@JohanLarsson Lila, please.
When can they be here?

dunno, probably takes a while
would you like a progressbar while waiting?

Yes, please.
waits
Are they finished yet?

Went to the store because I wanted hot soup, and was out of coffee. And what did I find at the store? More heavy rain.

@JohanLarsson I'd like Pacman.

12:13 AM
Apparently now 1,250 people unaccounted for.

In lilac. I'm sure he can eat away 2000 km of rock in a jiffy.
1250? That's a lot.
But the shop was still open?

Yes, it was.

And stocked?

Everybody has the same story as me, or worse. A friend who lives closer to the mountains than me, literally in the gap, got evacked today.

12:15 AM
Yay!!
I can feel the tunnel to relieve Tchrist progressing.

Sure, supplies are fine. Just were out of things like sump pumps and shop vacs for a few day.
You could not pay me enough to drive to work tomorrow.
Simply impossible.

This is quite true.

or maybe she is

from here, which I cannot be blamed for posting in here originally

Haha.
I'm sure there is a little dangly thingy that we can't see.

@Cerberus giggles

It's true, isn't it?

Probably, but he isn't looking up. He's looking straight ahead.

I'm not so sure about that.

12:59 AM
Well, ok.

He's cute.

1:12 AM
Apparently Colorado is up to 11,700 evacuees now.
And 19,000 homes damaged.
Those numbers will surely rise.

1:27 AM
@Cerberus maybe it is a she

1:37 AM
Is answering as Community a reversible act?
No.

@Theta30 Or maybe not.

1:49 AM
Two summers ago Boulder had a record fire that destroyed 168 homes. Then last year Colorado Springs had their fire destroying 368 homes. All that is nothing now: at least 1,500 homes have been destroyed.
And it is still raining.
There are now evacuations in the east of the state as the flood waters continue their inevitable march to the sea, thousands of miles away.

@tchrist How is your basement?

What??
How can a fire destroy 368 houses?
That never happens here.
At least not since the Middle Ages or something.
Or are those houses all made of wood and built closely together?

2:21 AM
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Wet.
@Cerberus What else does one build houses of?

Stone, brick, concrete.

@Cerberus No, they aren’t built close together at all.
They are built in the forest, which is where people want to live.

Ah, that explains it.

And they are built of wood because that is what one builds houses with. It is incredibly cheaper than stone.
These are not city buildings. These are people's homes.

We have very few wooden houses.

2:23 AM
Bizarre.

Neither in cities nor in the country.

Weirdos.
Oh wait, did you cut down all your trees?

There is a house near where my parents live that is know as "the wooden house".

Nutters.

A rare sight.

2:24 AM
We don’t live in tenements buildings, jamming a million people together.

Perhaps it was made illegal because of the risk of fire...but surely that would not apply to the countryside?
And yet it's all bricks.

Everybody has their own house.
You’re rich. That isn’t reasonable.

?
Poor people don't live in wooden houses either here.
So I wonder why not.

> Labor costs for brick masons make new brick homes a luxury these days.

Wood is not expensive here: barns and such are normally made of wood.
They sell ready-made brick wall-parts these days.
Although that is luckily still rare.

2:28 AM
A brick home will cost 4 or more times what the same wooden home will cost to build.
It simply is not possible.
I have never lived in a brick home nor known anyone who did. They are rare.
They would be called “the brick house” here for their uncommonness.

Then how come all houses are made of brick here?

Is that a prison? The grass looks too nice.

Even the cheapest, most uninspiring neighbourhoods where you wouldn't want to be caught dead. Would wood command ooohs and aaahs in those neighbourhoods, they would love it.
Yeah it is like a prison. Cheap modern neighbourhoods for families.

I associate brick buildings with schools and prisons.
That would be much more expensive than a wooden house. Much much more. It could not be cheap.

I associate wooden buildings with romantic cottages.

2:32 AM
Everyone has a frame house here.
Even those with brick siding are still frame houses.

It's the cheapest houses we have, probably along with concrete flats, but we don't have those in the country. And I think they are rarely built any more.
What is a frame house?
No supporting walls, you mean?

One built of a wooden frame.
Framing, in construction known as light-frame construction, is a building technique based around vertical structural members, usually called studs, which provide a stable frame to which interior and exterior wall coverings are attached, and covered by a roof made of horizontal ceiling joists and sloping rafters (or pre-fabricated roof trusses). Modern light-frame structures usually gain strength from rigid panels (plywood and other plywood-like composites such as oriented strand board (OSB) used to form all or part of wall sections) but until recently carpenters employed various forms ...

So I wonder why most houses seem to be built of wood in most of the world, but not in some other places.

This is how houses are built here.
You might actually look at that article. For example, the Walls section.

This is a more familiar sight here.

2:37 AM
> Light frame construction using standardized dimensional lumber has become the dominant construction method in North America and Australia because of its economy. Use of minimal structural materials allows builders to enclose a large area with minimal cost, while achieving a wide variety of architectural styles.

