@Tonepoet Well, I mean that the Lawrence I met is not the ELU Lawrence, that's all, lol.
@JasperLoy Oh, I thought you were asking a question.
@Tonepoet There is no need to (removed), lol.
19:17
@Tonepoet Well, that's a point for sure.
@Tonepoet Maybe you could post as a partial answer to the meta question.
@MetaEd I'm not going to answer that question because it's asking if the rule is enforced, and I don't know if it is or if it isn't. I would like to note that when you say "It has always been discouraged" that it might be helpful to put a link to where some of that discouragement is though, namely in the help center page on commentary.
@Ghalib it's the usenet philosophy of separate like a tree into subgroups and subsubgroups
@Tonepoet Yes, actually I already quote from that page and there's a footnote link to it. In my answer.
@M.A.R. you wish for 1/2-boxing
user288256
@Mitch I never used usenet by the way. I think I was born after it.
19:26
@Tonepoet I expanded the quotation. See if that helps.
@Ghalib I remember Eternal September like it was 24 years ago.
@MetaEd I went to a urinal in Japan ... waits for you to parse that ... and it had a volume measure. So I'd save up to see if I could make a record.
@MetaEd That little tiny superscript 1 is really hard to notice. Now I'm a couple of feet away from my screen, but that's because my monitor broke and I'm actually using a 40" television as a monitor, so it's actually bigger than what I was using before.
@JasperLoy Unfortunately not on SE
@Mitch Oh, that's another good idea. Because spillage would just defeat the purpose.
@Tonepoet I wish the style sheet wouldn't try so hard to hide hyperlinks.
@Ghalib It had a way lower threshold for entry than reddit/SE. But it didn't have an the concept of voting or rep. it was kind of Q&A-like but also discussiony.
A lot of SE principles are involved to mitigate things that came up with usenet
19:31
@MetaEd Well there are two things of note. One is that you have a footnote indicator without an actual footnote. If you had an actual footnote, with the title of your source, serving as the link that'd be much more noticeable. The other is if you really insist on superscript one using the tag makes a slightly bigger superscript 1. I actually edited one of your posts before just for that purpose...
@MetaEd Unintended consequences...wait, that was an intended consequence? dangit they should tell you that up front so that I know why i am doing these random things that operant condition unconsciously led me to
@Tonepoet I bet I forgot the popup text.
@Færd Technology has taken care of that...
@MetaEd That's what she said!
@Mitch If only Freud had known about that.
Because it just happens that the UI tester noticed it missing
@Færd If a woman hadn't used that, then that would have been literally a Freudian slip
Because of the lack of aim.
Get it?
is trying
See ... when a guy has to pee... but then a woman... and ... what a mess.
Haha. Right.
Had to look up Freudian Slip.
@Tonepoet No point in changing it back. Now on my screen that footnote number is exactly the same size in superscript as it is as a UNICODE raised number.
19:39
@Tonepoet So actually it may be your browser's at fault.
Wow, this has turned into a whole thread of mansplaining about women peeing. @KitZ.Fox in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...
strain's to work in a pottery reference
A slip is a liquid mixture or slurry of clay and/or other materials suspended in water. It has many uses in the production of pottery, and other ceramics ware. In pottery the two most important uses of slip are: firstly, to create the basic shape by slipcasting with moulds, and secondly, to decorate the pottery, which is discussed below. Engobe, from the French word for slip, is an American English term for materials similar to a slip, though the definition seems variable. Some American sources say it is synonymous with slip, and use it in preference to "slip", while others draw distinctions, mainly...
There, that's as good as it gets
Jasperware, or jasper ware, is a type of pottery first developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s. Usually described as stoneware, some authorities have described it as a type of porcelain. It is noted for its matte and unglazed biscuit finish and is produced in a number of different colours, of which the best known is a pale blue that has become known as Wedgwood Blue. Relief decorations (typically in white but also in other colours) are characteristic of Wedgwood jasperware. They are produced in moulds and applied to the ware as sprigs. == Jasperware composition and colours == While named after...
Jasperware? Here I come.
19:43
Ahhh... the satisfaction of mansplaining mansplaining 'mansplaining'
"When a man speaks to a woman exactly the same way he speaks to a man: somewhat mockingly, somewhat condescendingly, somewhat confrontationally". Well ... the shoe somewhat fits.
@MetaEd Perhaps.
"unglazed biscuit finish" - a chapter in the KFC cookbook
@Mitch And it's noted for its @MattE.Эллен.
