Q: Word for "item that can be bought or sold"

MaryI am looking for a single word like "product" but it means that it has monetary value and can be bought, sold, or traded. Specifically I'm trying to write about how Native Americans did not consider land something to be sold until Europeans came. I'd like to say Native Americans did not co...

About the adverbial use of solitary after.

"afterwards" is being abbreviated.
Does that^ sound better? @Færd

Well, the safe choice is afterwards, for sure.

"afterward" works too

Yes.
The characters are speaking colloquially there, I suppose.

Exactly.

"Can we do something after?" is never something I could write, but I don't know that I've never heard it. Just sounds a bit, I dunno, uneducated?

I wouldn't say "uneducated," more like "brief" or even "terse."

Could be.

If you want to speak fast, use short words :-)

So it doesn't sound unfamiliar to your ear at all.
@skullpatrol Aha.

@Cerberus Ironically my girlfriend has been running Kaspersky for ages and now seems to have a virus that won't let her enable any kind of virus detection.

@MattE.Эллен LOL. I sent you an email that day.

what day?
the day of the star?

Oh a few days ago, I don't remember.
The one where I talked about my current state.
@MattE.Эллен If so, it is best to restore the computer to factory settings.

@WillHunting yeah. I'm worried that what we'll have to do

@MattE.Эллен Well, it just takes a day to reapply all the updates. Just copy all the data somewhere else first.

12:37 PM
true, but what if the virus is in the data?
how can I tell what to back up if I can't scan it first?

Do you mean the virus could be in the user's documents?

yeah. I mean, it could be anywhere

@Færd If I was going to say something like that, I would say afterwards myself.

if not the main virus then the document that allowed it to be installed

Maybe copying the files somewhere else might enable the scan to take place on the new place.
Maybe you just cannot scan on the old place because the whole thing is infected.

12:39 PM
yeah. I guess I'll have to find a memory stick I never want to use again :D

I am just listing some possibilities. I don't really have a clearcut solution for such a problem.

Or maybe I'm just hearing things which aren't actually there.
That's also possible.

@MattE.Эллен If I were a sneaky person and had the time and enregy and a bunch of other reasons for not bothering, I would target the Kaspersky software as the actual vector for the viruses.
But man, getting up in the morning is enough. And you want me to think about things too?

1:25 PM
> So people are always like "oh you have heightened hearing..."
:39486151 I first heard that as "always like how you"
Her aspiration in "like oh" made it sound as though she were saying "like how"
I don't know that variable aspiration of unvoiced stops in English is a feature of any accent in particular. It can happen in several different scenarios without this "meaning" anything in particular, nor is it entirely consistent outside of the start of stressed syllable.
But when we hear it anywhere else than that, we have the natural tendency to mis-identify the sound we heard has having been the start of a word or at least of a stressed syllable, even when it is not. That's what's happened here, I think.

Is "happens" here grammatically correct: "I thought it might be interesting to see what happens if he did that" If "yes" then why not "happened"? Because everything is backshifted there after "thought".

Her natural accent doesn't have any easily identifiable regional features in it beyond those of (whilom?) standard "broadcast English" in the States.
Oh hah.

@Ahmed I think that sentence calls for "I thought it might be interesting to see what would happen if he did that."

@Tonepoet oh okay, thanks.

@Tonepoet Beyond that instance of aspiration in "like oh" (which I doubt would be repeatable) can you hear her saying anything in particular that sounds in any way different from how that same sound would come out in your own accent?
Also do keep in mind that she's hyper-elocuting here.

1:38 PM
@tchrist It's hard for me to determine if we share accents or not, but nothing strikes me as especially odd otherwise.

@Tonepoet what accent is yours?

@Mitch It certainly sounded weird to me reading "How can I tell people that me and my girlfriend don't want children of our own?" If we remove the girlfriend, it would be like "How can I tell people that me [] don't want children of [my] own?"
Hence my edit.

@NVZ What do you mean? The same is true of your edited version: How can I tell people that my girlfriend and I don't want children of our own? would become How can I tell people that my [] and I don't want children of our own?
Why would that be a relevant argument?
I mean, I also prefer my GF and I over me and my GF, but I don't see how your argument is helping either case.

@terdon You haven't removed the entire noun group.
As opposed to NVZ's example.

@Cerberus How can I tell people that my [] don't want children of our own?
How do you mean?

The noun group to be removed would be my girlfriend.
And you have removed the entire second noun group there.

