't, then he's not being very nice.
Besides, he might have helped you with a problem to show that he knows more than you do, which makes him feel good.
@kith: So i donot know most modern culture, meanwhile his father is a business man who work all countries , so he aware of all things, you know i did saw hollywood movies , i saw very few movies , he usually saw hollywood movies and saying like that, one day he told me that i m doing like pink pather i donot know ant pink pather i searched google and came to know, always teasing me :)
@kith: he helped me , but he teasing me badly
Well, maybe you think it is bad because you don't know most modern culture. I mean, I don't think it's so bad to say that you would want to look like Leo DiCaprio. Who wouldn't want that?

@Kitḫ Thanks for spending time with me
@SankarGanesh The feeling is mutual, friend. I hope you make friends with some nice people.
@Kitḫ first timei m seeing this type of person in my life , it's my fate, waiting for my time , so that i can move from here and get going , i lost my gud friend on jan in an accident in my hometown
@kith: i asked my teammate , what this guy want to do , they said why you taking his teasing serious , people stop it when you wonot care , so i tried not taking serious just smiling, he also said he's kidding just for timepass, so donot give priority for it , now my team mate realized and he stop teasing me with him , :)
@SankarGanesh My condolences. That is a very difficult thing.
It takes a long time to adjust to such big changes.
You are far from home and in a new, very different place.
With very different kinds of people.
You should try making friends outside of work, and look for other people who are from farming villages or that kind of thing, so they understand you better.
Also, they can help you understand your new world, too, because it was new to them once.
@Kitḫ yes i understood this new world that guy is having jerk bcoz he wants to show that he is better than me and for his timepass he kidding me
I had worked with a US client and Uk client and also helped plenty peoples all the over the world , sofar None of the people had told that my communication is very difficult for understand them but this is the only guy saying like that, :)
@kith: Anyhave i just start teasing that guy very badly, if he teased me again
i m not slave for anybody , i m not so rich so i was not able to know more modern things in my childhood, but now i m working hard to reach that level and start kick off these people asshole, to prove none of the people are not down like you , am i right ?
12:37
That's right.
@Kitḫ Thank you Gentleman
Poor does not mean dumb or low-class.
@Kitḫ he says he knows kick boxing , swimming , i donot knew these things in my childhood , but i would like to go swimming , without going to Gym , how can i maintain my body fit, bcoz that guy telling me that he's going to be a body builder you donot know abt it, :)
Pshaw. You don't need to be a body builder. You can run for free. I bet your body's strong from working the fields. That's good, honest labor and not some paid-for machine that accomplishes nothing while making your muscles hard.
@Kitḫ thank you mate
12:43
I come from a poor family too. Nothing makes me angrier than rich people trying to buy everything from health to happiness.
@Kitḫ well said , :)
I think it's stupid to pay money for things you can get for free.
I also feel like having another cup of coffee. BRB.

hey so I was inspired by @Hugo's musing about a radio alphabet that's confusing, like "P as in ptarmigan", and I started putting together a list but I'm missing some letters. Anyone know any words that start with these letters but don't sound like they do? a b f i l n q r s v z
@MrShinyandNew安宇 "It's an elaborate ruse!" hahahahahaha
@aediaλ yeah I liked that one too :)
I can't stop laughing
harkavagrant.com says she was inspired by the version of the book with the beautiful woodcuts, which I have!
@MrShinyandNew安宇 "a as in aitch"
Illustrations make everything better.
13:53
they don't all have to be silent letters, good to mix it up with plain confusing ones too
@Hugo Yeah I have j as in jalepeno
a as in aitch is pretty cruel though.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yeah, it's a good 'un!
I also have e as in eunuchs and u as in unix
some of them are good if used together, like k as in koran and q as in quran
(though my list has k as in knight)
@MrShinyandNew安宇 "E as in ewe" is better
q-u-a-k-e
13:57
quran unix aitch koran eunuchs
yeah that's pretty evil
right now I have q as in qanat
e as in esophagus and o as in oesophagus
"B as in bdellium"
hmmmmm
That's a good one but a very rare word
Jez
Jez
"Ewe is bad", when spoken, sounds ungrammatical
As a general strategy, I'd go for misleading letter names (aich, ewe), then silent initials (ptarmigan), then just rare or hard to spell words.
Bonus points for combos
14:05
f as in effigy?
Still need F I L N R S V Z
yes, that's a good one, but I prefer the tougher "A as in aitch", especially as many think it's really haich
but effigy doesn't start with f