@MetaEd nice...a touch of condescension
19:45
Wow, I have 2 messages on the star wall. This means a miracle is about to happen in my life.
also condensation
@Mitch Einstein-Bozo condensation?
when walking through New York City, you're never sure if that droplet that dropped on you is condensation from a 50 year old rusty air conditioner or... something else.
@JasperLoy Does something happen if you get 3?
@Mitch I don't know. That's why they are called miracles. You never know for sure.
19:48
@Mitch In a way, when John Nash died in the car accident, maybe he got his miracle. Maybe he still didn't feel too good after all that time...
@MetaEd What a bozo.
I magnified the text a little, but that's how it looks to me, proportionally speaking
@Mitch so many layers to that joke.
19:49
@MetaEd @MattE.Эллен lurves KFC
Because he doesn't know of what's better out there
@Tonepoet Yeah that's a bit different than mine. That's the tricky bit about writing web pages. The receiving device has a lot of control over how it looks.
@JasperLoy Say something funny
waits
waits patiently
@Mitch Miracles happen when you least expect them to.
Argh..that's not funny.
Argh...I used two periods for an ellipsis instead of the proper 3.
How about an old one?
19:52
An old one what?
A tan is good cos it's not a sin.
Nice.
OK, here is scientific test. I'm going to star that, and see if a miracle occurs, OK?
Ready?
@Mitch That used to be OED standard.
Saved on paper.
And ink
See how I saved ink by not using a period to end a sentence?
Sure, ink too if you like.
19:54
Thanks.
I think
I have the Shorter OED, which comes in 2 volumes of normal font size.
You can use the … Unicode character and reduce it from two glyphs to one.
OK, I'm guessing that means you're ready, right?
1...
Yes, I am sure nothing will happen.
2...
what?
I...
19:56
C…
IV…
I didn't want to get the OED in 20 volumes or the 1 volume which requires a magnifying glass to read.
Are there any good recently released movies?
I haven't watched any for days, lol.
I think a nice movie I watched this year is "A cure for wellness".
Baby Driver is a lot of fun
I saw 'The Color Purple' the other day on TV. It was a lot more disturbing than I remember.
20:14
I was beckoned?
@Mitch Read the book.
The book is purpler.

Q: Protocol-relative URLs no longer allowed in profile "About me"

MetaEdThe diagnostic message is All image URLs must start with https:// It’s maybe a bit ironic, or feels like a step back. I elected years ago to use protocol-relative URLs for images. When SE transitioned from http to https protocol these URLs transitioned perfectly to https as well … but the upda...

Faugh.
I don't understand. What's the action item?
@KitZ.Fox More disturbing or less?
20:21
@KitZ.Fox Relative to the ping, or the URL complaint?
@Mitch more explicably disturbing? you get the character's internal thoughts, I think that helps.
Oh.
@MetaEd I'm not sure what you want to discuss with that post. It seems more like a notice.
@KitZ.Fox The reasonableness of protocol-relative URLs now causing an error in the profile editor.
I didn't want to post it as a bug because maybe it's intended.
@KitZ.Fox I'm avoiding 'The Big Sick' because it is a hospital thing (even though it obviously turns out OK for everybody). Who needs hospital drama? It's going to happen.
20:23
@MetaEd OK. Maybe ask that then?
@KitZ.Fox You think it's unclear? I'll rewrite.
Like 'The Titanic' is tragic and all but I can deal with that because it probably won't happen again.
Wow, I feel like I'm being abrasive. I'm not communicating well.
I only meant to say I think you should put a more concrete thing to react to.
@Mitch There are several Titanic movies actually, and I only watched the Leonardo one.
The description is fine, but why you are posting is unclear.
20:24
If it helps, the wording confuses me too
@JasperLoy ??? There are others?
user288256
So I haven't been studying much :/
@Mitch Yes, I think a few, but I can't be sure now.
THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE!
@Ghalib When's your test?
@KitZ.Fox The worst movie ever
user288256
@Mitch In December.
20:26
@KitZ.Fox Oh that is another one though, not Titanic, but maybe there are also a few Poseidon movies, lol.
Like the Towering Inferno except underwater.
@Mitch Nah, Towering Inferno is worse.
hahaha
Pretty much the same cast
jinxish
haha
In Sensurround!
or however you spell it.
@Ghalib slow and steady wins the race
also practice
user288256
20:27
The test is in September too but I postponed it. I am not prepared.
do practice problems
user288256
Yeah.
that's all the advice I have left for today
I already see at least 4 movies with the title Titanic somewhere.
I already used up: "Don't cross against the light." and "To get rid of hiccups, drink from the other side of the glass"
(that last one is a thinker)
20:29
There is no way to get rid of hiccups, except to try to burp and wait.
