You might and you might not.
Right.
Does your university have a chance for you to spend your junior year abroad?
@tchrist Not for my program, I don't think.
Oh, what program/school are you in?
Bachelor of Science Honours, majoring in Chemistry.
University of Alberta.
04:01
Hm.
I don't think I want to spend my first year abroad, to be quite honest.
Gosh no.
I don't have the money for that.
Junior year is #3.
Oh, junior is third year?
04:02
Spend it in a cheap country. :)
Yes.
What the heck?
I see.
What's first year?
Freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, hanger-on.
Ah, OK.
Just like high school.
Well, here we don't use those terms in HS.
04:02
Madison has ~2k abroad students and ~43k on-campus students.
By third year, though, I have to start taking specialized courses and narrow down the field I'm in, so I'd rather do that here.
If you do spend your junior year abroad, make sure you change back afterwards. :)
Haha.
I picked up a Spanish degree and all my non-science breadth requirements studying in Spain for a year.
But yeah, that doesn’t work for science degrees.
So I had to do a lot of work when I got back.
Right.
04:04
So literature and history and such were knocked out of the way, and I had already tested out of English because of high school AP exams.
Oh, did I tell you I might get my Finnish citizenship?
I seem to recall that, yes.
Apparently I can declare it, since my dad was a Finnish citizen when I was born.
Interesting.
I'm very excited about the prospect.
04:05
Because then you could work anywhere in the EU?
Yes.
That would be cool.
Truly. I just have to make sure that I avoid living in Finland before I turn thirty :)
Mind you, I’ve worked in Europe a huge whole lot more than I ever lived there. Lots of travel.
Oh right.
Never know when the Russians will strike up another war with Finland.
But if I do move there, I'll do my conscription with pride.
Haha.
04:08
Either that, or you’re going to Africa for a savannah experience.
Oh, also, if I work 20 hours/week at Starbucks during university, they'll give me $500 a year for tuition. Might even be five hundred per semester.
So I will be doing that.
They do? Like as a bonus to your pay? That’s awfully generous of them. Must be a tax thing.
@tchrist It's one of the weird benefits available to us. Just like stock options and stuff. Very odd for a practically minimum-wage job.
It is.
You can get healthcare and dental and stuff too.
04:10
In “the real world”, it is common for a tech business to pay someone with a BS to take classes and get an MS.
I have that through my parents, but when I move out I'll look into it for myself. The university also helps with stuff though.
@tchrist Huh, neat. I know that my friend's father is being paid to get more 'tickets'.
Because they want more MS employees.
And you don’t even have to pay it back if you immediately go somewhere else when you’re done.
Of course.
So it is not like they have anything on you.
Ooh, nice.
04:11
My cousin did that. He got his BS, moved here and worked for NCAR, who paid for his MS.
Sneaky.
(NCAR = National Center of Atmospheric Research)
That sounds fancy.
Because they’re government funded, they have great benefits but not so great pay. So after he had his MS, he moved on to an “industry” job here that paid much better.
Did you know that Boulder has the highest proportion of MS-degreed people in any city in America? It’s because of all the national labs here.
I should get some food before everyone's asleep upstairs, and then it's probably bedtime for me. So goodnight, Tom! It's been nice to chat again. See you around!
04:14
We’re always in the top 3 for PhDs too.
Yes, good night.
@tchrist Oh, neat!
I have to go too.
Thanks, likewise.
But yeah, I should go. See you!
Bye!
do you have an academic title?
04:15
@JohanLarsson What does that mean?
ms phd or something?
Of course.
You mean a degree.
We don’t call those titles.
I have a BA in Spanish and also in Computer Science, and I have an MS in Computer Science.
But I really have to sleep. What the heck are you doing up?
going to work now, 06:17
04:17
Ah, ok.
Good morning and good night then! :)
fullday meeting today, tempted to take the day off and go there any way but skip the meeting :)

@RegDwigнt i'd be okay with that :) worth it
Well, there's two to death tango. We still need his approval.
@RegDwigнt nahhhhh
@RegDwigнt that does say what i think it says, right?

