6:06 PM
@nosmoking LOL

@JasperLoy the tubes are for colds or rhinopharyngites, but I'll use them as a portable nose cleanser

@nosmoking So when is your math course going to start?

@JasperLoy For the moment, I've a bit given up on it, and searching jobs in computer science

@nosmoking OK. If you are not ready to study, it is better not to start yet. Do something else, like a job.

@JasperLoy yes thanks for advise, I feel I'm in a weird state, I need to do something
my arms are heavy, sometimes it's hard to work, move, read

6:19 PM
@nosmoking I feel the same. I have been jobless for seven years. These seven years, I have been struggling with severe mental problems.

I wish you deviate from this vicious spiral, like me

I am trying to. It is difficult.

maybe working is a solution, even a not-too-intellectual job
that's what I'm thinking for me, even if I want to act smartly in the job

I am not in need of money now, and I think a job now might make me worse.

with my studies, I must do something intellectual of course, but you know, development sometimes is not so intellectual

6:22 PM
But I am always thinking about the future.

I'm not in need of money as well, I've worked 4 years and saved almost 90% of the salary

I think nosmoking is a very good name for you, you should keep it.

but working, doing something is maybe a solution, or maybe that's because I'm in a weird post-treatment state
@JasperLoy I want it in real life, like Nosmoking Man a superhero fighting smokers with waterguns

I am trying to stabilise my thoughts so that I can start studying math on my own next year.

you need a shock maybe, a trip, new friends
going at the university and talking to people

6:25 PM
Yes, maybe trying some sex would do me good too.

of course, with an intellectual girl, the best

Did you ever have a girlfriend?

@JasperLoy once, not long enough for sex, and a few wanted to, but I was immature and clumsy, so I refused
however now I'm ready

@nosmoking OK. I never had one, lol.

@JasperLoy I just kissed her, nothing more actually, and I was clumsy I guess, without even appreciating this moment

6:28 PM
@nosmoking OK. Germany is my number one choice for rebirth, and France is number two.

I may like singapour at the opposite :), hope I won't have the island syndrome

I am currently targeting to solve all my mental problems by the end of next year.

I've lived 10 years in Martinique (west Indies) actually from 2 to 12

I have said that for many years, because every year my mind is just still too confused.
@nosmoking It is extremely clean. Chewing gum is not sold here.

@JasperLoy that's why I said you need a shock, to break this routine
@JasperLoy hehe, I've nothing against people throwing chewing gums, or even spitting, just the smell of smoke disgust me

6:31 PM
I only started seeing a doctor for medicine last year. I have not tried any psychotherapy yet.

but that's great, I like it
@JasperLoy can I ask you the medicine name?
mine is Xeplion

However, I have been suffering since I was 18. I am almost 33 now.

my old bro always said (for joking) that I was autist, he was maybe right

@nosmoking I have taken haloperidol, chlorpromazine, clonezapam, fluvoxamine at different times. Now I am just taking clomipramine.

ok, alwways fixing neurotransmitters
I've a cool book on brain hemispheres, and the asymetry of brain, but I feel like you can't act on it, only powerful medics can

6:34 PM
There was once I threw away all my books because I wanted to start afresh. I now only have eight math books.
@nosmoking Have you seriously thought about what you want to do for the rest of your life?

@JasperLoy I think I'll be a developper
like @JohanLarsson
a mechanic of the web

@nosmoking I hope to be a mathematician.

@JasperLoy with teaching?

@nosmoking Yes, something like that.

you can teach young children, it doesn't require so much diploma, but you'd better pass the higher ones

6:38 PM
No, I don't like children. I prefer teaching high school kids or undergrads.

yea, me too
>18

I was a teacher for a while before I quit.

yep you told me, did it go well? with your students?

I am very sad my life has turned out this way. When I look back at all the things lost, I just cannot understand why this has to happen to me.
@nosmoking No, they were very naughty, and I could not manage their behaviour, that is one of the reasons I quit.

@JasperLoy sometimes I'm angry about my parents :/, they have (I think) some OCDs too, about various things

6:40 PM
@nosmoking I blame my father for most of my problems.

@JasperLoy really why?

He has done many things to hurt me. He made me go mad.
Without him, I would not go mad. Maybe I would have won the Fields medal by now, lol.
Anyway, I am living with my mum only now.

hmm, that may be reasons of your trauma, your dad and your first job
you need to reconciliate with those one by one, like me, I've smelt different smoke, and accepting smokers if they are > 5 meters of me

@nosmoking You can email me if you want. jasperloy at outlook dot com.

k, better than spamming this room :s

6:43 PM
Tell me your real name in email too.
I just wanted to make sure I keep in touch with you.

