Vacation!
See y'all in a week. I'm off to the beach!

@aediaλ Have fun!

Have fun!

12:27 AM
@Kit, you've changed!

Yeah, she now reminds me of that Russian squirrel.

lol

sorry for flooding the front page with edits. I went on a streak with "thanks"

I thought drm killed them all?

12:29 AM
Apparently not.
Figure there's a lull now anyway
lots of new people are replying

Evening all

Q: Oh, Say Can You See?

BrandiIn the Star Spangled Banner, the opening line/question is "Oh, say can you see..." Is that grammatically correct? Why isn't it "Oh, say you can see...?"

I don't even... what?

If I type fast enough I'll bury it

@simchona Rather than editing obviously off-topic stuff that has been closed for ages, flag it for deletion.

@RegDwightѬſ道 How do I flag for deletion?

12:42 AM
Flag -> other or some such?

OK. So do you want all closed questions flagged?

Oh my, look at all those shiny Yearling badges!
@simchona I take it that's a rhetorical question.
No, I don't want to see a thousand flags.

Nope.

@simchona Flag -> This needs moderator attention -> Other
Then type in a reason

OK I'll flag the "help Mah English" questions

12:43 AM
Edit stuff you think is salvageable. Don't edit stuff that is obvious rubbish.
Cause right now I'm going through the front page and deleting stuff in bunches, turning those edits of yours into wasted effort.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Ok, I'm flagging.

I went and answered it. I know what the OP needs. But, wow, GEdgar's answer is a doozy.

I've started flagging. Hopefully you agree.

@simchona — You've started running out of energy?

@Robusto All those edits, ya know

12:49 AM
Whoa, looks like 3I weighed in now.

Q: Shouldn't have vs. Shouldn't of

DanielGot into an argument with someone I know about this. I think "shouldn't of" is incorrect and comes from people typing the phrase the way they're used to pronouncing it. He believes both are correct. Thoughts guys?

Gawd.
I'm going back to XBox and beer.

@Robusto Woo!

1:09 AM
@simchona That's not gen ref. It's just not. I have no interest in it whatsoever though.
"This question is too basic; it can be definitively and permanently answered by a single link to a standard internet reference source designed specifically to find that type of information."

A modal verb (also modal, modal auxiliary verb, modal auxiliary) is a type of auxiliary verb that is used to indicate modality -- that is, likelihood, ability, permission, and obligation. The use of auxiliary verbs to express modality is particularly characteristic of Germanic languages. Function Modal auxiliary verbs give more information about the function of the main verb that follows it. Although having a great variety of communicative functions, these functions can all be related to a scale ranging from possibility ("may") to necessity ("must"). Within this scale there are two functio...
> Modal auxiliary verbs give more information about the function of the main verb that follows it.
That being said, I was torn between gen ref and OT.
OT would have cost him 2 points.

I used up my flags.

I think it is really just a bad question. There is an on-topic question in there about usage (is it simply a transcription mistake or do some people actually say 'of' etc.) But he has put in zero research effort. Of course there are too few people who would downvote it and if they did some prat would come along and vote it back up again. :)

I was flagging for Reg to delete things

1:32 AM
Weird--@Reg, my flag weight just dropped. I think it was over 600. Or maybe I'm wrong.

You forgot to eat today?

@simchona no idea about your flag weight, but of course we have like twenty mods or something, and not everybody has to agree with everything. More to the point, the flag weight is just yet another number anyway. Its only purpose is to sort flags in the mod queue which mere mortals don't even see. As long as you don't just flag stuff randomly, you shouldn't be worried about local minima. (And people who do flag randomly will get a nice audience with a mod.)

@RegDwightѬſ道 I did pretty well today. I think you mostly agreed.
Though this is still up

Q: Are there any indications that English is going to split into different languages in the next hundred years?

user9325Are there any indications that (global) English is going to split into different languages in the next hundred years?

I'd say, given the answer on that question, I'd leave it for historical reference. Not constructive is basically a close reason that means "we can save it if we like the answers"

And this?

Q: Educational word games?

mickeyfFictionary, adequately described here, is a favorite with both the school age kids and the “grown ups” in our extended family. We often use Mrs. Byrnes Dictionary. Anwar ChandraSometimes, I find it easier to learn so many English vocabulary and expressions and usage by watching movies. These were all closed already

@simchona Because now it links to that canonical question by Robusto.

