is that a joke?
heh, funny that it's actually hard to tell

Poe's law, named after its author Nathan Poe, is an Internet adage reflecting the idea that without a clear indication of the author's intent, it is difficult or impossible to tell the difference between an expression of sincere extremism and a parody of extremism. The law and its meaning Poe's law, in broader form, is: The core of Poe's law is that a parody of something extreme by nature becomes impossible to differentiate from sincere extremism. A corollary of Poe's law is the reverse phenomenon: sincere fundamentalist beliefs can be mistaken for a parody of those beliefs. History The...

@RegDwigнt Me neither.

It’s strange when the temperature and the wind velocity have the same number.
Especially when that number is about 60.
I used to believe that you didn't need aircon if you travelled the same speed as the temperature.
So 80 mph for 80 degrees, 100 mph for 100, etc.
It kinda works.
Oh, but you have to keep the windows down.
Hard to sleep tonight.

Good evening.

Oh hi there.

How's it going? It's been awhile.

I'm getting by, I suppose.
Treated myself to some new books.
By old authors.

Which books? I'm glad you're getting by, but I hope things look up soon somehow. If that's possible.

4:24 AM
Books by Charles Stross, John Scalzi, Dan Simmons.
Well, the kittens help.
A lot.
Now I’m too self-conscious to post the tongue-in-cheeky article from this week’s Economist. They’re really laying it on thick with the cheeky puns in this science article.
I’m waiting for Steven Brust’s next installment in his Vlad Taltos series, due out in October. So long from now.

Oh, kittens! Any recent photos of them you have to share?

I haven’t really read them in off the cards. I need to.
And getting two was the best idea of all. They have each other.

They like each other then?

Oh yes.
Cats don’t normally get along.
But kittens do.
You have to get them young, but yes, they haven’t become territorial yet at that young age, so they grow up like littermates.

Ah, so they'll be friends for life. That's wonderful.

4:28 AM
They groom each other, hang out together all the time, sleep snuggled in each other’s arms.
Yes, it really is.
I was so deathly allergic as a child.

Aww. I wish I could have kittens, they're so nice.

Always broke my heart I could barely touch them, let alone ever be with them.

I'm allergic to cats, which is awful. Whenever I get the chance, I will pet one anyway.

The only way to desensitize is over time of increasing exposure, I found.
And these new ones got to me when I first got them.
But I’m much better now.
Im still allergic to other cats.
It’s worth it though.
As a kid, it could trigger asthma.
Which is NOT worth it.
They’re people, you know.
Each one completely different.
Thinking, feeling.
Learning, adventuring.

Absolutely. Did I ever tell you that we had a pregnancy test cat?
She wouldn't go anywhere near my mom, except when she was pregnant.

4:32 AM
uh what?
Oh.
I’ve heard of things like that.

It was very odd.

Cats are possessed of a much better sense of smell than people realize.
Very good hearing, too. And at this age, incredible reaction time.

Intelligent, too.

In their own way. They aren’t goldfish.
You and they instinctively look each other in the eye: both sides recognize there’s “somebody home” there.

I can't wait to have my own place someday, with a cat, some plants, and espresso gear. I'll be set.

4:35 AM
I’m going to go try the earplugs again. I have banshee chinooks shaking the house. I am so tired. Got up for some warm soup.
It will come soon enough.

Alrighty, good luck! Sleep tight.

Good night, thanks so much. Enjoy life, lad.

Thanks. Treasure those kittens, my friend.

You know in Asian media, when some western guy suddenly appears on a show and explains something in very simple English; it helps viewers to trust content of your show?
Let's say your show is talking about a blender. And while Korean guys are talking about the blender to increase sales, and suddenly some American guy shows up and say "This blender is very good, it performs very well", of course in English, viewers will trust your product much more

awww
y u so grumpy?

I am grumpy because I can't find a single interaction with that OP.

The U should be a "red Dwight".

I didn't save the layers.

10:26 AM
Here he answered a question that I closed as dupe.
And here is a funny comment on his answer by one Tatiana. Again, on a question closed by me.
This is a question both I and him answered.

it seems he misunderstands grumpy to mean "disagreeing with me"
He has deleted it now.
oh well
I guess we'll never know why red Dwight was so grumpy.

Aww.

Damnit I incorrectly flagged a post. my imperfect flagging record shall be further imperfectionised

World, I just changed all my passwords to a new one, yay!
@EnglishMaster No, the people who trust such things are stupid.

are you guys making fun of me behind my back? :)

@SandeepDhamija No, don't even know who you are.