I think bricks are simply stuck to the concrete supporting walls.

@Cerberus Reminds of skyscrapers.

We don't really have those either.

You would build a home of concrete? How horrible!
If I want that, I’ll move to prison.
Rich.

That started in the 19th century...the supporting structure would often be made of concrete from that time on, but completely covered in more pleasant materials.
But anyway, how come some areas in the world have wooden houses, while others have brick houses?
Others, again, have stone, like in France.
Scandinavia is kind of known for its wooden houses, so it can't be insulation, can it?
Perhaps brick is cheaper in the long run, because it does not deteriorate as fast?
Do you have many wooden houses left from before the 19th century?

3:07 AM
I don’t know.
It.
Is.
Still.
Raining!!!!
Just changed out the towels from the floor, putting them in the spin cycle.
Laid down lots of extras, and hope to sleep without getting up every half hour to change them.
The article above says that it because of the economy.

RegDwighт: Re BB: You have no fear. It's back to form, and then some. Shockingly good, I'd say. Stunning.

3:28 AM
The Coliseum is made with concrete.
A concrete home doesn't need to look like cinder blocks.

2 hours later…
5:42 AM
@Cerberus we have a mix, brick houses were more common in the sixties. Now wood or plaster is the most common for small houses I think. We also had houses made of brick and wood they are not common to build any more.

Had more than two more inches of rain yesterday, but I think we may finally be reaching the other side. 17" of rain here is considered a thousand-year event.

Hi
Good morning
everyone
@tchrist That sounds pretty scary.
What does this mean? i.stack.imgur.com/qBFb6.gif

11:49 AM
Hi.

12:00 PM
It has begun to drizzle again. WTF?
@Noah Dunno. Pacman operator? Laughing?
They pierced the exclusion zone into Nederland late yesterday and managed to get a tanker full of gasoline in.
I don’t know where those people had to go anyway.
They came in the back way from the south, not from the east or north as is normal to get to Nederland. They came up through I-70 at Idaho Springs and then up through the gambling towns of Blackhawk and Central City. Turns out the south route was the fastest of the three to fix, because it had had less rain than up north.

12:27 PM
@Mr.Shiny I haz nu fone!
Still managing @tchrist?

sulks

sends sun your way
It's raining here too.

It’s raining. Again. I see as it dawns that today still looks like every other day for the last week.
Fog/clouds everywhere low, very low vis, much dripping.

The summer before I left the South, it rained 45 days out of 60.
I had mold growing everywhere in my apartment.

Yes.
That’s starting.
Got the basement bedroom ripped out yesterday, plus some of the non-dry wall.
But the crawl space is a terror.
We’ve had more than 17 inches of rain.

12:32 PM
I got a de-humidifier that I had to empty every couple of hours. It held 2L.

In just a few days.

So I feel for you.

There are many years we don’t get that much total, even including snow.
My house has incursion points I never dreamt of.
Or nightmared of.
Meanwhile I see that Japan just ordered 300,000 people to evacuate due to an incoming typhoon there.

It's such a relief that climate change is just a thing that the bleeding hearts made up. If we can convince enough people, this whole problem will go away.

12:53 PM
afternoon

Hullo!

how goes it @Kit?

It goes. I've a headache from the low pressure, methinks.
But I just put on some tunes.
The first one is nice.
Crystallize Lindsey Stirling

good good.

How are you?

12:57 PM
I'm fine :) I took today off, so I'm chilling out at home

@Michael might like it actually. Let me see if there's a YouTube link.

@JohanLarsson now animate it from the front.

@MattЭллен Are you OK? Just needed some headspace?

@KitFox oh just because I was on a Stag do over the weekend. I thought I might need today to recover :D

@KitFox the poor instrument. Why does she hate it so much?

12:59 PM
She hates herself, not the instrument. Aren't you listening?
@MattЭллен Were you right? And was it fun?

@KitFox I don't have sound. But the video looks fucking pretentious. It made be barf a little. Then a lot.

Oh, I didn't watch the video.

Then do not. Please. I fear for you.

I don't think you'd be into it though.
Not the kind of music I associate with my internal representation of you.

@KitFox I probably would be fine if I were at work. It was a good day. We went into a vertical wind tunnel thing to simulate free fall. That was exciting. Then there was some Laser Quest. That was good, but weird since most of the participants were 10 years old. Then we went out and got drunk
The stag was dressed up at the Milkybar Kid :D

1:02 PM
@KitFox That's a funny statement to make, since my music tastes escape classification.

@MattЭллен That sounds awesome.

I was :D

@RegDwighт I wasn't classifying it.

@KitFox How was your weekend?

Uprising Muse
I have no idea what I seeded this station with, but it's been making me happy so far.
@MattЭллен Pretty good ok.
I re-watched Return of the King with my husband.
I think it might have been our first date movie.
I mean, when it came out.

