Good morning! Happy Fat Thursday!
hi
!!wiki Fat Thursday
Fat Thursday (German Fetter Donnerstag, Schmotziger Donnerstag, or in areas where carnival is celebrated Weiberfastnacht; (Tsiknopempti); ; ) is a traditional Christian feast marking the last Thursday before Lent and is associated with the celebration of Carnival. Because Lent is a time of fasting, the next opportunity to feast would not be until Easter. It is similar to, but should not be confused with, the French festival of Mardi Gras ("Fat Tuesday"). Traditionally it is a day dedicated to eating, when people meet in their homes or cafés with their friends and relatives and eat lar...
This whole 'Ukraine' vs 'The Ukraine' thing...
@AndrewLeach Then in the case of Ukraine (don't know about the others) you are politically incorrect. The Ukrainian government specifically requested after independence that it be known as 'Ukraine' in English, which is what all responsible opinion (such as the BBC) call it. Ukraine is a territory which has been contested for centuries between such protagonists as Russia, Poland, Austro-Hungary, Ottoman Turkey and others. Previous governments of Russia (not just the Soviet - but take a look at Catherine the Great) had appended 'the' as a way of inferring it was part of Russia. — WS2 3 hours ago

I thought Russian (and Ukrainian) were anarthrous (do not use articles). So how could C the G add 'the'?

A doughnut or donut ( or ) (see spelling differences) is a type of fried dough confectionery or dessert food. They are usually deep-fried from a flour dough, and typically either ring-shaped or without a hole and often filled. Other types of batters can also be used, and various toppings and flavorings are used for different types, such as sugar, chocolate, or maple glazing. In addition to ...

Out of curiosity. I imagine some feel very strongly about certain topics. But was it so terrible to refer ~ing form as a gerund? I'm a physicist and if someone tells me his weight is 5 kg, I understand they mean mass.
It's not terrible, it's just wrong in certain cases.
So weight is not terrible, just wrong from certain perspectives.

Q: What to do if assignment is against student's religion?

Juan Sebastian Lozano MuñozWhat is the proper course of action if while teaching an undergraduate or even secondary school course an assignment violates the religious beliefs of a student? For a more concrete example of where this might happen, let us consider an art class with a Muslim student (Disclamer: I am not an ad...

Geezis, if that is true, then Islam is really silly.
Now is someone going to flag me for saying that?
Religion should not be considered sacred. It is just like any other thing.
However, a large part of mankind is too stupid to see that.
Because of the stupidity of certain people in power, the rest have to pretend to be stupid as well.

@JasperLoy ha ha. religion is all about sacred things.
Trying to remember where I read a great summary of religion, that it either tells you to relax because you're much more important than it appears, or tells you to relax and enjoy the fact that you are so unimportant.
@Nico it was important, in your case, to differentiate because you're talking about parts of speech and asking what they're called.
Gerund never simply means "-ing form", whereas the layman term "weight" does mean "mass"
@MattЭллен It's funny where we consider weight and mass to be equivalent and where we don't.
@MετάEd it's funny that you can figure out mass without gravity
We tell schoolkids that pounds are a measure of weight and grams are a measure of mass, and explain the difference. But the pound that we use customarily has been defined as 0.45359237 kilogram since 1959. We hardly ever use pound-force.
@MattЭллен I think you can't have mass without gravity. Which isn't funny, obviously, because of the gravity.
Hiya!
Does the Higgs field rely on gravity? Because some mass comes from that

I'm kind of excited about it and I want to do a good job.

@Mitch Yes, I'll be the interviewer.
@KitFox However, I still have feelings for L, funny right?

Hi, Is correct to use "Us" in a sentence like this? - "Nice, us there and perfect"
@aGuy No. I have no idea what you are trying to mean with that sentence.

@MrHen I mean a picture that I am seeing

Exactly. More than just one.
Yet so many people keep pretending that is not the case.

@aGuy The picture is nice, but it would look perfect with the both of us there.
And they never do that for other countries, mind you.
People are always arguing that Africa is not a country

A country is a region legally identified as a distinct entity in political geography. A country may be an independent sovereign state or one that is occupied by another state, as a non-sovereign or formerly sovereign political division, or a geographic region associated with sets of previously independent or differently associated peoples with distinct political characteristics. @MrHen well, they are.
They are also peeving disguised as questions.

And I've now closed, and I've now converted to comments, and I've now commented, and my job is now done.
There is no country called "Germany". There is also no "Russia", no "France", no "China". "Canada" is an absolute exception, not the rule. "America" is the absolute rule, not an exception. Of course I would really like to be around when @krikara informs that Canadian thusly. — RegDwigнt 2 mins ago

Heh, someone didn't like my snarky, no extra information added answer:

A: Grammar, concerning any exceptions of "wish" sentences

MrHenThey are both correct and mean roughly the same thing.

I also actually disagree with the other answer on that question. "I wish I went to X" can be applied to an activity that happened in the past. "I went to X" is referring to a past activity. "I wish I went to X" can refer to a desire that you went to X in the past.
Likewise, "I wish I had gone to X" can refer to a choice in the past that is affecting a current state.
22:01
NG is really annoying.
Almost all his questions are "Why do you say X?" and you don't. And then he gives evidence that people do, and it's wrong.
I do not trust his motives

ok, so that's the boring solution... now I've got to think up a wacky algorithm