I was addressing @MattЭллен

12:23 PM
I watched Book Thief today, very good movie.

@SandeepDhamija A little poking fun, yes. It was a funny set of questions
@JasperLoy someone is stealing books? That doesn't sound good

@MattЭллен Well, I watched it without knowing the story beforehand, I was not disappointed.

@JasperLoy I've heard of it. I'm sure someone has told me what the story is, but I can't remember

@MattЭллен Good, now you can watch it without knowing the story too!

time for lunch!

12:28 PM
@MattЭллен You're getting better at doing things imperfectly.

I think I will change my passwords once a year.

Hey Jasper, what's your password? I want to see if I can hack it. It's an experiment.

@Mitch It is ************, lol.

starts typing

Anyway, not many people know my new email address...

12:32 PM
Nope, that was wrong.

I will try not to change my email again, until XXX happens, where XXX is a secret.
So today, I was thinking about where I want to be born again in my next life, and the answer is still Germany, lol.
I don't know why I have such feelings for that place.

1:03 PM
50,000 people trying to play a single game of Pokémon (live stream). And yes, you can sign up to enter commands yourself.

1:13 PM
yeah, I just read about it. apparently most input is just A

I did see "I LIKE PENIS" just a couple minutes ago.
And right now the most common input is "ANARCHY".
"Democracy" is a close second.

yeah
I got to see a whole frame of game play before "... will resume shortly ..." came back. Even after having to see a shitty red bull ad
highly entertaining it is not.

I have no sound so I couldn't tell what my ad was for.
The images were generic.
Could've been an insurance company or a detergent. Or Nutella.

you'd have seen a jar of nutella if it was nutella

@JasperLoy Yeah, that's interesting, because most people probably wouldn't put that near the top of their list. Rationally, you may have one of the better ones, but I think someplace sunnier and milder in weather would fit more people.

1:17 PM
And yeah, the poor guy has been stuck in that room for like twenty minutes, which is how long I've been watching.

I wouldn't mind that so much, but I only get the holding message

@RegDwigнt Mmmm.... Nutella!

it would still be boring, but at least it would be the thing I want to be bored by, not something I don't want to be bored by

I forgot a word, for example when you say loyalty customer systems (e.g. 500friends.com) is a bit an 'evil' , and 'sick' method (alienating final users), if you see what I mean.. you will say this activity is not <...>

@MattЭллен Yeah sorry for that. Perhaps we overflew the stack and I need to log off first for you to enjoy it.

1:18 PM
:D

Oh it's on again.
And he's somehow miraculously in the neighboring room.

@MattЭллен You say that like you underestimate the goodness of Nutella. Now I can't trust a word you say.

but will he get to see the world?

@cyril kosher?

1:20 PM
moral yes :), thanks

immoral?

yep

licks nutella off spoon. Wonders whether to put away Nutella

@Mitch not that I suggest you trust a word I say (I mean, I'm too trustworthy to suggest such a thing) but I don't see how my memory of nutella ads makes my word untrustworthy

makes appointment with psychiatrist because must be going crazy if considering putting away Nutella

1:24 PM
I put away from Nutella around 6 years ago, actually any fat, and had serious health problems before understanding some fat are really necessary, (not Nutella' fat though)

Some people microwave Nutella and then drink it.
a(2) is correct as it's both more natural and avoids a logical paradox (as John is also a student in his class). b(2) is slightly more natural but it would be better to say "No other student in his class is taller than John." — TheMathemagician 44 mins ago
I totally misread his numbering.

It's the way you impugned Nutella's character by associating it with unimaginative advertising practices. And I cannot abide such scurrilous activity. Your questioning attitude shows a lack of moral fiber (and possibly also dietary fiber, please check with your family doctor). Therefore I consider you a liar and what the he'll a thief too.

I first parsed it as "A is more correct. B is also more correct."

Nutella is made of palm oil more or less no?

@cyril there are not enough palms to provide us with as much Nutella as Ferrero provide us with.

1:31 PM
@Mitch I'm not a heel. Your unquestionning attitude makes you seem like some sort of fanboi, incapable of hearing any criticism of your chosen idol

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
That stupid character is still stuck in that stupid room, and it's still a fight between democracy and anarchy.
Basically everyone gave up on actual orders in favor of fruitless "discussion".

bah. discussion never got anythng done!

Perhaps I should sign up and start posting "national socialism".