I'll send you my resume

We can still talk in this room, and share our secrets via email.
@nosmoking I am leaving this chat now, bye.

I've not many secrets, I even think of telling my employers about my "smoke OCD" so they know it in advance
@JasperLoy bye
who else is schizo here :)) ? (sorry for the above 'spam', it can be deleted if a mod wants)
[schizophrenia.se]
meh, violent movies
it's about her brain who were made better, I don't believe in it, above all with such violence

7:44 PM

7:54 PM
Another brick in the brain

@nosmoking What time is it there?

21:55
same in Germany

Ah, I am 6 hours ahead of you.

one 1/4th of day

I think schizophrenia se is too narrow. Maybe mental illness se?

7:58 PM
yea, just [psychology.se], [medics.se]
Paris-Singapour might be long by plane, though, 8hours maybe (not taking timezone into account)
I've done Paris-Beijing in March 2008
yea, it's 13 h 15 min, so 7 hours of pure flight, 6 hours of timezone

Wow, you edited the last 4 lines, looks cool.

I keep editing, that's one of my OCD I guess, my brain decision area isn't so well

The chat has fewer people during weekends.

fewer fuhrer fever
for 500€ I can do to Singapour

My lecturer told me that I should apply to about 10 places for grad school. That would cost about 1000 USD I think.
I think I will like California. I was thinking of doing something crazy: apply to all 10 University of California's and nothing else.

8:10 PM
Berkeley, Stanford, CalTech

@nosmoking What movie is that? I don't want to click on it.
@MattЭллен Are you interested in it?

@JasperLoy A movie my parents just went to look, I didn't because I'm sckeptic on the quality, Luc Besson is the maker, he made the 5th element, Leon the professionnal, etc.., but always violent films, with guns
@JasperLoy nah, it's for me

@JasperLoy yes, but I thought it would be a place you could ask about schizophrenia

I was looking at a SE place for mental stuff

8:16 PM
> If you have questions about ...

> Cognitive science
> Psychology (e.g., cognitive, social, developmental, biological, applied, clinical, organizational, etc.)

sounds like a good fit

Yes, indeed. Maybe I should join too, lol.

yes

Q: Grammar of 'Meaning' and as in 'meaning of life

De JavaThere is something about the term 'meaning' that is eluding me (and seems to have eluded many of humanities 'best' minds) as in 'what is the meaning of life'. The 'question' seems to lack a necessary object viz: To us, you, god, life etc and it seems to relate to the term 'meaning in some charac...

This should be nuked.
We have been mistaken for Philosophy, lol.

I've read a book on the right and left brain, and how functions are really separated, and now that I think about it, 4 years ago, I started holding my mouse with left hand (right-handed) for balancing efforts, and writing a bit with my left hand, it coincides with when I started to be isolated and schizophrenic. There may be an effect, this is a good fit to ask it in [CognitiveSciences.se]

8:24 PM
Ah, I use my left hand to write all the time. But I write almost nothing these days.

@JasperLoy and you're right-handed too?

@nosmoking No, I mean I am left handed.

oh ok, that's normal so, writing is a good activity also, I should do it more than typing

I mostly do typing these days, on the computer.
I wonder what will happen if the world changes to another keyboard, one that has A,B,C in alphabetical order.

All of us typists will be stuffed.
Or we typists.
Anyway, no good will come of it.

8:32 PM
it would be impractical

I've used something with an on-screen keyboard like that, but I can't remember what it was.

me too

I think all countries should become one big country with the same set of laws and the same language.

I didn't like it. Nothing was where it should be.

Does typing modify our brain, I mean when we trained it for writing by hand before

8:34 PM
@JasperLoy Are you a fan of Star Trek?

@AndrewLeach Nope, but I know John Lennon has the same idea.

The problem is both hand type, so both brain hemisphere are used, a problem since for writing only one is needed

@JasperLoy Er, sorry to break bad news, but I think that's had the same idea.

@AndrewLeach Yes, I noticed the typo, but wanted to give him eternal life.

Mm. Right.

8:37 PM
@nosmoking I use my right hand for table tennis, but I am not good at it.

Apparently Nosmo King was English. I didn't know that.

@JasperLoy I can use both, did you receive my email?
@AndrewLeach really?

