@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But Rob Ford's criminal antics are so ludicrous, I can't help but find him almost endearing.
@tchrist It would be funny in Plato wrote The Republic and then Republic, Lost.
@TheodoreBroda And Milton missed the mark.
@TheodoreBroda It'd be endearing if he were actually a useful mayor by any measure.
@tchrist I thought that $1,000/pill was already regular for U.S. pharmaceutical companies. Ridiculous prices for medications are nothing new.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Hey, having a politician that does nothing but smoke crack and get drunk still sounds better than having a politician that actively implements terrible policies. At least when he is passed out drunk, he can't make any policies, let alone bad ones.
02:23
@TheodoreBroda It's not that he does nothing. That's part of it. He also obstructs progress. Cuts things that don't need cutting. All of his ideas that involve spending are bad. really bad.
Like, one year, he and his brother (a city councillor) decided to scrap the waterfront-renewal plan (in progress for decades) for a single-sourced deal with a foreign developer. The keystone of the plan? A ferris-wheel, and a monorail.
@TheodoreBroda Oh, he goes to the office drunk. Or, gets drunk there.
Anyway, when his major new idea was something that was already thoroughly mocked by the Simpsons (in one of their best episodes ever), it seemed pretty clear that he was going to be the worst mayor ever.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes, he won the title of worst mayor ever in a landslide. I just hope he doesn't win another term as well. The more terrible a politician is, the more likely to be elected, it seems. I had just assumed he did nothing, that's how the media made it sound.
@TheodoreBroda it's not looking like he will be re-elected. But there are some nutjobs who still support him. It's mind-boggling.
right now he's in "rehab"
which is to say, he's at the cottage, pretending to be in rehab
strange women (i.e. not his wife) are leaving stuff in his room at the "Rehab" and then "borrowing" his car and driving drunk.
he's being spotted in various cottage towns running errands.
etc.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Rob Ford doesn't need to be affiliated with any political organizations, because wherever he is, he's always in a party. He should run on a ticket with Anthony Weiner, with the slogan "Two Wrongs Make A Right".
@TheodoreBroda lol
He was recently recorded as saying that he couldn't support our right-wing provincial party on account of their leader was present at the gay flag raising.
of course, at this point, he's so toxic that no parties want his support
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Maybe in a drunken stupor, he'll try to ban rainbows from the sky for being "too gay".
02:37
@TheodoreBroda luckily, when he's in a drunken stupor, he's so stupefied that he can't really form coherent sentences. Or, he speaks in Jamaican Patois.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 You be kiddin', mon!
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I can't believe that he is actually mayor. It seems like a clip from a bad comedy film!
@TheodoreBroda It's not even the worst video of him.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Having lived in Kingston, Jamaica for three years, I can assure you that "bumbaclot" is very offensive.
02:49
@TheodoreBroda Ford more years!
That's his slogan
election's in Nov.
gods I can't wait to be rid of his buffoonery
I'm ready to vote for any asshole at all if it means denying Ford the victory.
Anyway I'm outta here. later folks
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I'm fine with his buffoonery, so long as it is out of public office. He's so entertaining, I hope he gets his own reality TV program after he is removed from office.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 You can't af-Ford another term.
Evening.
@Mahnax Good evening to you, as well.
03:06
@tchrist Yeah, at least they raise the issue of those ridiculous pharma patents.
Criminal, one might say.
I think we often pay the full price for medicines.
Recently there was debate about a cancer medicine that cost € 50.000 or so a year. That's $67,000.
The state was considering to scrap it from insurance.
But it didn't happen, so insurers have to cover it.

@tchrist I thought that $1,000/pill was already regular for U.S. pharmaceutical companies. Ridiculous prices for medications are nothing new.
@TheodoreBroda Actually, it is*kind of new. In the very late 70s, a drug manufacturer came out with an outstanding new treatment for endometriosis. It was a game changer, and I mean, an absolute a godsend in the treatment of a painful and destructive disease. Women who had to have hysterectomies were able to take a *pill instead, and many were able to conceive afterwards (an inconceivable event before treatment.)
The cost was $100/day (4 pills, if I recall correctly) for 6-12 months. There was a furor in the medical community unlike I'd ever seen before. If I'm remembering correctly (I'm not sure I am) the government made the pharm company decrease it's prices.
Many years (decades) passesd before a medication of this cost appeared on the market.
hi
I'm back
@TheodoreBroda You are growing up in a time where drug companies are out of control. Blame your legislators, who accept bribes and listen to lobbyists. But it wasn't always that way. (My $.02) For all the greed involved in Big Pharma, they have made lives immeasurably better. At far, far less than $1000 per pill.