Close doesn't necessarily mean delete- exact duplicate and not constructive questions can be saved; the other four get a few days (usually) to be cleaned up, or will then be destroyed

1:45 AM
Ok.

@simchona That one is closed as off-topic, locked, and annotated as "historical significance, but it is not considered a good, on-topic question for this site".

@waiwai933 I've been on a cleanup kick
@RegDwightѬſ道 Sorry, just saw that bit

@simchona I know- I was a bit startled when I saw how many flags Reg had handled today

We should just be careful about not deleting actual value. So some questions are easier to judge than others.
Off-topic, no answers, 0 votes, and closed for six months is a no-brainer.
The AE to BE translation question is not.

@waiwai933 I was editing. Then he told me to just flag.
@RegDwightѬſ道 And that's why you're a mod, and I'm not

1:48 AM
@simchona I know, it's fine, it just threw me for a sec. That's several times as many flags as we usually get in a day.

@waiwai933 I'll probably go on another kick next week. But I'll let one of you know--so you know why all these "please del" flags go up

I love the last paragraph on this question. Take a quick look before I delete it:

BTW, @waiwai, is there a way to edit the site message (short of deleting it and putting up the edited version)? We've already had people joking about how 8/6 was ambiguous.

Q: Whats the difference between the various Englishes?

Justin808I've read and heard thing such as "British English", "American English", "Australian English", etc. I know there is a difference in ascents and word choices but is there a larger difference that makes the nationally named Englishes any different than the regionally named Englishes? For example, I...

This is a list of dialects of the English language. Dialects are linguistic varieties which differ in pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar from each other and from Standard English (which is itself a dialect). Dialects can be usefully defined as "sub-forms of languages which are, in general, mutually comprehensible". British linguists distinguish dialect from accent, which refers only to pronunciation. Thus, any educated English speaker can use the vocabulary and grammar of Standard English, but different speakers use their own local words for everyday objects or actions, regional accen...

Hi @Kit!

@simchona big kiss Hi!

I'm sorry, I should have asked first.
I have a terrible tendency to be presumptuous with my lips.

It's perfectly okay
Well I must be off for now

2:30 AM
So you were making crazy edits?
Oh, see you later then!
I'll be sure to post more pictures while you are gone.
:P

3:01 AM
@Kit Your gravatar is super adorable

Should I get the Sky Watcher?

@FallenAngelEyes Thanks. I figure I'll change out of it tomorrow, but today is a party day!

Hehe
I thought, "What is that? click Awww!"

@FallenAngelEyes I have that effect on people. ;-)

3:12 AM
@KitΘδς Second that.

Ack... WTF is up with all the weird characters...

@MrHen I'm too tired to quote it.
EL&U birthday, something about Alain, we're chaotic, and other random reasons.
Essentially, everyone in chat got drunk and decided to get tattoos.
We can't really seem to agree on how it happened.

Oh. Well, gee, I leave you guys alone for a few days and you all start trying to add extra characters to the English language.

Hi!
I have done no such thing.

I don't think we were thinking it was English. We wanted a gang sign.
@Cerberus is not a Jet, apparently.
How have you been, @MrHen?

3:23 AM
A Jet? As in Westside Story?

@Cerberus Yes. Goes with the "gang sign."

I would show you my tattoos...

Are they gang tats?

I had "ELU" tattooed all over me just before the crisis broke out. Ah, well, such is life.

Tease.

3:25 AM
Thanks.
Now I must to bed.

@KitΘδς Good, good. Now no longer in Texas.

@MrHen Ah, excellent.
@Cerberus Good night, pooch.

@MrHen Good luck with the gang signs!

@Cerberus Good night! And how was the party? Is the tattoo for real? West Side Story is a nice musical.

user19161
@fallen Are you still up? >_>

@JasperLoy Yessir

@JasperLoy It was only a dinner party, with old friends. I missed the gay parade opening party, which is one of the biggest street parties of the year here for gays and straights alike (my brother and his flat mates did go). Of course I don't have a tattoo! But I am in the process of getting ready for bed.

user19161
@MrHen There is now a meta question on this. Funny enough, it has close votes in the not constructive category!

@Cerberus OK go to sleep then. Talk to you later. Unfortunately gays are not so well-received here.

