@MattЭллен yeah we do that too, and the worst thing that happens is a website. But when those politican guys do that, suddenly the worst thing that happens is 50% of the websites disappear, and 100% of the rest is being watched 24/7.
@MattЭллен I work with people like that, although with may be pushing it. They think the more meetings, the more gold stars they get. For me, the more meetings, the less code.
@RegDwigнt yeah. it's crazy
@tchrist aye. meetings are a drain on resources
Calculate the costs. Take away the chairs. Lock the potties.
Working for a global telecom just puts the n-meetings problem up in the exponent part.
Holy Jesus on a stick.
People will really eat anything.
Nobody will eat a turd for a million dollars, but make it 19¢ and people will fall over their feet.
I remember ridiculous 29¢ hamburger specials from McDonald’s.
I’d heard about his pink slime campaign for some time.
13:11
And that was a 200% premium. Others went all the way down to 9.
Not that changed my dietary preferences.
Or orientation.
Or whatever you call it.
Dietary religion.
L’ancien régime maintient.
@RegDwigнt Yes. And people really wonder why I loathe discussing it?
It belongs on the sex, religion, and politics list.
@MattЭллен The rule for inclusion in the EU should be if the country has an entry in Eurovision that year. If not, they're out, government, euro, anything.
@Mitch but then the USA would enter. no, I'll not have it.
13:14
@tchrist on the Internet, everything is religion.
@MattЭллен I don't think they would. They don't think they would. You don't think they would.
Also, what's your beef with the US all of a sudden. You're part of it.
@RegDwigнt It is not a religious position that holds that our Byzantine programmers who write code with Notepad instead of with vi or emacs should acquaint themselves with an auto-da-fé.
@RegDwigнt if the US could exert more power over the EU just by entering a talent contest? I'm pretty sure they'd jump at the chance
@RegDwigнt Probably the pink slime.
@RegDwigнt we're more part of the EU than we are the USA
apart from the spying thing
@MattЭллен We could fix that for you if you’d like.
13:17
I really wouldn't thanks :D
@RegDwigнt I love that stuff! State fairs, pig races, cotton-candy.
@MattЭллен we have a metric(!) shit ton of norms and regulations here they'd have to adopt. Over their dead bodies.
@RegDwigнt If you will.
@RegDwigнt nah, they're just opt out.
@MattЭллен exactly, by not entering in the first place.
See the trade agreement negotiations.
13:18
the UK has metric.
@MattЭллен Have you -seen- Eurovision lately? Kazakhstan would be in well before the US.
but see if you can find it on road signs
@MattЭллен And miles to go before you sleep.
@tchrist The PC term nowadays is 'Turkish'
@MattЭллен still, you don't bathe your chickens in chlorine. Because the EU said, "um no dudes your insane or wut". But the US is unable to make the same sacrifice.
13:20
@RegDwigнt true, true.
@RegDwigнt Billions fall to the sacrificial knife.
@tchrist ...and then into chlorine.
@MattЭллен hmm... good idea.. our armed services do have a pretty good lock on show tunes.
See, you can so put a hamburger on a stick!
13:21
@MattЭллен And the native food culture.
Oh is that a burger on a stick I am looking at? I thought that was Lady Gaga again.
@RegDwigнt wait...people wash chickens in chlorine? spits out chicken salad I thought that was extra pepper.
So anyway, Mitch is precisely right. The US would never get past the semifinals. They only have second-rate Canadian singers. Austria has bearded women.
Será algodón de azúcar.
What Tinkerbell uses to floss her little teeny tiny tinky teeth with.
@RegDwigнt but they'd still have entered. they don't need to win to gain entry in Mitch's EU qualifications!
13:23
@Mitch it's the propaganda de jour all over this continent. Don't know how widely publicized it is in yours.
@MattЭллен oh I see what the problem is. Britain didn't understand the rules again.
according to documentaries, talent contests are part of the US national curriculum
Fey fair fare.
@RegDwigнt Or was it Germany redefining what "entering the eurovision song contest" means?
@RegDwigнt Exactly, since I am always right. All countries who should get in would get in. Israel, Ukraine, um... France? .... uh ... Malta.
@MattЭллен the rules of ESC are clear and unambiguous. The US loses.
13:26
The Ministry for Rules & Measures is always overworked and undertasked in the UK.
@MattЭллен My imaginary castle, my rules
@RegDwigнt what are these so called rules then?
(re-titled Laputa: Castle in the Sky for re-release in the United Kingdom and Australia) is a 1986 Japanese animated adventure film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and is also the first film produced and released by Studio Ghibli. The film was distributed by Toei Kabushiki Kaisha. Laputa: Castle in the Sky won the Animage Anime Grand Prix in 1986. Plot In the film's backstory, human civilizations built flying cities, which were later destroyed by an unspecified catastrophe, forcing the survivors to live on the ground while the sole exception Laputa remains in the sky, concealed ...
So, la puta has herself a castle now?
@MattЭллен I had that class. It was fun I guess. The show dresses always kind of bunch up in an uncomfortable way and are itchy. But that's European values for ya!
@Mitch Naw, Malta’s a dud.
13:28
@tchrist Her mother too.
@Mitch but you looked like a princess!
@tchrist Milk dud's are better.
@MattЭллен OMG blushes
If my face could explode from blushing, it would make a mess.

