@waiwai933 Quite well for English. Learnt from dictionary at 12 in 30 min. Sure, blog post from you would be nice.
03:15
@waiwai933 I'd say I recognize only the most basic English sounds, enough to follow the pronunciations in dictionaries. Most symbols I'd have to look up.

8 hours later…
10:48
@Reg How did I miss that? "You are confusing me with kiamlaluno."
user19161
@kiamlaluno Reg is in Rome with wife for a week, should be ending soon.
Oh… he didn't ask me permission for that. Good luck to him with the Romans.
user19161
I hoped he finished packing before leaving. That day he said he was half done only when he came back to talk to us. :)
user19161
Maybe he went there without any clothes.
By the way, I cite the NOAD because I know for which English dialect is, not because it's included the Mac OS X. I have the Collins, and the Dictionary.com on my iPod, but it's not clear to which English dialect they make reference.
user19161
10:56
@kiamlaluno I hate dictionary.com and collins.
It should have been better to go there with double the clothes; already you return home with half the clothes. ;-)
user19161
Actually it is better to not go with any clothes, since they will be lost on the way. Then he can save money on clothes.
Plus, it would not make sense to cite a dictionary that say the opposite of what I know.
user19161
I wonder when Windows will have built-in dictionary.
After 10 years passed to chat with an American person, I think I know more American than British. My English classes are a far memory.
user19161
10:59
I read that Windows 8 will have built-in pdf viewer, don't know if that is a deal with Adobe.
@JasperLoy When they will copy from the Mac OS X. :-)
Mac OS X already has a PDF viewer, and applications can also save a file as PDF.
Plus, printing a document, you can save it as PDF.
user19161
OK, well, Microsoft Office 2007 onwards can also save in PDF.
user19161
But for other applications, still need to download PDF converter software.
@JasperLoy Sure, but you have to buy it, first. With the Mac, that is a feature included with the OS.
user19161
But it seems that almost nobody uses PostScript format today, mainly PDF.
user19161
11:03
I guess Mac makes for a better initial experience then. It's quite easy to download all the needed software though, and we get to try different software.
PDF is just a compressed format, with Postscript-like commands.
It's equivalent to EPF, in some way.
After all, both are from Adobe.
user19161
Yes, and flash too. Maybe Microsoft will take over Adobe in a few years. Then flash and PDF viewer will be included by default.
user19161
@kiamlaluno EPF? Do you mean EPS?
@JasperLoy That is the only way Microsoft can do things.
user19161
Anyway on Windows there seems to be only one good way to view PS, and that is using GSview. Only one software for this purpose.
11:07
@JasperLoy I don't know why, but I keep to think of "Encapsulated Postscript File."
user19161
On the other hand there are at least 10 different PDF viewers on Windows.
user19161
EPS is a standard format for images. The bounding box always give problems I think.
user19161
I never played with SVG though.
@JasperLoy Yeah, but Windows doesn't have a way to hook scripts to the printing process, nor to show a menu where third-party software can add a menu item to preprocess the printing items.
user19161
@kiamlaluno OK sounds like Mac is superior, but also more expensive. Ubuntu is trying to copy Mac, even the colour and wallpaper is purple all the time.
user19161
11:12
I think they should stop copying and start doing what they feel like.
user19161
While Linux is the free equivalent of Mac, ReactOS would be the free equivalent of Windows. But the project is just a hobby and I think it will not come to fruition in our lifetime.
@JasperLoy That is true for everybody; I don't like when they copy from each other.
user19161
I think very few people have heard of reactos.
It makes me feel as if an OS is just a matter of fashion.
@JasperLoy I have heard of it.
user19161
And also very few people know that Microsoft already has free antivirus, namely Microsoft Security Essentials. Check it out.
11:15
hello to you both
user19161
@simchona Boo!
@JasperLoy Eep!
@JasperLoy I started to use it before it was included in the Windows updates. :-)
SU is back, by the way
user19161
11:16
@kiamlaluno stackunderblow
Super…Uber?
user19161
Problematic user.
@JasperLoy Is that like sneezing?
@kiamlaluno What Jasper said
user19161
@kiamlaluno Then you are quite in touch with technological developments. Before that I used AVG, Avira, or Avast.
11:17
I use Avira now
user19161
@kiamlaluno I think he meant it as a pun on the word stackoverflow.
@JasperLoy Well, I was looking for a free antivirus, and I found it. I was using the antivirus application from Microsoft, before they stopped to support it.
user19161
@simchona I recommend MSE, since they made Windows.
@JasperLoy Considering that it's his username, I would think the pun is about himself. :-)
@JasperLoy i'll look into it
user19161
11:20
By the way, the stupid thing about Windows Defender in Vista is that you need to turn it off otherwise it will conflict with antivirus. Sometimes installing an antivirus will automatically turn it off thoug.
A username is your name on the web; if somebody chooses "stackunderblow," I think he is communicating something about himself.
Should it be on topic to ask people to formulate sentences?
user19161
Anyway as long as I use firefox, I think I am quite safe even without antivirus. I don't use any antivirus though on Linux, not necessary.

