2:00 PM
Yes, @KitZ.Fox, I will have those words in my next recording tomorrow
:p

kthx

"You can use my name for practicing your final consonants."
You got me there, funny thing is I kinda remembered your name when I were doing the recording, it was like "Kiz... The Fox"
But I decided to leave the "Fox" out as I can't pronounce it without getting the "x" right

x is a fun one, gotta include that

I mean I tried pronouncing it using Google Now and it only recognize that word as "Foss"

Kid the foe

2:04 PM
So I had to leave "The Fox" part out in my recording, so that, it's only "Kiz" as you could hear

Kitz F. Ox.

@johnchae wow, lame
does it help if I say "fox" is pronounced like "fahks"?
(I don't know IPA)

fawks

@Ixrec Hehe, I don't think it works
:p

fahks makes you sound midwestern.

2:06 PM
Yeah, as an Asian, I think we have a lot of mistakes in common, like "s" vs "x" vs "sh"...

I don't.
Maybe you meant East Asian?
And that would be interesting.

Also, mostly my people and my Chinese friend can't pronounce these words right
They are: "Fix" and "Fish"

Really? I'm surprised about "x". Do you have problems with "k" and "s"? Is either of those hard to pronounce?

Yes @PhMgBr I think so, East Asian
@terdon: Can you give me some examples of those?

@johnchae And "Fisk"?

2:09 PM
@PhMgBr It's easy

@johnchae So and kill, for example.

^^

I'm asking because X is just K+S so if you can pronounce those, you should have no problems with X either.

@terdon: No, I can pronounce them right without breaking a sweat
:p

And yet X is hard for you?

2:11 PM
Yes, @terdon, I always mistake it with "s"
Like I mentioned above
Google Now only recognized that word as "Foss"
I mean with my pronunciation

You aren't hitting the k hard enough then.
Foks.

OK, but is it also hard to pronounce? I can see why you could have trouble differentiating between S and X, but pronouncing X is just like pronouncing K+S.

It's probably on account of having the consonant sounds um...in tandem?

Hmm, is it really that easy?
:p

@johnchae Of course it's easy for us. Natives find all sounds in their language easy. That doesn't mean it's easy for anybody else.

2:14 PM
I'll try it later, and yeah, will be getting it covered in my next recording
I mean "s" vs "x"

"It's easy for US" might be one of Trump's mottoes.

'x' has a definite 'k' sound at the front. For me, 'x' and 's' sound nothing alike.

I am always fascinated by how non-natives can confuse what, to me, are two very different sounds. Of course, I also have the problem when listening to other languages. My French friends were always amused by how many vowels I confused. As far as they were concerned, they were totally different but sounded almost identical to me.

Oh Yeaaaaaahh
Thank you so much guys
I never thought it would be that easy
I just tried it with Google Now

@terdon Same for me. I could never get French verb endings to sound right.

2:16 PM
?

and it immediately recognize the word exactly
Yay

Great. Add it to your practice list.

@KitZ.Fox It got easier with time. After a few years living there, I could tell the difference but I couldn't always reproduce it.

I got it

@johnchae Nice!

2:16 PM
fox, box, socks.
rocks, talks, walks.

Thank you so so much

@terdon I'm beyond hopeless at the tones in Chinese, but then Japanese native speakers always get "l" and "r" mixed up in English words

You guys don't know how I feel right now since I just solved one of the big problems since learning English
I mean, before this, I always tried to avoild these words

@Ixrec That is because of retroflexion.

I mean the words with "x" at the ending
"I'm beyond hopeless at the tones in Chinese, but then Japanese native speakers always get "l" and "r" mixed up in English words"
@Ixrec, As an Vietnamese, I don't have those problems at all

2:19 PM

Q: Chat: how do I use it right?

MitchNow that I've figured out how to get to chat, I see that there's kind of a lot there. I see all sorts of weird things there. Before I ask about what's appropriate behavior, I'd like to know just how to use all the bells and whistles. I get that you type in the box at the bottom, but: What if ...

