> ... I also have some contacts in the theater and dance. Maybe we could go to a show, and after you could talk to the actors.
That use of after (meaning afterwards) is incorrect, isn't it?
It's from an English coursebook published by Oxford University Press. I was helping someone with the book, and suddenly this.
Even the book itself, in the lesson previous to this one, condemns this use of after.

@Færd "Incorrect" may be a strong term, but I sure don't like it much. I'd say afterwards or after that.

Thanks. So it probably doesn't sound like a heinous crime to some people.
It's a common mistake with learners, so it sounds utterly non-native to me.

It sounds wrongish to me.
But not wholly unheard.

2:57 AM
OK.

"Can we do something after?" is never something I could write, but I don't know that I've never heard it. Just sounds a bit, I dunno, uneducated?

Maybe.
But it's a good idea for an English coursebook to adhere to the grammar it teaches.
(from the same book)
.
So I've been teaching English for the last few months. To beginners, mostly. And I'm finding it positively detrimental to my own English.
I'm going to give it up, or go much easier on the working hours.

3:17 AM
@Færd Hmm that makes sense.
Never thought about it.
@tchrist Exactly, or perhaps colloquial in a provincial kind of way?
Or perhaps colloquial in an older register?
A bit like using immediately as a conjunction.

@Cerberus The effect seemed so obvious to me.
Maybe because my English is unstable itself.

I know the feeling from speaking English with people don't speak it well, just not as a teacher.

I find myself stammering and shoveling for words when I'm consciously trying to dilute and downgrade my language.
I feel so inhibited.
@Cerberus And you teach languages for a living?

Well, partly.
But mostly Latin and Greek.

OK.

3:59 AM
@M.A.R. What? I couldn't hear you from inside my Dosbox.

I don't know anyone who uses Win 95. Or 98.

@Cerberus Yes, maybe that.

Incidentally, before can be used alone more freely than after.

Quite so.

Q: One word for "tend to ignore"?

bonCodigoI am reading an economist article. For some reason the writing seems extremely simple and colloquial. For an exercise, I want to re-write it by retaining the arguments, refutation, facts but by changing the wordings. What could be a word for "tend to ignore"? (ignore something good, or bad) ...

tchrist, you here?
Can we add a direct link to the section titled "How can I ask about checking my text?" under help/on-topic?
If not, can we add a link to the help/on-topic within the "proofreading questions are offtopic" banner?
Oh, found it. Cannot have a direct link.

If someone would write a canonical Q&A in meta listing some of our most common grievances, we can handle some future queries more swiftly. (Example question 1. Why am I getting downvotes on this post even though it is a good post with multiple upvotes.)
This will probably be like belling the cat. I'm not up to it myself.

Q: Word or idiom to describe someone sabotaging something and then bragging from it not happening?

fedorquiSay you have one goal. For example, to run a mile below 4 minutes. You train hard, do all your best to accomplish that goal, etc. Somehow there is a person who does not want you to be successful: they keep telling you that you are uncapable of running that fast. Moreover, they do all that they c...

Q: Term for something or someone that receives an invoice addressed to a certain organization, but is sent to a different person or organization

MaveBecause this is for an API, it's a must that it's short and explanatory, so that someone who consumes the API knows what the field does, without having to go the documentation (even though it's explained in there). It'll be all lowercase, with spaces being substituted for underscores. We've had s...

Q: What is a verb for "speak honestly"?

oconnor0What is a verb to describe someone speaking honestly? Instead of "Joe speaks honestly about today", I'd like to say "Joe honests about today". But an actual, real word.

5:00 PM
@RegDwigнt @skullpatrol @tchrist It's a "ve" intersection.

Hello. Am I using "before that" correctly here the second time as well?

In the sense of having a romantic relationship, what's the difference in meaning between “go out with someone” and “go with someone”?

@b_jonas Once you've said you are using the two in the sense of having a romantic relationship, nothing. They then both mean having a romantic relationship.

7:33 PM
@RegDwigнt that's where the police officer stands

@MetaEd Thank you.
Another question. For a ballpoint pen that is reusable, what do you call the replaceable part that is a container for the ink but also contains the ballpoint tip? Is it a “cartridge” or “casette” or something else?

@b_jonas the ink reservoir part? It's called an ink reservoir

7:50 PM
@M.A.R. “ink reservoir”? ok

@b_jonas also probably called a couple of other things
Even "ink container" works

@b_jonas Generally a "refill". Often a "cartridge".

@MetaEd right, refill

If I had to bet, I'd bet we've been saying "cartridge" far longer than "refill".
@MattE.Эллен My heart beat 1,200 times.