@RegDwight: FYI, I don't know if you still get pings in from our room. So... ping. :)

@JasperLoy Yeah you explained that. Things will slowly change. Good morning, or whatever you're going to do! Bye.

user19161
@MrHen I think you meant pings from in our room. Well, if he is on the main site, it will appear in his SE inbox, but not on the EL inbox as I discovered, though I'm not sure if it produces any sound.

@JasperLoy Reg and I have a private discussion going in a separate room but the pings don't always seem to make it into the inbox.

@z7sg I am trying to edit the title of the question asking for fractions of 1? Do you think that is what the question is asking, instead of 10000?

@JasperLoy Hell I don't know if the OP's right intention was expressed in the title or the body. I can't make sense of either. :)

user19161
@z7sgѪ I think he means 1 if you read the original body, so I will cahnge it to 1 though kiam changed it to 10000. He probably misread.

I think he wants to know what you call the numbers between 0 and 1. But I'm not going to formulate his question for him... good luck with that. ;)

5:10 PM
@waiwai You are no longer the youngest here. I think genesis is. :)

user19161
Hello @rum.

Good evening @JasperLoy
I see you have changed your Gravatar yet again
What is it this time?
Ouch.
Just saw it in big. Please don't explain it, I don't want to know how it got there.

user19161
@rumtscho There's nothing to explain. Just a fan that's all. :)

@waiwai933 Why did you edit the 10,000 back to 10.000?

user19161
@z7sgѪ It's back to 1 now anyway. Difference in writing numbers.

5:20 PM
No, I mean in the body.
10.000 = 10 I'm sure that's not what was meant.

user19161
@z7sgѪ Some countries use . for , and , for . when writing numbers.

@JasperLoy In this room, I probably won't even get looked surly at for saying на вкус и на цвет товарищи нет

@JasperLoy English speaking ones don't.
@rumtscho Do you know what this means: Все сердце в решето

user19161
@z7sgѪ Now the two of you are confusing me since these are not direct translatables!

user19161
5:25 PM
@z7sgѪ Even that has multiple meanings! I think too much: when it means one thing to another it means three to me.

OK, I'm back. I like your new fashion.
Oh, no. Wrong parent user.

user19161
@rumtscho Fashion? Now you are confusing me again!

Either he/she likes Justin Bieber or our funny characters. I hope it's the latter.

@JasperLoy now it worked
I meant the rewrite-your-nick fashion

@румчо Yes, but now you will be unpingable.
If you still have time, you might want to put three English letters at the beginning.
Otherwise, you'll be locked that way for thirty days.

5:31 PM
Yes, just put PYM or something, it will look the same

@KitΘδς I had to learn to use the mouse for replying to messages in this chat.
I am assuming that everybody else does the same. And I got the ping from your last reply.

user19161
What is the announcement on the shortage all about? Aren't there always shortages now and then?

Besides, I only changed the name shown for my EL&U account. I think that if I enter the EL&U chat with my cooking account, the way I always have, I will be called rumtscho again.

user19161
@kit I see you changed back to the old fox again, and I rolled mine back too to a previous revision.

@JasperLoy Only in Communism.

user19161
5:34 PM
@румчо I just saw it when I refreshed my browser.

@румчо That's only because I was replying.
@румчо I think you are right.

user19161
Due to my lack of understanding of Russian culture, most of the messages in the past five minutes are incomprehensible!

@JasperLoy I only changed it yesterday because of EL&U's birthday.

@JasperLoy the first time I said it, it hadn't been changed, because I had changed my name in the EL&U site.

user19161
@румчо Now you have to stick to it for 30 days!

5:36 PM
All right then. To everybody here, congratulations on EL&U's birthday.

user19161
You should congratulate Jeff instead!

@JasperLoy I only changed one of my accounts in the whole StackExchange network. I can always log in on chat with another one.

user19161
I like to edit question titles and bodies, JSBangs likes to retag, each almost exclusively. We play complementary roles.

I guess that people reading my questions on EL&U will be stuck with reading the cyrillic nick, but it isn't the strangest one around here. And then, I don't even have that many questions here.

user19161
Right, if you didn't come to chat, I would not have thought of rumtscho.

5:40 PM
@румчо We need to get more people accustomed to Cyrillic.

@JasperLoy I didn't change the gravatar.

user19161
@румчо Just stick with whatever you like, you can change it everyday, unlike the username.