1:04 PM
@KitFox I'm just saying. You'll find me listening to Britney Spears as much as to Bach or Slayer.

I remember my ex- calling to ask me if we'd still go see it together.
@RegDwighт Yeah, I know.
You're cool like that.

@KitFox awww. Sweet! Did you have a good snuggle?
@KitFox awkward!

It was a little heart-breaking. We'd broken up two months prior and were living in different states, but I still liked him.

If I hadn't freaked out and gone off the deep end, I might have gone with him.
Sleepy Hollow sounds ridiculous.

1:10 PM
With Jonny Depp? Yeah, I didn't enjoy it.

Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it back to you
@MattЭллен No, the new series.

I love all Johnny Depp, even the shit.

Ed Wood.

1:11 PM
I want to watch The Rum Diaries and have crazy drunken sex.

@KitFox Oh, yeah, I've seen this many times
Pretty excellent

Good way to start off my morning.

@KitFox Lindsey Stirling, or the crazy drunken sex?

Are we talking about the same video? puzzled

@MichaelDunfield Well, both would be good, but I only did one.
@RegDwighт Not the video, the music.

1:15 PM
Well, he specifically said "seen", not "heard".
I am easily puzzled by words.

Well, naturally. You can barely express yourself in any language.

I would bang Lindsey Stirling

You're right though, I shouldn'ta watched the video.

Why not, it's excellent.

I want to watch The Rum Diaries and have crazy drunken sex.

1:18 PM
I couldn't watch her overly emote on violin in the snow.

@KitFox =/

Sorry. Her wiggling looked too melodramatic.

I have a new standard by which I judge music videos. It is "Wrecking Ball" by Miley Cyrus. In comparison to that video, all other videos are awesome.

Hahaha
I haven't dared to watch it yet.

^
Since we're talking about crazy music videos:

1:22 PM
I have a new phone, @Mr.Shiny!

@KitFox yeah I saw your ping. What did you end up getting?

New phone!
S3

It's purdy. And blue!

Oh, hey, this is the English room. You guys might find this interesting: gamejolt.com/games/puzzle/a-b-city/14954

I really enjoyed it.

@Michael, wow cool game, reminds me of scribblenauts

@RockyDeHart Yeah, I like it a lot.
@KitFox So chill

That's the way I roll.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 have you seen the parody?

@KitFox I've been listening to Revolution 9 Radio for the past week or so.

I'm not familiar with that. Is it good?

Q: Can the verb 'be' be modified?

Barrie EnglandComments on this question , now closed, considered whether the verb be could be modified by an adverb. This seems a question worth pursuing in its own right, so may I ask what completely modifies in the following sentence, if it doesn't modify be? Whatever you choose to be, be completely.

2:36 PM
@KitFox I think I love ya.

Aw, thanks.

Let me rock ya, that's all I wanna do.

Um, OK.

That hurts!
I think I look mean or something.

It's a redirect.

You look like you're about to say something.

2:44 PM
Hi. This is probably to short for a question on the main site. I hope you don't mind that I ask here first. I know what equidistant means. Is there an English word if something is distributed equally in a radial fashion? Like the spikes in this image:

I don't know. I might say they were distributed evenly around the wheel.

I would upvote that on the main site.

I don't know if there's a technical term for it. You might try the Math room.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 No. I couldn't even watch the video. I clicked to a random spot on the youtube seek bar and miley was sticking her enormous tongue out to lick a sledgehammer and I gave up.

@KitFox They'll beat me to death ;-)

2:46 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 heh.

@halirutan They might just.

OK, let me ask this on the main site. Thanks.

Do they radiate evenly?

@MichaelDunfield "sty" isn't a building? oh come on

@Jez I'll suggest it to him. He's still adding words!
He just added like 100 more

Jez
heh

Pretty neat concept though

Jez
but yeah it is quite fun
i dont suppose there's a list of accepted building words?

Not as such, no.
At least not that I know of

Jez
3:13 PM
ooh it has plaza cool

@KitFox It's Pandora's picks from John Lennon's "Revolution 9" off the white album.

@Jez Also 'lot' is probably the best size to cost ratio I've sound so far.
Also there's some 1x1 tiles too, like bench, mailbox, phonebooth, tardis.
Stuff like statue, monument, tower, clocktower, are all 2x1
trailer, station, subway, 1x2

Jez

what else has Y in it

Also he added multi-word buildings in, like policestation
firestation

3:31 PM
@JohanLarsson I mean, some how it should contain that the angles are equally distributed.
But I asked in the math chatroom and got no answer. I'll ask a real question here on the main site.

Equiangular?

@MichaelDunfield Yes! This seems to be exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks.

@halirutan Sure thing. :)

@Jez Yurt!

Jez
hadn't heard of that

@halirutan I should know it, unfortunately I don't have the standard for dimensioning of drawings available here at home. I would say with X° delning in Swedish

@JohanLarsson Michael suggested equiangular, which I like very much. I think I go with that.
