1:15 AM
@terdon Not your fault: everyone finds it that way.

1 hour later…
2:23 AM
Hi all! How do I reformat the date "Wednesday, April 8, 2015" into British English?

That is not going to get you lynched.
Why?
And why do you think it needs such a notion applied to it?
There is an answer, however.
It’s not like the Welsh cannot read that.

@tchrist who are you replying to?

You.
They do speak a different language in Big Britain than they do in Little Britain, however.
I believe you are looking for ante diem VI Idus Apriles MMDCCLXVIII ab Urbe Condida.

@tchrist I live in North America, and you've made me very confused.

2015–04-08 has much to be said for it.
It depends completely on what the context is.
Generally, England is littleendian.
ISO is bigendian.

2:33 AM
@tchrist It's not for use in a spreadsheet, nor in a filename. It's for use in a journal of sorts.

8 April 2015

@tchrist Ah. Splendid! Do I put a comma after the day of the week, or leave it out?

@unforgettableid Please see the room topic.
Have you looked this up?
Don’t not put the comma in.

@tchrist I tried before I came to this chat room. I found that "8 April 2015" was correct. But I didn't find any information about the comma.
@tchrist "El salón incomprensible".
@tchrist Which Google Translate renders as, "The incomprehensible lounge".
Tags: [ status-by-design ].

Molto bene.

2:37 AM
:(
I guess I should try Freenode ##english, which is a far more comprehensible room.

@unforgettableid Look in an English newspaper.

Newspapers rarely mention the day of the week, the day, the month, and the year all at once.
Normally, they mention either the day of the week -- or the day, month, and year -- but not both.
Well, article text, at least.
Though maybe the header of an online newspaper article might be more helpful.
/me checks
Ah! The Guardian leaves out the comma. They write things like "Wednesday 8 April 2015" in their articles' headers.
@tchrist You answered it. Thank you very much!

Headers are not the same as inline text.

@tchrist true.
But this isn't mission-critical writing which I'm doing. I'm satisfied with relying on a header.
By the way, in the Unicode "🐼⃠", how do I separate the panda from the No sign?

I don’t know why that is happening.
It should be overlaid.

2:46 AM
You're pushing the limits of Unicode, and you probably have discovered a problem when you made the removed post that you made earlier.

But my question is a different one. How do I separate the two, in order to copy just the panda to the clipboard?

It’s \x{1F43C}\x{20E0}.
No, it should work. I’ve done it before.

"\N{PANDA FACE}\N{COMBINING ENCLOSING CIRCLE BACKSLASH}"

Cool :)
Anyway, back to other tasks. Thanks again, and have an excellent day/night!

Night.
To sleep, soon.
Past bedtime.
You too.
Wait, oh.

9 hours later…
11:44 AM
Turkey vulture on the 5th floor windowsill this morning. Pix to follow.

12:20 PM
No drumsticks, please.
I haven't seen ours yet, which is weird.

12:43 PM
> Project Habakkuk was a plan by the British during the Second World War to construct an aircraft carrier out of ice
TIL

The First of April has come and gone.
Where now the ice of yesteryear?

"Unsinkable".

@tchrist well... it's ICE!

user116848
Kewl!

12:47 PM
Seems more like something from the Cold War.

user116848
Where I come from I see ice only in a refrigerator :-)

crl
@arrowfar North Africa?
Egypt I think

user116848
@crl Nah, Pakistan. Southern part.

user116848
In the north of our country we get heavy snowfall though.

user116848
I live near the Arabian sea.

user116848
1:00 PM
The ocean is near though.

crl
Karachi?

user116848
But it gets very warm here.

user116848
@crl Yeah

user116848
How did you know? :)

user116848
Yeah it is a very big city.

crl
1:01 PM
Just saying a big city name :)
Are there sharks in the Arabian Sea?

user116848
I don't know.

user116848
There has to be some.

crl
There has been a shark attack recently in La Reunion, an island belonging to France in Indian Ocean, but seriously we know that sharks don't kill many people, less than snakes or bees, or mosquitos

user116848
I think sharks are very common in the Atlantic ocean.

user116848
@crl I see. You mean shark attack?

crl
1:04 PM
yes

user116848
Ow

crl
@arrowfar Well on the East side (Europe) there are not so frequent

user116848
Ah

crl
I've known someone who fell from his boat, he was alone, near Corsica, fortunately he had his phone with him, so he called his parents and survived after long hours in the sea

wet phone

crl
1:07 PM
yeah, really fortunate
That moment where those simple things save your life
water jacket, phone

user116848
I have heard some survival stories too. Scary stuff.

user116848
But here we don't go near the ocean due to other reasons.

user116848
I mean some do but they always try to come back before dusk.

user116848
Here we are scared of people (bad) more than sharks :-)

user116848
It is very different here.

user116848
1:18 PM
Still some spots have security and are good.

