3:00 PM
but you'd need an SO account to chat there

@MattЭллен ok, thanks for the tip

no probs

@Jez I asked him where the file went from the biztalk folder, that was his response.

Jez
well i dont know the context of your conversation

3:02 PM
I'm trying to find the location of a set of files that are imported in this code somewhere.
It's a datafeed from one db to another.

there must a (web)service of somekind on [ambiguous name]

I have no idea how to start at the beginning even.
@MattЭллен Well, yes, but what does that look like?
How will it look when it's referenced in code, or will it be referenced in code?

it could be referenced in code

Jez
hang on, why are you on this task if you dont know where to start? :-)

Because no one else seems to know how to do it either.

3:05 PM
web services start http://[server name]:[portnumber]
generally

I don't know the server name.
Crud.

I don't know if ASP MVC does something different
@KitFox or the IP address

Well, it's structured differently. I don't know where to find the beginning so I can walk through an locate the import process.
Maybe I can search for "import".
Hmm.
It just all in the repo, and I don't have an easy way to do that.
gah
Where is the dev this morning anyway?

perhaps he's taken hanukkah off

Well, it's third night tonight. Hardly critical.
Barely even holy.
> return Json(new { ipAddress = Request.ServerVariables["REMOTE_ADDR"] });
Woo! Think I'm getting closer.
Oh. Wait.
No, that's for the user's IP.
Damn.

3:10 PM
Some Jewish people take offence to being wished a Merry Christmas.

Some Christians take offence to being wished a Happy Hannukah.

Just saying Seasons Greetings is the safest.

Some ostrich jump a fence if you scare them

Personally, I prefer Good Tidings.

seasons greetings is so awkward tho
no one says that :P

3:12 PM
I thought they stick their head in the ground?

no, that's a common misconception. they put their heads near to the ground to listen for danger

This would be easier to search if people COMMENTED THEIR CODEZ. glares at the devs in the room

I write code that's easy to follow shifty gaze

Jez
@KitFox some people think commenting code is bad. not that i agree

It's unnecessary if you don't name every goddamned method as a variant of some theme that I'm supposed to figure out.

Jez
3:14 PM
but if you wanna see some sado-mashocism, read the book Clean Code. they refactor the fuck out of code to avoid having to document it, and in so doing, break everything down into tiny functions of about 3 lines or less

/me writes self documenting code

Jez
there's no such thing as self-documenting code IMHO

CreateDatasheet, GenerateDatasheet, MakeDatasheet, LoadDatasheet, DisplayDatasheet. ergh

Jez
not for my brain. i almost always find it easier to read English descriptions

@Jez i was being facetious

3:15 PM
And here's one that's completely empty.

LaunderDatasheet, PutDatasheetOnTheDatabed

Jez
@clinch oh. well there are people who think one should write "self documenting code"

oh! oh! here are some things with load in them.

Jez
DoThisOneLittleOperationThatReallyOughtToBeInABiggerFunctionButIfIPutItHereTheFu‌nctionNameCanTellYouWhatItDoesWithoutTechnicallyBeingAComment

hahaha

3:19 PM
omg why is this like this?
I can't even!

Contrary to belief, they do not bury their heads in the sand. Let’s look to Wikipedia for insight into why we think that they do.
This myth likely began with Pliny the Elder (AD 23–79), who wrote that ostriches “imagine, when they have thrust their head and neck into a bush, that the whole of their body is concealed.” This may have been a misunderstanding of their sticking their heads in the sand to swallow sand and pebbles, or, as National Geographic suggests, of the defensive behavior of lying low, so that they may appear from a distance to have their head buried.
It doesn't appear that they put their heads near to the ground to listen for danger but the misconception is very old @MattЭллен
over 1,900 years

@skullpatrol ah. I see

I guess listening for danger could be considered as a defensive behaviour as the National Geographic suggests
of lying low

could be.

Final grade: 98.5%
:D
well done, I never knew that

3:35 PM
lol

4:01 PM
@MattЭллен Holy shit that's rude and shows a lack of empathy

There's no accounting for ostrich

@KitFox avoids eye contact
@Jez But it's so modular!
@Jez Truthfully, I am sometimes comment-blind. reading through code to see what it does, I'll ask the original author, and they'll point to the javadocs that answer it right effing there.
@MattЭллен people are so ostrich.

