2:11 AM
@englishstudent Using.
Or if I'm being really finicky, neither because sentences shouldn't start with conjunctions no matter which permissivist sanctions it. =P
And yes, I realize these sentences start with conjunctions: So sue me.

2:27 AM
@Tonepoet So is not traditionally used as a conjunction.

@Cerberus That is true, but it's so often thought of as one that it earned a place in the FANBOYS mnemonic of coordinating conjunctions, so it works well enough for the purposes of a gag. Funnily enough, Noah Webster didn't categorize but as a conjunction either, or even because.
Well, at least, not according to the searchable online editions of the dictionary, which might misrepresent the actual printed form.

But has been used as a conjunction since forever...
But perhaps its adverbial use is older.
Or is it prepositional?
No, adverbial.

You could call it that.

Yeah, that confuses me.

2:36 AM
But particles are basically a kind of adverb.

Particle? That makes more sense actually.

Oh, I read particle!

@Cerberus It says part. so it could be either.

In Dutch, it can be used adverbially or prepositionally.
Must be particle.
Buiten means "outside".

Hmm...
What I really need to be doing, for the sake of due diligence, is looking at a Google Books or Internet Archive scan of his dictionary, or maybe the printed facsimile.
So please 'scuse me for a moment @Cerberus.

3:25 AM
@Cerberus Sigh, I do hate the online searchable dictionaries sometimes. I'm almost certain they are all commonly sourced from some sort of incomplete transcription work. Webster does indeed classify but as a conjunction, in a separate entry that the more easily searchable editions of the dictionaries lack. This problem is somewhat common.
Or maybe it's just my fault for not reading carefully on second though.
Yeah, it's my fault. It's there. Blech.

1 hour later…
4:43 AM
@Tonepoet Good, good.

1 hour later…
6:04 AM
Does anyone ever say bad, bad?

6:24 AM
@JamesBond Maybe to a dog or an extremely young child? I'd need more context to know if it makes sense otherwise.

6 hours later…
12:32 PM
It's Fri 5 May, or 555. Should we be worried?
@Tonepoet Maybe each dictionary copies a bit of all the others whenever they make a new edition.

1:11 PM
@JamesBond Not what I meant.
I mean online transcriptions of the same dictionary.

2:05 PM
[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Offensive answer detected: Pronunication of "Dijkstra" by Jake Holland on english.SE

Has everyone else already tried the google translate trick where you repeat two non-latin characters from the same language over and over again, to see what you get?
σοσοσοσοσοσος is different to σοσοσοσοσοσοσ

@MattE.Эллен WTF?

google translate will "translate" any old gibberish :D
@terdon ωερφγιιιηα is good, too

Wow. I actually read that as γεωγραφία (geography). The mind's a weird thing.

:D it'll do anything to communicate

2:18 PM
Oh wow. Ok, the googlemind is an even stranger thing.

2:29 PM
It's a quiet Friday night here.

let off some bangers

Well, it's quiet because I am at home. =)

throw a house party
out of a window

What languages are you learning or speaking other than English and Greek?
I wonder why people say 'it's all Greek to me' when they should say 'it's all Chinese to me', since Chinese is infinitely more difficult to write than Greek. =)
At least people who do science have already been using some Greek symbols. =)

only Greek and English at the moment

2:33 PM
I haven't sent you an email for a while. Maybe I should send one soon.

I watched 19 Bond movies, 7 more to go. My favourite Bond actor is Roger Moore.
Many people like Sean Connery though.

Roger Moore, eh?

I think after Daniel Craig retires, they should make me the next Bond. =)

Pierce Brosnan gave us Golden Eye, so he gets extra points for that
@JamesBond Yes! write to the producers

2:36 PM
I am watching them in chronological order, starting from the first one in 1962.

That was George Lazenby?

First one is Sean Connery!

oh!
Lazenby was second

It seems that Bond has become a British icon.
I like it that they all speak with a British accent.

An American accented Bond wouldn't be right

2:38 PM
The man is a British agent, after all.