1:31 PM
We try to be down off the mountain before dusk lest we attract lions.
Somewhat similar. :)

user116848
Yeah :)

1:44 PM
If you have to overnight, a bear-bag is obligatory.

user116848
I see. For bear proofing.

user116848
In the north of our country we have the second tallest mountain in the world K-2.

user116848
So most people here go to the mountain areas to have fun and adventure. Many good spots there.

user116848
Here we have a wide variety of terrain.

user116848
From ocean to mountains to desert and whatnot :-)

user116848
1:55 PM
The only issue for tourists here is of security. So we plan ahead if we have to visit a particular area, that way we avoid all the dangers etc.

user116848
Overall a good country. I like it. Just the unexpected stuff here is what I hate the most.

user116848
Wow, I'm blogging here it seems :)

user116848
I gotta take off. See you all. Ciao!

@arrowfar That's ok! :)

4 hours later…
6:01 PM
Rob what is your opinion on Knockout?

crl
6:13 PM
Knockout.js? I like it, it's quite necessary to have it for templating and binding a list to some data without reinventing it yourself. ex: jsbin.com/bapuwi#r/kittens I declare an observable which is the text input, when you change and press enter, the computed fields are updated
(tell me if it works you should see some cats, I think you need to have an imgur account, you can log with google or twitter)
The app is using Imgur's API to show their picture galleries

I have too many security features enabled to allow that site to work.
But I do encourage kittens.

@Cerberus Do they perform better if you encourage them?
Probably their egos just get even bigger. They are felines, after all.

They do.
When I tickle them, they amp up their cuteness.

crl
@Cerberus ahh popup filter :)

@crl Amongst other things.

crl
6:26 PM
It's just a popup for authenticating, because else openid redirects and I don't know how to land back on my page

But I even allowed it to load the popup.
Still didn't work.
When I press the green Allow button in the pop-up, the pop-up turns blank and nothing happens.

crl
Hmm, can you just refresh?

I have allowed all cross-domain loading on those websites.
I have reloaded the pop-up and the page several times.

crl
you need to select google or another openid provider then click the green ok, then sometimes it freeze but if you refresh it works (for me)

In your understanding, who is homeowner?

6:40 PM
@Boris_yo someone who owns a home

Often as opposed to someone who rents.

One who owns home asset ownership wise or one who is in charge of making sure house is always clean, dishes are washed, loundry is done (can be wife), all is working, DIY etc (can be husband)

or someone who is merely a landlord
I think the word connotes both ownership and residence

Until now I had in mind what I written as well as one who owns a home...

you can be a homeowner even if you hire out all the maintenance

6:42 PM
@Boris_yo Setting aside the sexism implicit in that remark, it means someone who actually owns the house. Whose name is on the ownership papers.

maybe you are thinking of "homemaker"

^^

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Home builder?

@Boris_yo no.
a homemaker is the person who runs the home on a day-to-day basis

@terdon Sexism? For many it's just stereotype.

6:43 PM
@Boris_yo well, a sexist stereotype

@Boris_yo Tell that to my sister the militant feminist. I've been sensitized.
> a person who manages the household of his or her own family, especially as a principal occupation.
That was homemaker

homemaker usually refers to a person who doesn't have another job and is mainly doing housework, for their own home.

Homeowner:
> a person who owns a home.

my neighbour owns two houses. One is his home, he is a homeowner. One house is rented out: he is a landlord.
If he didn't own a home but only a rental house that he didn't live in, I wouldn't call him a homeowner.

If I am advertising home decor product do I advertise to homemakers then?
Like we are dedicated to deliver only high-quality products to homemakers? (Not homeowners?)

6:46 PM
Maybe that's just me.
@Boris_yo I'm not sure either word is the one you want.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 What would be correct word in your opinion?

@Boris_yo I'm not sure. But these days, at least in North America and most other English-speaking places, "homemaker" is a word that's declining in use because most people are not housewives/househusbands anymore.
And "homeowner" might be right, but might not, it depends on the product and who you expect will use it.
Let's say you're selling paint. Commonly, tenants will paint their rental units.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I don't know. How about wine corkscrew :)

@Boris_yo Corkscrews are useful to all wine drinkers, regardless of what their living arrangements are.

And if products in different categories are advertised? Like wine corkscrew and glass vase? Probably there needs to be generic term...

6:50 PM
You could just say "for your home"
it doesn't matter what kind of home you have, who owns it, what your job is.

Actually it's supposed to be in description of business.

The product isn't for a particular role, it's for people.