This might help you.

lol

@Ixrec Yes, I believe Chinese also have that. That's exactly the sort of thing I was thinking about. Apparently, as children, we can hear and distinguish between a huge variety of sounds. As we age, our ears get specialized and become extremely good at dealing with the phonemes we are often exposed to, but we loose the broad range of infancy.
So, by the time we reach adulthood, we are simply incapable of differentiating certain sounds. Those who were raised exposed to those sounds can do it with no problem and cannot understand why we can't.

There's an 'l' sound, but the 'r' sound is retroflected, with the tongue curled back against the hard palate.

L and R are a case in point. They don't sound remotely similar to me. It would never occur to me that anyone could have trouble distinguishing them.

So 'r's sound very similar to an English 'l'.

2:21 PM
@Ixrec, I have a Chinese friend, and I once asked him if he ever found that sound to be easy to mistake with, he said immediately: NO

@KitZ.Fox Do they though? I can imagine how they would, but have you ever actually confused them?

So I think it's just for Japanese

Oh, OK

No, it's for Chinese.
@terdon I can record what I sound like, but I'm not a native Chinese speaker.

the l vs r thing definitely affects Japanese, no idea about other East Asian languages

2:23 PM
I have confused them before when I couldn't see the person talking or couldn't figure out the word from context.

I'm not sure, but I asked him to try pronouncing this word "Like" and he easly got it right

But Chinese people wouldn't confuse their own l and r, it's the English l that sounds kind of in between.

While I heard a lot of Japanese pronounce that word like "Rike"

@Ixrec perfectly acceptable content here on chat (and even main ELU). as long as you quote things to ask about their usage it is OK, we are talking about language usage not actually using it to be vulgar or mean or whatever is flaggable. Of course, you shouldn't use quoting as a thinly veiled attempt at using vulgarity/meanness.

@KitZ.Fox Ah, right. I had understood that you consider R and L to sound similar in English.

2:25 PM
Oh, no. That's not what I meant.

@Mitch I wasn't suggesting it was offensive or flag-worthy, I just said I opened up this chat room to see what the context was
(I've been in flagstorms that got chatrooms frozen for days, don't need to tell me not to overflag things)

I find my own L to be more palatial and less dental than the Chinese L.
It's funny because Mitch visited your chatroom in the same fashion. I think. Checking in on a flag and then hanging out.

I think it happens a lot to 10kers

Yeah. It's probably good to circulate. I was thinking we ought to have some kind of exchange program.

I did that. I went to Cornell for my semester abroad.

chat.stackexchange.com/?tab=all&sort=active sort of comes close to being that list, though I think it's just sorting by last spoken timestamp instead of some measure of overall chattiness

@Ixrec which may be slightly different from other chats. profanity seemed to be acceptable in other chats for awhile until the January slapdown. On ELU chat we were never tolerant of using profanity except sarcastically or in quoting, but the sarcasm reason was too much, so that is not recommended.
@KitZ.Fox upstate. a different world.

@Mitch What happened in January?

@Mitch Um. We were pretty liberal with profanity. We just didn't direct it at anyone. Usually.

@terdon Yes. I was trying to say that, but probably wasn't clear.

@Mitch That was November/December.

mmmm. Ancillary. Have you all read Ancillary Justice?

@Mitch Of course it is.

@KitZ.Fox Oh. Hm... right.

@freebird that's a problem.

I wouldn't call it strict, everything I've heard so far sounds like the common sense I was assuming in every other chat room and forum on the internet that isn't 4chan or Reddit

@Ixrec Or Mos?

2:38 PM
the issues Mos had (past tense!) were entirely unrelated to swear words, lol

@terdon sorry, I'm not trying to tell you. More explanation for the visiting mod @Ixrec

I'm not a mod lol

user204373
@Mitch No not really. It is easy to block people there. Also there are threads so we don't get to see the same person over and over again. Quite fun actually.

@Ixrec was it people getting mad at each other?

mostly yeah

2:39 PM
@Mitch Fair enough. I just though I'd somehow managed to imply that sex isn't OK and that's not a position I espouse. To put it mildly.

@freebird but it's all tree thread based right?

Mos was not the rape culture room, right? That was The Lounge?

@terdon you mean 'sex'.
or "'sex'"

As long as it's the Right Kind of Sex®, naturally.

or is it '"sex"'

user204373
2:39 PM
@Mitch Yes like that exactly.