how an alternative "J as in Juan", as it sounds like one
@Hugo not bad. I'm a bit wary about proper names but it may be worth including
and ptarmigan as first choice over pneumonia and pterodactyl, as it's less likely to be known
if there was a famous enough chinese concept I could put in a zh- word because it's pronounced like j. But I can't think of any.
14:16
"Z as in zyzzyva"
can't think of any silent Zs
I can't think of any non i-sounding words, but what about "i as in iatrogenesis" or something where it makes the /ɪ/ sound at the start like "i as in indigo"
muttering This is why we don't make changes on the production server...
perhaps just something misleading "I as in in"
Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!
or "I as in illude", sounds a bit like allude?
14:23
@aediaλ it doesn't work if I can't pronounce the word :)
a as in allusion
just to be confusing.
aren't aitch and aisle confusing enough? :)
yes, it's permissible to combine a confusing one with its confusand. So you can say "a as in allusion and i as in illusion" or "a as in aisle and i as in isle"
@MrShinyandNew安宇 pfft you can learn it en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iatrogenesis
@aediaλ I find it hard to read IPA. are those two initial vowels supposed to be pronounced separately?
PS does anyone like my word "confusand"? I just made it up.
14:26
for R, how 'bout picking a word from French or Spanish that we've pretty much borrowed? Like "r as in rouge"? (or does that not work because you would then Englishificate the pronunciation and make it back into our R)
@MrShinyandNew安宇 It was perfectly clear in context. I like it.
@aediaλ when I speak English I pronounce rouge with an English R.
Even though I know French.
but if you can think of an R word where lots of people turn it into a W sound, that'd be spiffy
@MrShinyandNew安宇 It's the diphthong that sounds like the letter "I", followed by ah as in rather
they're giving "iatrogenic"
or is there an R-word that sounds like another word that begins ar-?
@aediaλ ok that's what I concluded
@Hugo hm, good idea
@Hugo ooh good idea. "ar-" words might work too
@MrShinyandNew安宇 oh great now all I can think of is Elmer Fudd. Wascally wabbits to the wescue?
@Hugo i just realized I said the same thing as you, but I meant, er- words, or something. I don't know what I meant...
Not enough coffee.
14:32
@aediaλ R as in wabbits. hmm :)
@Hugo all I can come up with for sounds alike for r is, like, "r as in radiated and i as in irradiated" which isn't quite the same. I have been playing too much Fallout.
(In which there is an item called the Wazer Wifle, also.)
any initialisms for these? "R as in REM", any better ones?
especially if it also sounds like a word
@Hugo Ooh if initialisms are allowed that's perfect
"R as in RO"?
@aediaλ if there's nothing better, initialism or a rare/hard to spell word is probably ok
"R as in RT"
"F as in formation", sounds like "information"
"S as in SA"
L as in LOL, Z as in ZOMG? I can't come up with anything better for those
F as in FCC, L as in LSD?
N and V are still totally missing!
14:48
rather have one that when you say it, it sounds like something else
so RT sounds like arty
L as in LO, sounds like 'ello, but LO isn't a very good one
Ohhh I finally just got the "F as in-formation" hahah
I like that a lot.
@aediaλ yeah, there could be lots of variations of in-something for other letters
@aediaλ the better ones will be those where in-<something> is more common than <somthing>
"D as in dividual" :)
Haha!
V: are there any German or Dutch loanwords where the v- sounds like f-? Volkswagen is too easy
@Hugo you say Volkswagen with an initial f?
14:56
And that's one where V isn't pronounced f for many people in English, anyway. It's problematic...
@MrShinyandNew安宇 no, but you could
maybe there's a word that confuses initial p with initial b
p as in peer and b as in beer
berry/parry?
actually I just remembered that we've covered p already, and b has bdellium
Actually, a lot of those are terribly easy to mix up when spoken (it's easy to mishear them), but if you plan to write the alphabet it's not so funny anymore
14:59
well, when you can write, you don't need a radio alphabet :)
maybe for words that don't have any confusing initial spellings we should just go with words that will confound the listener
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Exactly, this is the radio alphabet to annoy call centre staff :)
@Hugo Or better: when working in a call center, to annoy customers when you give them a confirmation number
peer/beer is perfect then, but ptarmigan is so much more confusing I would hate to see it go
15:02
"Your confirmation is number is P as in Peer, B as in Beer, three, zero, T as in three, Z as in zero, two, one, T as in tsunami, two three, D as in djinn"
also amusing would be if the radio alphabet words were all in the same theme. Like, alcoholic drinks. or euphemisms for masturbation.
maybe we need radio words for numbers too. "Three as in threesome". "Two as in tudor".
@MrShinyandNew安宇 yes, number confusion is good too
"S as in six/seven"
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Something we do in amateur radio is that when someone can't even get your callsign or exchange they will ask to confirm just a part, like the number, and you'll say, "no, that was three, one two THREE alpha merry land dee cee" (that's a Field Day exchange)
So you could repeat all the numbers
"F as in four/five"
like three is "one two three"
"O as in one"
"Z as in zero"
the useless "O as in oh"
15:06
oh that is so perfect
o as in one is good because it's easily used with w as in won
"N as in nine"
e as in eight and a as in ate
and eight as in 8
still don't have anything at all for L, R, V, and the ones for F, S, Z, N could be better
f (formation when used as "F as in-formation"), (four/five when combined with numbers)
s (six/seven when combined with numbers)
z (zero, when combined with numbers)
n (nine, when combined with numbers)
L: some obscure words here, like lixiviation, lythcoop phrontistery.info/l.html