That's why the Americans made Bourne, which is also me. =)

A Bond with an American accent would be like a cockney Captain America.

I can imagine an Indian Bond, but I doubt it would sell
@terdon lol

What do you mean "us", Kemosabe?

James Bond, Jason Bourne, and my Chinese name is also JB. =)

2:39 PM
@JamesBond Sacrilege!

His superpower is codetalking.

@JamesBond By the way, in Greek we do say It's all Chinese to me. :)

Oh! I think I have heard some say 'it's all Russian to me'.

There's an upswell of support for Idris Elba to be the next Bond. That would be cool

Oh man, that would be brilliant!
The man has presence and he can act to boot!

2:43 PM
I really prefer M to be a man and not a woman. Not sexist, but the M played by Bernard Lee is so good.

Is also drop dead gorgeous which helps.

Of course, Judi Dench has her charm as M, but Bernard Lee is the best M for me.

Hell, I'm straight and I can't keep my eyes off him. I can't imagine what his effect would be if I liked men.

There are 24 Eon productions of Bond and 2 non-Eon ones. 1 of the 2 non-Eon productions is a parody.
Initially the movies were based on the novels, but lately the novels are based on the movies. =)

2:49 PM
I'm based on a novel of a film of a game of a song

You, baby Matt? =)

nah, I made it up

Is there a good place to compare by hearing or whatever Irish, Scottish, Welsh and English English?
Actually I am not sure what I am talking about.
I think I am wondering about the accents in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England.

well, the BBC News channel at them moment has Scottish, Welsh and English people on it, due to the nationwide local elections
well, not quite nationwide
no elections are being held in Northern Ireland

Ah, and it seems there is still a possibility that Brexit can be not followed through.

2:55 PM
Unless something drastic happens, like the supreme court finds that the Government weren't allowed to raise Article 50, then Brexit is happening.

Can the new government after elections revoke Brexit?

I don't know. Since the process has started I don't think so. It would be good if they could.

Maybe the Queen can do something about it. =)

But since it's likely to be a landslide Tory majority, there's no hope of that anyway

I do like the Queen. She is a very nice old lady. =)

2:57 PM
I don't think the Queen wants to go against the will of the majority of the people who voted
Monarchs don't tend to come out of those situations fully intact

Aha. In this case though, only a small margin, like Trump.
Very interesting that in both cases, it is a very, very small margin.
By the way, I have watched the 3 telemovies starring Rowan Atkinson in the Inspector Maigret series. =)

It does make it look like there is a big divide in both cases, but I don't think that's accurate.

Unlike Mr Bean, Maigret is very, very serious.

It's not there are two large groups of people who hold completely opposing views.

3:03 PM
@JamesBond I haven't seen maigret, but Rowan Atkinson has a good range.

@terdon Aha. The site seems to take a while to load.

It's just two groups of people who hold opposing views on one particular subject. And they weren't allowed any nuance in the expression of their views

@MattE.Эллен Do you know he actually acted in one of the Bond movies? =)

@JamesBond oh? Which one?

3:05 PM
@MattE.Эллен It's better to have additional groups in the middle!

@MattE.Эллен Never Say Never Again, which also has Kim Basinger in it.

I want a zillow for people, to tell me how much a person is worth as I walk by them
Wait... that's one of the darker of a Black Mirror episodes

@Cerberus Group theory is a branch of mathematics. =)

@Mitch I think there were plans for apps like that. I'm not sure they made it to market, though

They're gonna do it for doctors
But not profs
Nobody cares about teachers anymore

3:07 PM
@JamesBond Then just add a couple of numbers.

Talking about apps, my friend has been using Coffee Meets Bagel, a dating app, and he has already dated 10 people!

Are you a coffee or a bagel?

@Cerberus Aha! Number theory is also a branch of mathematics. =)

@MattE.Эллен that's just plain wrong

@Mitch just use ((Twitter follow count) + (Youtube subscriber count))/(number of failed marriages plus one) as a benchmark for worth

3:08 PM
Haha

@Mitch I think I am a nut. =)

I make myself laugh
Here's a joke I hadn't heard before.