I should put up a pic of myself, but I am too fat now, so I will wait.

H. Vernon Watson (1886–1952), better known as his character Nosmo King, was a popular English variety artist. He was touring the music halls before World War I, but he remained relatively obscure until the 1920s, when he shot to fame as Nosmo King. == Early years == Coming from a rural background near Peterborough, Watson showed a leaning towards things theatrical and it was evident that he had a rare talent for mimicry. In 1911, he turned professional, using his real name, doing impressions of the leading comedians of the day. Then, when Frank Tinney, the American black-faced comedian, came to...

@nosmoking I think I replied to it.

8:39 PM
@JasperLoy what's your weight? I've gained 5 kg recently due to medics
@AndrewLeach excellent

@nosmoking I went from 60kg to 70kg the past year.

@JasperLoy exactly like me
but I'm 1m83
from 54kg to 70kg

I am only 1.65m, so I am overweight.

nah, it's fine

I've managed to lose two stone since October.

8:41 PM
70/(1.65*1.65) = 25.71
between 18 and 25 it's "normal", after it's overweight
after 30 it's obese I think

Americans are very fat.

BMI gets complicated doing everything in Imperial measurements.

@AndrewLeach what is it in a International unit?
ahhh brits

I've lost 29lbs = 13kg

@AndrewLeach Wow. Isn't there somewhere you could pick up new ones?

8:44 PM
stones are for life, not just for rolling

I'm sure I could find a supermarket. But actually I'm not sorry to have mislaid them.

@JasperLoy Jasper Loy is your real name?

@nosmoking Yes, it is.

@nosmoking Is your real name H. Vernon Watson?

@JasperLoy I'm careful, because the chat transcript is graved in the rock, and served to google
@AndrewLeach :)) the king of Nosmo

8:46 PM
What? I thought it was Jason Bourne.

@nosmoking Ah, yes, but it's OK since I did not kill anyone.

At least not in self-defense.

@nosmoking I thought you had no secrets.

@MattЭллен Bother. I've lost a couple.

@JasperLoy at least my name, maybe

8:48 PM
@nosmoking OK. There are a few people with my name in the world.

@JasperLoy and not many with mine, in google I'm alone with this name

@nosmoking OK. It's fine as long as you did not kill anyone.

@nosmoking Which name? Nosmoking, or your real name?

@AndrewLeach real name
@JasperLoy yes, but well, I wouldn't care so much to tell it anyway, I just don't want to have it associated ith all the shit I'm saying
by Google

Your first name is fairly easy to find.

8:52 PM
I am very sad. I think about all the things I have lost. If only I did not go mad.

Or at least, what I guess is your first name. It seems quite reasonably a first name.

The coolness that water can bring When you’re sweltering and need cooling Is such a relief It beggars belief It really is quite the best thing

@JasperLoy I'm like you thinking about past and future, but that's the wrong way to do it

@StackExchange Second line :-(

8:54 PM
The coolness that water can bring
When you’re sweltering and need cooling
Is such a relief
It beggars belief
It really is quite the best thing
Is the 4th line worrect?

Yes.

beggar is a noun I think

Oh, I am not sure if it can be a verb too.

it seems so

8:57 PM
Reduce (someone) to poverty:
why should I beggar myself for you?

@AndrewLeach We'll have to form the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Stones

@MattЭллен No, no: I want to lose them.

@nosmoking read further down for the idiom

It's really only used in beggars belief.

9:00 PM
> Those of the left claimed that naive women were seduced into becoming avaricious consumers, beggaring their families.
> Now if it could be shown that beggaring rich people inevitably enriches poor people there might be something to say for a crusade against inequality.

Yes, it does mean make a beggar of, but beggar belief is a fixed idiom.

@AndrewLeach ok

It's related.
Belief is in severe lack.

it ruins belief

Hm. There is a severe lack of belief.

9:03 PM
and self-belief too

further down on that very same page
> Phrases

> beggar belief (or description)
> Be too extraordinary to be believed or described: a disregard for common sense which beggars belief

oh right, I was too lazy to look lower

Tch. What's the point...?!

> It beggars belief that a group of local councillors can really believe there is any merit in this option.

Yes. Although using belief/believe like that is infelicitous.

9:05 PM
> Although the inadequate measures to deal with the problem beggar belief, what is even more incredible is the mentality of a farmer or a householder who will dispose of their rubbish by dumping it into the nearest river.
As an ecologist, I like it

I think I'd change it rather more radically. "...can find any merit in this option"

even better