Sure a lot of GR questions.
I’ve retracted my close vote and answered the fellow after he said what it was he found and failed to understand. However, he still didn’t say where he looked. I smell Google-shite.

A: what does "chanced that way" mean in this sentence?

tchristAny dictionary should provide a perfectly reasonable definition for using chance as a verb. The OED provides several: 1. intr. To come about by chance; to happen, occur, fall out, come to pass. a. with the event as subject, expressed either by a sb. preceding the verb, or by a clause fol...

And I have no idea what to do with nonsense questions like these.

Q: doubts in rewrite in present continuous passive

user46548I Have to rewrite this sentence in the present continuous passive: Investors are investing a lot of money in this. If I write in this way, is it correct ? In this is being invested a lot of money by investors or A lod of money is being invested in this by investors

4:17 PM
what is "GR"?
General Relativity?

Somebody has a stupid homework assignment created by a stupid teacher or a stupid book.
GR is General Reference in an ELU context.

General Reference; i.e. they're answered in an accessible online reference

thanks :-)

@tchrist Close them. "Is it correct" is a trigger phrase.

Yeah.
I already did so with this one, but not enough people have agreed with me yet.

Q: "This is particularly since..."

JosRecently I came across this sentence: [... allegations that such information had been used elsewhere] This is particularly since you were given access to the information. I have been trying to think of why I think it is wrong and I guess maybe it is just missing a so: This is particu...

And it gets an upvote.

4:24 PM
I don't think that can be answered without knowing what This is and the "non-verbal" context. I suspect it's speech, conversation, and words like so get missed. The sentence is idiomatic.

@MattЭллен ...which is now NO MORE!!

Q: New close reason: include the research

KitFoxAfter reviewing several Meta posts and related commentary, the moderator team has replaced one of the custom close reasons on the site. The General Reference close reason has been replaced by: Please include the research you've done, or consider if your question suits our English Language Lea...

@Mitch very true. it has been improved by the community

@Josh61 Please use chat. We can set up a private room if you need it.

@MattЭллен But I still think we can call it GR.
For General Relativity.
It's sexy-sciency that way.

mmmm, science

4:33 PM
she blinded me with it

I never understood that. Why would she do that? Seems an abuse of knowledge.

to gather evidence for her hypothesis

Oh. That seems reasonable.

all's fair in science and science
with the exception of falsifying data

4:49 PM
@JasperLoy I have truly been graced by god

@MattЭллен What kind of person would do that?
With the sister-in-law no less.

some people
I don't know

wao;oeusuhaaaaaa
I got an "A-" in a class I thought for sure I got a C in
dafuq
as men with funny accents say in my television, wahey.

@GeorgePompidou A- is failing, or didn't they tell you?

@GeorgePompidou Sometimes, miracles do happen.

4:53 PM
@Robusto I'm stung about the - now
I am presumptuous that way
goes to appeal the grade
without that - I'd have straight As, and I'm much closer to that prospect now than I thought I was

I got an A- in grad school and I never spoke to that teacher again.

I suppose it's no longer a prospect

Hello @KitFox you must be having lunch now. I am drinking some coffee.

Jez
hah!

oh, believe you me this professor is never going to be spoken to by anyone
the average grade on our exam 1 in the class was a 56%

Jez
4:55 PM
MacOSX doesn't have a way of maximizing a window
dear god that's crap

@JasperLoy Just got back.

basically, if you look up pedant in a fun dictionary that has pictures in it, you'll see a picture of this professor there.
smiling and with a thumbs up and a picture of his puppy which he has with his wife but no kids and he's like 70

Just jump through the hoop and get to the important stuff.
Nobody cares about your grades when you've got a real job.

well I don't.

Jez
why the heck do people use Macs?
overpriced pieces of crap

4:56 PM
because they offer better UX and they look nice
and have good hardware

Jez
no they don't, they have NO maximize

what's that?

Jez
no they don't, decent PC hardware is better
maximize - make the window fill the screen

and because some of us need a better OS than windows but don't want to go with something non-commercial.