@JasperLoy that's cheating, looking it up.
@JasperLoy that's another way.
But I only watched the Leonardo Titanic, and I watched it 4 times.
or to just try to hiccup. that confuses the crap out of your vagus nerve and it gives up
Hold your breath and swallow.
2
@JasperLoy that is 4 times an already a very long movie
20:30
Yes, it is 3 hours long, OMG.
@KitZ.Fox anatomically speaking I'm pretty sure that is redundant
unless you're not human
I like the part where Kate Winslet appears nude.
not that being not human is a bad thing
@KitZ.Fox See if my edits help.
Not being human is not a great thing, just not meant to be a slur
@JasperLoy Most of the movie she appears nude, underneath a lot of costumery.
20:31
@Mitch no, you have to inhale and hold it, and then swallow before you exhale. different from how you don't breathe when you normally swallow.
When I watched it 20 years ago in the cinema, they censored the nude part.
But nowadays they allow more things to be shown in the cinemas here in Antarctica.
@KitZ.Fox JUst reading that entire sentence I outwaited the whole hiccoughing thing.
OK. I read it again. Now it makes sense.
user288256
@JasperLoy And I'm in Atlantis.
@MetaEd Yes, I think it's clearer what you want now.
Sure cure for hiccups: inhale. Keep trying to inhale, don't hold your breath.
20:32
Now I'm trying to induce hiccoughing to test the method.
user288256
I am not under water by the way.
This whole science thing is hard.
@Ghalib You married a while ago, right?
Hold for over 30 seconds. This tires your diaphragm to the point where the hiccups will stop.
@MetaEd still going
user288256
20:34
@JasperLoy Yes. I mean no. I mean what?
@MetaEd Also, all breathing
@Mitch A hiccough is a hi level cough, maybe that's why the spelling is such.
@KitZ.Fox Thank you for reviewing it.
@JasperLoy A hiccough is a country cough.
@MetaEd So uh. Want to read something for me later?
20:36
@KitZ.Fox At your service.
so it is a false friend
Damn it, now I have to finish writing it.
or a ... what do you call those things? folksonomy?
folkmology? That's not right.
user288256
I wish there were no mosquitoes in the world. I have window screens but they are killing me right now.
user288256
I hear even SAS fighters and other highly trained military people carry mosquito nets etc. with them when they go in jungles. So living here is making me stronger/tougher than an SAS fighter (I guess).
20:48
What's a SAS fighter?
user288256
I was just joking. "Special Air Service".
Oh. haha
because you'd think they are out of reach of the mosquitoes
I keep forgetting, north or south? South is super dry right? and the north is super humid, right?
user288256
No, in the extreme south where I am it is humid.
user288256
I am almost near the Arabian sea.
user288256
20 minutes drive.
user288256
20:53
Do you want my GPS coordinates Mitch?
@Ghalib now all your stalkers are busy driving 20 minutes away from the Arabian sea to find you..
user288256
Just kidding.
@Ghalib that would make it easier, admittedly...
@Ghalib now all your stalkers are busy driving 20 minutes away from the Arabian sea to find you..
@Mitch folk etymology?
@KitZ.Fox nope, it was a single-word-request... :P
20:56
no it wasn't.
@KitZ.Fox lol.. I thought everything was here
@tchrist seen this? (specifically comments) - a disgruntled customer, methinks...
there are also phrase requests
and synonyms
apparently
@marcellothearcane I can't figure out how that question is on-topic.
And why there are no close votes on it.
nearly 10 thousand less phrase request tagged questions than single words (and some have both)
@KitZ.Fox Most single word requests are treated as combination S.W.Rs. or Phrase Requests anyway though.
@KitZ.Fox there will be in due course, no doubt..
21:01
@Tonepoet I was referring to the tags.
on the room
I'm running low on votes - ran out of comment votes by midday!
@KitZ.Fox probably. It just felt like I had heard it with fewer sylbles
@marcellothearcane It's almost a shame that I can't donate some of mine. I never use up very much of my allowance.
@marcellothearcane wha??? There's a limit on comment votes?
21:05
@Tonepoet mainly due to review tasks: I up vote other people's comments rather than saying it again, and then run out :'(
yup.. 30 a day
But no serial upvote trigger?
Wondering if there is something nefarious I could do with comment votes.