@Cerberus it's better to be recognised as being a member of various groups

I just told it to myself

@MattE.Эллен Is it true that the British newspapers usually use 'recognise' and not the Oxford spelling 'recognize'?

3:10 PM
@JamesBond probably. I haven't checked

Oxford. Pfft

Yes, Oxford not only has the comma but also the spelling.

Also the shoes

@englishstudent I have to think about the age/programming thing. Will take me more brain cells than I have at the moment

Do you know that the Oxford style guide is called 'New Hart's Rules'?
It is something like the Chicago Manual of Style for OUP.

3:12 PM
@MattE.Эллен shirts?

The Oxford spelling serves to better reflect the origin of some of these words.

@Mitch those too

While CMOS covers punctuation in detail, NHR doesn't but merely lists some problematic points for consideration.

@JamesBond surprisingly cheap

@MattE.Эллен Yes. You should really buy from bookdepository.com and not just amazon.co.uk. I get almost all my books from the former now.

3:14 PM
I get most of mine from Google these days

@MattE.Эллен not everybody does twitter. Or FB. Or those other things I don't do. What I'm saying is I've failed

I didn't like to point it out...

It's free shipping worldwide, even for a five dollar book.

@Mitch it's only a guide. don't put yourself down. shifts Mitch down the list

There is also Instagram. I have been following Jacob Sartorius on his instagram. =)

3:17 PM
@MattE.Эллен Great. That gets me a net worth of 0. Thank you Matt!

Is he the convicted murderer?

LOL

@terdon I think we should adjust the equation for SE reps, too

Oooh! Yes :)
I just hit 100k on U&L yesterday. Still kinda chuffed about it. It's been ages since I last cared about a rep milestone.

@JamesBond sorry, I got confused with Oscar Pistorius

3:18 PM
@MattE.Эллен Well, Jacob is the next Justin Bieber. =)

I hear Troy Sivan is also popular with the youth

@MattE.Эллен Don't let them confuse you with the murderer.

@terdon nice! I gain rep so slowly I don't think I'll be alive to see gross 100K, let alone on a single account :D

I think 20k is good enough, no need to get 100k, unless it's cash.

@MattE.Эллен make it a bucket list item. Then you'll have to live forever
Always have a backup impossible task in case trolls upvite you to death

3:24 PM
lol

I know there are people here who subscribe to the online OED. Is there anyone who subscribes to the online MW Unabridged?

@MattE.Эллен nice. Now the pressure is off I can relax.

Recently I discovered the existence of the latter.
It's at unabridged.merriam-webster.com

The former has always been a concrete thing
I subscribe to the opinion that UD is entertaining
It's pretty cheap

very-abridged.mrm-wsr.com
they pay you to read that one
@Mitch and naaaasty

3:31 PM
@Mitch Not as good as xkcd.

@MattE.Эллен I will share a secret with you. Typing m-w.com redirects to merriam-webster.com

I won't get paid to read that, though

Now how many users on ELU know that? =)

more than none

Also, typing bn.com redirects to barnesandnoble.com. =)

3:38 PM
mw.com goes somewhere Chinese

LOL, thanks for sharing the secret.
I think it means 'this domain is for sale', LOL.
It also says 'don't add as friend', LOL.

@MattE.Эллен Oh, sure. But as political parties.

@Cerberus oh. hmmmm. In terms of political parties it's best to back the most compassionate and then threaten to kill everyone who disagrees with you :p

Off with their heads?
I back the Queen.

3:47 PM
The Guillotine Left

@Cerberus Y-a-t-il une nouvelle reine française?

@Cerberus yesterday the news was filled with "Prince Consort retires" but I'm not entirely sure I understand what that means. He's still Prince Consort

Retired people don't have to get up and go to work every day.
I get the idea that he's getting tired of it. Can you blame him?

No. 60 years is a long time to do any job

@tchrist Il faut attendre encore deux jours!
@MattE.Эллен Ah, I read that too; perhaps he will no longer cut ribbons?
@tchrist It seems your queen is doing even worse in the polls, though.
Still, over a third of the votes to the extreme right will be rather shocking.
But it is of course an effect of a choice between only two alternatives.
She got only 21% or so of the 'real' votes.