StackUnderblowSome people do me a big favour. What should I ask them after their help ? I have tried to ask directly like this What would you like me to do to pay back what I owe you ? What would you like me to do to make it up for you ? I can only think up two such ways to ask them, I am not sure if...

Talking of posts, I have to discover who is taking away votes on my posts, on DA.
user19161
11:23
@simchona His accept rate is 10 per cent. His standards must be very high. Maybe he has a PhD in English.
@kiamlaluno DA?
I feel like asking this in Meta
user19161
@kiamlaluno You mean someone is downvoting you on Drupal?
@simchona Drupal Answers?
user19161
@simchona OK if you want. I think it is alright if OP asks about something specific and gives some examples he comes up with himself.
11:25
@JasperLoy No; somebody removed the vote casted on my answer, and accepted another answer after days he selected my answer.
user19161
@kiamlaluno Isn't that OK? No revenge involved.
That make a total of 20 removed from my reputation. If that keeps going, I guess something is wrong.
user19161
@kiamlaluno I thought it is 15?
@JasperLoy That depends on why you do it. If you do it because I edited your post, that was not clear, then it is revenge.
@JasperLoy It is 15 for accepting another post, and 5 for removing the vote on a question of mine.
I was not being precise.
user19161
@kiamlaluno If it is the same user on a lot of posts maybe there is a problem. If it is different users then it is a story for Twilight Zone.
11:29
@JasperLoy It's the OS that makes you safe from viruses, not the browser. I remember the XP virus that shut down Windows all times you would connect to Internet. My cousin got it.
@JasperLoy Or it's a plot. :-)
Frankly, I find suspicious that happened in the same day.
Now, Mac OS X uses sand-boxing for applications; who creates the application can decide the operations that the application can do, and the application is signed. It is rather difficult for an application to alter another one, and make it do operations it should not do.
I mean, Mac OS X 10.7.
I am planning to replace my MacMini.
(I have doomed the room, it seems.)
did Jasper disappear?
I did nothing!
You and your magic powers.
Well, once they were not called powers. :-)
The plot is getting thicker.
Before they make votes vanish, and then they start with people.
11:45
gasp
We must get garlic! And silver bullets!
The next step will be countries.
I don't like Antarctica. Can you do something about that?
@simchona You forgot those wooden things.
Stakes.

Q: What are the different nuances of "passing with distinction" in a CV?

slhckI am in the middle of translating my (German) CV to English. In the German/Austrian school system, there is the notion of passing ... ... "mit gutem Erfolg" (which is better than average, yet not the best you can achieve, roughly translating to "good success") ... "mit ausgezeichnetem Erfolg" ...

@simchona I said "countries"; let's not make a step longer than the leg. :-)
11:47
@kiamlaluno Oh, my bad. How about...I'm not sure I can pick a country without people saying I'm racist or something
@simchona As long as he provided the equivalent words for English, I would think it's on-topic.
If he would have left us to guess what those German words mean, then it would be different. As the question is, I see it as just asking what words should be used in English, and he made the context clear.
Where is Cerby?
I'm not sure.
I NARQed this one though:

