@Mitch OK I sympathise with your intention to be nice to people.
But now I'm interested in your definition of sexism.
> A person who says "x was a famous actress" is ...
Can you fill in the blank with your definition of what is typical for a sexist person?
Or is someone who uses a sexist word not necessarily a sexist?
> The word "actress" is ...
Because "sexist" is such an abstract term.
And I think you and I may be thinking of different things when we say the word "sexist".

My friend told me yesterday: he has a lecture. Now I want to ask him, how was his lecture and I want to use the word of "go" in my sentence.
something like this: "How your lecture was go ?"
is that right? ^

5:04 AM
@stack No: how did your lecture go?
Or: how was your lecture?"

Morning everyone- just a quick question before I go back to bed and sweat this flu out: An OP seems to have really done her best to edit and clarify her question. While it may technically still be out of scope for ELU (or not, since these questions are abundant here :P), I'm wondering how to best proceed to get a 'On Hold' lifted.
This is the question I'm referring to: english.stackexchange.com/questions/311954/…
I flagged it for moderator intervention and provided details to support my request to lift the [On Hold], but someone, it doesn't seem that's what the Flagging process is for ^^

Hey guys, what does "to speak with authority" mean?
Is it like to have a right to speak in such a way as if you had a right to do so?

Which one is correct?
- You cannot be God
- You cannot be the God

11:49 AM
@Shafizadeh Both can be correct. What do you intend to mean by that utterance?

12:11 PM
A: anything is possible ..
B: Not anything, you cannot be God ..
is that right?

That's honestly a poor choice of words for a witty response.

12:49 PM
@Shafizadeh Yes.

1:09 PM
@Cerberus tnx

@Cerberus There's always the benefit of the doubt for older people who may have a set pattern and not realize or be familiar with the newer usage.
Someone who uses 'he' for an unknown person isn't necessarily sexist, it may be their language culture. Their use of 'he' I consider nowadays to be a bit sexist ('How could you assume the doctor is male?')'. But 'using' isn't 'is'. You can do something 'Xish' but that doesn't make you be Xish through and through. But doing it over and over in various similar corroborating ways may make it look a lot like you are Xish.

But what is sexist?
If it isn't defined, it's like impure or entartet.

'presuming primacy of maleness'? (or rarer femaleness)

@JustynaNogala It seems like a figurative use of the word "authority". It might mean the person's words carry power because the audience knows the person is knowledgeable. Or it might mean the person's words carry power because the person has a powerful way of speaking that influences the audience emotionally. Either way it is about power.

I'm about to do payroll. Anybody want a check this week?
All right, next week then.

4:21 PM
@MετάEd Whoa whoa whoa. I think I can make it all simpler for you. Just make one big check instead of all those many small ones. Then send to me, I'll take care of the rest for you.

@Mitch That's a big load off my shoulders. Thanks.

@Mitch And can you define primacy?

the fact of being primary, preeminent, or more important.

What do you call a place where they keep camels, a dromedarium?

Dictionary definition
Also you can't presume a fact

6:18 PM
@Cerberus I feel like I'm being interrogated.
You didn't ask about 'presuming'.
how about instead of 'primacy' (which I'm using very loosely), something like... well not using it. just assuming a male perspective always.
at some point you're going to have to offer up your own idea too.
@MετάEd direct deposit would work better

7:15 PM
@Mitch In male perspective, women are kicking our butts
Have you even heard about the Computer Designing field?

Great screaming sandworms, 142 upvotes on that Trump sentence answer? This is ... embarrassing.

No, no, not an egomaniac. You're thinking of that transformer character.

@DeltaEscher I've heard of all three of those words. Alone and in pairs. But all three together? Can you elaborate?
@MετάEd haha I just gave you 143rd. Take that, sucka!
@MετάEd no no not Pessimus Composite, you're thinking of that Pokemon character. Or is it Digimon? Or Yugioh?

11:30 PM
@Mitch No, no, not Mi-go. You're thinking of that Irish blessing.
