Stack Overflow officially launched on September 15, 2008. In five short years, you’ve answered over 5 million questions on more than 100 sites, and helped hundreds of millions of people find the answers they needed. Today, we want to celebrate how, together, we changed one small corner of the Internet for the better.

We want to hear your stories about how someone on Stack Exchange helped you.

Before it went into beta, stackoverflow.com had a comic on the landing page that came to symbolize what we were setting out to do: …

18:12
@RegDwighт :)
18:49
@KitFox interesting. So the music is every bit as atrocious as the video, after all.
What did I say?
I believe I said that you would not like it.
And I believe you gave me some "defy classification" smoke to blow up my ass.
Nonono. I'm not expressing my opinion. I'm expressing a fact.
gives @Reg a look
user87637
Hiya @kit!
No amount of looks will change the fact that they took a nice though mediocre chord progression and a nice though cheezy melody and then completely botched it in editing.
18:53
@JasperLoy Hiya.
@RegDwighт sighs
user87637
In other news, I have deleted my okcupid account, lol. I am the master of deletion!
Why sigh? Give me a violin and a mixing table, and I will do better. How does better justify sighing? Isn't better, like, better?
I said you wouldn't like it.
And I said I never said I didn't like it.
user87637
I am confused by so many said.
18:55
But I must be off to watch BB with wife.
So lators!
OK, you go make better. I am sure I will like it better. But I am already overly impressed with you. You aren't going to impress me more. It's just not possible.
Bai!
Don't tell me what happens.
I started watching BB. I am halfway through the first season.
@KitFox we've been over that honey. You only can't get impressed more with me until I come along and make you.
I can't not.
user87637
No flirting in this chat!
18:57
So.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 hoozah! Booyah! Represent!
@RegDwighт so far it hasn't lived up to the hype.
@JasperLoy I'm not flirting with you, in case you're not noticing.
titters
user87637
@RegDwighт I was talking to myself, in case you forgot.
18:58
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 depends on the hype. I didn't have your hype. I had mine. It exceeded my expectations. I started with season four, though. Which admittedly is crazy much better than season one.
I won't be defending it, though. You have to have your own journey.
vanishes
Well, everyone I know who's seen this show is all "best tv show ever! Are you watching Breaking Bad? No? You should be! Have you watched it yet?" etc.
So far, I rate the first season of BB below the first season of Dexter, or any season of the Sopranos.
Which isn't saying I'm not enjoying it: I am. But I'm not exactly blown away.
I wouldn't say I was blown away by it, but I do think it is very good.
As Grace Helbig said "Breaking Bad! You guys! ... Breaking Bad! You guys! ... Breaking! Bad! You guys! ... I haven't seen it."
The Wire was great televison.
As was Homicide.
I. Am. So. Screwed.
headdesk
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I agree, the Wire > BB
I sort of lost my mind last week. And today.
I...
Uh.
Mine turned to goo last week, but has re-solidified.
made a lot of changes
19:11
but you commited things to source control before?
blushes
on production
without actually really uh
testing them first.
hmmm. sounds like you list your mond
I did. I really did. There's pressure. And I don't want to do this anymore. And so I just did it.
19:13
We all do it.
Oh why am I so dumb?
How the hell am I going to know if this works at all? I can't test it in production.
You haven't caused missed trades because you rushed a change. It'll be fine
OK, OK. shakes it off
I can do this.
@MattЭллен That sounds like an interesting story.
that's pretty much it
So. So. So...I will...lock the site and copy it onto the test server.
And test it. And re-release it.
19:15
I was fixing the fax trading system at my old job, tested it, but not enough and when it went live it crashed and trades did not go through
money was lost
Oh shit, that sucks.
I'm not sure how much
they ended up phoning the trades through
so I don't think too much
So, there was a backup plan.
That's good. I should have one of those.
yeah.
I didn't have one :D
Mine is to get punched in the stomach.
Oh, wait.
19:18
apart from stress the fuck out
It's alright. I can do this. I can do this.
I'm pretty sure I can do this.
yeah, you can do it
I have two days before anyone gets up in my grill.
Since I told them I would unlock it on Wednesday, probably.
I only got partway through the dev cycle this time. I had tons more to do, it turns out, so last week I told my boss I was going to drop back and punt, because I was already four weeks past deadline.
I thought I could release this year with no issue and then try to do incremental changes in the next couple of months. But then I realized I had to add some things before i could open the site.
I ended up doing some things out of order and the next thing I know I'm well into it and can't remember where I started from.
Stupid stupid stupid.
no version control at all?
19:27
Version control is like birth control. Its effectiveness depends on how well you use it.
11
yeah, don't try to pull mercurial over your head and inflate it
or shove git up your vagina
hee hee hee
yours was better
19:30
I don't know why I do this to myself.
Some kind of desire to suicide my work.
@KitFox when was the last commit?
3 days ago. Before that, 7 months ago.
ouch
are you the only person working on the codebase?
Yes. And it's not a good indicator really, since I only update the production site every something months.
what did you commit three days ago?
19:37
Some of the miscellaneous changes I made in June.
I've just now copied the production site back to testing. Now to copy the DB...
what version control system?
are there backups on the production machine?
TortoiseHg. There are backups.
Sort of.
The data is backed up. The site is kind of backed up.
When I remember to do it.
what does the locking unlocking of production mean?
I prevent users from logging in.
We shut down the login in the summer.
So that we can confirm the user status and associations in the fall, before we let them start entering data.
It's student data, so we go according to the school year.
How is GR considered off-topic?
19:48
And it's confidential, so we have to check periodically.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I guess because it's something we don't want asked here.
@KitFox is diffing vs that useful?
I don't know what you mean.
See what is changed in your workspace relative to what was comitted
I still don't follow you. I'm sorry. You mean, is it helpful for me to know what I changed? Because, yes.
OK, I copied the DB and de-identified the students. So I'm about halfway there.
19:58
I never used Mercurial but there must be a way to do a diff comparing your uncomitted stuff to the last commit. @MattЭллен probably knows how.
I might be able to pull this off after all. Provided my coding doesn't actually suck.
@JohanLarsson Yes, I can do that. It's not hard.
I could roll back, but then I will forget everything I just did.
So I am going to find a way to test it instead. If it's all screwed up, then I'll restore it.
Huh. What was I doing again? Oh yes, going home.
"Screw you, Gramma. I will deal with this in the AM."
20:34
@KitFox you could clone at a specific revision

Haha!
23:00
Dear FBI: ftfy.
what does it mean?
ftfy = "Fixed that for ya".
that was the only thing I understood :D
The FBI posted an image of a suspect which has substantial distortion, 'stretch'.
Why make it harder to identify someone by posting a distorted photograph.
@MετάEd maybe it was an error
23:08
@Theta30 It was unquestionably an error.
@MετάEd I remember reading about something similar when a Swedish newspaper posted a pixelated image with headline: Do you recognize this person
Will not be able to find it I think
23:26
@Cerberus If it was a miracle, it was a miracle of a disappointingly low order. On the level of card tricks, maybe.
23:36
omg, this phone is awesome.
23:53
@Robusto I love card tricks! Here, pick a card, any card.
Nope, not that one, smart aleck.