13:32
not what I was expecting
@MattЭллен good. These so called rules are then good.
@terdon I'm at 2^20. In an hour I'll be at 2^21. my mouse-finger is starting to get tired.
@Mitch Hah! I stopped after a while. You can put it on auto and it still takes days :)
13:43
Geek bait.
I got to 4096 by playing piano on the keyboard, then did the math and gave up.
@terdon I'm just going to do it in my head.
It's going slower now.

The things we waste our time on...
@terdon 9007199254741000.94223826010256 ?
Wow! You did that in your head? You're good :P
13:47
Check it.
I'm pretty confident about the last digit.
The ?
Ah, digit, right.
Exactly.
@terdon It's fun...it looks like things will fall apart about 2/3 in, just not enough room after that to make progress (not enough room to find dupes easy to collapse).
I forced myself to stop. Too addictive.
Did you check my math?
Heh, no, I'll take your word for it. Especially that last digit.

@Mitch maybe there are two answers
@Mitch the bot's answer is down to Firefox's implementation of javascript
I believe
@MattЭллен Oh. javascript.

@Mitch oh. windows calc

any lamer can use that.

now we've got rounding errors
oh, mathy!
Hey mathy, do you have a sister?

14:39
omg. should the last digit be 6?
and again!
Hmm, I'm guessing there's some rounding going on somewhere but I'm not sure where.
oh! so awk agrees with javascript. excel is a different number altogether
Here comes C:
9007198717870080.000000
void main(){
  float f=94906265.6242516;
      printf("AA %f\n",f*f);

}
Aren't those obviously wrong?
14:43
I'm sure to be doing something stupid in the C one. I don't really know C.
try double
@MattЭллен Wouldn't trust Excel as far as I could throw it.
@Mitch Can't, needs float for the decimal doesn't it?
true. it does have bugs built in for compatibility
?? double is a double worded float.
void main(){
  double f=94906265.6242516;
      printf("94906265.6242516*94906265.6242516 = %d\n",f*f);

}
94906265.6242516*94906265.6242516 = -372449864
scratch that, idiot printf
94906265.6242516*94906265.6242516 = 9007199254741002.000000
14:45
agrees with awk
Phew
9007199254741002
9007199254741002
9007199254741002
At least it's consistent:
$ ./aa
94906265.624252*94906265.624252 = 9007199254741002.000000
9007199254741002.000000/94906265.624252 = 94906265.624252
that's good
oh, it's rounded the 16 to a 2
15:14
@Mitch it should end in a 6

Q: Is the article in "they will be possessed of a place" grammatical?

username901345 Those who believe and do good will be possessed of a place most beautiful in Paradise, receiving a great reward. Isn't this a grammatical error? Since this is a superlative sentence, a should be "the" If not, why not?

Why not "the?" here
@username901345 Those who believe and do good will be awarded a most beautiful place in Paradise.
so it means a very beautiful place?
terdon?
It is not the most beautiful place but a place that is beautiful.
Yes
i see, but it is so unnatraul,..the meaning
15:21
There is a difference between the most and a most.
you would normally expect superlative
in this context
Not necessarily, no.
> adv. In or to the highest degree or extent. Used with many adjectives and adverbs to form the superlative degree: most honest; most impatiently.
adv. Very: a most impressive piece of writing.
if I wanna use superlative.
Then you need the.
"this is the place most beautiful in the world?"
15:23
No, "this is the most beautiful place in the world."
or (clumsy) this is the place that is the most beautiful in the world.
but you say,"the place dearest to my heart"
Yes, how is that relevant? Most has multiple meanings. In the example you quoted it is being used in the sense that I mentioned above:
2 mins ago, by terdon
> adv. In or to the highest degree or extent. Used with many adjectives and adverbs to form the superlative degree: most honest; most impatiently.
adv. Very: a most impressive piece of writing.
?
the reasoning is the same
the superlative
15:25
It's not a superlative here. That's what I'm saying.
most != the most.
I was most grateful = I was very grateful.
I am sorry but even native speakers say yes
The tide was up, and the place most beautiful.
I was the most grateful = nobody was more grateful than I.
Cardale Babington
@username901345 Huh?
google it
15:26
Again, that means that the place was beautiful, not the most beautiful.
And I am a native speaker.
This is also the case in other languages. What's your native one?
user116900

@MattЭллен That shows how bad the latter is, lol.