I mean I'm asking for a friend
That's what my friend would say if they were asking
Kind of like a quote
It's like a third person talking in the first person
@Mitch Your friend can uptick your joke comments to mislead people into thinking they are sagacious truths! =P
I can't comment on that
Rather my friend can't. For technical reasons

Q: "This is how I found out the solution" in one word

PawkyPenguinChances are this is a duplicate, but it's really hard to search for those things: How do I say: "This is how I arrived at the solution" in one word? I've seen the word used before on Stackoverflow. Someone answered a question and then he followed up with an explanation on how he arrived at the s...

user288256
@Tonepoet I normally don't hear "uptick" in that context.
user288256
21:12
Or maybe it is just me.
Noun: found
  1. Food and lodging, board.
Verb: found
  1. simple past tense and past participle of find
  2. found (third-person singular simple present founds, present participle founding, simple past and past participle founded) (transitive)
  3. To begin building.
  4. To start some type of organization or company.
  5. found (third-person singular simple present founds, present participle founding, simple past and past participle founded) (transitive)
(2 more not shown…)
That's my guess.
user288256
@Tonepoet They would have to come to chat for that I guess. For jokes I mean.
user288256
@Tonepoet I'm pretty sure a bot won't read your message.
@Ghalib Uptick is the term we use on the main website for what we would call starring here.
@Mitch your friend may get a badge from their sockpuppets upvoting your comments...
user288256
21:15
@Tonepoet Why not use "upvote"?
@Ghalib Votes are for questions and answers, and not comments. Also, you can't vote against a comment. Oh, and the indicator is represented by an upwards facing triangle.
Then again, that's not really a why. I didn't invent the term, so I don't really know the reason for it. XP
@Tonepoet today I learned...
@marcellothearcane Maybe I'm just imagining things. Unfortunately, there is no S.E. dictionary for me to consult to ensure that I haven't made some drastic error in that regard. XP
@Tonepoet I'll believe you.. :P
@Tonepoet of course, if JSONbog had his way, it wouldn't be a boring triangle: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/34903/…
please excuse the shoddy Internet connection >_<
user288256
21:23
@Tonepoet Thanks for the info. But there is also this term "downtick" so that is like a down vote. So why not just use "upvote"? It is easy to remember.
@Ghalib you can't downtick/downvote comments
user288256
Yeah I know. I mean instead of "uptick" why not just simply say "upvote" a comment?
user288256
A comment is something you can't downvote but upvote.
@Ghalib because it isn't really voting...
user288256
Okay.
21:26
@marcellothearcane Chrono Trigger is a great game
@Tonepoet lol...

I really think this should be closed!
There is no sentence for which the word is to be used in.
So many different words can fit there, and a good choice depends on the exact words that follow, which is not given in full.
This one is really a guessing game that has attracted 5 answers already.
It appears to me that the bigger the font size used in the answer, or the more lines used because of the formatting, the more upvotes it attracts. Weird, but true of ELU answers.
Contrary to what someone said earlier on the site, the credibility of the site is lost not because of these questions not being closed, but because answers with bigger fonts and more lines are being upvoted over better answers with smaller font size and fewer lines.
@marcellothearcane It's me! It's me! I'm talking about myself! When I say friend, it's me! I want people to think it's not me! But it is!
so ashamed
The truth does not set you free. It's that much more embarrassing.
Some truths set you free, and some lies also set you free.
It all depends on what truths, what lies, and what bondage.
@Mitch Hey, I have an instagram now at instagram.com/jasperjloy but I only have one pic there now, lol. Thought I would share with you!
@JasperLoy There are more lies than truths. Lies include all the negations of truths and all the in betweenies
@JasperLoy Nice. Like some others have mentioned here, I also do not bother with instagram. There is only so much time I have to do stuff online. With youtube at least the pictures are moving.
What do people put up on instagram other than selfies?
can't you do that on FB?
I also don't bother with FB
@Mitch LOL. I have a youtube channel now. I deleted 20 videos in the past, some of which you have seen, but soon I will sing again!
I don't have anything against any of these things. It's just I don't get the point.
22:22
@Tonepoet How do you feel the combat holds up amongst modern turn-based games?
@Mitch Instagram is like specifically for selfies. It's specialist.
@JasperLoy I don't think I saw all of them, but I did see a few.
Did you study voice?
@Mitch No, I just picked it up myself from listening to masters.
Which is to say from my barely musical ear you sound like you worked in an opera company.
@JasperLoy I find selfies hard to do. I always have to ask someone else to take one for me.
I have not been a pro singer before, but what I do know is that I have heard some pros singing and they are worse than me.
Which means that I have a good chance of turning pro.
22:25
@JasperLoy are you just singing from memory/ear, or do read music too?
@Cerberus That's difficult because I don't play many modern turn based games. However there's a very interesting dynamic where you can perform a variety of special moves which involve a certain pair or trio of characters.