@kiamlaluno On which questions?
@simchona It could be off-topic too, in someway.
@simchona Three out of five are answers from A.Uysal.
11:58
@kiamlaluno You can't see names on the flags?
@simchona No, I can't see names because I am not a moderator; if I were able to see them, then I could not share that information.
Because I'll say it was probably me.
@simchona Well, I can say that whoever was, I agree with that user.
I can justify it if you want.
@kiamlaluno Well then, thank you.
@simchona There is no need to justify them. Without reading the answers, it seemed like a revenge against the user. I mean, I thought "who can give such bad answers that are flagged as not an answer?"
Now, I know the answer. :-)
12:06
@kiamlaluno Oh! Yes, it could be seen that way. I see what you mean
user19161
@simchona Yes I just ate dinner with my mum!
@simchona I think that everybody can have their own opinion; the important is they are sincere, and they don't hide a revenge act behind excuses.
user19161
@kiamlaluno Maybe afternoon siesta.
@kiamlaluno No revenge. I think the user means well but...not helpful all the time.
@JasperLoy That would have a long siesta. I mean, with 3 heads, that is not a normal siesta.
user19161
12:09
@kiamlaluno Of course, upvote and downvote doesn't mean correct or wrong, it just means agree or disagree. After all, what is "right" and "wrong"?
user19161
@kiamlaluno With 3 heads he needs more rest!
@simchona I know it was not revenge.
@JasperLoy Those are the votes on meta. On the main site, it means "this answer is not useful."
user19161
@kiamlaluno OK you know what I mean, Iwas talking about the main site actually.
user19161
First person to get swag must announce it!
Argh. The OP of the Germanic examples question doesn't seem to understand why I downvoted. Or voted to close.
12:13
I don't think it means useful to who read the answer; differently, a super-expert should down-vote all the answers because he already knows all. It would be practically impossible for him to find anything useful.
user19161
I find that when I talk (in real life or in chat) to a person with a certain style I subconsciously assimilate it too. Could be accent, syntax etc.
The CV one?
@JasperLoy I hope you don't assimilate mine.
@kiamlaluno No, the "give me examples of Germanic something or other'
@simchona Yes, I noticed it.

@Kiamaluno--on a streak against that tag, I see
I wish I had fans? Or should that be "I wish I had fun"?
user19161
@simchona Nvm you are a bit slow today.
@JasperLoy It's 2.30am. I think I can be slow right now
@kiamlaluno Depends on what you think your life needs.
user19161
12:23
@simchona So do you know who now?
@JasperLoy Yup.
@simchona That makes a difference of 12 hours from here.
I guess if that means Australia. :-)
@kiamlaluno What time is it in Australia?
user19161
@simchona It's not the same one as the other day though.
@simchona I guess it depends on which gives you votes on a SE site.
12:25
@JasperLoy Well. Now I'm confused again. But I think I get it. I think. Maybe.
@simchona I dunno; I was once said they are 12 hours ahead of Italy.
user19161
@simchona Since you said the one the other day probably had eight letters. This one only has 6, or 9.
@JasperLoy Or 3
We say la prima gallina che canta ha fatto l'uovo (the first chicken to sing lied the egg).
user19161
@simchona Obviously, since 6+3=9.
12:26
@kiamlaluno I think you may mean "laid"
@JasperLoy Hooray!
@simchona I dunno; I am not a chicken. ;-)
user19161
@kiamlaluno Kiamlaluno sounds like a soft drink.
Is this a dupe?

Q: How do you make the possessive form with "He and I"-style subjects?

rintaunDespite being a native speaker of American English, I cannot find a construction that sounds natural when trying to form a possessive from coordinated subjects including a first person pronoun, like "He and I" or "My brother and I." If it's "You and I," I can just use "our." But what is the prope...

user19161
@kiamlaluno Actually I am a chicken. I am born in the year of the rooster.
We're so special, we get our own time zone
12:28
@simchona I visited Hawai'i once. It was nice.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Which islands?
@JasperLoy Now you will tell me I am a puppy because I was born in the year of the dog.
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I did not know you write it with the apostrophe.
user19161
@kiamlaluno woof woof cluck cluck!
12:29
@JasperLoy I don't always. But I figured I'd try to be polite. :)
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Really? Is that the official way to write it?
@simchona The driver of the airport shuttle that drove us to our hotel was quite pleased to tell us about how the TV show "Dog, The Bounty Hunter" was made in honolulu.
@JasperLoy It's not an apotrophe--it goes the other way, technically
a glottal stop, I think
user19161
Hawaii ( or in English; Hawaiian: Mokuāina o Hawaii) is the newest of the 50 U.S. states (August 21, 1959), and is the only U.S. state made up entirely of islands. It is the northernmost island group in Polynesia, occupying most of an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean, southwest of the continental United States, southeast of Japan, and northeast of Australia. Hawaii’s natural and diverse scenery, warm tropical climate, abundance of public beaches and oceanic surrounding, and active volcanoes make it a popular destination for tourists, surfers, biologists, and volcanologists ...
user19161
Well it is written Hawaii in English.
user19161
12:33
And we speak English here.
@JasperLoy This is the EL&U chat room. Half the time we're speaking anything but English.
@simchona My keyboard doesn't have a glottal stop key.
Actually, joking aside, isn't it fairly common to write a glottal stop with an apostrophe?
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yes, but it's still not an apostrophe by name. Hawaiian doesn't really have an apostrophe
@JasperLoy Can I add a "gobble gobble"?
@simchona And English has several things which resemble the apostrophe but are not really the same thing. It must make for some exciting arguments for certain kinds of people, trying to distinguish between the different symbols in "don't", "John's", "Hawai'i", and "This is 'quoted' text".
Rock'n'roll
12:42
Someone want to help me explain why lists are not constructive?
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Where but here means except. There are many questions on the main site asking about the meaning of but, interestingly.

