@RegDwighт That reminds me of the guys who got a bug report about a process of theirs dumping core on a segmentation violation, so their fix was to ignore SIGSEGV.
@Reg: One of the reasons I liked Watchmen was that it subverted all the superhero moral conventions. It asked the question, "What if these superheroes, who are always assumed to be on the side of humanity and justice, proved not to be so, and were in fact corrupt, immoral or amoral entities in service to a corrupt and malevolent authority." That's way, way deeper than most comic-book movies go, and what makes everything about it so compelling.
@tchrist It is an example of the pathetic fallacy to attribute to any dresser, bureau, breakfront or chifforobe any human emotion, such as crossness, anger, or pique.
@RegDwighт But Superman came from a planet where his powers were not considered super. They were only super when he came to Earth. If your Bribarian came to the U.S. he could mingle with ordinary folks and be amazing. It is only on K Street in D.C. where he wouldn't stand out, particularly.
@MattЭллен: On feb9, a man WAS HANGED TO DEATH in tihar jail a. was hanged till death b. was hung to death c. has hanged till death d. has been hung to death e. no correction required
@MετάEd Dismiss was certainly my first thought. Others include Banish, Acknowledged, ACK, and Yes, I’ve read your damned popup, now get the fuck out of my face.
@Robusto What are they counting in that picture? client devices? Why isn't "Linux" on there? In my house, there are three pcs, one tablet, 5 phones, three routers, a blu-ray player, and a tv, and of those, only one phone and one PC don't run linux.
@Robusto oops didn't read this far in the transcript :)
heheh I was going to write something similar, but I decided my "use" of Android was limited to "there's an active android computer in my pocket" and my "use" of Linux is "my router is forwarding this chat message to you"
How am I supposed to trust a chart whose author was unable to properly describe the x-axis? It says "number of devices shipped", but it doesn't even mention the period!
@Cerberus it isn't supposed to be. Each point on the X-axis represents the number shipped that year. So in 2007 there were 400,000,000 devices shipped.
It's a stretch. What I see is that tablets and smartphones are now about twice the size of computers, so to me that means the OS graph indicates that Android and Windows are sharing the new market territory and Apple is keeping its share of computer/device sales. Not much changing there.
In other words, Android is the Windows of the mobile market.
> For the two decades through 2005, the personal computer was the only game in town, selling about 200 million units a year. But then smartphones and tablets came along. And now they dwarf the PC market.
> As recently as three years ago, Microsoft's Windows was still totally dominant—the platform ran 70% of personal computing devices. Now, thanks to the rise of Google's Android and Apple's iOS, Windows' global share has been cut in half, to about 30 percent.
The smartphone market is just not yet saturated, so the number of devices sold will remain high for a while. As soon as most people have a smartphone, sales will eventually drop.
@MattЭллен I suppose the ratio between the number of devices shipped and the number of devices used will always remain higher than with PCs, but it will still be a lot lower than now.
I am looking for expressions close in meaning to the idiomatic "how the sausage gets made". Something that conveys the idea of looking at the hidden, gory details of some process.
(Note: I know that particular expression works well. I am specifically looking for alternative ones.)
