8:01 PM
Hibye!

@Mitch No, no, not razor burn. You're thinking of pants and a low-cut blouse. I mean you're thinking of that comedian with the cigar. Because sometimes a cigar is just a low-cut blouse.

@MattЭллен How's things over on the other side of the pond? Any looming government shutdowns to worry about?

@aediaλ hmmm. I haven't been paying attention. the army's not in the streets yet, so I assume it's all OK :D
How's things in your neck of the woods?

Just went camping over the weekend in the Adirondacks (northern NY state) by a beautiful pond, and didn't freeze or anything, so that was fun.

8:14 PM
I went to a wedding yesterday. First time I've had a tie on in almost a decade. It was about as much fun as . . . a wedding.

I'm not an experienced camper, because my parents always preferred cabins or motels, but my husband camped a lot as a kid and made sure we didn't forget anything important. And we got an awesome little tent that is really easy to assemble.
I kind of wish all my friends would finish getting married and stuff already so I would stop having to dress up and go to weddings and showers. Last year was especially ridiculous with that.

@Robusto It kind of depends on how many of your friends are there, right?

I think I've been to my last wedding for a couple of decades :D

Oh!

(On Saturday)

8:21 PM
Was it fun?
Unfun?

@aediaλ Sounds fun. I'm not much of a camper either. Only at festivals, really

I've just come back from a wedding-planning meeting, 1 minute ago.
They have it planned very tightly: the schedule is like, "17.00: bride and groom enter the room; 17.02: first speech" etc.

@Cerberus It was good. I only really knew the groom and the bride. I had some of the groomsmen before, but most of the people I had no idea who they were
so I felt kinda awkward
but once I'd had a bit to drink iit was fine :D

I see. So that was a bit awkward.

the venue was really nice

8:23 PM
Having had the groomsmen and all.

the food was good
the ceremony was lovely

(^ funny typo)

That sounds great.
So you broke past the stage of "polite conversation with stranger" with some of the people?

8:25 PM
Good.

I'd been on the stag do

Ah, yes.
That helps a lot.

so I had an in with the other people on the stag do
It does

Oh that probably helped.

An in?

8:25 PM
hey guys

A way in

OK.

to start talking to them
hey @nick

So that was when you had them.
Hi Nick.

8:26 PM
Does anyone in here read poetry?

@Cerberus I wasn't the stripper ;)

Sure. Mostly Latin poetry, though...
@MattЭллен Ah, they couldn't afford you.

:B

@Cerberus indeed

@Cerberus My only friends there were the bride and groom. And they were useless for entertainment.

8:27 PM
Oh, that kind of sucks. You weren't in the stag do?

Well, I was reading a poem called The photograph by shirley toulson, the other day. The last line haunts me.
"It silences silence"

Hmm I don't think I know that poem.
That's a nice paradox.

@Cerberus Nah. They went off and played paintball. I'm not into that.

=_= I can't seem to find it online anywhere.

@Robusto Ugh, that's way too...involved.

8:29 PM
i no rite

Marriages seem to be an excuse to get people to do things they don't like and pay for it, too. And more than a little.

At first I agreed to the bachelor party, and then I learned it was going to be stretched over a Friday and a Saturday and included paintball, so I begged off.

Ugh.

Yeah that sucks.

@Cerberus When I was a musician I must have played at a hundred weddings, and they're all the same. Details may change, but everyone thinks theirs is special, but the dirty little secret is that they are the most non-special thing about the whole relationship.

8:31 PM
Heh.
Yes.

Weddings are a formula modified by fashion.

raises hand I didn't have any dancing at mine! Because I hate it! So there's something special.

The wedding planning I attended this evening was not like that, though. It was just like, we want a moderate, intimate wedding that's simple yet comfortable and enjoyable.

@aediaλ Most weddings don't have dancing either. They throw a head fake in that direction, but nobody really dances.

@aediaλ Haha, great! That's my perfect wedding.

8:34 PM
Oh they have standing around shuffling and waving light-up foam sticks and cheap shiny plastic hats and all sorts of awfulness now.

I don't know what happened but it seems like this new wave of DJs come from the school of thought that a wedding isn't classy without mardi gras beads.

at first I read that as "mardi gras beards". I was excited
but beads just don't do it for me

Heh.

What the hell are those?

8:38 PM
Better half and I always get pressured to dance by someone or other who's had enough to wander up there during the chicken dance or if not that, the one where couples who have been together a certain length of time have to go up and then sit back down until you have just like the 25 or 50 yr anniversary couple there.
And we're always like no, if we wouldn't even dance at our own wedding what makes you think we're going to do it now?

shivers
Yeah just laugh it off and keep saying "no, thanks", in the exact same words, until they stop.

