"Dear X, it was great meeting you, but I don't have the right feelings for you (this sounds better in Dutch). I'm difficult, I hope you understand. Of course I'd love to have drinks with you some other time."
Would that be acceptable?
!!youtube how I met your mother the hook
stupid sox picking American only video
@Cerberus yeah, it sounds fine
OK thanks!
@MattЭллен Haha that is indeed an issue...
But after one or two dates, I think people get over the crack.
@Cerberus I’d probably steer clear of addressing them as “X”. Makes it seem kind of impersonal. Or perhaps they’ll just think you’re confusing them with your ex. All in all, best avoided.
21:12
@JanusBahsJacquet Oh, but I forgot his name.
It's such a bother looking it up.
Message sent!
Just go with “Hey there”, then. Much more reusable, too.
Yes, then I can just copy-paste it for the next person, lovely.
Or maybe I could just install an application that auto-sends a message if I don't reply within 2 days: "this person has not replied to you within 2 days; apparently, he is not interested in you. Look elsewhere. Have a nice life ktxbai."
That would actually be awesome. I’d get that.
21:15
Haha no way.
Have you ever been rejected in a rude fashion?
Oh yes. Several times.
Oh, dear. How rude? A juicy story?
The worst people have done to me is just not reply to a second e-mail, or tell me they are, alas, busy next week and the week after.
Which I think is kind of fine.
Nah, not really. Just run-o’-the-mill Internet stuff. Someone once rebuffed my actually very polite question (about something or other) with something along the line of “Ew, fuck off, gross old ginger pedo!”. This was when I was about 27, mind, and he was perhaps about 22 or so.
Wow, that is incredibly rude, but also hilarious.
And silly, because 22/27 should be perfectly fine.
I'm even considering dating 24yos these days, and I'm 31. I normally prefer my own age, but 31yos seem to have become so boring these days.
I’ve never been particularly hung-up about the whole age thing. I’m 31, too, but anything within a 10–15 year radius doesn’t even raise an eyebrow for me.
(Okay, 15 down would mean 16 … that would perhaps be just a tad on the young side!)

21:28
Hah! I am older than either of you by one year.
@snailboat Congrats!
Anonymous
@Cerberus Thank you! It took me a long time.
@JanusBahsJacquet I don't know...I imagine bringing my 18yo lover to a get-together with my friends and how that would go. It just wouldn't work.
A 46yo lover might be slightly better, but still.
More importantly, there are plenty of people closer to my age.
I think in practice I'm more like 23–39 at the moment.
Well, I don’t have an 18-year-old lover, so the point is a bit moot—but one of my good friends (who is @snailboat’s age) has a boyfriend who’s 20, and that works fine …
Hmm.
I suppose it is possible.
But I would feel like a huge paedo!
@snailboat I'll beat you yet, you just wait.
What ages are your current or last lovers?
21:33
Well, he (the 20-year-old) works full-time for the military, while my friend is still a student … that would probably take care of any perceived paedoness.
I guess, maybe, to some extent...but still.
But I am not one to judge!
I do hear people complain about how boring their friend's 18yo lover is and such.
Of course, if the 18yo is really cool and wise, why not.