3:56 PM
@Cerberus yeah, basically he's retiring from public life. I suppose that's retiring, but he isn't losing any titles.

@James Bond relevant

@MattE.Эллен I suppose the word 'retire' doesn't have a legal meaning in this sense?

yeah
I bet he's got a good pension, though

Probably!

4:11 PM
Best bedsitter ever
But is 'e 'appy?

so the more answers you post, the more rep you have?
and the more questions you post the more rep you have
I guess if I want enough rep to retire to the bahamas on, I'd best get posting

@MattE.Эллен That doesn't show rep as far as I can tell. It's the number of questions per user.
So you have one user with ~3k questions and the vast majority at under 500.

Yeah, it says something else
@terdon Gordon Linoff
Oh no wait
He has 3,000 answers this year

@Cerberus J'en ai une?

4:17 PM
I just want the answer to one question
What time is it?

Elle.

Shit I'm late
Vogue

Qui?

Elle est degenerate.

4:20 PM
@Cerberus Une autre reine qui fait ce qu’elle fait au nom du pourpre aussi.

@terdon oh! it needs better labels
@Cerberus she's so dumb, she can't spell people.

Du pourpre de quelle ligne royale?

peut-être

The Le Pens in 1988.

Mais non!

4:22 PM
@Cerberus Who's that wearing the trash bag?

They were given that house by a rich supporter in his will.
@terdon A pen in a trash bag.

Uncool man. Themes the new rags

Never knew Vlad the Impaler voted in France.

It is clear that they do not belong in that house...

Ce seraient Les Pens.
Green screen shots.

4:25 PM
No, it is their real house.
I am so happy with our extreme-right here, I must say.
Much better than other people's.
But also 'blond'.
Why is the extreme right always dyed blond in a horribly failed way?

Not wannabes, the real thing

I truly wonder how Le Pen can have a gay second man when she wants to abolish gay marriage.

@Cerberus The Groningers?

They're not right-wing?
They're communists.

@Cerberus people are idiots

4:28 PM
Well.
I can't tell the difference: the periphery blurs in the distance.

Our extreme right is pro-gay and pro-Jews.
@tchrist It comes from the south here, the Catholic lands.

A southern wind

Indeed.
Although it is also big in Rotterdam, the Hague, Almere (new city where there was only the sea floor not 50 years ago).

@Cerberus Ours aren't.
Idiots can't even get that right.

Haha.
But how can they be Aryan without the hair?

4:35 PM
@Cerberus No, no, no, they've explained that to all those ignorant fools who call them Neo-Nazis: "We're not Nazi! How could we be? We're Greek!"

Heh.
Well, they can still be fascists...

Aren't they cute?

Is that the Hitler hand?

@Cerberus Nah, not in this case. That's just the Mediterranean male posturing hand.

(By the way, I was reading yesterday about an attempt by the English to find out whether a Dutch secret radio operator had been arrested and replaced by a German in the war. The Englishman ended his message with "HH", to which the 'Dutchman' immediately replied with "HH".)
@terdon Ah, I see.

4:40 PM
@Cerberus Heil Hitler and Hi Honey?

Heil Hitler both.
It was the standard way of ending a radio conversation in the German army, "HH" – "HH".
So the German betrayed himself by replying intuitively.

Yes. I thought it had some other meaning in Dutch or something.

Nope.
But unfortunately the English secret service vied for power with some other branch.
So they never let their bosses know that the secret radio had been compromised.
And they sent another 50 Dutchmen to Holland by parachute and boat, telling the secret radiomen where they could be picked up.
They were all arrested and killed by the Germans, of course.

That doesn't sound like due process

Das Englandspiel ("The England Game"), also called Unternehmen Nordpol (Operation North Pole), was an enormous counter intelligence operation launched by the German intelligence agency, the Abwehr, during World War II. German forces captured Allied resistance agents operating in the Netherlands and used the agents' codes to fool the Allies into continuing to provide the agents with information and supplies. About 50 Allied agents were identified, captured, and executed. == Details == The British Special Operations Executive (SOE) was sending Dutch intelligence agents into the occupied Netherlands...
@Mitch The Nazis didn't like due process.