I usually point out that we made a vow to stick together through thick and thin and also not dance at weddings.
I mean we didn't say those exact words but it was clearly part of the bargain.
What amazes me about the whole thing is how consistently it happens. It's not like I know one dude who's like the you-must-dance-at-weddings police; a variety of friends and acquaintances, who don't hassle people about what they wear or eat, who don't pressure you to have another drink, etc. seem upset when you don't want to dance at a wedding, like your inaction offends them and decreases the amount of fun they are having.
And I am perfectly happy to sit there and for them to eke out whatever fun they can from waving the cheap plastic hat around as long as I don't have to be a part of it.

8:56 PM
Mardi Gras (; ; meaning "Fat Tuesday") is the annual Carnival celebration held in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. The New Orleans Carnival season, with roots in preparing for the start of the Catholic season of Lent, starts after Twelfth Night, on Epiphany (January 6). It is a season of parades, balls (some of them masquerade balls), and king cake parties. It has traditionally been part of the winter social season; at one time "coming out" parties for young women at débutante balls were timed for this season. Celebrations are concentrated for about two weeks before and through F...
But the other wedding props I have lived through are more like this.

@Robusto Weddings are rites of passage. Of course they look the same. I have been given a cake every year on my birthday for the past mumble years.
The only thing I think I disagree with you about is that people think their weddings were unique.

@MετάEd mine wasn't
!!/rimshot!

Brian: Please, please, please listen! I've got one or two things to say.
The Crowd: Tell us! Tell us both of them!
Brian: Look, you've got it all wrong! You don't NEED to follow ME, You don't NEED to follow ANYBODY! You've got to think for your selves! You're ALL individuals!
The Crowd: Yes! We're all individuals!
Brian: You're all different!
The Crowd: Yes, we ARE all different!
Man in crowd: I'm not...
The Crowd: Sch!

@MετάEd No I think you're thinking of a low_cut blouse...and cigars.

@Mitch I'm afreud you're right.

9:13 PM
@MετάEd I didn't say unique. I said special.

"It's when you say one thing, but mean your mother."

Anyway, to sum up, weddings are just society's way of putting people through as much pain in one day as the couple may experience in all their time together.

@Robusto What do you mean when you say special?

What? Oh, maybe for the couple, but it's a great party for everyone else.
@aediaλ Bar mitzvahs too...wait, I've already said too much.
@MετάEd I remember when I used to be mumble years old. So much promise. So many New Orleans/bar mitzvah beads (best bar mitzvah ever)
@Nick "The silence was deafening" - is that what you were thinking of?

@MετάEd Gen ref.

9:23 PM
@aediaλ Ah, noted.

> 5. (Social Science / Education) denoting or relating to the education of physically or mentally handicapped children a special school

@aediaλ Weird! It sounds similar to the "smile!" kind of people.
People keep telling me to dance too.

@Robusto There are a bunch of meanings there. Do you mean to say most people think their weddings are exceptional?

Is writing ~this~ instead of "this" annoying?

~No~, ~not~ ~really~.

9:33 PM
@MετάEd Distinct among others of a kind

@MετάEd Yes.
@JohanLarsson Yes. well, not really. Just a little bit unusual.

@Cerberus dance!

*I don't like " because I visualize someone doing it with their hands while saying it

Gotta go. My cats are barking. That can't be good.

"oh" you "mean" air "quotes"?

9:34 PM
Then use italics.
Mew!

@MattЭллен yep

@MattЭллен stumbles and falls

I "see"

Air quotes, also called scare quotes.

scary airy

9:35 PM
@Cerberus I'll stick with it for a while then

@JohanLarsson I am personally annoyed by it. I think that's enough to convince you. Also, doesn't your pinky get tired trying to do that?

@Cerberus get up! try again!

@Robusto See, I don't think people think that. By and large, they want the white dress, the Wedding March, the rose petals, the exchange of rings, the "kiss the bride". They want them because they're traditional. They know that's not exceptional.

Well, they're not the same thing, actually.
@MattЭллен tries again, stamps on bride's dress

@Robusto They're barfing. Either way, not good.

9:35 PM
@Mitch I don't get the pinky part.

I am never attending weddings involving women again!
@MετάEd I think it depends on the people and on the item.

@JohanLarsson you need your left hand pinky to type the tilde... or sorry a pinky for the shift lkey and a stretch of the ring finger to get the tilde.