Q: Largest number in ten bytes of code

YpnypnYour goal is to print (to the standard output) the largest number possible, using just ten characters of code. You may use any features of your language, except built-in exponentiation functions. Similarly, you may not use scientific notation to enter a number. (Thus, no 9e+99.) The program m...

That nonsense site still exists, eh.

how about "not realistic"
Seriously, why ten? Why not nine, eleven, twenty-three or 156?
It is completely arbitrary.
You can ask literally thousands of questions like that, per hour.

A: Is there a single word that describes "burying your head in the sand"?

Pete WilsonNot an answer, I think, but "passive-aggressive" is a personality trait that often expresses itself as you say.

This should be deleted. It's not an answer, and the guy admits it, and it's totally wrong. Who cares if the OP accepted it? It should go.
@RegDwigнt I thought you Euro-whatevers preferred 10-based measurements.
@Robusto yes, but in base 11.
09:02
Can I get it in chains and perches?
it's 11 rods per cup
While I have you both here, is there some prohibition against deleting an answer like the above?
I don't know. I would assume that you can't delete an accepted answer
what about my opinion :(
@MattЭллен Then why is there a delete button?
@skullpatrol You too. I didn't realize you were still here.
09:04
oh, well, if there is one, I guess it's OK. I don't see one as I haven't reached 20K yet
@MattЭллен Wut? You slacker, you.
Go ahead and delete it to see what happens.
@Robusto yes, the whole question needs to be deleted.
experiment with the system
imo
09:07
@Robusto hey, man, that's... oh you know, whatever.
@RegDwigнt It is possible, though, to delete an accepted answer independently?
it's better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission
@Robusto Mods can delete anything.
I know. But the question is, the answer was accepted and a delete button appeared. So it seems logical that even an accepted answer can be deleted without mod intervention.
Oh, then you know more than I do.
09:09
Unless there's a bug in the system.
I can't check which buttons/links trusted users get.
do you have the correct poké ball with which to capture a wild delete button?
You should get out your Big Book of Question and Answer Management and have a look.
@Robusto you had me at big.
09:11
You're easy.
That is what I'm saying.
Like Sunday morning.
I'm just agreeing.
I'm just checking the calendar.
I think even the poster of the answer themselves can't delete their accepted answer.
You do it to yourself

Q: Can an intelligent man be upset?