9007199254741000.94223826010256

@Cerberus Ah, The Devil's Dictionary, can't beat it!
> PIANO, n. A parlor utensil for subduing the impenitent visitor. It is operated by depressing the keys of the machine and the spirits of the audience.
> POLITICS, n. A strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. The conduct of public affairs for private advantage.
> PAINTING, n. The art of protecting flat surfaces from the weather and exposing them to the critic.

@MattЭллен Using a pen?
17:09
@MattЭллен What is that?
user116900
@MattЭллен Geezis, are you John Nash in A Beautiful Mind?
@terdon Oh man. This is fabulous. I need to stop reading it before it eats my whole afternoon.
it took me an hour, so probably not :D
@aediaλ It's a brilliant little book :)
Cynical bastard.
@MattЭллен Why are you multiplying 949062656242516 by itself?
17:12
@MattЭллен lol. I didn't even try :)
As far as I can tell your only mistake was spending an hour doing that :P
@Alraxite well, terdon asked a question, and Mitch calculated an answer with windows calc. I calculated the answer with javascript and got a different answer. Then I calculated it with excel and got a different answer still. Then terdon did some more calculations with other programming languages and they agreed with javascript. I wanted to see what answer I would get by hand and it almost agrees with windows calc, but it's different by 2 ten millionths and I can't see why
user116900
Have you tried multiplying 12345679 by 9?
user116900
The answer is quite fascinating, lol.
!!> 123456789 * 9
@MattЭллен 1111111101
user116900
17:14
@MattЭллен You got my question wrong.
oh well
!!> 12345679 * 9
@MattЭллен 111111111
user116900
Hehe.
@MattЭллен Um, OK.
You could try WolframAlpha.
It'll probably be correct.
I could, but that'd be relying on a computer still
17:16
9.00719925474100094223806010256 × 10^29
so it agrees with me!
Seems unlikely that a computer would get it wrong though.
Most likely rounding errors is what you guys were dealing with.
besides, it was 94906265.6242516
That much we know :)
so windows calc has rounding errors too, according to wolfram alpha
17:19
I'm inclined to trust the C one.
I'm not
it clearly has a rounding error
and is the same as the javascript and the awk one
Yes, it does.
Well, my windows calculator seems to agree with alpha.
Awk is written in C so it's the same issue.
@Alraxite can you show the answer, because that would be surprising
17:21
I'm using it in Scientific Mode, btw.
The Standard one probably can't hold 30 digits.
Windows Calculator used to just use regular FP math, but for Vista or 7 it was rewritten so that people would stop mocking its rounding errors.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 shame they couldn't do the same for excel :D
@MattЭллен That's probably too dangerous. It'd upset every existing spreadsheet in the world and suddenly financial models would diverge and the economy would collapse.
@Alraxite and if you square 94906265.6242516
17:24
Plus, it's a different team at MS :)
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 aye, I expect so :D
Actually, the best would probably be the bc one: 9007199254741000.9422380
$ echo "94906265.6242516 * 94906265.6242516" | bc
9007199254741000.9422380
yes
that is most accurate
That's a command line calculator so it's really made for this sort of thing.
17:25
wow
ok
Wow indeed!
Are we wowing at my picture?
I used the same programme in the same mode and got a slightly different answer
@Alraxite I was
Hmm.
but I can't test it at home, because I'm on linux
17:26
$ echo "94906265.624251600000000000000 * 94906265.6242516000000000000000000" | bc
9007199254741000.9422380601025600000000000
@MattЭллен So am I, use bc ^^
@MattЭллен I get the same answer. What version + architecture of windows were you using?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 whatever the latest win 7 is
maybe I misremember
hm, same as me.
Intel or AMD processor?
second gen, I think
did you make a typo?
I don't think he knows that.
what? of course he keeps an itemized list of past typos in his head
doesn't everyone?
user116900
The spammer is back, lol.
@terdon bc isn't windows calc :p
Nope, but works at least as well :)
user116900
17:50