Jez
note: not the same as fullscreen
it isn't a better OS than windows in any sense of the term

4:57 PM
do you really want to proceed opening this can of worms?

It's strange that Mr Caleb always comes to this chat but never speaks, even though I tried to engage him multiple times.

maybe he thought he saw Jesus in here.

Let's not make fun of his beliefs.

@Jez yes it is. yes it is. yes it is.
yuhuh

Jez
isn't.

4:58 PM
yes
it is

Knock it off.

lowers snout
backs up a little

@KitFox I learnt that phrase from you.

Oh. Do I need to be clearer? I thought that was a widely-used phrase.

oh scheiße, bus is in 19 minutes and I haven't had any coffee

5:00 PM
@KitFox Of course, it's clear. I just did not know it back then.

3 out of 23 candidates have withdrawn from the math mod election.

Jez
ARGH
i give up
closes down browserstack
can't even figure out how to debug scripts in MacOS
god-awful OS. anyone who uses it deserves for stuff not to work

do you not know how to use a bash shell?
everyone who knows how to use a bash shell can use os x

Jez
if you don't care about graphics, yes
unfortunately i need to deal with a graphical website

5:08 PM
you said to debug a script. is it a graphics script?
oh
web browsers are fairly standard across operating systems then.

Jez
no, OSX makes things really suck
no maximizing
ctrl-f doesn't seem to find stuff

man, if you cannot use os x I don't think you can be helped. it's a really easy to use thing targeted at beginners, but with the advanced features of a unix-style operating system.

Jez
safari's web developer tools are awful

@JasperLoy better than not coming to chat and speaking all the time.

there's nothing about it that's difficult to use for anyone
so get firefox!
or chrome
and use command + f
for find
it's not hard to look these things up

Jez
5:10 PM
maybe that's the problem. it's so targetted at beginners it's harder to use for people who know what the fuck they're doing. partially, Google are also making this mistake.
i dont have "command" on my keyboard

or to ask someone, like me ^.^ a seasoned mac user since age 12 since my parents loved me and did not give me windows.

@Jez It's the squiggly thing.

do you have a little button next to "option" with a squiggly and an apple logo on it?

Jez
of course not

that's called command

Jez
5:11 PM
this is a windows PC

Gmail does not recycle email addresses but Yahoo and Outlook does, it seems.

Jez
im using browserstack which gives you a VM

oh
use the super key

Jez
super??

Well, there's your problem right there.

5:11 PM
do you have a key with a windows logo on it?

@JasperLoy gmail isn't green.

jesus >.<

Jez
yes

use that

Jez
Windows will probably intercept that

5:11 PM
@Mitch I can never get back the email I deleted then, lol.

that's windows's problem

Jez
and mine

anyway, I'm off to my comp org exam.

@Jez no, it's just different. You're just used to how things work with windows. really the differences are minimal though.

Jez
no
lack of a proper maximize is lame

5:12 PM
if I don't make it back in three hours, MIPS assembly killed me.

Jez
that's a fundamental difference

@JasperLoy all those electrons are gone now, can never be collected and reused for something else.
I have a bag of electrons if you want to use them.

@Mitch I no longer study physics.

They're kind of mixed up with a lot of protons and neutrons so you'll have to clean that up.

Feynman once said "if we only know more about the electron"

5:15 PM
@JasperLoy me neither. probably never. I mean I was in a physics class. just never studied.
@skullpatrol really? why the electron? what about the proton? everybody ignores the proton.

Proton is just an inside-out electron.

Oh.
Pretty simple.
And obvious

Jez
Feynman helped to develop the nuclear bomb
what a shame

really? I thought he would be too young for that.

I think it's impressive.

5:17 PM
what's so impressive?

Jez
developing WMDs

the only nation in history to drop two of them on cities?

Anything that can kill millions efficiently and basically instantaneously is pretty impressive.

Yes, one day, man may need to use the bomb to kill ourselves.

anyone gonna watch the Bhopal disaster movie?

Jez
5:20 PM
@KitFox yeah but its impressiveness is overriden by the lack of morality in developing it

That will happen when the temperature becomes too hot or too cold, and we can no longer survive on this planet.

If you say so. Morality or lack thereof doesn't preclude my impression.

A quick and painless death would be much better than a slow and painful one.