@Mitch also annoyed by ~ or air quotes?
even worse with Swedish keyboard

@Cerberus Of course. I don't agree with Robusto's generalization, that's all.

9:37 PM
@JohanLarsson By the character '~'. Also by the physical action of doing air quotes. not by '"' or should I say """ or rather "\"".

Maybe ~ is supposed to resemble the motion you make when you do air quotes. :-)

@MετάEd They're not special for him. It's like being in a touring musical company...-every- town has a different name but they're pretty much all the same.
cue cornbread lyrics machine

@MετάEd some people want the Imperial March.

9:39 PM
@MετάEd You know he likes slight but catchy generalisations...

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I think that would be great.
You may now remove your battle helmets and kiss.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 bum bum bum. bumda bum, bumda bum

I think my sister in law came down the isle to the Imperial March :D

9:45 PM

@Mitch ok you are one of the people on the internet I respect the most, will think twice about ~

@TRiG That has to be fake.
I bet there is a very similar girl standing behind a window that only looks like a mirror.

lol
toodles!

@Cerberus I think not, creative font though

@MattЭллен Bye!
@JohanLarsson You think there is a real mirror that selectively replaces text?

9:52 PM
no, I think it is correct from eyeballing it. Checked letter by letter, did not see any flaws.

Oh!
Wait, I didn't even consider that possibility.
That is cool!
I totally didn't think of that technique.

what technique did you use? :P

I didn't use any technique. I thought was Photoshop.

10:07 PM
@MattЭллен Damn it!

How did the interview go?

@JohanLarsson I looked at it very carefully several times and I think you're ri—booooobs.
@JohanLarsson She invited me down to meet yet more people next week, so I guess it went well.

@KitFox meh
@KitFox good!

I think so. I mean, we covered my skills and expertise and then she asked about my scheduling issues and sort of talked herself through what she could reasonably do, but kind of left it open, and then started to rationalize about how I didn't need to come all the way there again before I gently interrupted her to say that I didn't mind coming down.
Way better than yesterday's portent of two turkey vultures eviscerating a dead skunk in the backyard.

@KitFox Is it far?
@KitFox don't get any of this.

10:13 PM
@JohanLarsson Some might think it was an omen, and not a good one.
@JohanLarsson An hour and twenty minutes.

is that just for the interview or is it going to be every day if you get the job?
or was it a remote gig?

@JohanLarsson It means she saw an evil portent.

Hey, I have a question.

@Cerberus Keep it to yourself.

@JohanLarsson Not sure. She seemed open to negotiation.
Gotta put the boys to bed. I'll be back later.

10:28 PM
Dutch newspaper says, "regular budgets haven't been approved by Congress for years; finances are managed by means of emergency measures".
Is this true?
Phrased correctly? I am translating of course.
@TRiG wai

@Cerberus I was commenting on your pause.

I see.
How audacious, referring to an unmentioned thing by "it".

I was just cycling home :D
hiya @KitFox

Oh, where were you?

at the hackspace
I had planned to be offline down there, but then I wanted the internet for information and then I got no editing done

10:39 PM
Heh.
The room seduced you.

indeed
also I decided to feed a troll on IRC
it was asking about "hacking my brother's router"

Heh.
What did you feed it?

I tried to explain about social engineering, which it wasn't interested in. I seemed happier about the idea of turning its laptop into an access point for its iPad

For its own Ipad?
That's not very...trollish?

yes
I think it was online at its friend's house

10:42 PM
Or do you mean the fact that it dared mention Apple stuff to your face?

yeah, it wasn't a super troll
just mildly annoying

Trolling is a strange phenomenon

it seemed convinced that we knew how to break WPA2 encryption, which is not the case, because we're a hack space
which I sort of understand, but it would not listen when I tried explaining that we're not crackers

So...where did it come from?

I don't know. the IRC channel is on freenode, so it could be anywhere

10:46 PM
I see.

there was a brief moment of humour when a different troll popped in and started trolling the first one, while I wasn't paying attention to the channel. I can't remember the whole conversation but it went something like:
a: are youa guy
b: yeah who are you?
a: I'm a guy
b: oh. I'm horny
a: can you hack?
b: no but I'm really horny
etc. for a couple of minutes

Wow.
Very sophisticated.

indeed

yeah subtle stuff

11:11 PM
looks like I've missed @kit again! good night

11:41 PM
@MattЭллен Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!
Shit.
sulks Maybe Writer's chat tomorrow then.