MargusIt is fairly common to grasp the concept of an upset woman, for example: People seem to get upset when things do not go as they expect and usually resolve it with acts of childish behavior. By the standards of questions like that one, I'm a frickin' Einstein.
agreed
10:27
I am troubled by Shog's comment that this chat is unhelpful and full of drama
I don't get that impression, but I'm on the inside
everyone is entitled to their opinion, imo :-)
yeah, but Shog's opinion is weighty
and he implied that that's what the community team thinks, not just him
I never see the community team in here, so.
of course he wants us think that he has the majority opinion...
but why would he want us to think that we're no good?
10:33
People here help other people well beyond the scope of the site, and the last bit of drama that I remember was the Kosmo incident.
there was the Jez drama two days ago
I suppose it depends on what you call drama
I missed out on that one. I read it on meta.
It's but one incident.
people like to make others feel inferior in my experience
Who cares, Rob got suspended easily half a dozen times and there was zero drama about that.
@MattЭллен Where? Where? I like drama.
10:34
I can easily name any number of other chats where people would be getting out the pitchforks.
Well, I can think of a few things I'd call melodramatic happening here
The time Jasper started to stalk Sim
Stuff that happened with David Wallace
Oh that. Two years ago.
don't forget me
oh that was in the math room sorry
See, I'm an in chat every single day and I don't feel involved in any of that at all. So I wouldn't call that drama happening here. That's drama happening to some particular people that would happen anywhere else.
except that it (apparently) doesn't happen anywhere else
10:37
the old owner wanted be exiled for life :(
@MattЭллен "Stuff and nonsense" does not even begin to describe that theory.
@Alraxite well, the comment I'm referering to
I mean, have you been to the Internet? Like, once?
You already knew everything you needed to know, @Jez... Such as the fact that I've yet to see EL&U's chatroom come up in conversation except as part of exactly this sort of pointless drama. Y'all are a tiny minority that causes a vastly disproportionate amount of trouble for, so far as I can tell, exactly zero benefit to the actual site with which you're associated. Until you change that, I'm unlikely to be particularly sympathetic toward these complaints. — Shog9 ♦ yesterday
@RegDwigнt sorry, I cut myself off
I meant "it doesn't happen anywhere else as much as it does here"
and by anywhere else, I'm constraining that to the SE chat system
@MattЭллен I see enough flags on any given day to know for a fact that is not true.
10:39
they are just jealous of our chat
@RegDwigнt yes. I like that this place is laid back. I do worry that we can get a bit too anti-religous at time. or at least we used to. I don't feel that way as often.
@MattЭллен I only find the "y'all" bit strange, but other than that it is directed squarely at one particular person, so shrug.
Yeah. I did wonder if it was just directed at Jez.
@RegDwigнt - may I ask you something in private?
Well, I don't have a phone number if that's what you mean.
10:43
:-0
lol
@RegDwigнt How do you not have a phone number?
@Alraxite by trying really hard and then succeeding.
The order is important.
0800CALLREGGYD
:16160211 I don't want to share! :-) That's why I said "private." :)
is that^ a hot line?
10:44
It's a luke warm one
@MattЭллен cute!
Actually people are trying to get me to go out on a bike ride so I'm a bit in the middle of fighting them off right now.
a luke warm line doesn't sound the same
Is anyone else a little bit concerned (not my question for Reg, btw) that Yoichi Oichi has not answered the questionnaire?
10:48
I don't know if he knows about it
FracturedRetina hasn't either.
yet he can become a moderator, isn't that correct?
Is that a cause for concern at all?
He has participated in meta before, so maybe he just hasn't had time to answer the questionnaire
@medica what kind of concern?
10:51
He has been active on his most recent question, though. I saw he posted a couple of hours ago (I'm engaged in the comment thread).
I don't know him as well as you (all) do, as I've only been here 6 months.
But I have a sense that he doesn't use the mod tools, for one.
well, I wouldn't say I know him. But I'm not concerned that he hasn't answered the questionnaire. There's no polite way to get him to see that he should participate.
I don't know. It is a strange situation that a mod candidate would not participate in the election questionnaire for whatever reason.
@medica You have a really large number of helpful flags.
And you've been here for only six months.
@Alraxite thank you. I do use the mod tools a lot, and the huge amount of spam lately has everyone's flag count up!
@medica It's not something that worries me. Are you worried that he's not getting a fair chance to represent himself?
10:58
The helpful flag counts look really arbitrary. You'd think they'd have some pattern with the amount of time a user has been here.
@MattЭллен No, I think it's actually a disadvantage to express oneself. In that way, people know where you stand. I don't know where he stands on issues. Which is why I started by saying I don't know him.
@Alraxite It really is a measure of how interactive one is on the site.
@terdon - hi!
@MattЭллен Maybe people who have been here for a long time know where he stands on issues.
Maybe he is on the fence.
@medica I just don't understand what you mean by worrying, that's all. Yoichi is a person who likes to ask good questions. that all I know about him. That and he's decided to run for Mod.
@MattЭллен I'm not worried worried, I'm a little bit concerned.
OK. I don't understand why. I feel like I'm missing something.
but don't worry about it. explaining things to me can sometimes be a pain
11:05
@MattЭллен I'm not challenging his right or reasons to run for mod. Maybe it's not worth mentioning.
But it was a good picture ')
