How can I get a free copy of the fist edition of the oxford English dictionary
you cannot
I was told it is no longer in copyright
and there are PDF available
have you searched on Google?
Yeah nothing
@ChrisOkyen The fist edition is the best.
21:28
but someone who's niche is this chat said it is no longer in copyright and can be legally downloaded

@MattЭллен I can't quite understand that format. See /help github for, well...help.

Thanks for getting back to me

Oh! How exciting!
@MattЭллен Good!
@Cerberus certainly interesting :D
Of course the other editions are also available online, no doubt.
Aaand I have just found the CGEL.
I don't think 2nd ed is out of copyright
Anonymous
21:35
I think most people in the US and UK with library cards can use the OED website for free
You can still find it.
so it won't be legally freely available
@snailboat I can use it for free through my university's VPN. But it's faster to install it myself.
@snailboat I was very excited when I found that out :D

In any case, I recommend finding some solution besides "here's a bunch of PDFs" if possible :-)

I've never set foot in Barcelona or Berlin.
Londen, Kopenhagen, only briefly.
Damn it! I keep getting fooled into thinking the election room is this one >8(
Venice, Nice, longer.
@skullpatrol I elect you as our failed election-room seeker.

@Cerberus friend
@Cerberus Berlin
Ah, that's cute.
Related to compaan?
@JohanLarsson Yeah, you like Berlin?
never been there :)
I'd kind of like to go there, except that I don't like modern architecture.
Ohh...
heard good things about it though
22:16
Have you visited all the other cities?
Yes, I only hear good things about Berlin, too.
Still very trendy.
@Cerberus Return! Where are you going?
Can't think of a more trendy city anywhere in the world, for cultured people.
@Cerberus only London
@Mahnax No! The plane ticket is a return ticket.
@Cerberus Barcelona is very hot in the summer.
22:17
@JohanLarsson Ah OK.
@Cerberus What?
@medica Yes, and I cannot stand heat...and the flight has to be before the 30th of September.
@Mahnax I'm not sure what you mean, whether your mean anything, whether it's a joke...
@Cerberus Sorry, are you trying to decide where to go, or where to go on your way back from somewhere else?
@Cerberus london wouldn't be too bad, and Venice in September would be lovely.
@Mahnax The former.
22:19
@Cerberus Oh! Sorry. I say Barcelona. It was so lovely.
@medica But London is around the corner, it's usually easy to find cheap tickets thither. Venice is very nice. But I have already been there...still, that was more than a decade ago.
@Mahnax Ah, you have been there?
@Cerberus I went to Venice in mid-May. It was wonderful.
Visit La Boqueria.
@Cerberus Yes, during my spring break travels.
@Mahnax But you are no thermophobe, are you?
Paris -> Avignon -> Nimes -> Avignon -> Carcassonne -> Barcelona.
22:21
@medica Right, it is wonderful. But I'd have to go in July–September.
@Cerberus Go to Barcelona!!
@Mahnax Ah, yes, I remember now.
@Cerberus I don't like the heat much, but it was fine in April. 25˚C is about as hot as I like, and it was around 25˚C all three days.
Right, in April.
Barcelona is never sweltering like Sevilla.
22:21
You know I am a thermophobe...
@Cerberus It's soooo worth it. The food. The Mediterranean. The culture. The city.
You must see Guadí.
I shall have to bring very special glasses to see Guadí.
@tchrist implemented operator precedence in the parser, turned out nice
after rewrite
@tchrist I would go to see Gaudi, but it miht be pretty hot still in September, no?
22:22
@Mahnax OK noted.
@JohanLarsson Binary or unary?
@Cerberus Have you been to Florence?
@Cerberus Seriously. It's one of the most amazing places I've ever been.
Yes.
Florence was choking hot when we went there.
22:23
@tchrist */+-><!= && || (and more)
@Mahnax OK why was it so amazing?
And I barely saw any of Barcelona. We stayed close to Las Ramblas the whole time.
I'm more into older architecture...
Oh, the tourist street?
Let me Bing some pictures of the Ramblas...
@Cerberus It was beautiful and warm. Charming architecture and very interesting buildings. Friendly people. Exposure to Catalan/Castilian speakers was cool.