@crl no cats, I use adblock if that explains it

@Boris_yo Well, I'm not sure what the best word you'd want is. But "homeowner" is the subset of people who own homes they live in. "homemaker" is "housewife/househusband" and doesn't apply to anyone who has a job outside the home.
If you want to sell products to people with jobs, or people who rent, then those are the wrong words.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 You mention that homemaker is term that is less and less used in US. Why is that in your opinion? Society changes?

7:00 PM
@crl I tried Twitter, but nothing happens when I press the Twitter button.
But, again, this is probably owing to the additional security measures I use in my browser.

@Boris_yo Because the traditional model of "husband works, wife stays at home" is not as common. more and more women are working. Parenting duties and chores are becoming more evenly shared. etc.
So the label applies to fewer and fewer people.

@Boris_yo we could help you more if you gave us the entire sentence but I would probably change it to not aim at people but at the house itself. "For the home" or "For your household" or something like that. There is no word for people who live in houses that I know of. Only words for people who have no house.

7:18 PM
@terdon "We are dedicated to bring?/deliver? quality home bar and home decoration products to your household?/for your household?"

8:10 PM
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Nice!!

@RegDwigнt Have you seen Wilders's speech for PEGIDA?
"Wir sind das Volk!"
Now what does that remind me of...

Your fruitcake could be a nice lead-in for the above. ^_^

@Boris_yo I think you have your own answer, advertise to people interested in home decor, not to some label (the labels are changing in usage)
@Boris_yo sounds good.
@terdon but to answer in a sense the implicit question, in the US, the common term nowadays is SAHM, stay at home mom, or SAHD, stay at home dad. So it used to be housewife then homemaker then ... I feel like nothing for awhile ... then SAHM.

crl
@Cerberus @JohanLarsson ok thanks anyway, I'll make it more standard

8:27 PM
@crl I use Adblock too.

Guys, is anyone familiar with arrowfar?

Why?

sigh -- I don't know if this will make things worse.

@DamkerngT. he is a regular here

But I was thinking that maybe we could use your help. He was in an argument with me.
I mean, he is.
And I think the more I try to explain, the worse it gets.

8:33 PM
where?

In ELL room.
Thanks!

user116848
Hey, what are you doing? @DamkerngT.

@arrowfar don't think he meant any harm

user116848
Thanks!

crl
@Cerberus me too, this doesn't matter
@arrowfar What is the meaning of "arrowfar"?

8:45 PM
@crl I also use Noscript, Request Policy, and Self-Destructing Cookies.

user116848
@crl Just a name. I mixed up "arrow" + "far" :-)

crl
@Cerberus Noscript is for "no javascript"?

Yes, it lets you enable Javascript per domain.
But I enabled it for your site and Imgur.

crl
@arrowfar a far-off arrow?

But it does more, ABE stuff and whatnot.

crl
8:50 PM
ok

user116848
@crl Yeah sort of.

crl
Is fish (as a food) considered as meat? because in French we wouldn't use 'viande' (meat) for fishes?

Usually not, sometimes it is.
Depends on context.

user116848
@DamkerngT. By the way this was a wrong move. You shouldn't have involved folks from here.

user116848
8:54 PM
Why?

user116848
Why did you come here to look for help?

user116848
You are talking my Goodwill here man.

user116848
Don't do it.

user116848
I'll talk to a community moderator like I said the other day.

@arrowfar Hey, why do you care so much about him?

user116848
8:56 PM
He is attacking me. debating with me. picking on me.

If someone annoys you for whatever reason, the easiest way to be rid of the annoyance is by ignoring him.

user116848
@Cerberus I don't. I don't give a crap. He just gets on my nerves sometimes.

OK.

user116848
okay

If you just don't reply to him, then you won't let him get on your nerves.

user116848
8:57 PM
okay, I'll try.

The same applies vice versa.
Yay!
Again, I don't know the history, but I like you both, so I just want no fighting.

user116848
yeah

I've had fights here too.
But at the moment I am at peace with everyone, or so I believe.

@Cerberus I'll get you my pretty, and your little dog too!

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Am I pretty?
And who is my dog?
Robusto?

9:05 PM
maybe I'm the dog?
the poodle's puppy?

@Cerberus it's a quote from The Wizard of Oz
I'm trying to show that you're still in a state of chat war
maybe chat cold war
you can never rest

Ah.
I have not read it.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 With whom?

@Cerberus everyone!

That is very...inclusive.

indeed!
But I cannot elaborate further. I must be off, to commit nefarious schemes.
or to pick up my kids from daycare.
nefarious kids!
probably

9:12 PM
Haha.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 They will no doubt perform nefarious acts in this room soon.
Bye!

9:24 PM
@Boris_yo Sorry, I was having dinner. Yeah, that sounds good.
@Mitch SAHM? OMFG.