@Cerberus OK, so How can I tell people that [] and I don't want children of our own?
I just don't understand what removing it is supposed to demonstrate.

3:42 PM
Now remove the conjunction.

OK, that would become [. . . ] I don't want children which is grammatical but a completely different statement.

It would be the same operation that NVZ did.

Ah, so the issue is that I want foo is fine, while me want foo is not. OK

Yes.

Gotcha

3:44 PM
So the idea is, when you have a subject consisting of two noun groups with and/or, then each of those groups alone should be able to function as the subject.

NVZ
@terdon You missed the point. I was not talking about removing girlfriend the word alone.

@NVZ I did indeed yes, but Cerberus explained it. Thanks.

@Tonepoet I expect quite the opposite, actually.
The ELUers have a very particular set of skills. Skills to express ideas in the best words. The contents of the answers will definitely be subjective, but that's okay. There are no authoritative bodies or scientific articles to quote for most of the posts there.

Can I use these interchangeably:
1) "I like to ask for occasional advice"
2) "I occasionally like to ask for advice".

@Ahmed no
"occasional advice" is not the same as "occasionally ask"

oh okay, thanks.
So what does the first one mean? Looked similar to me in meaning.
Ah yes, "asking" and "getting advice" are different things.
@Mitch Yep, Youtube is crap except for songs' searches and silly tutorials.

Q: Do I need to put a comma after 'instead' in this sentence?

Kathy Wadd-value project: a project, particularly an investment, where you are not just going to buy the property and hold onto it, but instead, you will add something to this property to create a higher value than it had to begin with.

@Feeds that's no single word request! What tom foolery is this?

@Ahmed I think they usually mean the same thing, but the first sentence might be more ambiguous because occasional advice could also reference advice pertaining to a certain occasion, at least hypothetically speaking.
@MattE.Эллен Somebody is probably parsing the tag name incorrectly, as a request for information regarding a single known word. This is the second time I've seen feeds do this recently.

Anonymous
Correct the sentence so that the initial phrase refers to the subject of the sentence: "Young and inexperienced, the trip sounded easy to me." I was thinking along the lines of: "Young and inexperienced, I thought that the trip would be easy." But that deviates too much from the original sentence...

Anonymous
Any ideas ?

@Blue Does the problem involve a dangling participle?

5:31 PM
@Tonepoet I suppose we can't blame feeds for doing its job (i.e. posting SWRs into chat)

@MattE.Эллен I don't think I've ever seen a positive @Feeds

yelling at feeds is yelling into the voids, so I don't think it matters

@MattE.Эллен Or more accurately speaking, posting questions which are tagged S.W.R. in chat. It just can't know any better. Hypothetically, somebody could abuse the system by mistagging a question on purpose just so it gets posted into the chat feed, for additional publicity.

@Tonepoet true. luckily it's not a widely advertised system

Or I could post a S.W.R. of my own and star it. >_>...

@MattE.Эллен Have you read my email? =)
@marcellothearcane I don't like the feeds myself.

I was wondering if you can turn them off

I think some do like it, those who added it to this room, so it's fine.

I don't know, things keep changing here.

okay..
mods can change what it posts

@MattE.Эллен 'Tis something I've been seriously considering ever since tchrist implemented the feeds.There's technically no rule against it (as far as I know), and I think I know how the system works well enough to pose a S.W.R. which complies with the demands we usually make of them by now. Check a thesaurus for every possible answer, invent some contrived contextual sentence where I might use it and specify why I need such a word. I even have a question in mind...

I think tchrist set it to swrs

@WillHunting yes. sorry, I've been busy recently

5:46 PM
@MattE.Эллен That's good for you. It means you are doing happy things. =)

@WillHunting well, I've been working :D
@Tonepoet yes, that should be fine. Gaming the system isn't specifically against the rules, it's all about how you do it (e.g. sock puppet up voting)

@MattE.Эллен I think serial voting is a controversial issue though. What if I really think that all the posts of a person are good or bad? The automatic reversal of serial votes and the monitoring of voting by moderators on a long term basis is only an imperfect solution to the problem.

@MattE.Эллен I'll keep that in mind. For now though, I'm not in the habit of asking Stack Exchange for any favors and I'm not sure if and when it would be a good idea to start doing so.

@Tonepoet I see, thanks.

@WillHunting yes, there can be false positives, but I think that's a very small number. possibly 0.