Tengo tres ovejajajas en una cabaña.
@MickLH he sits here quietly, never saying a thing. something of a wallflower
13:42
Salzburg is chillin in winter.
@RegDwigнt my spanish teacher would never translate it back how we'd say "nada" in that context in english. and he'd get this really deep country accent and say "you can't have NOTHin'" it was the best
@MattЭллен I think that's the case in game developers chat too :P
@RegDwigнt No se que poder hablar por esto
@MattЭллен that's what Salzburgs traditionally do. Until you try to get some salt past them. Then they suddenly want taxes. Wegelagerei.

Q: Showing a Reader and Strong Understanding of the Language

Alexander Morou New to this branch of SE if I'm in the wrong corner, let me know. I've often found creative writing to be a nice way to relax; however, as hobbies go, if I'm going to invest time in something I want it to be done right. I'm trying to improve my understanding of the English language as a...

Why are people upvoting this question?
There is no realistic way to answer this.
Why are people voting for red or blue every 4 years when it's the same choice either way?
Why are there labels not to insert screwdrivers into your body?
@MickLH welllllll....if you think hard enough about that........
@MickLH LOL!
@MickLH To protect from litigation.
@MickLH Because they perceive a difference between the two
Lol dude, you just inspired me
Can you answer mine now?
14:39
I have to go remix the team rocket theme song from pokemon with "litigation" instead of "devastation"
@MrHen And add dubstep wobs, also the cause is: people are "silly" (read: stupid as f**king hell)
@MickLH Heh :)
@MickLH That isn't really an answer... -.-
fix'dd
@MickLH :P
Sorry I don't have a quick easy solution, although I do have a machine from an old friend that can shatter the earth's crust and release the magma if you like
@MrHen that might actually be a factor.
14:42
@MrHen Why is that still open?
"I can't answer this question, so I have to upvote it".
@KitFox No idea. I've been trying to get it off of the Unanswered list but every time I do, someone upvotes it
"I don't know anything about English, so I would appeciate such a list"
@RegDwigнt sigh...
Also, thanks
Can someone just leave a horribly mean comment already?
14:43
Why are people starring lots of crap these days? Or rather, why is one person starring random messages?
@MickLH I'm fresh out of mine for today. With this one. You AWFUL MONSTER.
@KitFox Maybe KitSox is rebelling in her own way.
I mean come on, "Q: Showing a Reader and Strong Understanding of the Language"
Where's yours?
Obviously start with basic grammar
14:44
@MrHen musta reached adolescense
I will show you my a reader for three thousand dollars.
I will show you the entire a team for twenty.
Hello.
I don't have three thousand dollars. But I do have twenty
Are you flashing your reader to the room?
Oh look who's crawling out from under his Koningsdag table. Proost!

Hi @Cerb!
@RegDwigнt Grüß dich!
@snailboat Oi!
@MattЭллен Eep!
I spent Koningsdag in the country, far away from any "festivities".
Birds and deer were all we saw.
@kitfox twinkle, twinkle little star....
14:47
Now gimme the twenty to see the rest.
like a hostage situation!
OMG is that Willem Alexander, glass of beer between his teeth?
@MattЭллен Is that an order?
hands over twenty
14:48
cool!
@KitFox, @RegDwigнt: Btw, I am now starting to flag some questions as ELL candidates. I'm assuming that's cool with you guys?
Sure.
I mostly ignore them though, unless the question is already closed.
Is it easy & accepted to migrate a question to ELL?
I'm for it.
@Cerberus it is easy for mods.
Also J.R. is literally asking for it now.
Ah OK.
14:55
Perhaps if more of those proverbial 50 questions per day were migrated to ELL, this wouldn't be as much of an issue? — J.R. Apr 20 at 10:42
Good.
So there you have it. Flag for migration.
Will do.
I'm still a little unclear which questions should be migrated to ELL but I'll flag the ones that seem potentially relevant and let the gods sort the dead.
Er, mods.
Haha:

Q: What is the best word or phrase to use, that describes comments provided by a guide?

Vladimir OselskyWhat is the word that can be used to describe commentary given by a guide during a tour? For example riding on guided tour of a city where guide tells you about different objects of interests. Edit: Looking for the word or phrase to replace blanks, hopefully this makes the question clearer. ...

"I need a word to describe this thing I just described in my post."