Guys, in following list of words, how many of them can you recognise?
genus,shew,kirk,pillory,warlock,urchin,obstreperous,importune,remonstrate,crucible,
sorrel,tether,triumvirate,dupe,ale,flagon,tableau,pavilion,gossamer,temerity,
immolate,privy,flail,positivism,deontological ethics,pristine,stilt,verisimilitude,partake,patrimonial,scoff,hatchery,indulgence,sinecure,novena,quaternary,tertiary,alliteration,putrid,allele,phenotype,genotype,mitosis

1:44 PM
is "deontological ethics" one thing or two?

one thing
ale, immolate, positivism, hatchery, indulgence, quaternary, tertiary are ones that I knew before looking up the rest in a dictionary
pavilion
too
Do you know ALL of them?

Are you copying that from testyourvocab.com?

I'm not sure what a pillory is. I've not heard of novena. sorrel is familiar, but I don't know it. "deontological ethics" I think I know, but I'm not 100%
the rest I know

Nah, I copied them from a vocabulary list for an English exam

oh, I didn't know deontological

1:50 PM
Is Great Britain planning on winning any medals at all?

only the ones they won two years ago

Which would be zero?
As there were no Winter Games two years ago.

but they did win medals

@MattЭллен Yeah, twice as many as Kazachstan.

two medals

1:53 PM
And they don't even have winter in Kazachstan.

A pillory is the thing you put someone in to beat them. Like the stocks.
Only a pillory.

And sorrel is a...plant? Fungus?
Some kind of thing like that, because wood sorrel.

I am wood sorrel for your loss.

it's a plant

1:54 PM
Novena seems like something musical, but I don't know why that would be.

@KitFox it's a Catholic thing

If it were something musical, I'd know it.
But I don't know it.

!!define novena

9 days of prayer

Ach. Not again.
And good morning.

1:55 PM
your sox are missing

More like "not still".
And hi.

good morning

I am having a hard time today.

There is a guy called Lonnie Childs and this is a picture of current medal list made by him

@RegDwigнt Since when?

1:56 PM
@KitFox since I long stopped counting.

@EnglishMaster Thanks, but no. I object to that kind of humor.

Oki, sorry
It's interesting that he categorises Canadian and Australian as Mexican. I wonder why

@MattЭллен the Catholics are such slackers, they need a specific name for a frigging nine days of prayer. The Orthodox don't even have a specific name for 9000 days of prayer. They just call it "religion".

Yeah, they like to highlight it when they're consistent

@RegDwigнt You're supposed to tell me these things. Or else wie will ich know?
See? Ich habe Deutsch totally geforgetted.

2:00 PM
@KitFox the last time I tried using the bot was while you were around, and I tried using it for you.

Oh?
Oh.
Oops.

Twas yesterday when we discussed Metal Beard's Sea Cow.

Hey, @Robusto! I started playing Bioshock Infinite last night.
@RegDwigнt Yeah, but she worked then, I thought. There was a picture.

BTW, I went to our LEGO store shortly after that, and a clerk asked me if I wanted to see it, and I said yes, and they had it in the back, and let me play with it.

@EnglishMaster Probably because he's being a jerk.

2:01 PM
It's actually suprisingly light.

Really?

Yeah. A feather.
No shit.

Neat. Do the clerks know you by name?

I think the Haunted House is like twice the weight.

And I suppose that means it is crap construction.

2:02 PM
@KitFox not yet, there are too many of them and I don't show up that often. But that particular one happened to remember me.
@KitFox au contraire. It's sturdy as hell.
A bit shaky, mind you. Just not flimsy.
I think if you tip it over, barely anything would come off at all.

Interesting.

Yeah.
I actually checked if it was reinforced with Technic beams on the inside, and it was.

When Metalbeard showed up, I found myself studying his construction intently.

He's a cutie.

I don't have those parts, but he looked really creative.

2:04 PM
And yeah, some new parts in him.
A 1x1 black brick with the new ball joint, for example.
On one of his legs.
These ball joints are completely new this year, and needless to say I have a whole bunch of them already, but this one part is completelier newer still.

Neat. We got a bunch of ball joints in the recent Ninjago kits.
I haven't seen one like that though.

@KitFox I wonder why this is starred, lol.

The construction of the tread on the whatever Garmadon machine was of interest.
@JasperLoy No idea.

@KitFox I am not too up to date on Ninjago, but from all I have seen they haven't used these new joints yet.

Oh?

2:06 PM
You probably mean the older, bigger ones. These have been around forever and are annoyingly common.

The new ones, so far, can only be seen in Chima's Legend Beasts, of which I have all, and in the Mixels, which are only to be released later this year.

Oh, I see. Then I have lots of big clunky ones.
These were the two my boys got.
Oh! But there was also...

Yeah these are the old ones.
Huge-ass parts, I never know how to store them.