@Cerberus We need to get some time dilation in the mix.
@snailboat I don't remember whether it was I or you who had to travel near the speed of light to arrange this...
Anonymous
In physics, the twin paradox is a thought experiment in special relativity involving identical twins, one of whom makes a journey into space in a high-speed rocket and returns home to find that the twin who remained on Earth has aged more. This result appears puzzling because each twin sees the other twin as moving, and so, according to an incorrect naive application of time dilation and the principle of relativity, each should paradoxically find the other to have aged more slowly. However, this scenario can be resolved within the standard framework of special relativity: the travelling t...
@snailboat As long as you’re not going for time dilation and curettage. That would be painful.
21:39
To run or to have drinks, what to do...
Life is hard. I'll put my contacts in first.
21:57
@Cerberus so I've spent two days trying to make Autohotkey send keystrokes to a window in the background, to no avail.
Ctrl::
Loop 2
{
ControlSend, , {left}{up}{left}{up}{left}{left}{up}{right}{up}{up}, 9007199254740992
}
Return
Is what I have now.
Tried Windows Spy to find out the handle, that didn't work either.
@Cerberus run to drinks
@RegDwigнt Hmm to be honest, I've never tried to do it myself.
You followed the instructions from the help file?
First of all, is 9007199254740992 really the title of the window??
For example, the title of the current window for me is "English Language & Usage | chat.stackexchange.com - Mozilla Firefox".
@Cerberus yes, and it works just fine as long as the window is in focus.
I see.
It just stops working as soon as it's in the background, let alone minimized.
And yeah, I read the help files and the forums and all...
Oh well.
I'm not experimenting with this current run anyway, it's the best so far.
22:07
Ah OK.
Maybe it just doesn't work on your OS, somehow.
The only thing I might try is specifying a control.
Wow!
Got stalled only once. crossing fingers
At the office, I actually got a game over today.
Luckily I'm running it in a VM there, so I just reverted to the last snapshot.
Maybe the browser accepts keystrokes to the window as a whole only in the foreground, but wants the keystrokes sent to a specific control when the window is in the background? Unlikely, but who knows.
@RegDwigнt Smart.
Or have you already trying specifying the control?
@Cerberus Perhaps. But I tried everything to account for that, I'm out of options by now.
@Cerberus the control is actually the same for all Chrome windows.
At least that's what Windows Spy tells me.
And the forums are all from like 2005.
And when people can't make it run, they ultimately hear "post a bug".
Needless to say, this is Vista, so who knows if it's a completely different architecture.
22:11
have you tried setting up something in the javascript console?
You have tried Chrome_RenderWidgetHostHWND1 ?
Ohh Vista!
@Cerberus yup, that's the one.
I also tried using the Title instead, as recommended in the docu and the forums alike. Same difference.
Then I am out of options too. I'm sure you already know more about sending Autohotkey keystrokes to background windows than I ever did.
22:12
@MattЭллен yeah no I haven't messed with JS just yet.
@Cerberus I'm afraid so.
Maybe it used to work on XP...
Anyway, back to drinking.
Have fun!
@RegDwigнt Have you tried Winspector BTW?
I mean, did you find the process handle but it didn't work, or were you unable to find it?
22:19
@RegDwigнt I guess someone finally figured out how to make 2048 an even bigger waste of time.
@RegDwigнt This will probably not help, from Winspector.
If all you have to do is try keystrokes, it should be pretty simple to run in the console.
@Robusto We knew we could trust Reg to do it.
@Robusto Keystrokes into a background window?
@Cerberus It's not a background window. It's a window.
@Robusto We were trying to make it work when the window was minimised.
In the foreground, it works.
22:21
You mean when the window loses focus it stops?
Yes.
Hmm. Seems like it should work.
The thing is, when Autohotkey is sending keypresses to a window in the foreground all the time, it disrupts whatever else you are doing.
it stops for autohotkey. they haven't tried the console
But Autohotkey can in theory send keypresses to windows in the background. It just doesn't work on Vista.
@MattЭллен How would that work?
I also assume Reg tried several different browsers...
22:24
@MattЭллен Ah, so the doggy is talking out his AHK ass again.
Good afternoon.
Afternoon.
@Robusto It works fine, just not in the background.
I have decided that if I don't get accepted to residence at uni then I'll find an apartment. I won't live at home.
But I asked you if you'd tried JS in the background.
Hi I have a question please:
I have this sentense, I want to know how to which of the options is correct:
I live in ...... small town near .... sea.
a- a, a
b- the, the
c- the, a
d- a, the
22:29
@Cerberus just send the key press commands to the thing listening for them
2048 is a javascript thing
I assume the mahusive version is too
@Mahnax Sounds wise. Or a room.
@MattЭллен Not sure how that would work...
@barznjy you live in one of many towns that are by the one and only sea
@Cerberus same as AHK, but you don't need to focus on the window.
@Cerberus I found a place cheaper than residence that's fifteen minutes away from work, and a five-minute walk to the LRT (on which I ride ten minutes to school). Maybe I should just go for this instead…
@MattЭллен I just don't know what this looks like in practice, what you would have to do.
No smoking, too. So my place won't smell like burnt tires when I move in.
22:32
@Mahnax Oh, that sounds pretty good!
@Cerberus It doesn't have a dishwasher, but I can live with that.
You can buy one.
@MattЭллен so only option d is correct, this is because one of my friend said all the options are correct
I bought mine for €30.
@barznjy All the options are in theory possible, but d is most likely to be used in a real situation.
@barznjy yes
@Cerberus I guess you probably just call a kep press event on the window object. I don't know the details, but it can't be too hard
22:34
@Cerberus Ah, handwashing is easy.
@MattЭллен Okay, so I wouldn't know how to do that, but maybe Reg does.
@Cerberus yes, I should have said that
Thanks
@Mahnax ...but a dishwasher is so much better! And it is said to use less energy, too...
no problem
22:35
Especially after a dinner party, Dishwasher is my bestest friend.
@MattЭллен It was kind of implied...
@Cerberus shrugs