@medica Studies have shown that human brain is gender specific (ex: goo.gl/fdsJdE ) and thus are emotions. Females brains areas dedicated to reason under perform (up to decade and is some cases more) and it is social acceptable for them to act childish. Term I am looking to translate is "endast väljas"("feeling frustrated, bitterness and indignation due to recent events causing him/her to reflect in disappointment of itself sense of awareness" what simplifies to "upset"). With my +10 years of English experience I have never seen connection 'an upset man'->'high mental capacity'. — Margus 5 mins ago
Why can't a mod remind Yoichi to do the questionnaire?
Can this guy be for real?!?
The world is large
11:13
I asked a mod, who answered that it was an unfamiliar situation. he/she/they/no one/other did not know what to do.
Is Yoichi the only one? Also, he may be taking a lot of time to compose.
No, FracturedRetina too.
No, he's not. Um, fractured ret...
right
Mods should be automatically appointed by meta activity and successful flags
@Mitch I think that's a distinct possibility.
11:16
@Mitch but then you'd be a mod
What? No.
Of those who volunteered.
it's true. You're at least as active as me on meta
@Mitch OIC
you are in fact more active than me on meta
I choose that rule because it matches closest my opinion.
@Mitch Well, the voters take care of that.
They usually vote only for those who are active on meta.
I don't know much about this. I really shouldn't even speculate.
I will be happy, I believe, when the elections are over regardless of my winning or losing.
What language is "endast väljas", does anyone know?
11:23
@medica 3 in 9 aren't very good odds. So, that's a good resolution to make.
Swedish.
@Alraxite I agree. I've really come to a good place about it, and for that I'm grateful.
@medica You have got to be kidding me...
Hmm, is that opinion of women in any way representative of Swedes?
@terdon about what?
@medica Use the "reference" arrow
11:27
About what that idiot posted.
Ah! Thanks, I learned something new.
Yes, you should read the whole thread. The man is positively off his rocker.
@medica :-)
Added a bit of excitement to the site...
11:30
Six people will lose. So no point getting sad about it if you do. That's gonna happen.
@Alraxite if you look at it that way, the losers are in the majority! :)
It looks like Reg might have gone on that bike ride. I'll have to catch a mod later.
@Robusto "“A man is about as big as the things that make him angry” - Winston Churchill". I would say your quite average and "It takes all kinds of people to make the world". — Margus 8 mins ago
That's too much like my 'The world is large" obscurantism.
What I meant is there are all sorts of societies where bigotry is still considered common sense.
11:45
grumpyoldmen.SE haha.
@medica Ohhh I love casting the third (and final) delete vote!
@medica Sweden is the most enlightened country in the world. What do you think?
@Alraxite I was entertaining myself!
@Cerberus It has idiots running around like every other country?
D'oh.
(that's what I thought)
@Mitch oh. my. word!
11:48
That thread is fun.
Hello from the middle of Kansas.
I bet we're not getting all of what he really thinks.
hi!
did you see his photo? a bit... well, I don't know the culture. Lets say it matched his words.
@medica Estonian, at a guess. That's where his profile says he's from
11:50
@medica ha ha you prejudger!
Ah! duh. I looked t the photo and not his location.
@medica Which mod?
i think any.
@Mitch (hangs head in shame)
I really expected him to be much older.
11:51
@MattЭллен Hmm I only Googled the first word, which was Swedish.
Reg was in here a while ago. I asked him if I could speak to him privately. He was busy tho. No biggie. When someone has time.
Perhaps it is a Swedish loan word in Estonian.
@Cerberus I thought you knew Swedish, given how many languages you know.
I'm really getting upset by all the press recently that software tends to be a 'macho' culture. I never realized that (but I also don't see, but then I wouldn't)
@medica Do you need talking to?
11:52
@Cerberus possibly, or maybe he's emmigrated to Estonia
@KitFox: others (and myself) have expressed the wish to see Yoichi's answers to the questionnaire. BUt he hasn't submitted.
@Mitch You mean about how the majority of video games are young white guys who soot things up to solve their problems?
But there's some reluctance to ping him. Would it be appropriate for a mod to remind him?
Has anyone posted a comment to him to point him to the questionnaire?
no, but I have a question I'd like to ask privately, but I need to find the comment (I lost it when Reg left). Maybe I do need a talking to, but I don't know it. ')
11:54
OK. I'm about to head out to breakfast, but I can take a moment.
Give me a sec.
@Alraxite Ah, nope!
I've been interacting with him in comments on one of his questions, so I know he's been around.
!!tell Mitch youtube Women As Background Decoration
In the meantime, @Mitch, go leave a comment on Oishi-san's most recent question with a link to the questionnaire. Make sure the link is obvious.
11:54
@Mitch You don't see?
@KitFox Touche...but that isn't all software. I guess I'm thinking of % undergrad degrees (~15% women nowadays). and anecdotes about verbal harassment in the workplace.
Eh. I haven't had that unpleasant of an experience.
Although I'm hardly representative.
@Mitch I wouldn't call it macho, but at least it's masculine.
Well, there are many games with female protagonists too.
@Alraxite really?
11:56
The new King of Spain.
Have we no Spaniards here?
@KitFox Oh yeah...I get that. Video games are totally macho, there's no question. even the less macho ones have a macho goal (princess Zelda)
tomb raider, lollypop thingy and beyond good and evil... any others?
@MattЭллен Portal.
@Cerberus Did he win the world cup? Is that how he did it?
@Alraxite oh, yeah
11:57
@Mitch His father abdicated.
but percentage wise it's still < 1%
Journey.
The Last of Us.
Um. Hard Rain had some parts with the woman in the lead, right?
@Alraxite The plot line there is still sexist (the game play is not so much)
Flower.
OK. Well, these examples are not helping.
@KitFox The lead character is still male there.
Except for a brief part of the game.
11:58
Yoishi is in the election chat if anyone wants to say something. I'm still trying to find something.
@KitFox but aren't all those shooty games 'male' whether the primary shooter has a thin waist or not?
And I didn't even know whether it was known that the character in Journey was female.
@Mitch Don't forget the ridiculous boobs.