Q: How are these names pronounced in English?

jftugaHow are these Brazilian (Portuguese) names pronounced in (U.S.) English? João Gilberto Astrud Gilberto Bebel Gilberto Vinicius de Moraes Antonio Carlos Jobim Vivo Sonhando

Nohat used his supermod powers to open this again.
17:25
Every time I hear supermod I imagine caped crusaders.
17:35
I need some writing input.
"The usability of the system is of critical importance, and I can’t improve it without your help."
I would like to say this better.
It's a bird. It's a plane! No, it's the Supermods! Nohat is just a normal hat-wearing-guy, when, what's that, it's trouble brewing in the ELUs? Phone booths don't exist anymore, but no worries: he takes off his hat for the perfect disguise! With mighty wings and talons of judgment his owly companion swoops in, and here comes his trusty sidekick, the boy wonder himself! And as quick as you can say voiced palato-alveolar fricative they're on the scene.
Wait, you probably didn't want to write that.
hehe
What do you really want to say? "I need your help to make the system better?" "I need your help to test the system, so that it works better for everyone?"
The latter, but less scarily.
Essentially "you're all beta testers" but to an audience of people who don't know what beta testing is.
It's important that the system be easy for everyone to use. I need your help to try it out so that we can make it better.
17:38
Not bad, except they are not trying it out. They are using it, and sort of compelled to do so.
Hmm.
I'm trying to do some damage control.
@simchona I don't understand why he re-opened it. It certainly seems too localized for me. Should I recognize those names? Cuz I don't.
I thought an appeal for help would make them feel like we're all in this together, rather than "I'm dictating this crappy system for your use."
Are you asking them to tell you what they have problems with in general, or are you using this as an intro to something more specific like "here's the questions I want feedback on"?
If you just ask for general feedback you won't hear from the average person who can muddle through. You will hear from one or two vocal users who are very angry that you chose blue instead of purple and that you didn't use the wording they like.
Meanwhile the real problem is that no one understands what the whole menu is for.
17:41
@JSBᾶngs JSB I read your story, it was good.
@Kitḫ If watching them use the system is out of the question then I think it helps to give your audience some sort of framework or prompts to consider. "Think about these things as you start to use the system and let us know how it was for you. We need your help to make the system better!" kind of thing, even if it's just a bulleted list of tasks they might be doing for the first time or something like that.
@Kit I'm not sure if I'm helping, but I sympathize; we "value" usability testing which means that we do it far, far less than I would like and only on very high-profile, public things.
Once, I introduced it at the paper prototype stage for something internal, and brought to light so many issues (that people had previously glossed over and seemed to think their solutions would address or that we would deal with when we got to building the thing) that I think it was kind of my fault the project died, because everyone realized it was hard, not just me.

@aediaλ That's a really good idea, and gives me a focus point for our brainstorm session in T-45 min.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Wasn't it though? I particularly liked that he used the word palanquin and that the Seraphim felt simultaneously ancient and alien, as well as accepted and familiar.
I liked how in the beginning I was just about to be mad about the figurative use of bearing the Brand of things and then I was like oh my god NO!
And then it was like a wash of chilly creepy scary.
And then I cried at the scarysad part I was brave because I'm big and strong.

@Kitḫ I have to go, good luck at the meeting...!
Punch him for me.
@aediaλ I loved the ending.
@Cerberus Thanks!
@Kitḫ Me too!
@aediaλ I was thinking "no way is JSB going to hurt that kid!"
I know but I was so scared anyway!
Well, of course, because I was also thinking "...right?"

I got really into it for a short story and I didn't see the ending coming even though it makes so much sense.
Ditto.
I liked the story so much, I didn't try to figure it out like I usually do.
It was a good length because if it were a book I might have tried to figure it out.
Yeah I thought the story flowed well and didn't have anything it didn't need
