@Cerberus You should try to put a Santa hat on each one of those dog's heads?

I was thinking 16 or 18 or so.
@badass Umm no thanks!

@Cerberus Close enough.

1 or 2 years means so much more when you're young.

Kids I work with seem a lot more mature, and they're also quite immature.

How old?

6:03 PM
They range from 13 to 18.

icic

The two boys that talk about girls most in my presence are I think 15 and 17.

boys will be boys

Some are, but others are extremely shy.
And some girls are the opposite of why.

@KitFox Who?

6:06 PM
English.

Master?
He's 13?

7 mins ago, by KitFox
I'm just guessing. He acts like a kid.

We also had this girl, I think she was 17, who would barge into the room, where younger children were also studying, and proclaimed how she had had "such good sex" with her boyfriend the night before, out of the blue.

@KitFox Ah. He's 24, I think

Really?

6:08 PM
That's what he says, at least

That is older than I expected.
Ah OK.

in JavaScript on Stack Overflow Chat, 6 hours ago, by EnglishMaster
First "real" job in age 24, how does it sound?

Sounds more like his ambition to me.

Possibly
@KitFox As a moderator, do you have access to past names of other users?

Possibly.
Somebody in particular you were wondering about?

6:16 PM
Kids grow up so much faster these days with the internet around.
The old 16 is the new 13.

Or maybe not...

@KitFox Yeah, while searching for the message I linked, I saw that EnglishMaster was oOOOOooOO earlier. I'm not entirely sure if that's the same user as one who used to keep trolling the JS room. (I don't remember the troll's user name, but I do remember oooooo negatively)

Yeah. Right.

But it doesn't really matter

@SomeGuy Yeah, pretty sure it's the same person, but that's not something I can check directly.
Except I don't think he's intentionally trolling. I think he's a kid.

6:20 PM
Sucks when that happens
I remember being a stupid kid on the internet

@Cerberus why not?
Speaking generally of course :)

Heh.
I dunno.

oh

Brilliant discussion

That's us!!

6:27 PM
@JasperLoy Most people don't need that to convince them that Russia is not the best vacation place.

Not growing up, just being sexualized, propagandized and corrupted earlier.
Is what I meant.

Heh.

The internet is full of sex.

I don't know, perhaps...but we shouldn't underestimate what kids have always been exposed to from conversations with other kids and dirty magazines and such.
Kids have also always got knocked up as (unmarried) teenagers.
If anything, that happens less now than ever, in the West.

How do you know that?

6:31 PM

He makes stuff up based on what he believes is true.

And the rate will be a lot higher in premodern times...
@KitFox Shut up.

@KitFox Did you know that 78% of all percentage statements are made up?

95% of the population will believe what you say is a fact if you include a statistic.

The other 5% will believe them too, if you begin with, "As a statistician, I know that..."
Anyone like reading about rare neurological disorders?

6:36 PM
4/3 of people don't understand fractions.

Akinetopsia, also known as cerebral akinetopsia or motion blindness, is an extremely rare neuropsychological disorder in which a patient cannot perceive motion in their visual field, despite being able to see stationary objects without issue. For patients with akinetopsia, the world becomes devoid of motion. Most of what is known about akinetopsia was learned through the case study of one patient, LM. There is currently no effective treatment or cure for akinetopsia. Classification Akinetopsia is known as a neuropsychological disorder, because a change in brain structure (typically lesio...

> A CENTURY FROM NOW, social and demographic historians may be pondering the question of why the topic of teenage child-bearing suddenly became so prominent in America during the last several decades of the twentieth century. The issue emerged from social invisibility during the 1950s and early 1960s, when rates of childbearing among teens reached historical peaks, and rose to a level of public obsession just as rates of teenage childbearing began to plummet in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
In 1995, in his State of the Union address, President Bill Clinton singled out teenage childbearing
@KitFox You're not an historian, the stats are pretty clear, and you're just trying to pick a fight or something.

Nah, not at all.

@Cerberus Thanks for sharing.
Interesting...

> Most recently, a poll conducted by the Public Policy
Institute of California revealed that more than two-fifths of those
surveyed in the state regarded teenage pregnancy as a “big problem”
in their community, and despite a sharp and steady drop in the rate
of pregnancy and childbearing over the past fifteen years, nearly
three out of four believed that the problem had been increasing or
staying at the same level. Just one in eight Californians knew that
early childbearing had been declining.

6:38 PM
@Cerberus I wonder what the rate is in Islamic countries, or in India or China.

@Mitch A lot higher than in the West.

graphs?

Shift the one above up :-)

I think all sorts of weird stuff was going on before they started recording things.
@badass Maybe for China, but I bet India has much less.

Why?

6:41 PM
Hard to find a map. "Teenage birth rate per 1,000 females aged 15–19, 2000–2009."

I wonder how birth rates compare to teenage girls getting pregnant.

But how countries record things is variable. Stigma, organization, coding all bias things in different directions.

Well, for one, India has a lot of stigma surrounding sex itself

It is also ranked #1 for abuse of women.

