The choice of song for this particular venue is touching and uplifting. Plus the subtitles are cute. But I don’t think English comes as readily to their mouths as ’twould to thine or mine.

A very sweet thing indeed.

Such a grim, grey place.

Did you see the sign for loans? Sigh. (prestaciones)

no. my Español isn't that good :D

7:12 PM
There a good list of them to let go playing in the background here.
Spanish is one of those languages that doesn’t capitalize languages the way we do.
I thought French the same, but I have seen some counterexamples out of Québec that confuse me.

@tchrist ah, español, then

One should say un français and une française respectively for the people and français for the language, right?
But the Kebeckers seem to upcase those.

So I understand. But it's something I've only learnt recently, too
@tchrist Secretly they prefer the English way ;)

Boy would that rile them up!

7:16 PM
Why are you interested in language(s)?

Frenchier than the French.
@JohanLarsson Childish fascination.

Yeah, I'm the same
I don't have a reason

I'm not very interested but find it interesting to read the discussion :)

I am going to get some food. :) BBL

Hm, when one sings Bizet, does one always roll the R’s in the French, or is this just because it’s Carmen and singing about torreros?

7:20 PM
@tchrist not meant like that, just a warning when you read my ~answers~

Maybe it’s that the Italian R works better sung than the French one.
Titles to videos like Paul Potts singt La Prima Volta für Flashmob in Oberhausen definitely blow my language cache.
I spent twenty years teaching programming to people whose first words of introduction were quite often “I’m not a programmer, but. . . .”
Eventually I would tell them that if made them feel better, they could call it knitting instead of programming.
Knit 1.
Perl 2.

but it makes perfect sense to teach someone who does not know

> He who knows not and knows he knows not, he is a child: teach him.

who said it?

’Tis part of an old proverb.
He who knows not and knows not he knows not, he is a fool: shun him.
He who knows not and knows he knows not, he is a child: teach him.
He who knows and knows not he knows, he is asleep: wake him.
He who knows and knows he knows, he is a leader: heed him.

7:29 PM
@tchrist Beware of leaders.

Ok, then just listen.

@tchrist Socrates would disagree.

@Cerberus Socrates is mainly Plato.

Even so.

It’s an aphorism that comes out of Persia or Arabia. I forget which.

7:30 PM
And Plato was an asshole like Aristotle.

Excuse me?

So that’s where Alexander got it from, eh?

nvm looked it up

Ask Hester Prynne.

@tchrist How about assembling.

7:34 PM
You can make the last one a sage.
It fits better.
Muy bien (or mooey bein’ in cowtalk): so they don’t just run bulls in Pamplona, after all.
The "Kirkpatrick Model" by Donald L. Kirkpatrick gives four levels of (increasing) competence:

1. UnconsciousIncompetence = you don't know that you can't do it well.
2. ConsciousIncompetence? = you know you can't do it well.
3. ConsciousCompetence? = you do it well, and you think about the work as you do it.
4. UnconsciousCompetence = you're so successful it's "automatic" -- you do it well, without thinking about it.
But I’m pretty sure it’s Persian not Arabian.
Just like A Thousand Nights and a Night.

hi
You have a kindness of heart. What does this mean?

In Silicon Valley, they have these wonderful sing-ins where anybody who wants to shows up, is given the libretto/score for some famous piece of vocal music, and you just sing it through.
It only works if you know the work well, or are a professional-grade sight reader, of course.
Larry Wall and I attended several of these while I was visiting there. Trying to remember which ones. Famous works like Carmina Burana, Elijah, Messiah, Bach Bm.
By “attend”, I mean participated.
It’s a lot of fun.

did you sing barbershop?

Yes, lead.
Read: "second tenor" in barbershop talk.

7:44 PM
Sigh.

@tchrist I still think "beware him" fits best.
I'll take baritone.
Now we need two more parts.

I never sing, not even in the shower

8:07 PM
please help me...

@username901345 my guess is that it means that you are a good|nice|kind person but I don't know English

thank you

@username901345 You are also an English learner, correct?
@username901345 You might also find it helpful to visit the "English Language Learners" chat room.

8:23 PM
thank you

@tchrist I didn't know that!
!!rimshot

woo hoo! Zing! ba da bing! Yo mama's so nice she makes snacks for everybody!

Jez
evening

8:42 PM
Just watched Dinoshark on TV, lol.
Hi @KitFox!

Hi @Jasper.
I was just going to read your email again, so I could reply to it this weekend.

There's no hurry.
These few days I have also been thinking about what I wanna do in future when I get well.
Of course, I don't know when that will happen.

One thing I had meant to ask was about the thing you mentioned. The field is maths, right?

Yes, mathematics.
I am not sure if what I wrote made any sense.