@medica The sea-breeze is always pleasant. You could go meet JBJ there and have him show you around to all the fine places Donde nunca te han llevado cuando anochece en Barcelona, as the book’s title runs.
22:26
That sounds better than I heard!
@snailboat where is there a link for how to extract OED from meta.ell.stackexchange.com/questions/735/…? I looked at the other guys link but I don't know if it will work on windows
And La Boqueria was so cool.
user116848
@medica Here?
@Arrowfar hello!
user116848
Hi everyone :)
22:27
Arrowfar sounds like a weapon's name on Game of Thrones.
> Barcelona: average high September 26.1
Fresh fruit and veggies. Olives like you wouldn't believe. If you eat meat or fish, lots of that.
@Mahnax Right those things sound good.
user116848
@medica Haha I am addicted to GOT
@tchrist Oh, right! He was going there. When?
22:28
@Cerberus That's very resonable.
January       55F   13C
February      57F   14C
March         59F   15C
April         63F   17C
May           73F   23C
June          77F   25C
July          84F   29C
August        86F   30C
September     79F   26C
October       75F   24C
November      57F   14C
December      57F   14C
@Arrowfar did you see the season finale on Sunday?
@medica 26 is still horrible for me in the sun, in a city. But I might just survive 26, if it truly doesn't get hotter than that.
@Cerberus Summer.
@Cerberus It isn’t the same. You will see.
@Cerberus I agree with you.
22:29
No specific month?
user116848
@medica Yeah I did
@tchrist I've heard that before. I have died many deaths from heat, on island, coasts, everywhere. Crete was also Hell.
It's more like...is it worth it?
@medica Spoiler! Delete!
user116848
@medica Always a bad ending. A cliffhanger one :D
I really didn't want to know that.
Sea breeze.
22:30
@Cerberus go to Oslo?
Beaches.
Siesta.
There is plenty of sea breeze in Knossos.
Or Ko-No-So in Linear B.
@Cerberus so sorry!!! I thought everyone was caught up! :(
It's OK.
I don't plan on watching the last couple of seasons in the near future.
@Cerberus I would far rather be cold than hot, unless I am on an island and can go diving.
22:32
Same here. Except the diving.
@Cerb Go to Helsinki!
I went to St Petersburg in autumn, it was 5 degrees and sunny all week, I loved it.
user116848
Any of you watch "Person of Interest"?
@Mahnax Hah, I only get to pick from the shortlist. @JohanLarsson
@Cerberus My kind of weather.
22:33
@Cerberus I know. Why though?
Plus if you don’t go during July or August, you won’t be able to make optimal use of your sidetrip to Sitges. :)
@Cerberus Second week of August.
user116848
@medica Sometimes GOT is a bit erotic don't you think?
@medica Yay!
@Arrowfar Sometimes Game of Thrones makes dull stabs at eroticism; it rarely succees.
I prefer 10˚C and light rain.
22:35
@Arrowfar yes, well, not erotic to me. Just unnecessary nudity.
@Mahnax Probably because "Alcatel" (or the Chinese company they sold part of the brand to) only bought tickets to those cities.
@medica Exactly.
user116848
@tchrist Yeah haha
@Mahnax Rain, really?
@Cerberus Mhm.
22:36
@medica Just unnecessary hardcore sex!
@tchrist Ah OK. The hottest part of summer.
@Cerberus lol, on porn hub maybe, but not GoT
Oops I mixed up the tabs.
user116848
Episode six was too much. If you know what I mean.
user116848
:)
Pretty much the only scenes I found in the least erotic were those with Ned kissing Cat good bye in his arms before she went back north, and perhaps when Renly and Loras were horsing around and laughing. I don’t find any of the whore stuff tolerable at all.
22:37
@Cerberus GoT has naked women draped over fully clothed/armored men. It's absurd.
@tchrist sagreed.
Huh?
I seem to remember fairly naked people of all genres.
user116848
@medica But looks kinda hot
Naked boobs.
user116848
@Cerberus Unbelievable haha
@Cerberus rarely men; women? always.
22:39
Hmm.
Take for example the sex scene between Carice and whatsisname, in the second season?
I remember that was pretty long and soft-pornographic.
user116848
@Cerberus So whats hardcore lol
@Arrowfar Well, at the very least there need to be naked genitals.
@Cerberus I just haven't felt there was anything but gratuitous nudity, but that's me.