I really liked the construction of the wing hinges on this one. Very solid.

2:08 PM
These are the new ones.

Oh, yeah. That would make for much less clunky joints.

I saw a girl made of Lego today, lol.
It seems that one can make all things out of Lego.

Actually there's an excellent NewElementary post on them, hold on.

I am excited to try to adapt the wing hinges to some other types of machinery.
I'm rather disappointed that the boys have been so into Ninjago, because there are a lot of these mecha-type kits and I don't like them so much.
Pieces go together in weird ways and it's hard for me to abstract it.

There. Excellent overview and comparison.

2:16 PM
The Book Thief is a 2013 American-German war drama film based on the novel of the same name by Markus Zusak, directed by Brian Percival and written by Michael Petroni, with a musical score composed by John Williams. The film stars Emily Watson, Geoffrey Rush, Sophie Nélisse, Ben Schnetzer, Nico Liersch, and Joachim Paul Assböck. Plot In April 1938, a voice representing the Angel of Death, tells about how the young Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nélisse) has piqued his interest. Liesel is traveling on a train with mother and younger brother when her brother dies. At his burial she picks up a bo...
So this is what I watched today. Highly recommended.

Oh. I have that book. Couldn't get past the first bit.

I don't read books though, only watched the film.
It's so sad that the little boy died in the end.

He dies in the beginning too.

Oh, that is another boy I think.

he was dead all along!

2:21 PM
Yes, two boys died, QED.

I can't stand books with children dying anymore.
Or movies.
It's too hard.

All movies should have good endings.
Despite all the good reviews about Shawshank redemption I never watched it.

there's still time!
it's still a film, and you're still capable of watching films

Well, the children looked so cute that I felt like having my own, lol.

Actually there's a designer video out for the Sea Cow.
I do not know where to put it.
I am considering taking apart the Tower Bridge for it.

2:31 PM
I once listened to an audio that gave 50 definitions for fuck, don't know where it is found.

And there's still the Simpsons House and the Parisian Restaurant and the Ewok Village and the ginormous Sydney Opera House and the new Technic transporter plane, oh and the 4x4 limited-edition Crawler.
I have no room.

You guys like to collect Lego.

I'd like to stop collecting, and start building.

@RegDwigнt gasp
I could build all day until I got bored of it.

Luckily I am not interested in Lego, lol.

2:34 PM
Yes. Luckily indeed.
It is a curse.

I have a question for you guys. Does assessment book mean anything to you?

Nope.
Other than the face value.

Well, here, they are what parents buy for their kids from certain bookstores to make them do better in the exams.
These kids do endless questions, and become more and more stupid instead.
I am so sick of the education system here.
The endless drills make the students very good at doing exam questions, but they have all stopped thinking long ago.

People should stop preparing for exams, and start preparing for life.
Preparing for exams is completely counter-productive.
Jul 21 '11 at 15:45, by RegDwight
3k does not mean "expert on the subject matter". 3k only means "expert on how to get to 3k".

I have listened to this recital many times, very good.

2:50 PM
Morning!

Good day!

Today is the day that shall not be named...
But at least I'm not turning 30 this year hehe.

@RegDwigнt At least he deleted his question himself, or we'd have to find out who this "red Dwight" was!
And, more importantly, what he does for a living!

@Cerberus so you're turning 31? Happy day!

Thanks!
And we're having a meeting on my birthday, at my house, coincidentally.
So now some people I don't know that well are telling me "see you tonight!" on my Facebook, and my best friends are wondering why they weren't invited hehe.

2:55 PM
Congrats on turning 28 again! That's only some 9 per head.

Thanks! That's better.

You should get some extra heads.

Many happy returns of the day.

How many?
Thanks.

one, so it can be 7 years per head

2:56 PM
Because...I turned 7?
Oh, one more.

because you turned 28

Right, right.

Mar 2 '11 at 10:33, by RegDwight
"The most notable difference is the number of its heads: Most sources describe or depict three heads; others show it with two or even just one; a smaller number of sources show a variable number, sometimes as many as 50."

That's better.

So with 50 heads, you could turn 1400 before turning 29.
The math checks out.

2:58 PM
But, really, so many heads...

Most of them plus ten are asleep at all times anyway.

My sister Hydra needs several hours to get ready for a date.

you're forgetful enough now. imagine how much you'd forget between 50 heads!

Haha.
They would be too busy being asleep and forgetting things to get anything done.

Getting anything done is overrated.

2:59 PM
Quite.

all the souls would escape from hades
the world would be overrun with dead people

Then earth would become a ghost town.
Or world.