Thought so. I just wanted to make sure.

8:48 PM
I just presented my thoughts to you.

Well, I want to make sure I give you a useful response.

Hmm, OK.

It's good that you are thinking about your future.

I have been trying to get well year after year.
All those things I wrote to you I have been thinking about for many years.
I hope it won't be too long before I am well, whatever that means.

How is it going this time?

8:51 PM
Well, I will just continue to take my meds and sort out my thoughts on my own.
My sleep is still pretty irregular.
Yeah, I know, they tell me to go for psychotherapy too.
But that is something I will always consider but never really think will help.

It might help. As you know, I am a big fan of cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Now, I understand why Nash took twenty years to heal. It's tough.

Psychotherapy is interesting, but not really useful, IMO.

Oh, I thought you were a big fan?

Just plain old talk therapy actually made me worse off, I think.

8:54 PM
Oh, you are distinguishing between the two forms here, I see.

It was CBT that straightened me out for good.

OK.
Anyway, I don't think ERP really applies in my case, yes I know that CBT is different from ERP.

What's ERP?

Exposure and Response Prevention for OCD
It mostly applies in the case of those who fear germs.

Oh that.

8:58 PM
It also stands for Electronic Road Pricing here, lol.

I was thinking enterprise resource planning.

It's what a baby does.

I thought ERP was demonstrated as not really very effective, but maybe that's just for PTSD.

I don't know of any ERP outside OCD.

In which case, it's actually the opposite of helpful.

9:00 PM
Anyway, it's just a whole bunch of meds and a whole bunch of therapies.
Each works for some people but not others.

Yep.

Justin Bieber is getting very naughty, lol.

I am feeling really sleepy. I haven't slept well in three days, and I just woke up from a nap. I feel like I should still be sleeping.

Well, I try to regulate my sleep, but keep falling back. I guess it's the same for you.

I'm going to go forage for some food. I'll send you an email sometime this weekend.

9:02 PM
OK, see you.

I slept large parts of today, skated 20 km in between naps though.

What kind of skating?

@KitFox I hope you won't mind me asking, but any news?
Thanks
;)

@JohanLarsson cool

@Theta30 Hi Bogdan!

hi Jasper Loy

I am going to take a shower.

@JasperLoy Where to?

9:11 PM
@MετάEd Nowhere, just staying at home, lol.

So you and your shower are having a quiet stay-in day at home. That's nice.

@JohanLarsson do you have rink outside your home?
@MετάEd he can sing so that the meeting would not be quiet

@Theta30 they have a long track on the lake nearby. Not sure track is the correct word

A weightlifter eating some whey Thought his meal looked kinda grey Adding tomatoes And sliced up green marrows The dish gained a pleasant bouquet

9:42 PM
Weightlifters have strange diets.

example?

As the limerick above says eating some whey...
!!wiki whey

Whey or milk serum is the liquid remaining after milk has been curdled and strained. It is a by-product of the manufacture of cheese or casein and has several commercial uses. Sweet whey is manufactured during the making of rennet types of hard cheese like cheddar or Swiss cheese. Acid whey (also known as "sour whey") is a by-product produced during the making of acid types of dairy products such as cottage cheese or strained yogurt. Production Whey is a by-product of cheese production. It is one of the components that separates from milk. Uses Whey is used to produce ricotta, brow...

LITTLE Miss Muffet discovered a tuffet,
(Which never occurred to the rest of us)
And, as 'twas a June day, and just about noonday,
She wanted to eat--like the rest of us:
Her diet was whey, and I hasten to say
It is wholesome and people grow fat on it.
The spot being lonely, the lady not only
Discovered the tuffet, but sat on it.
A rivulet gabbled beside her and babbled,
As rivulets always are thought to do,
And dragon flies sported around and cavorted,
As poets say dragon flies ought to do;
When, glancing aside for a moment, she spied
A horrible sight that brought fear to her,
A hideous spider was sitting beside her,
And most unavoidably near to her!
Albeit unsightly, this creature politely Said:
"Madam, I earnestly vow to you,
I'm penitent that I did not bring my hat.
I Should otherwise certainly bow to you."
Thought anxious to please, he was so ill at ease
That he lost all his sense of propriety,
And grew so inept that he clumsily stept
In her plate--which is barred in Society.
This curious error completed her terror;
She shuddered, and growing much paler, not
Only left tuffet, but dealt him a buffet
Which doubled him up in a sailor knot.
It should be explained that at this he was pained:
He cried: "I have vexed you, no doubt of it!
Your fists's like a truncheon." "You're still in my luncheon,"
Was all that she answered. "Get out of it!"
And the Moral is this: Be it madam or miss
To whom you have something to say,
You are only absurd when you get in the curd
But you're rude when you get in the whey.