user116848
@Cerberus Yuck
@tchrist Oh...thanks for the link, but I'm not sure I'd go to such a festival.
@medica Either you have been numbed, or you are being shown a censored version.
user116848
22:42
@medica You should watch "Person of interest" Fully sober and great actors
@Arrowfar I know, right? I always cover my partners' genitals.
@tchrist Have you heard if Book of the New Sun has been optioned?
user116848
@Cerberus hehe
@medica No idea. There’s the Urth mailing list.
what is the Urth mailing list?
22:43
@Cerberus Yeah, not really my thing either, although I’ve been to a few. Burning Man is a million times better anyway, since besides an 8-day rave, you have a million other supercool things going on.
user116848
Funny I didn't think anyone on English site would watch GOT.
@Arrowfar haha! everyone watches GoT
user116848
Apparently
@medica This. Of course, it’s replete with spoilers. But it is not just about the Solar Cycle, but about Wolfe’s works in general.
user116848
I thought people here very sober :) Clearly not lol
22:45
@Arrowfar Why did you think that?
@Arrowfar Sobriety, Game of Thrones, Sequitur Non.
user116848
@tchrist You mean here? :)
Why did three people vote down Matt's mod response?
Which one?
checks
Yes yes, but that wasn’t what I was asking. Never mind.
Gosh. Manhax even has a downvote.
22:48
@tchrist I feel a bit too old for festivals, these days!
I linked the wrong answer. Of course.
So, here’s the telling question: do you think vote totals to the questionnaire are predictive, kinda like exit polls?
user116848
Bye everyone :D
@Arrowfar Bye
Bye, @Arrowfar. Take care.
22:49
@tchrist I think there is a relationship.
Who is Arrowfar? You mean Farooq?
@tchrist For my sake, I hope not, but I fear they may well be.
@Cerberus That’s my line, sonny.
@tchrist With a maximum of fourteen votes on a single answer, I'm not certain that they will be. I'm sure we have far more voters than that.
@tchrist I don't think they're absolutely predictive.
22:50
On verra.
user116848
@tchrist Yes Yes Farooq Bye Bye
For some reason arrow-far makes me think of Horus the Avenger — and Apollo.
@tchrist Ouais.
:16133572 :D
@tchrist I was thinking of Green Lantern Arrow crossed with Mrs. Tiggywinkle.
22:52
Much more sensible.
Why does Green turn up so often in the comic book world?
@Mahnax I see you’re something of a canard yourself, what with all that kebbequacking.
@tchrist Last was when I was 19. I remember signing heat and long queues for the loos, where they had water we could drink. And discomfort and dirt everywhere.
Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Green Goblin. Also frozen foods: Green Giant.
@tchrist Harrumph.
22:53
@tchrist You mean Canardien.
@Robusto Make a list of all the superheros with color-names, and tally.
Feb 1 at 2:17, by Robusto
@tchrist On a dit Canardien.
I am no quebecois, for I do not speak through my nose.
@tchrist I heard kids saying ouais in Paris.
@medica I heard them saying putaing in Avignon.
22:55
@Mahnax not poutine?
@tchrist ping
@medica wæ̃
@medica No?
@Robusto brb
Oh Provence ! Où on peut boire du ving.
22:56
@Mahnax Je ne connais pas putaing
@medica Putain is the word for whore. I noticed that in the southern parts of France, people added an "ng" sound to the end.
And instead of du vin c'est du ving.
Feb 1 at 2:21, by Robusto
user image
Mmm, souffle.
@Mahnax Oh! I didn't know that.
Like puta.
@medica Yeah. It's usually used with an intensity similar to fuck, if I understand correctly.
@Mahnax Ah, bon, Ah, maintenant je comprends
@Mahnax No wonder I didn't hear it!
22:59
@medica Haha.
No, in Québec you probably heard tabarnak more.
@Mahnax We had an ER doc telling a hispanic lady giving birth to push, push but he was saying, puta! Puta!
The mother was not happy.
@Mahnax Haha. La Provence, probably.
@medica Oh dear.
@Cerberus Ouais, Provence.
@Mahnax the reat of us were dying, however.
23:02
I work with a guy from Colombia who prefers to swear in French.
Très original.
@Mahnax Tabarnak was my father's favorite word.
He thinks he'll be understood by fewer people if he uses French and not Spanish.
Merde and mierda are not so different, anyway. Like puta and putain.
really, they aren't