@JasperLoy I wonder if there are any European style opera companies around there.
@Mitch I don't read music, which is one major obstacle to me going pro. But if someone is doing a talent search and sees me, then I will have a chance.
@Mitch There is no future for good musicians in Antarctica. If I go pro, I need to leave Antarctica as well.
@Tonepoet I got FFT at a discount on Android, €7.
22:27
@Mitch If I do math, I also need to leave Antarctica. Basically I cannot do anything in Antarctica. It sucks big time.
@JasperLoy I've heard sight-reading is a skill (i.e. takes practice). I was in choir when I was a kid, and we had paper sheets of music, but we just followed along with the piano that the choirmaster played for each part
I may play it in an Android emulator on my computer.
@Mitch To me, it is a difficult skill to master that doesn't seem to just take practice, but I don't know.
@JasperLoy Antarctica is a big place, I wouldn't be surprised if there are pockets of people who do the things you like. It's just hard to see where they are
@Mitch There are people doing music and math and what not in Antarctica, but seriously the atmosphere here is very bad and good people will not be recognised. The bad ones will rise to the top though.
@Mitch I know where they are, but I am saying there is really no future in Antarctica. They mostly suck at what they do.
22:30
@JasperLoy Speaking of math, our conversation is intertwined with Cerb's about Fast Fourier Transforms
I'm not sure why they'd wnt to pay 7 euros for it though
@Mitch Oh yes, I wanted to mention the FFT, LOL.
hahaha
people don't realize that math is all around them
@Mitch Hey, you may think I am very biased against Antarctica, but I formed my opinion over time. I really look at things and take a long time to think and then judge.
@JasperLoy I don't know. math is a skill/talent. maybe the math that those people do (the one's you say suck) just isn't exactly your kind of math. but it's still math and they're skilled at it.
Like some artists do landscapes, and some do still lifes
In French, still lifes are called still deaths
Explains a lot
@Cerberus Hmm, it's been a long time since I played, but it was a very memorable experience. The degree of character customization permitted makes for some rather interesting preparations, and allows for such a broad array of strategies.
22:34
@JasperLoy I know. I can't really talk, I'm not from Antarctica.
@Mitch Well, for the math, it's not just about the skill or talent. It's the whole attitude, like attitude towards teaching etc, and I really dislike the attitudes in Antarctica.
but the food is good there.
except maybe you only have KFC and you don't have Popeye's fried chicken.
If you don't have Popeye's that would be a shame
Well, food is not important to me. I don't live to eat, I only eat to live.
OMG. Eating is living!
I mean, don't go overboard.
mostly because you'll get a cramp and drown
from all that food
Basically, from the day I was born until now, I have been disappointed again and again by the attitudes of Antarctica people.
22:37
Just to forewarn you, most people around the world are pretty disappointing
maybe less than Antarcticans
What Antarctica is good for is telling people how good they are at certain things like math when the reality is otherwise.
but frankly, lots pof people would get a step up going there
They do this by manipulating statistical data.
I've heard Antarctica is a bit... controlling. because of the you know, 'cold'.
They will show you this and that and say hey look we are good at this.
22:39
China will take over the world
But if you critically examine the evidence you will see that it actually doesn't show that!
It shows something, but not that it is good!
And not many people have that level of thinking to see through the lies...
They seem very opportunistic and transactional and ... other stuff
pragmatic would be the nice way to say it
Exactly.
but sometimes at the expense of others.
You used all the right adjectives.
22:41
@Mitch They left out Antarctica on the UN flag.
@JohanLarsson What?
It's not on the Olympic flag
It's on the UFP flag, sorta.
My whole point @Mitch is just to share with a nice guy like you that what I think of Antarctica is not just some stupid bias because I am mentally ill, but something I have really thought very deeply about over a very long time...
@JasperLoy 'transactional' is a word I've only heard used recently. I think it means 'payment oriented' rather than... loyalty?
something like that
And I wouldn't even bother sharing with people whom I feel I have absolutely no connection with.
22:44
That's Earth on the left.
Or really our sun.
how do you know?
It's not obvious?
Because of the triangulation with Sirius and Vega
Hello @JohanLarsson nice hairstyle there! Are you still with the same girlfriend?
@JohanLarsson I misspoke. The stars of Earth, Vulcan, and Andoria. (the flag was before the Klingons joined up)
That's just science
22:50
Oh @Mitch recently I met someone from another planet, but I don't know if she will be Maria...
@JasperLoy Whoa. Shit. Another planet?
Where from? If that is answerable.
Which hemisphere?
