> The great nations have always acted like gangsters, and the small nations like prostitutes. —Stanley Kubrick
There is some truth in that.
Even now.
But less so than in the past, perhaps.
Some would like to think that.
Well, drone strikes are still a lot better than plundering armies that burn villages and rape women en masse.
All armies used to do this before the modern age.
Even in the lands they were supposed to protect or free.
@Cerberus All we have done is remove the horror for the side that makes the strikes. But that's been true ever since air power entered into the equation. It's like Harry Lime says from the top of the ferris wheel in The Third Man, as he points down at the ant-sized people below: "Look down there. Tell me, would you really feel any pity if one of those dots stopped moving forever?"
I know what you mean, but it's still different from a real war if you look at the number of victims and the damage.
01:14
The question is whether that sort of thing can go on forever, or if it eventually precipitates a "real" war.
I rather think it sows terrorism. But not real war.
Terrorism is only not "real" war in that it is not like one of the world wars we have seen in the past century. But I assure you it is real enough for many people.
01:26
@Robusto I am merely talking about the number of people involved and the amount of damage done.
A murder is also very real for the people involved.
01:44
@Cerberus Wait till terrorists get a nuke. You think that can't happen?
@Robusto That is indeed a serious problem.
It would be my primary focus were I working at a counter-terrorist organisation.
But that is different.
In fact, I imagine this is indeed the primary focus of several American agencies.
I don't know what weapons the 3rd world war will be fought with; but I do know that the 4th will be fought with sticks and stones.
@Cerberus I would imagine. But don't forget that all the intelligence in the U.S. didn't prevent the 9/11 attacks.
how do
@Rob I got a padded mailer. It's kind of large, but the smaller one down might be a tight fit.

Ah, the dryer hath buzzed.
@Cerberus I think you underestimate the task. There are hydrogen bombs that the United States lost track of. Not to mention all the ones floating around from the former Soviet Union.
Eventually it will get out of control...it's just a matter of time.

Nuclear fallout, or simply fallout, also known as Black Rain, is the residual radioactive material propelled into the upper atmosphere following a nuclear blast or a nuclear reaction conducted in an unshielded facility, so called because it "falls out" of the sky after the explosion and shock wave have passed. It commonly refers to the radioactive dust and ash created when a nuclear weapon explodes, but such dust can also originate from a damaged nuclear plant. This radioactive dust, consisting of material either directly vaporized by a nuclear blast or charged by exposure, is a highly ...
02:06
@Robusto Look up suitcase nuke. If they detonated one of those in the centre of Central Park in New York, it would crush the windows of neighbouring buildings, but no buildings would collapse, or so I read once.
@skullpatrol Only dirty bombs or older-generation nuclear reactors have lots of radioactive fall-out.
The most destructive bombs, the ones that can destroy large parts of cities, generally have less fall-out.
The ones they used on Japan were nasty
I thought the fall-out was relatively moderate and short-lasting?
I think Chernobyl still isn't safe.
and they tested bombs that turned 5 football fields of desert sand into GLASS just from the heat
@skullpatrol I don't usually eat sand for dessert. :)
02:11
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Yeah it's not.
The Sopranos isn't really a full album. Just one song by EC not available on anything else, IIRC.
@skullpatrol Yes, they can be terribly destructive, but the blast and its after-effects (firestorms!!) generally dwarf the effect of fall-out with such bombs, I believe.
@Cerberus it depends where the wind carries the fall-out
@Cerberus Think of the effect on the daily business of that city, and on the economy of the country, even of all of Europe.
this is getting depressing :(
i quite
02:15
@skullpatrol There just isn't that much fall-out, is what I read.
@skullpatrol That's an understatement.
@Robusto You are telling me the effect of a nuclear bomb on a European city would be disruptive? Naaaaah...
Well, you're trying to minimize the effect.
Nuclear fallout from U.S. atomic testing from 1951-1962.
The atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan were conducted by the United States during the final stages of World War II in August 1945. The two bombings were the first and remain the only use of nuclear weapons in wartime. Following a firebombing campaign that destroyed many Japanese cities, the Allies prepared for a costly invasion of Japan. The war in Europe ended when Nazi Germany signed its instrument of surrender on May 8, 1945, but the Pacific War continued. Together with the United Kingdom and China, the United States called for the unconditional...

A beach is a landform along the shoreline of an ocean, sea, lake, or river. It usually consists of loose particles, which are often composed of rock, such as sand, gravel, shingle, pebbles, or cobblestones. The particles comprising the beach are occasionally biological in origin, such as mollusc shells or coralline algae. They are beaches that do not have lifeguards or trappings of modernity nearby, such as resorts, camps, and hotels. They are sometimes called undeclared, undeveloped, or undiscovered beaches. Wild beaches can be valued for their untouched beauty and preserved nature. Th...

Q: What is the rule for adjective order?

RegDwigнtI remember being taught that the correct order of adjectives in English was something along the lines of "Opinion-Size-Age-Color-Material-Purpose." However, it's been a long time and I'm pretty sure I've forgotten a few categories (I think there were eight or nine). Can anyone fill them in?

Well, not unique. But only the second ever.

Is the following sentence correct where I tried to use "read" as a noun?
> The concept is called "loanwords" and I wonder if you have had any reads on it

3 hours later…
10:05
@Gigili that depens what you're trying to mean.
off the top of my head I can think of two ways read is used as a countable noun
"That's a good read" — That is a good [written work, e.g. book, news paper article].
This is idiomatic. I don't think that read is used to mean written work outside describing the quality of said work
The other use of read is to mean indication
"I have a read on him" — I have an indication of where he might be.
I don't think either meaning fits your sentence, so I wouldn't use read there.
I would probably change any reads on it to either read anything about it or any information on it depending on what you want to mean and remove had completely.

Cincinnati chili (or "Cincinnati-style chili") is a regional style of chili con carne characterized by the use of seasonings such as cinnamon, cloves, allspice or chocolate. It is commonly served over spaghetti or as a hot dog sauce, and is normally of a thin, sauce-like consistency, unlike most chili con carne. Gross.
@tchrist I remember reading something about that some two years ago. Don't remember what it was.
People ask for it by saying “Gimme one n-way”, where n means something particular in this context, each value an extra ingredient. I think 5 is spaghetti.
11:36
Basically it's either by design, or a bug, and bugs are by design as well, otherwise they wouldn't be there.
@tchrist so it's like with those prison jokes, eh. Number 37! Hahaha.
> Ordering Cincinnati chili is based on this ingredient series: chili, spaghetti, grated cheddar cheese, diced onions, and kidney beans.[4] The number before the "way" of the chili determines which ingredients are included in each chili order.[2] Thus, customers can order a:
Bowl: chili in a bowl
Two-way: chili and spaghetti
Three-way: chili, spaghetti, and cheese
Four-way: chili, spaghetti, cheese, and onions
Five-way: chili, spaghetti, cheese, onions, and beans
and optionally, the:
Four-way bean: chili, spaghetti, cheese, and beans (beans substituted for the onions)