@KitFox how does that work? A proton is made of two up and one down quark, but an electron is an elementary lepton all by itself.

@Mitch I made that up. Sorry. I forgot to qualify it.

5:21 PM
Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain is an historical-drama film set amidst the real-life Bhopal disaster that had occurred in India on December 2–3, 1984. It is directed by Ravi Kumar and features Martin Sheen, Mischa Barton, Kal Penn, Rajpal Yadav, Tannishtha Chatterjee, and Fagun Thakrar in important roles. Kumar got the idea of making a film based on the Bhopal disaster after he read a book based on it. Shot over a period of 18 months, it was originally slated for a late 2010 release. However, the lack of responses from distributors kept on delaying the release. A few organisations fighting for the rights...

A proton is an electron turned inside out if and only if an electron is a proton turned inside out.

I was thinking of a positron anyway.

@KitFox I gave you a chance to web a more tangled thing and you punted.

looks sheepish
I'm working.

@KitFox That's a better save.
It's what explains how balloons and cats stick together, the electrons get all turned inside out, and the postrons stick like velcro. Same idea.

5:26 PM
It's now less than a week to Christmas.

woo hoo! any expectations?
a math book?

I am hoping to get a miracle of some kind. I don't know exactly what.

Miracles are expensive. how about a minor coincidence?
I could get you a stocking stuffer of some fortune cookies.

Well, a minor coincidence could be considered a miracle. The word is not well defined.

I can work with 'not well defined'.

5:31 PM
I only have 4 distinct hats on SE now.

The one-electron universe postulate, proposed by John Wheeler in a telephone call to Richard Feynman in the spring of 1940, states that all electrons and positrons are actually manifestations of a single entity moving backwards and forwards in time. According to Richard Feynman: I received a telephone call one day at the graduate college at Princeton from Professor Wheeler, in which he said, "Feynman, I know why all electrons have the same charge and the same mass" "Why?" "Because, they are all the same electron!" The idea is based on the world lines traced out across spacetime by every electron...

I have one hat in real life. Hm...maybe not even that, because it's not mine.

I have a hat right here.
Its name is not real clear.

have no fear
my dear
for one day it will become clear
perhaps after a few beer
hi @Mahnax nice hat

5:59 PM
It's hard to answer questions on this site these days.
It's 2 am now.

It's hard to look at them without puking.
Neither has anything like "correctness" associated with it. — Robusto 12 secs ago

@skullpatrol That is a lovely poem.

@skullpatrol That's only if you believe the Warren Commission report.

7:01 PM
Because you have a 'friend' with this attraction? — Mitch 13 secs ago

casting the first stone huh?

7:28 PM
@MikeMiller WTF are you in this room?

Seems to be the case.

-_-

I felt really confused just now, and then I took a nap. I don't feel so bad now. It seems the worst is over.

@MikeMiller all we need is a DJ
:D
sleep makes a big difference @JasperLoy

@skullpatrol Yes. One reason I went mad at 18 was because I had almost no free time to sort out my thoughts and also I did not get enough sleep in the fucking army.

7:37 PM
"I am a DJ, I am what I play", @skullpatrol - David Bowie (Lodger)

@JasperLoy without sleep your body does not get a chance to repair itself
that includes your brain
@MikeMiller do you still use that site?

Turntable? Not often, it only works on computers and I'm most often on my phone.

Is it too early to send a New Year greeting now?

yes
wait for after xmas
normally

@skullpatrol Have you ever had a girlfriend or wife?

7:42 PM
yes

What happened?

nothing

And then you broke up?

sorry 3 question max :-)
2 mins ago, by Jasper Loy
@skullpatrol Have you ever had a girlfriend or wife?
2 mins ago, by Jasper Loy
What happened?
1 min ago, by Jasper Loy
And then you broke up?
@JasperLoy just like baseball, 3 strikes and you're out :D

@skullpatrol Nonsense!

7:47 PM
@JasperLoy not everything has to make sense my friend

@skullpatrol But technically you didn't swing at Question 3, so it shouldn't count as a strike. You're still up.
Hell, you might even make the playoffs this year.

I got the handegg hat!
@Robusto I predict that next year, you will attain 100k.