4:44 PM
Talk to them first before execution.

2 hours later…
6:17 PM
@Cerberus Ha
if Le Pen gets president, it would be terrible, I mean much more than Trump
it can't be serious to have someone like that president

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇

6:38 PM
@RegDwigнt Hello Reg, long time no see, lol.

@caub I know. But she won't.
@RegDwigнt Nice.

@Cerberus Are you still using Windows XP? How is it working?

@JamesBond Yes.
It works fine.

I want to report on Windows 10.

Although more and more software requires a newer Windows.
Does it work?

6:45 PM
In the last 6 months, it has crashed thrice.
Yesterday I discovered that an update overdue for a month was not applied, and I had to manually download 1 GB, no warning at all, I had to check the updates centre to find out.
So I think Windows 10 isn't as great as I expected it to be.
Maybe it's because my hardware is on the low end.
@caub I don't like Trump or Le Pen or May or Putin.

@JamesBond Hmm that is not good.

Maybe it's because my processor is not powerful. Still, it's a 64-bit with 4 GB RAM.

7:06 PM
What's your processor?
Unless it's extremely old, I think Windows 10 should run on it.

It's Intel Celeron, lower than Pentium it seems.
It is meant to run W10, because it was preinstalled.
Maybe it isn't the hardware, maybe it's just that W10 isn't excellent.

Which Celeron?
I don't think that is the problem.

N3060.
1.60 GHz.

That's fairly new.
It should be fine.
It may be some other, faulty component of the hardware.

Anything under Pentium is old, but for XP user, it is new. =)

7:15 PM
Your processor was launched in 2016.
That's new.

OIC.

Mine is from 2008.
I'm assuming it is in a laptop?

Yes.

Right.

I paid a very low price for the laptop.

7:16 PM
Crashes can be caused by many things.
How much?

Only 400 dollars in Antarctican currency.
There are laptops here that sell for 2000 dollars.
In other news, I just finished watching the 20th Bond movie, so 6 more to go.

400 is €260ish.
That is a cheap laptop, but not absurdly cheap.
New or second hand?

Brand new.
Any lower price and I will only have 32 GB HDD.
I just changed my picture. Refresh to see it!
Do you like it?

The price is actually similar to what you'd pay here.
Does it happen to be a Medion Akoya?

I have no idea what that is!

7:33 PM
Medion is a brand.

Oh, no it's a Lenovo. I thought you were referring to my pic, lol.

7:46 PM
Hi all,
what is the name of this object?
https://www.facebook.com/images/emoji.php/v8/z63/1/32/26a1.png

it's a lightning bolt
I think some people call it a thunderbolt

1 hour later…
9:15 PM
How is the suffering of one human being, even one creature, different from the suffering of all? If it ails you, one example can, or must, be enough to ail you at the utmost level.
So why doesn't a humanitarian or environmental activist give up after seeing their beloved ones annihilated and destroyed and ruined again and again and again? Because there's more to save?!
We're all so selfish at root.

Where do these musings come from?
And why should the suffering of many not weigh heavier than that of one?

Was just watching BBC's Planet Earth.
If it's infinitely important for you, as some make it out to be, then it's the same, whether you grieve for one or two or a million.
But if it's just another hobby, then yeah, the suffering of many does weigh heavier.
Before Planet Earth had been listening to Chomsky talk about existential threats facing 'our species'.
And I'm an emotional person with a strong moral drive. So I empathize with those friends of mine who pursue these goals as ultimate ones with absolute value. But it just doesn't add up that way.
Two in the morning. Can't keep the nightmares waiting any longer.
(Too many subjectless sentences, BTW. Gotta do something 'bout it.)

9:58 PM
@Færd Ah, OK, yes, the suffering of your best friend might be more important to you than that of a billion, to be sure.
I hope you are sleeping well.