@z7sgѪ As the first step to converting them back to Old Cyrillic? (I like your big jus)
@JasperLoy But I hoped that people will notice that I am the same person if I change the nick but not the gravatar. Maybe I'm just not often enough around here for that to happen.

@румчо Well, there are also plenty of Russian speakers who would recognize your name, I'm sure.

@румчо Yeah that's phase two! First I think it would be good to bring back Russian as a world language. I feel that it's resting on its laurels a bit.

user19161
5:44 PM
@z7sgѪ Considering how smart Russians are, the country should be more prosperous.

@z7sgѪ I think Russian never used the Glagolic alphabet.

user19161
I noticed there were several times when my answer got downvoted and the other answers got upvoted very quickly. Maybe I have made an enemy somewhere...

user19161
Hello @caleb!

@JasperLoy It's not so much that as, well... they had Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Pushkin, Gogol, Bulgakov... the list goes on.
@румчо I recognise some of the letters from ikoni
I'm not sure if I've seen the big yus or not though...

user19161
@z7sgѪ I was thinking about the mathematicians Kolmogorov, Fomin, Perelman, Shilov. Of course they are not politicians!

5:49 PM
@z7sgѪ It's old cyrillic, not glagolic. But it was never used in Russian, only in Bulgarian.
I mean the big yus.

Ah, well, anyway I just like how it looks. That's good cos I'm stuck with it now

user19161
And also Dubrovin, Novikov etc.

@z7sgѪ It makes me nostalgic. We had some old books which used yus and yat. They were books about the modern way of managing a farm at the beginning of the 20th century, because that's what interested my great-granddad, but I used to read them despite the odd topic (mostly because I had read everything else at home thrice and was bored out of my mind).

user19161
Hello@JSB!

hello
just stopping in to see what people are talking about
@румчо the only language that ever used glagolitic was Old Church Slavonic

user19161
5:59 PM
@JSBᾶngs Nothing and everything as usual.

Hey @JSB does your baby sense when you have fallen asleep, and choose that exact moment to wake up and start crying?

@JSBᾶngs It was my mistake. Big yus isn't glagolic, it's obsolete cyrillic

@KitΘδς no, but he senses the exact moment when i have left the room, cunningly pretending to sleep until that time

Plus, Glagolic was used in everyday Bulgarian before Cyrillic was created.

@румчо right, but cyrillic was created pretty early. i don't know if there are any non-church documents in glagolitic, b/c by the time the writing system was used for those purposes they had already switched to cyrillic
but i could be wrong

6:04 PM
@JSBᾶngs There probably were legal documents and other similar stuff which got written in glagolic. After all, accepting the new alphabet was a political decision of Boris I. He probably tried to get it widespread as soon as possible.

@румчо this is true.

How did this happen?
I came here to lurk a bit, get some normalcy

user19161
I just realised that when we edit a question we should look at the original version. After a few edits by different users, the meaning might change quite a bit.

and now I am in the middle of the only discussion, and it concerns the differences between Cyrillic and Glagolic alphabet.

user19161
And some questions I don't even know what is being asked.

user19161
6:17 PM
@румчо Good, you can create the Rumtscho alphabet then!

@JasperLoy I you'd ever seen something I have written by hand, you'd know I have already done it.
Or rather, I have created lots of single-use alphabets.

user19161
My handwriting used to be very bad. But then I tried to be a good boy in my schoolwork and started writing nicely. Now it is a bit too nice. Almost not cursive at all.

Not cursive?
Screenshot!

user19161
@Cerberus Too lazy to do that, and also no scanner or digicam, and writing on screen is different from writing on paper. But it's like a child writing each letter carefully, plus the speed and a bit of irregularity. But it is not any slower than cursive, and actually saves ink!

user19161
Essentially the ink is omitted where the adjacent letter are supposed to be joined, so it's a neat trick.

6:27 PM
Ah, OK.
I write in sloppy cursive, I do join all letters.

Q: Term for measuring in fractions of 1

PepijnWhen you measure in fractions of 100, you call it percentage. When you measure in fractions of 1000, you call it promille or per mil. There are even words for fractions of 10000 or 100000. But what do you call it when you measure in fractions of 1?

user19161
It is not clear what OP wants. I am not sure if the title I edited is representative of it.