The Robusto's on the blink.
Nah, I just programmatically entered random text into chat while the window was not focused.
To prove Javascript could do it.
There was a hiccup because the chat software doesn't allow postings like that one second apart. So I'll up it to five second intervals and try again.

The chat software is inconsistent in that regard. You'll need to deal with the failures to submit when they come up

@Mahnax Do do have a washing machine, don't you?
@Cerberus Right now?

@Mahnax Err I think I meant, you do intend to be living in a house where you have one!
Yeah, I think the timeout escalates.
It does.
But well done!
How did you do it?
22:43
In any case, I proved my point.
You did, for once.
function autoGenComments() {
    var timeoutId = null;
    var counter = 0;
    var $inp = $('#bubble #input');
    var $btn = $('#sayit-button');
    var runTimer = function() {
       timeoutId = setTimeout( function() {
           if (counter < 10) {
               $inp.val(  String.fromCharCode( Math.random( ) * 72 + 32  ) + " . . . " );
               $btn.click();
               counter++;
               runTimer();
           }

       }, 5000);
    };
    runTimer();
}
That goes into the console?
Yep.
Handy.
I guess Reg only needs it for browser windows anyway.
22:44
Try it yourself.
Okay, it's running time now.
Later!
Running? As in software or feet?
Feet, smells like.
Feet.
Bai!
@Cerberus cu
22:47
@Cerberus See ya! And yeah, shared laundry.
Coin op.
like a really dull arcade!
Hey, I see the red sock again!
stares
I remember that from my first year at uni. always hunting for change
@Mahnax lol
My cat just violated our defilinized zone agreement and leaped the fence into my office. Damn!
This means war.
bad kitty!
22:48
@Robusto Aw, cute. I'm sure your cat means no harm.
No, he very definitely means harm.
aww but i'm just curious what would happen if i jumped up and bumped the drink next to your keyboard
Hah.
Later folks, time for some food.
Beets me.
I thank you
I have four of those, one on each paw.
You're done with your run already?
@MattЭллен Wasn't that annoying?
Hmm, it says "Large 24k Gold IGP Polish Wrist Watch" . . . hey, I didn't know Faisal was so popular in Poland.
23:32
Perhaps they have bought Poland.
And got change back.
What was the change, Silesia?
Galicia.
Slavic or Iberian?
It's annoying how many similar names there are.
Galicia x2, Galatia, Cilicia, Silesia.
@Cerberus Slavic. The one that used to be near Poland, of course.
23:42
I know, I know.
I just had to tell the world that there are two.
But you're only talking to me. And you know I'm more knowledgeable than that.