But here it is not clear what "more" is supposed to mean since "Germanic" is just a linguistic description of the inner working engine ...

@kiamlaluno Aren't those the same as the ones in "don't"?
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yes, but it's from ages that I don't write that phrase, and I wanted to write it.
user19161
There is also Toys 'R' Us.
12:44
@JasperLoy The R should be flipped, in that case.
@JasperLoy Toys 'Я' Us
user19161
General observation: Sometimes the answer that is more complicated gets more upvotes, especially for word or phrase requests. It seems that people think that using big words means good English.
user19161
Another observation: Sometimes the answer with more comments expressing some doubt gets less upvotes. It seems that people think that comments mean the answer is not good.
user19161
Just pointing out some possilbe faulty logic in our thinking...
@MrShinyandNew Thoughts on the question I posted? (Please help close -.-)
user19161
12:47
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Thanks, I was too lazy to figure out how to flip it!
@JasperLoy Windows Character map is my friend. But it's UI sucks.

And hi!
@simchona I'm not sure about list questions. I don't hate them as much as some people.
user19161
@simchona Done, because you say so.
user19161
@Cerberus Boo!
12:49
@Cerberus Today is apostrophopposite day. You ca'n put the'm in where'ver you wan't.
Boo indeed!
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Oh n'o!
user19161
Pirates day is coming. We can take whatever we want.
Pirates day?
I didn't know they had that.
@JasperLoy Did you see the discussion about that recently? We asked lauren to look into pirate-theming the site for Sept 19
@Cerberus Pir'ates day.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 lauren?
12:51
@kiamlaluno damn, I read that with a glottal stop. Pir-ahhtees
user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yes I saw that one.
@kiamlaluno the CHAOS person assigned to this site... I think.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 That was the purpose, to make you read "pir ates day."
@kiamlaluno H'arr!
One more close vote...and it will be gone
12:53
@MrShinyandNew安宇 She doesn't decide anything about theming.
Jin is the designer, but he doesn't do anything if he is not asked to.
@kiamlaluno Not directly. But she's in charge of helping to promote the site, or knows people who are, or something, and she said she'd pass along our request.
Pcr is back.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I don't think that by promoting they mean changing the theme used in a site. :-)
user19161
I know nothing about pirates day. I only read about it here. But in all seriousness I think there's no need to do anything then.
user19161
@simchona Changed his profile too.
12:55
I said his new q is too localized
@kiamlaluno Well, basically, change up the content a bit for special occasions, much like how on April 1st there are often gags or tricks. We thought TLAPD would be a good fit for this stie.
I also flagged an older question by vonjd because it seems off topic now
user19161
Well he took out the "debate me" part knowing that he will lose to me.
user19161
@simchona Done.
@JasperLoy Have I told you lately...that I love you?
user19161
12:58
@simchona Thank you!
@MrShinyandNew安宇 TLAPD = Total Los Angeles Police Department?
I think this is off topic now too:

Q: Where can I find some information on similarities between German and English?

vonjdBoth English and German are Germanic languages. Could you point me to some sources where the similarities of both languages are being examined and exemplified?

user19161
@kiamlaluno LAPD and NYPD are terms I often come across on TV. There seem to be no other police departments.
It's kind of like "what English resources can I use"
@kiamlaluno Talk Like a Pirate Day
13:01
Argh!
@JasperLoy There is also FDNY.
@JasperLoy It's not that there are no other PDs. There are no other cities.
@JasperLoy HPD: Hawaii Five-0
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Oh, TLaPD.
@simchona So that Q seems to be off-topic but meanwhile it has received 12 upvotes
13:02
@MrShinyandNew安宇 It's old, and I think early enough that opinions were different
Now, it got bumped to the front page and I think its OT
@kiamlaluno I don't feel constrained to leave out, or lower-case, my articles when I make acronyms. :)
@MrShinyandNew安宇 GLaDOS
@simchona ok, you convinced me. voted.
@simchona That is Spanish for glad.
@kiamlaluno But...the cake is a lie
user19161
13:04
@simchona Done.
@simchona The cake is done, once I passed nearby.
user19161
@kiamlaluno It is done since I keep saying done. :)
@JasperLoy I am faster to eat it. :-)
@kiamlaluno Then you just ate a lie.
user19161
Next time no need to cook your food. Just stare at it and keep saying done.