Q: What do we call a grocery store’s action to hand milk and egg to a boy who was asked to buy them by his dad?

Yoichi OishiIn connection with my previous question - What does “make the last word on word” mean?, there was the following sentence in New Yorker’s article titled, “Salia’s word game” "In his dissent, Scalia heaps contempt on the majority’s view that the “true buyer” of the handgun in question was not...

I don't understand.
@AndrewLeach Hi!
@medica Hello.
23:07
Ah, another candidate.
@AndrewLeach we've been dialoguing in the election chat room. Put your 2 cents of you like!
Thought I'd look in, but it's just past midnight, so I probably won't be around for long.
@medica So I saw.
Locking an edit war is the right thing to do.
@AndrewLeach Thank you.
I've appreciated Grace Note's firm but wise handling of things.
It's happened to me on Christianity.SE. Once my edit had been reverted, I raised a flag.
@medica You need to read the entire question to understand.
23:10
I have come to apprecite the merits of flagging. But I didn't at first, out of desire no to bother the mods.
@Cerberus IK. TL:DR
@Mahnax He should use ELUese.
@Cerberus ?
@Cerberus And write in Cyrillic!
@Mahnax They do that in Spain, too. So pan (for bread) ends in a uvular nasal.
@tchrist Cool!
23:20
OK peeps. And so to bed...
@AndrewLeach nite
@Mahnax Also called Incomprehensiblese.
@AndrewLeach Yay!
Hello, Andrew.
Good night!
23:38
@Cerberus I ended up answering it.
I missed a flag again.
sighs wistfully
All ye candidates, answer me this:
You should ask in the election hall.
Why in the world “must” we reopen this question just to cite the dictionary definition of something he couldn’t look up for himself?

Q: The "Oh to have…" expression

FriedrichWhat does "Oh to have..." mean, as in "Oh to have a song in a national campaign" in Jon Lajoie's song "Please Use This Song"? Can somebody explain me where does that expression come from and what is its real meaning. In what context do we use that expression ? Thanks a lot.

It appears that Certain Candidates do not believe in closing questions. Period.
It has two reopen votes, and it is just exactly what the dictionary says it is.
I thought Cerb wasn't running.
23:45
This is strictly General Reference, because this means exactly what the dictionary says it means. It is a standard word, used in a standard way. Please consult a dictionary for the interjection oh or o, which are the same thing. — tchrist 3 mins ago
@tchrist Did I not close that? Oh, wait. I answered that.
Maybe we can scuttle it off to ELL, but I thought that even they weren’t into reading the dictionary to people. But this is just a silly question for ELU.
I am beginning to lose sight of the distinction between ELU and Yahoo Answers.
Next up will be YouTube comments.
@tchrist Show me the way to go home....
@tchrist We've been discussing this issue for hours on the election room chat.
@medica There’s an election chat room???
@tchrist There actually was a You tube question, like, 7-10 days ago.
@tchrist Yes, of course.
23:48
@KitFox I did not understand what you meant. I thought you meant in one of those questionnaire answers.
@medica Linky?
user116848
@KitFox Can you tell me how to earn more points on ELU? By giving good answers?
k
@Arrowfar That’s one way, probably the eaisest one.
user116848
@tchrist What are others?
By asking really good questions.
user116848
23:50
@KitFox Yeah that
@Arrowfar Asking good questions. Getting suggested edits approved. Approving answers. Getting users who have downvoted you to change their minds or resign their accounts. :)
Also earning bounties.
user116848
@tchrist "Approving answers"? For own questions right?
@Arrowfar Yes.
user116848
resign their accounts--------how so?
23:53
Isn't he Farooq?
@tchrist In which dictionary can I find oh + infinitive?
user116848
Yes I am :D
user116848
@Alraxite How did you know?
@Cerberus Come off.
@Farooq Does that ping?
23:54
No, seriously. This is not easy to look up.
O take me back again!
O would I were there!
O that I might see him!
O for another glimpse of it!
O the pity of it!
O dear me!
O dear!
O me!
@tchrist you read it all already?
That's not looking up. And not all of those O's mean the same thing.
If somebody cannot connect “O that I might see him” to “O to see him”, then they are going to have a great deal of trouble all over the place.
@Farooq Do you get the ping sound? Like now?
23:56
Either way, there is no work of general reference where you could easily look this up.
user116848
@Alraxite No no
@Cerberus those O's do all mean the same thing: emotional interjection.
Well, OK.
@Cerberus I disagree.
Strongly.
Look up the word oh or o.
user116848
@Alraxite By the way how did you know :D I am curious haha
23:57
Then read what it says.
Look at the examples.
Use your brain.
It is a sloth’s question.
@tchrist :(
@phenry - hey!
hello @medica!
welcome back.
user116848
@phenry Hello
can't stay long.
23:58
nothing constructive happened in your absence.
(in the election chat, I mean)
who knew that my presence was the only thing keeping it constructive?
we discussed what to do in the case of a rollback war.
Yes, I think that's it!