@badass I was going to say what someguy said, but he already said it.

6:42 PM
@Mitch Yes, it's not always easy to compare, if only because of registration issues.

@badass Whatever the salacious news is, most cultures in India are pretty chaste.

I would expect India to be at least bright red on that map.

I expect very light pink.

I'm surprised America is so dark red/brown. It's the southern states.
@Mitch That's gay.

@Cerberus right. failed virginity pledges.

6:45 PM
Heh. Or just poverty and less education for the lowest decile?
> About 16 million women 15–19 years old give birth each year, about 11% of all births worldwide.

Ninety-five per cent of these births occur in low- and middle-income countries. The average adolescent birth rate in middleincome countries is more than twice as high as that in high-income countries, with the rate in low-income countries being five times as high.

The proportion of births that take place during adolescence is about 2% in China, 18% in Latin America and the Caribbean and more than 50% in sub-Saharan Africa.

@Cerberus I knew it. Those cold northerners.

Frigid.

They don't do sex ed in the South.

@Cerberus American Exceptionalism!

Because they don't want their children having sex.

6:47 PM
@Mitch What do you mean?

Sorry, but remember the topic?

US was on the list in your last sentence
@badass Topic? There's no topic.

@KitFox That may be part of it, but I think poverty and education in general will be fairly good predictors.

31 mins ago, by badass
Kids grow up so much faster these days with the internet around.

@Cerberus Sex ed is education.

6:48 PM
It's always the poor and poorly educated that are the least healthy, have the highest crime rates, the most teen pregnancies, etc.

In victorian England it was the rich who could afford lots of babies.

It's a big part of it. There was a school district in ... Ohio, I think, that abolished its sex ed program. Teenage birth rate doubled the next year. They reinstated it, and it dropped by 75% or something.

At least in the movie I saw that had frilly costumes speaking fancy.

@Mitch I think there will be a strong correlation with education in general. Not saying there isn't a strong correlation with sexual education as well, but there will also be a correlation between sex ed and gen ed, so it's hard to pin down.

@KitFox so that makes figures, calculates, columns of numbers... 2/3 the rate 2 years before?

6:50 PM
@Mitch I don't know, I would expect the poor to have more babies in 1900 England?

23 mins ago, by badass
Not growing up, just being sexualized, propagandized and corrupted earlier.
By the internet

@Mitch Something like that.

@badass By us?

@Cerberus Everybody should have more babies. They're so cute.

Ugh.
They poop and peal.

6:51 PM
@Cerberus Not just us

@KitFox argh!! it's 1/2!!! stupid numbers.

phew

@Cerberus most people do that (I'm sorta glad they do what with all that eating)
@Cerberus People gotta come from somewhere. I'm glad someone was there to help me learn.otherwise...yechhh.

Then again, in prehistoric times, I think sex was a lot more "normal" for people in the reproductive age.
@Mitch Someone was there for you to learn how to make babies?
As in sexual education?
Oh, but I have to go.

later

6:54 PM
Have fun with your pregnancies and your pooping!

Hello @Matt!

Hi
What one should do when they don't receive their order?
I mean an online order.

Email support

I placed an order for a couple of items but I haven't received it. I call the company a couple times but they don't seem to really care.

Make a fuss.

How?

Whine about it in a chat room where people don't care

Exactly. But the people here do care. I think you got this totally wrong.

@Noah You could insist on talking to a manager or something like that

7:11 PM
@SomeGuy I did. They say they are investigating it. But that's what they have been telling me for like a week.

A whole week? Gosh.

Even more than that, assuming I don't get any news on it this week, which is only a couple hours left.
Why are the cusomter service guys so good at speaking?

because that's their job
having been one, we're not all good at speaking :D

Hello all. Is the word "virtue" somehow being misused? Because, I don't seem to get its meaning clearly. Online dictionaries show that it has some sort of moral resonance attached to it. eg: Patience is a virtue, But in other cases, it also indicates as begging of something, a primordial quality of some-one/thing.. eg: by the virtue of his existence ...

Maybe it's all in my head =/

No, you are justified in being confused, it is a difficult word.

does scuba-diving originate from Cuba?

Cuba-diving?
It's scuba-diving

NaN
yep, sorry

Scuba diving is a form of underwater diving in which a diver uses a self contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba) to breathe underwater. Unlike other modes of diving, which rely either on breath-hold or on air pumped from the surface, scuba divers carry their own source of breathing gas, (usually compressed air), allowing them greater freedom of movement than with an air line or diver's umbilical and longer underwater endurance than breath-hold. Scuba equipment may be open circuit, in which exhaled gas is exhausted to the surroundings, or closed or semi-closed circuit, in whic...
So no

NaN
8:41 PM
Scuba is an acronym for self-contained underwater breathing apparatus. It may also refer to: * Scuba diving, the use of a self-contained breathing set to stay underwater for periods of time * Scuba set, the equipment used to do SCUBA may refer to: * Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array, an instrument used on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope * Scuba (musician)