13:06
Well, I should sleep
g'night all
By the way, was it a New York cheesecake?
user19161
@simchona Night!
user19161
@kiamlaluno Maybe Los Angeles cheesecake. One type for each police department.
@JasperLoy I prefer a cheesecase New York style; I like it better.
user19161
@kiamlaluno OK, I prefer tiramisu cheesecake.
13:09
The second place is taken by the "up-side down" cake.
@JasperLoy I prefer the real tiramisù.
user19161
@kiamlaluno Me too, I think.
I wonder how much people understand the meaning of tirami sù, in Italian.
@kiamlaluno So what is it supposed to mean?
user19161
@kiamlaluno Honestly, I don't know. What does it really mean?
user19161
Google says "me up".
user19161
13:13
Maybe it means it gets me high.
Well, literally it means "take me up."
Tirame = pull me?
Sù = up?
It could be something said from who has fallen.
Funny, never thought about that.
It does make sense.
user19161
And even those who did not fall can eat it.
user19161
13:14
And get even higher.
It could also be used figuratively, as in "this thing is so good that takes me up."
Sure, makes sense.
@JasperLoy There is alcohol in it, so you could get drunk if you eat enough of it!
Maybe it should be "pulls me up."
user19161
@Cerberus Yes I ate it a few times before!
user19161
tiramisu and spaghetti carbonara, ah!
13:16
All mixed in a bob bowl?
user19161
Separate of course.
@kiamlaluno Is tira third person singular indicative?
NO.
I mean uh hi.
user19161
Haha.
Uh hi!
13:17
@Cerberus It could be also the second person singular for the imperative.
Ah!
That's how I subconsciously read it.
Lascia me.
user19161
@mana Do you like tiramisu?
I should have said "jussive mood."
@Cerberus That is what lasciami means.
@JasperLoy Can't say I've ever tried it.
user19161
@Manaಠдಠ How about spaghetti carbonara?
13:20
Lasciami is the preferred way to write it, even if I would debate that in ordinary Italian, you would say mollami if it's meant figuratively.
Mollami would mean "leave me alone."
Uh...no, can't say I've tried that one either.
user19161
OK I am sure you had hamburgers before.
Aahm… burgers.
user19161
I am bored by McDonald's. Burger King is better, but too expensive.
user19161
13:22
Of course, their burgers are bigger and juicier.
@kiamlaluno Right, I even got that wrong. But the -a was right!
user19161
Mushroom Swiss is my favourite.
@Cerberus It is right, but if you say that nobody would take you are Italian. :-)
user19161
Torna a Surriento.
That is pretty Neapolitan.
user19161
13:24
@kiamlaluno Same as O sole mio.
@JasperLoy No; O sole mio is Italian, but in Italian the town name is Sorrento.
user19161
Also know Funiculi funicula.
@kiamlaluno Probably! But the few bits of Italian I know mostly come from operas anyway!
That is another Neapolitan word.
user19161
@kiamlaluno Oh thanks, I meant that I thought they were Neapolitan folk songs.
13:27
@Cerberus I can imagine you saying il nome mio nessun saprà. :-)
user19161
@kiamlaluno e noi dovrem ahime morir morir
user19161
Dilegua o notte tramontate stelle
user19161
tramontate stelle all'alba vincero
@kiamlaluno That word order sound poetical!
user19161
Vincero, vincero!
13:28
That is a well known aria, isn't it?
@JasperLoy They are; I was speaking of the words. :-)
user19161
@Cerberus Nessun Dorma, from Turandot by Puccini.
@Cerberus "Il mio destino è chiuso in me… il nome mio nessun saprà… all'alba vincerò… vincerò…"
user19161
Tenor aria that ends in a high B.
@JasperLoy Ah, of course.
13:31
@Cerberus Yeah, saying the possessive adjective after the noun it is referring to is not quite normal, but it is used in some dialects: mammata means mamma tua in Calabrian.
user19161
That is similar to zieta, ziema, patrima and patrita.
Those mean "your aunt," "my aunt," "my father," and "your father."
@kiamlaluno Coo. And how about putting the object first, then the subject, then the verb, as in that same line?
